Ubuntu version on external hardrive that shows up in GRUB?

I was wondering, is it possible to have Ubuntu installed on an external harddrive and still have it show up in GRUB? Of course, you wouldn't be able boot the other HDD OS unless it was connected, but would this work?

I googled 'external HDD OS show in GRUB' and 'have external HDD show up in GRUB' but they didn't bring up anything.

Does anyone have any resources to point me to? I can see this as being useful for testing out new releases or having multiple OSs installed without having to go through the BIOS boot choice.
