• C# Convert string to nullable type (int, double, etc...)

- by Nathan Koop
I am attempting to do some data conversion. Unfortunately, much of the data is in strings, where it should be int's or double, etc... So what I've got is something like: double? amount = Convert.ToDouble(strAmount); The problem with this approach is if strAmount is empty, if it's empty I want it to amount to be null, so when I add it into the database the column will be null. So I ended up writing this: double? amount = null; if(strAmount.Trim().Length>0) { amount = Convert.ToDouble(strAmount); } Now this works fine, but I now have five lines of code instead of one. This makes things a little more difficult to read, especially when I have a large amount of columns to convert. I thought I'd use an extension to the string class and generic's to pass in the type, this is because it could be a double, or an int, or a long. So I tried this: public static class GenericExtension { public static Nullable<T> ConvertToNullable<T>(this string s, T type) where T: struct { if (s.Trim().Length > 0) { return (Nullable<T>)s; } return null; } } But I get the error: Cannot convert type 'string' to 'T?' Is there a way around this? I am not very familiar with creating methods using generics.

• F# constructor syntax - overiding and augmenting new

- by Benjol
I have a non-disposable class with Open/Close syntax that I'd like to be able to use, so I'm trying to inherit from it, and work the Open into the new and the Close into Dispose. The second part is ok, but I can't work out how to do the Open: type DisposableOpenCloseClass(openargs) = inherit OpenCloseClass() //do this.Open(openargs) <-- compiler no like interface IDisposable with member this.Dispose() = this.Close() (cf. this question which I asked a long time ago, but I can't join the dots to this one)

• MS Exam 70-536 - How to throw and handle exception from thread?

- by Max Gontar
Hello! In MS Exam 70-536 .Net Foundation, Chapter 7 "Threading" in Lesson 1 Creating Threads there is a text: Be aware that because the WorkWithParameter method takes an object, Thread.Start could be called with any object instead of the string it expects. Being careful in choosing your starting method for a thread to deal with unknown types is crucial to good threading code. Instead of blindly casting the method parameter into our string, it is a better practice to test the type of the object, as shown in the following example: ' VB Dim info As String = o as String If info Is Nothing Then Throw InvalidProgramException("Parameter for thread must be a string") End If // C# string info = o as string; if (info == null) { throw InvalidProgramException("Parameter for thread must be a string"); } So, I've tried this but exception is not handled properly (no console exception entry, program is terminated), what is wrong with my code (below)? class Program { static void Main(string[] args) { Thread thread = new Thread(SomeWork); try { thread.Start(null); thread.Join(); } catch (InvalidProgramException ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.Message); } finally { Console.ReadKey(); } } private static void SomeWork(Object o) { String value = (String)o; if (value == null) { throw new InvalidProgramException("Parameter for "+ "thread must be a string"); } } } Thanks for your time!

- by Khajavi

I know how to edit the packet in packet_interceptor function, but how can I drop incoming packets in this function?? #include <linux/netdevice.h> #include <linux/skbuff.h> #include <linux/ip.h> #include <net/sock.h> struct packet_type my_proto; int packet_interceptor(struct sk_buff *skb, struct net_device *dev, struct packet_type *pt, struct net_device *orig_dev) { // I dont want certain packets go to upper in net_devices for further processing. // How can I drop sk_buff here?! return 0; } static int hello_init( void ) { printk(KERN_INFO "Hello, world!\n"); my_proto.type = htons(ETH_P_ALL); my_proto.dev = NULL; my_proto.func = packet_interceptor; dev_add_pack(&my_proto); return 0; } static void hello_exit(void) { dev_remove_pack(&my_proto); printk(KERN_INFO "Bye, world\n"); } module_init(hello_init); module_exit(hello_exit);

• C++ ambiguous template instantiation

- by aaa
the following gives me ambiguous template instantiation with nvcc (combination of EDG front-end and g++). Is it really ambiguous, or is compiler wrong? I also post workaround à la boost::enable_if template<typename T> struct disable_if_serial { typedef void type; }; template<> struct disable_if_serial<serial_tag> { }; template<int M, int N, typename T> __device__ //static typename disable_if_serial<T>::type void add_evaluate_polynomial1(double *R, const double (&C)[M][N], double x, const T &thread) { // ... } template<size_t M, size_t N> __device__ static void add_evaluate_polynomial1(double *R, const double (&C)[M][N], double x, const serial_tag&) { for (size_t i = 0; i < M; ++i) add_evaluate_polynomial1(R, C, x, i); } // ambiguous template instantiation here. add_evaluate_polynomial1(R, C, x, serial_tag());

• How can show data from another form

- by Michael Quiles
This is basically a tic tac toe game, and I have another form called Winner.cs when a player wins I want it to call the form (this part works) and then I want it to say xWinner.label =b1.text"" + has won the game!. the part I cant get to work is displaying the text in the winners form label. There's an example of a message box that commented out for reference instead of b1.text using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace MyGame { public class Result1 { static private int[,] Winners = new int[,] { {0,1,2}, {3,4,5}, {6,7,8}, {0,3,6}, {1,4,7}, {2,5,8}, {0,4,8}, {2,4,6}, }; static public bool CheckWinner(Button[] myControls) { bool gameOver = false; for (int i = 0; i < 8; i++) { int a = Winners[i, 0], b = Winners[i, 1], c = Winners[i, 2]; Button b1 = myControls[a], b2 = myControls[b], b3 = myControls[c]; if (b1.Text == "" || b2.Text == "" || b3.Text == "") continue; if (b1.Text == b2.Text && b2.Text == b3.Text) { b1.BackColor = b2.BackColor = b3.BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.LightCoral; b1.Font = b2.Font = b3.Font = new System.Drawing.Font("Microsoft Sans Serif", 32F, System.Drawing.FontStyle.Italic & System.Drawing.FontStyle.Bold, System.Drawing.GraphicsUnit.Point, ((System.Byte)(0))); gameOver = true; Form xWinnerForm = new xWinnerForm(); xWinnerForm.Show(); //MessageBox.Show(b1.Text + " .... Wins the game!", "Game End", MessageBoxButtons.OK); //break; } } return gameOver; } } }

• Is it OK to try to use Plinq in all Linq queries?

- by Tony_Henrich
I read that PLinq will automatically use non parallel Linq if it finds PLinq to be more expensive. So I figured then why not use PLinq for everything (when possible) and let the runtime decide which one to use. The apps will be deployed to multicore servers and I am OK to develop a little more code to deal with parallelism. What are the pitfalls of using plinq as a default?

• Check in Javascript if a SSL Certificate is valid

- by MB
Hi. Is there a way to check in Javascript if given a host it's SSL certificate is valid? (non blocking) In my case I want to display: "you can also use https://.." if via javascript I can make a request to https://my_url without being asked to accept an untrusted certificate. Can this be done asynchonously? -- M.

• Removing HTML from a Java String

- by Mason
Is there a good way to remove HTML from a Java string? A simple regex like replaceAll("\\<.*?>","") will work, but things like & wont be converted correctly and non-HTML between the two angle brackets will be removed (ie the .*? in the regex will disappear).

• how to convince website users to use openid

- by isolatedIterator
Perhaps this isn't the best forum for this question. If so, would one of the other child sites be more suitable? I am wondering how to overcome the learning curve of convincing a non-technical bunch of users how and what open id is. how do you convince users that it is a good thing and that they want to use it?

• Semantics of repeated acknowledgments in JMS

- by Lajos Nagy
Suppose I decide to call acknowledgment() on a JMS message several times. Say the first call fails (for non-permanent reason). Does the success of the second (or any subsequent) call guarantee that the message is now acknowledged? Is the exact behavior of acknowledgement() specified anywhere?

• When should I use SATA 6gb/s?

- by Gili
I purchased a Baraccuda hard-drive (model ST3000DM001) that supports a maximum read transfer rate of 210 MB/s and SATA 1.5/3/6 Gb/s. My motherboard has a limited number of 6 Gb/s ports so I'd like to reserve them for when it's really necessary. When does a hard-drive benefit from a SATA 6 Gb/s port? Doesn't it require a transfer speed of at least 375 MB/s to surpass the limit of SATA 3 Gb/s? Are there any other benefits of SATA 6 Gb/s vs 3 Gb/s ports?

• How do I upload a file, process it and return a result file in a single request to a REST WCF service?

- by sharptooth
I need to implement the following scenario in a REST service implemented in WCF: the user submits a binary file and a set of parameters the server consumes the file, does some clever work and generates a binary output file the user retrieves that binary result file and all that is done in a single operation from the client perspective. It's pretty easy in a non-REST service. How do I do that in a REST service? Where do I get started?

• Drupal 6 CCK - Having a textbox appear when 'Other' is selected

- by espais
I have a special content-type that I have created, and one of the fields is a radio button list. The last element is named 'Other' and I would like to have a textbox appear and allow the user to enter in a non-defined value. Is this sort of capability provided by any sort of module, or is this something that needs to be coded by hand? (If so, would you mind pointing me in the correct direction?)

• Remap Copy and Paste shortcuts on a Mac

- by Linzdp
I use Windows at work and a Mac at home. One of the biggest issues is the difference between the copy paste shortcuts on Windows vs the Mac i.e. Ctrl + C & Ctrl + V on Windows and on the Mac its Command + C and Command + V. Invariably its hard because of learnt motor skills where my hand always shapes itself to the Windows Ctrl + C configuration(I have been using Windows longer) I would like to remap the Copy and Paste to the Fn + C and Fn + V on the Mac. Why? Because the Fn key is actually the key that corresponds to where the Ctrl key is on Windows keyboards and since its the last edge key its easy to find. I have tried Double Command but it doesn't seem to have an option of turning Fn to the Command key.

• C++ error message output format

- by sub
If I want to trigger an error in my interpreter I call this function: Error( ErrorType type, ErrorSeverity severity, const char* msg, int line ); However, with that I can only output Name error: Undefined variable in line 1 instead of Name error: Undefined variable 'someVariableName' in line 1 I'm working entirely with strings (except for the error messages as they all are constant at the moment), so sprintf won't work. What is the best way to create an efficient error function that can output a constant message combined with a string that describes which object, e.g.: a non-existing variable, triggered the error?
