  • How to disable “smart quotes” in Windows Live Mail?

    - by Indrek
Windows Live Mail by default changes straight quotation marks (" and ') to typographic quotation marks, aka "smart quotes" (“, ”, ‘ and ’). This often results in the recipient of the email seeing blank rectangles or other symbols instead of the smart quotes, due to encoding problems. Unlike in most programs, there's doesn't seem to be any built-in option to disable this, and searching online for solutions only leads to workarounds, like hitting Backspace immediately after typing a single or double quote, and switching to "Plain text" mode. Is there any way to disable this behaviour?

  • Server unresponsive after successful OpenSSL connection

    - by Dan B
I'm testing server connections using OpenSSL, with varying results Server A: connection is successful, as are user login and the other commands I expected to work Server B: connection is successful, but the server is unresponsive when I try to submit a command. I don't get an error, or even a disconnection – just a blank line from where I hit Enter or ^M My hunch is that Server B's configuration requires a different character encoding or something and it's simply not recognizing my Enter keystroke, but I've looked to no avail... any suggestions would be appreciated!

  • http compression shared hosting apache/php

    - by gansodesoya
Hi, I was sniffing the response header of one my sites and apparently is not using http compression to deliver responses because I'm not seeing the Content-Encoding: gzip in the response header. But the weird thing is that phpinfo() shows me HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING: gzip, deflate, sdch Im using a rackspace cloud site (shared hosting, cant access httpdconfig), and I really want to activate http compression but the support guys over there tells me that if the phpinfo() says it, its already on. thanks.!

  • How to play multiple videos side-by-side synchronized?

    - by NoCanDo
I've got 3 videos, all 3 have the same time, same amount of frames, and they only differ in terms of encoding quality. Now I need them to run side-by-side in synchronized fashion for evaluation purposes. Meaning when I press "play" BOTH! videos should start. Analogically for stop, forward, backward. Anyone know any player capable of doing that? Platform: Win7

  • Secret, unlogged, transparent, case-sensitive proxy in IIS6?

    - by Ian Boyd
Does IIS have a secret, unlogged, transparent, case-sensitive proxy built into it? A file exists on the web-server: GET http://www.stackoverflow.com/javascript/ModifyQuoteArea.js HTTP/1.1 Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml, */* Accept-Language: en-US User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0) Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: Keep-Alive Host: www.stackoverflow.com HTTP/1.1 200 OK Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Length: 29246 Date: Mon, 07 Mar 2011 14:20:07 GMT Content-Type: application/x-javascript ETag: "5a0a6178edacb1:1c51" Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 Last-Modified: Fri, 02 Tue 2010 17:03:32 GMT Accept-Ranges: bytes X-Powered-By: ASP.NET ... Problem is that a changes made to the file will not get served, the old (i.e. February of last year) version keeps getting served: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Length: 29246 Date: Mon, 07 Mar 2011 14:23:07 GMT Content-Type: application/x-javascript ETag: "5a0a6178edacb1:1c51" Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 Last-Modified: Fri, 02 Tue 2010 17:03:32 GMT Accept-Ranges: bytes X-Powered-By: ASP.NET ... The same old file gets served, even though we've: renamed the file deleted the file restarted IIS The request for this file does not appear in the IIS logs (e.g. C:\WINNT\System32\LogFiles\W3SVC7\) And this only happens from the outside (i.e. the internet). If you issue the request locally on the server, then you will: - get the current file (file there) - 404 (file renamed) - 404 (file deleted) But if i change the case of the requested resource, i.e.: GET http://www.stackoverflow.com/javascript/MoDiFyQuOtEArEa.js HTTP/1.1 Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml, */* Accept-Language: en-US User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0) Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: Keep-Alive Host: www.stackoverflow.com Note: MoDiFyQuOtEArEa.js verses ModifyQuoteArea.js Then i do get the proper file (or get the 404 as i expect if the file is renamed or deleted). But any subsequent changes to the file will not show up until i change the case of the file i'm asking for. Checking the IIS logs all indicate that the (internet) requests are all coming the correct client on the internet (i.e. not from some intermediate proxy). Since the file doesn't exist on the hard drive anymore, i conclude that there is a proxy. The requests serviced from this proxy are not logged in the IIS logs. The requests for new files are logged, and from the client IP, not a proxy IP. The proxy is case sensitivie. This does not sound like something Microsoft, or IIS, would do: - a transparent proxy - case-sensitivie - unlogged - surviving restarts of IIS - surviving in a cache for hours i can't believe that our customer's IIS is doing these things. i'm assuming there is some other transparent proxy in front of IIS. Or, does IIS have a transparent, unlogged, case-sensitive, memory based, proxy, that caches content for at least 7 hours? (Come Monday morning, IIS is serving the correct file, unlogged).

  • nginx probably deliering wrong filetype for .css file with php tags

    - by Katai
And again - NGINX is giving me many Questions today :) Like always, I already tried around for a while, but cant seem to fix this issue: I just configured NGINX to handle my .css files equal to my .php files (to parse PHP tags inside the CSS file). This works perfectly, and the file is found and delivered. I could debug it with FIrebug, and everything is OK (it displays the contents of the .css inside the opened <link> tag). So, everything working, right? Wrong. It has the CSS, but it does not interpret it! What I mean by this: apparently, the file-type of the CSS (or aplication-type, whatever) is wrong. The Page can access the CSS, but doesnt bother at all to actually use it. What I checked / tried: There are no PHP errors inside of the .css, so that one is out The .css is accessible. I can call the URI manually, or check if the included URL finds it: both works The .css has no syntax errors (i switched to a css that just has body {background-color: #000; } It works whitout NGINX I deleted the browser cache / restarted NGINX after config rewrites Here the configuration: server { listen 80; server_name localhost; access_log /var/log/nginx/board.access_log; error_log /var/log/nginx/board.error_log warn; root /var/www/board/public; index index.php; fastcgi_index index.php; location / { try_files $uri $uri /index.php; } location ~ (\.php|\.css)$ { try_files $uri =404; include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; #keepalive_timeout 0; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:7777; } } Firebug 'Network' Response Header: Connection keep-alive Content-Encoding gzip Content-Type text/html Date Sat, 16 Jun 2012 10:08:40 GMT Server nginx/1.0.5 Transfer-Encoding chunked X-Powered-By PHP/5.3.6-13ubuntu3.7 I think I just answered my own question. Is the Content-Type text/html the problem? How can I remove that? My personal guess is that I have to use this in some way include /etc/nginx/mime.types; default_type application/octet-stream; But I'm not sure... anyone an idea how to solve this? TLDR; CSS file is delivered correctly, but it doesnt seem to be 'used' as CSS from the browser. (Tested, works on apache)

  • Getting gvim to show unicode

    - by Rook
How to get GVim (v. 7.3. on Windows XP, if that matters) to show Unicode characters? Something along the lines of http://vimcasts.org/episodes/show-invisibles/ (search for listchars to see the little triangle I'm trying to get). I'm using set encoding, set fileencoding, and set fileencodings, all to utf-8, if that helps. I know it must be something simple, but nevertheless, here I am, stuck. Help.

I have the slight feeling it has something to do with virtual users, but i could also be wrong! Thanks in advance

  • Recover not properly burned DVD from camcoder

Can anybody suggest me any good and preferably free software - working on Vista / 7 - for recovering content from DVD disks? A few DVD-R VOB files cannot be read from disk by Windows. Probably the camera failed to burn it correctly. What I want to achieve is to skip a few invalid frames in VOB files and recreate proper MPEG stream - without re-encoding whole stream and loosing the quality.

  • nginx to lighttpd detecting request headers

    - by A.Jesin
I'm moving a site form Nginx to Lighttpd. I was able to move everything except these nginx rules set $enc_type ""; if ($http_accept_encoding ~ gzip) { set $enc_type .gzip; } if (-f $request_filename$enc_type) { rewrite (.*) $1$enc_type break; } I think I can create the variable like this var.enc_type = "" in lighttpd but how do I check if the request header Accept-Encoding contains gzip

  • Special characters in Samba filenames

    - by Matti
When serving files containing special characters such as "()?:" in the filename through Samba, the names get transformed into an unrecognizable format. For example, a file my_file:_(important).txt is displayed as M43J1E~0.TXT Is there a way to avoid this behavior (without renaming the files, obviously)? I'm assuming that character encoding is not to blame because several UTF-8 characters seem to work fine.

  • Creating a consumer of a Web Service WSDL/SOAP

    - by Azzi
I am attempting to write a Windows Desktop App (using WCF) that is a consumer of a web service. The application: Sends a SOAP message to a British Government Server to get an authentication token based on the arugments passed Retrieves a response from that server in the form of a string which contains the authentication token. I have a template of the SOAP message from the British Government, and a WSDL file for the service. What I have tried Add a service reference using the WSDL file. I received the following error: URI formats are not supported. Add a Web Reference using the URL of the service. I received the following error: The request failed with HTTP status 405: Method Not Allowed. Send the SOAP request using a POST. The Call to GetResponse() threw a 500 External Server Error. • Series of abstract classes and NHibernate

    - by Chris Cowdery-Corvan
    Hello, and first off thanks for your time to look at this. For a research project I'm working on, I have a somewhat complex design (which I've been given) to persist to a database via NHibernate. Here's an example of the class hierarchy: TransitStrategy, TransportationCompany and TransportationLocation are all abstract classes. The XML configuration I have is presently: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="Vacationizer" namespace="Vacationizer.Domain.Transit"> <class name="TransitStrategy"> <id name="TransitStrategyId"> <generator class="guid" /> </id> <property name="Restrictions" /> <joined-subclass name="Flight" table="Flight_TransitStrategy"> <key column="TransitStrategyId" /> <property name="DepartingAirport" /> <property name="ArrivingAirport" /> <property name="Airline" /> <property name="FlightNumber" /> <property name="FlightArrivalTime" /> <property name="FlightDepartureTime" /> </joined-subclass> <joined-subclass name="RentalCar" table="RentalCar_TransitStrategy"> <key column="TransitStrategyId" /> <property name="RentalCarBranch" /> <property name="CarMake" /> <property name="CarModel" /> <property name="CarYear" /> <property name="CarColor" /> <property name="RentalBegins" /> <property name="RentalEnds" /> </joined-subclass> </class> <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="Vacationizer" namespace="Vacationizer.Domain.Transit"> <class name="TransportationCompany"> <id name="TransportationCompanyId"> <generator class="guid" /> </id> <property name="Name" /> <property name="Reviews" /> <property name="Website" /> <property name="Photo" /> <joined-subclass name="Airline" table="Airline_TransportationCompany"> <key column="TransportationLocationId" /> </joined-subclass> <joined-subclass name="RentalCarAgency" table="RentalCarAgency_TransportationCompany"> <key column="TransportationLocationId" /> </joined-subclass> </class> <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="Vacationizer" namespace="Vacationizer.Domain.Transit"> <class name="TransportationLocation"> <id name="TransportationLocationId"> <generator class="guid" /> </id> <property name="Name" /> <property name="Image" /> <property name="Geolocation" /> <property name="Reviews" /> <!-- <property name="HoursOpen" />--> <property name="PhoneNumber" /> <property name="FaxNumber" /> <joined-subclass name="Airport" table="Airport_TransportationLocation"> <key column="TransportationLocationId" /> <property name="AirportCode" /> <property name="Website" /> </joined-subclass> <joined-subclass name="RentalCarBranch" table="RentalCarBranch_TransportationLocation"> <key column="TransitStrategyId" /> <property name="Agency" />
