What is the shortcut for removing the Windows boot screen logo during startup so that you can actually see all the command line commands that are running in the startup sequence?
Hello,
I have windows server 2008 sp2 installed as virtual machine on my personal laptop. I use it only for source control (visual svn) and continuous integration (teamcity). As the virtual machine resources are limited I'd like to optimize it's performance by disabling services and features that are not necessary for my purposes.
Can anyone recommend where to start or provide with tips for getting better performance.
Thanks.
There are many things you have to do/consider when you want to enable HTTP compression on IIS 6.0 (Windows Server 2003).
Can somebody please provide a comprehensive list of the actions you have to take in order to enable HTTP compression properly?
I need to know if there is a way I can automate rescanning certain folders within Windows Indexing Service. Possibly through a batch file or something like that. I have several hundred folders that need to be rescanned and I don't feel like manually right clicking and hitting rescan on each one.
On a windows server (2008), can you even telnet into the server? (not remote desktop, but via the command line)
If yes, is there much control really?
How do people automate if you can't telnet? (assuming you can't)
I would appreciate some help debugging my windows 2008 profile service. Any domain account that logs on to my 2008 machine gets a +- 20 second waiting time on "user profile service"
I am using roaming profiles, they are around 8mb in size, and most folders are already redirected to a network share.
event log registers no errors, there is more than 1 network card installed, but I have the correct card listed as "primary"
Is there any way to increase verbosity of logging on specifically the "user profile service" ?
Regards
Jeroen
Hello,
I have a Windows 2008 Server running the File Server Role and I would like to use mount points for my volumes instead of drive letters. However, I need to use the quota and file screening features of File Server Resource Manager, and it seems that they do not apply correctly to mount point folders. I am able to upload oversized files and excluded file types without any warnings.
Could someone help me with a fix or workaround for this issue?
Thanks,
Jamie

I added a user account to my Windows XP box. Now this user is only accessing the pc remotely. My question is how can I remove that user from the login welcome screen? In fact how can I eliminate the welcome screen alltogeather and just log into the box automatically from the main user account?
Thanks
On Windows Server 2008 R2 with the User Account Control Settings at the third highest level when you start explorer 'as administrator' it doesnt appear to actually grant administrative rights to the process. Is there a way to leave UAC at that level AND be able to start an explorer process as a 'real' administrator?

I've got a copy of WinXP off of MSDNAA, with a key. I've mounted it to my CD-drive, and now I'm trying to make it in to a VM.
The problem is, it seems that the thing is constantly trying to connect to a DHCP server, fails to connect and then decides no operating system was found.
The file I got off MSDNAA was an .img file, so I had to mount it to a virtual CD drive.
VmWare workstation comes with a Windows XP iso, tried that, also failed.
Hi, i am trying to install the workstation components of sql server 2008 on my windows xp sp2 machine and during the setup, the only options i have to install are the database engine and sdk. all of the other options including books, workstation components are missing.
Using the same installer disks i was able to install the whole works on a server.
I do not have any version of sql currently installed on the xp machine..
am i doing something wrong?
For an illustration, I need the Windows XP hour-glass cursor as a transparent image (PNG or whatever). Is it possible to extract the cursor from some system file?
I found a page with cursors, but the hour-glass one is missing:

I just installed Windows 7 ultimate on my Lenovo ThinkPad R61i. Everything works fine but I don't get any sound. Driver update says I have the latest version installed but my sound still doesn't work.
I have searched and asked questions on Lenovo forums but still no answers.
As per the title.
My VMWare player installation has setup the two network adaptor VMnet1 and VMnet8 and they are picked up as unidentified networks with no network access (i need this to activate my windows server installation on it).
The option to change the network location is not available (this might be because of network policy on the domain despite having set this as configurable in the local security policy section). Is there anyway i can change how these networks are detected or alter the configuration of vmware to get around this?
Can anyone recommend (free) Thesaurus software for Windows XP (that isn't WordWeb)? It has to work with British English.
I want to install standalone software that gives me easy access (right click, keyboard shortcut or something) to alternatives to the selected word when I'm writing, whether it's an email, a text doc in notepad, on an internet forum or whatever.
I've tried WordWeb but found it pretty horrible - I want something that acts more like the Thesaurus in MS Word, giving a dozen or so decent alternatives to the selected word.
I had a dns forwarder configured that seems to be choking on a particular server name so I switched to using google's dns as a forwarder (8.8.4.4). When I change that setting in Windows DNS (Server 2008 R2) Do i need to restart the dns service for the change to take effect?
I ask because i can do a nslookup on the name using 8.8.4.4 and it resolves but even with 8.8.4.4 in my forwarders list it will not resolve when i run nslookup on my local DNS server.
Does anyone know of a application that allows you to create torrent files via the command-line in Windows?
Update: I need a command-line version because I'm a programmer. I need to create the torrent programmatically, I can't have a window pop-up. There's a ton of uses for command-line torrent creation and I think it's very strange that I havent found a command line version from my hours of searching the Internet.
I'm looking for a tool that will allow me to see all of the memory used by by Windows XP/2003 machine. I know that Process Explorer and others will show you what memory is being used by each process, but I need a full graphical view of all used and unused memory on my machine. I have seen an app that does this but cannot remember the name. Anyone know of a tool like this?
There is a serious problem with one of my servers time.
At some random hours (5:59 localtime in the following example) it goes 1 hour back and keeps doing this again and again next times it reaches 5:59. Like this: 5:59-4:59 … 5:59- 4:59 and so on. It stays in the loop until I manually update its time.
The server OS is Windows 2008 R2 Standard x64, acting as a standalone web server on the internet. time zone (UTC-05:00).
