How can I cut-out distractions? Are noise-canceling headphones suitable, and are any specific models recommended?

I had a fellow programmer that used to use some headphones to help her shut out distractions and focus on her work. Lately I find that I am less able to focus without quiet and therefore I'm thinking of investing in some headphones.

I'm sorry – I suppose this is sort of an open-ended question but I don't want to spend $50 on headphones only to find out they won't help me.
