• How do you debug Silverlight applications with Chrome AND hit breakpoints?

- by cplotts
I am using Visual Studio 2010 to create a Silverlight 4 application. I set a breakpoint in my code-behind, start the debug session from Visual Studio, and unfortunately, my breakpoint never gets hit. So, I eventually I tried setting my default browser to Internet Explorer ... and lo and behold ... my breakpoint gets suddenly hit. Is Chrome a supported browser for debugging Silverlight applications? If so, what am I missing in order to get this to work? Or, is Internet Explorer the only supported browser when it comes to debugging?

• How *not* to handle a compensation step on failure in an SSIS package

- by James Luetkehoelter
Just stumbed across this where I'm working. Someone created a global error handler for a package that included this SQL step: DELETE FROM Table WHERE DateDiff(MI, ExportedDate, GetDate()) < 5 So if the package runs for longer than 5 minutes and fails, nothing gets cleaned up. Please people, don't do this... Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!...(read more)

• Is the Internet Making us Smarter or Not?

- by BuckWoody
I’ve been reading recently about an exchange among some very bright folks, some who posit that the Internet with its instant-on, sometimes-right, big-statement-wins mentality is making people think in a more shallow way, teaching us to rely on others as experts and diluting our logical thought process. Others state that it broadens our perspective and extends our mental reach. Whenever I see this kind of exchange on two ends of a spectrum, I begin to wonder if both sides might be correct. I can certainly say that I have changed my way of learning, reading, and social interactions because of the Internet. And my tolerance for reading long missives has indeed gone down. I tend to (mentally and literally) “bookmark” things I never seem to have time to get back to. But I also agree that I’ve been exposed to thoughts, ideas and people I never would have encountered any other way. So how to deal with this dichotomy? Well, I’m going to go off and think about it. No, I’m really going to go off for a full week to a cabin I’ve rented in a National Forest in the Midwest. It has no indoor plumbing, phones, Internet connections or anything else – only a bed to sleep in and a place to cook a little. I’m taking one book, some paper, and a guitar with me and that’s it. I plan to spend my days walking, reading a little, playing a little on the guitar, but mostly just thinking. Those of you who know me might find this unusual. I’m an always-on, hyper-caffeinated, overly-busy, connected person. I haven’t taken a vacation in five years, at least for more than two or three days at a time. Even then, I keep us on the move constantly – our vacations aren’t cruises or anything like that. I check e-mail, post and all that. When I’m not on vacation, I live with and leverage lots of technology, and work with those that do the same. This, however, is a really “unplugged” event, and I’m hoping that it will let me unpack the things I’ve been stuffing in my head. I plan to spend a lot of time on a single subject, writing notes, thinking, and writing more notes. So after I post tomorrow's “quote of the day” I’ll be “going dark” for a week. No twitter, FaceBook, LinkedIn, e-mail, chat, none of my five blogs will get updated, and I’ll have to turn in my two articles for InformIT.com early. I won’t have access to my college class portal, so my students will be without me for a week. I will really be offline. I’ll see you in a week – hopefully a little more educated. See you then. Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

• Do assembly strong names change when new versions of .Net are released?

- by Ryan Michela
I'm trying to load an assembly that was installed as part of .Net 3.5 SP1 using Assembly.Load() by referencing its strong name. This works fine on my computer right now, but is it future proof? Will the strong name of core .Net assemblies change when patches are installed or new versions of the .Net framework are released? If so, how can I load an assembly from the GAC without using it's strong name?

• Operator & and * at function prototipe in class

- by Puyover
I'm having a problem with a class like this: class Sprite { ... bool checkCollision(Sprite &spr); ... }; So, if I have that clase, I can do this: ball.checkCollision(bar1); But if I change the class to this: class Sprite { ... bool checkCollision(Sprite* spr); ... }; I have to do this: ball.checkCollision(&bar1); So, what's the difference?? It's better a way instead other? Thank you.

• How Do I Select a `td` Element in a Row That Has a Checkbox That is Checked?

I have a table that looks somethings like this:

foo

22

...etc What I want to do is get an array of all td.metric only in rows that have the checkbox checked. • Select nth percentile from MySQL

- by mazin k.
I have a simple table of data, and I'd like to select the row that's at about the 40th percentile from the query. I can do this right now by first querying to find the number of rows and then running another query that sorts and selects the nth row: select count(*) as `total` from mydata; select * from mydata order by `field` asc limit 37,1; Can I combine these two queries into a single query?

• get n records at a time from a temporary table

- by Claudiu
I have a temporary table with about 1 million entries. The temporary table stores the result of a larger query. I want to process these records 1000 at a time, for example. What's the best way to set up queries such that I get the first 1000 rows, then the next 1000, etc.? They are not inherently ordered, but the temporary table just has one column with an ID, so I can order it if necessary. I was thinking of creating an extra column with the temporary table to number all the rows, something like: CREATE TEMP TABLE tmptmp AS SELECT ##autonumber somehow##, id FROM .... --complicated query then I can do: SELECT * FROM tmptmp WHERE autonumber>=0 AND autonumber < 1000 etc... how would I actually accomplish this? Or is there a better way? I'm using Python and PostgreSQL.

• What is an Eclipse Sprint STS "Config Set" good for?

- by HDave
I have the Spring STS plugin activated within my Eclipse project. Doing this enabled many cool Spring features including specialized management of Spring bean files. However, I noticed that the project settings for Spring allows for the creation of "Config Sets" -- which look like groups of bean configuration files. I cannot find documentation for this feature anywhere...anyone know what it does?

• Android - Service and Activity interaction

- by Chris
I want to create an app that contains a Service S and an Activity A. The Service S is responsible for preprocessing, such as preparing the data shown on the UI of the Activity A, before the Activity A gets invoked. I want to be able to invoke the Service S from outside the package, say from another Android app's Activity class B, do the preprocessing, and then when the data is ready, invoke Activity A. My questions are: What is the best way to share data between the Service S and Activity A? How can the external activity B communicate with the Service S to determine if it has completed with all its preprocessing, and the Activity A is ready to be invoked? Thanks Chris

• sharepoint: editing webpart caml

- by Jack
I added this code to my sharepoint content query web part, which is looking at an events list from my calender, .webpart file in order to only show recurring events within the next month and regular events within the next month. However, I can't get the web part imported and working. Also is there any way to replace <Month /> with a range like <Today:Today OffsetDays="30"/> except with valid code? Here is the code: <property name="QueryOverride" type="string"> <Where> <Or> <And> <Neq> <FieldRef Name="FRecurrence"/> <Value Type="Recurrance">1</Value> </Neq> <And> <Lt> <FieldRef Name="EventDate" Type="DateTime"/> <Value Type="DateTime"><Today OffsetDays="30"/></Value> </Lt> <Gt> <FieldRef Name="EventDate" Type="DateTime"/> <Value Type="DateTime"><Today /></Value> </Gt> </And> </And> <DataRangesOverlap> <FieldRef Name="EventDate" /> <FieldRef Name="EndDate" /> <FieldRef Name="RecirrenceId" /> <Value Type="DateTime"><Month /></Value> </DataRangesOverlap> </Or> </Where> </property> When I upload this I get "Unable to add selected web part(s). The file format is not valid" and when I add and I can import it but the query doesn't return anything. How can I get this to work?

• jquery attribute indexOf

- by Victor
When I am getting at an attribute onclick of custom(Reporting Services) checkbox it gives me correct result. However when I am trying to use indexOf on that result it says "Object doesn't support this property or method", i.e. this is fine, gives me a long string $('input[id*=CustomCheckBox]').click(function() { alert( $(this).attr("onclick") ); }); But this gives an error(object doesn't support this property or method): $('input[id*=CustomCheckBox]').click(function() { if ($(this).attr("onclick").indexOf("SomeString") > -1 ) { //do some processing here } } What would I need to modify so that indexOf is working properly?

• Character-encoding problem spring

- by aelshereay
Hi All, I am stuck in a big problem with encoding in my website! I use spring 3, tomcat 6, and mysql db. I want to support German and Czech along with English in my website, I created all the JSPs as UTF-8 files, and in each jsp I include the following: <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" pageEncoding="UTF-8"%> I created messages.properties (the default which is Czech), messages_de.properties, and messages_en.properties. And all of them are saved as UTF-8 files. I added the following to web.xml: <filter> <filter-name>encodingFilter</filter-name> <filterclass> org.springframework.web.filter.CharacterEncodingFilter</filterclass> <init-param> <param-name>encoding</param-name> <param-value>UTF-8</param-value> </init-param> <init-param> <param-name>forceEncoding</param-name> <param-value>true</param-value> </init-param> </filter> <locale-encoding-mapping-list> <locale-encoding-mapping> <locale>en</locale> <encoding>UTF-8</encoding> </locale-encoding-mapping> <locale-encoding-mapping> <locale>cz</locale> <encoding>UTF-8</encoding> </locale-encoding-mapping> <locale-encoding-mapping> <locale>de</locale> <encoding>UTF-8</encoding> </locale-encoding-mapping> </locale-encoding-mapping-list> <filter-mapping> <filter-name>encodingFilter</filter-name> <url-pattern>/*</url-pattern> </filter-mapping> And add the following to my applicationContext.xml: <bean id="messageSource" class="org.springframework.context.support.ResourceBundleMessageSource" p:basenames="messages"/> <mvc:interceptors> <bean class="org.springframework.web.servlet.i18n.LocaleChangeInterceptor" p:paramName="locale" /> </mvc:interceptors> <bean id="localeResolver" class="org.springframework.web.servlet.i18n.SessionLocaleResolver" /> I set the useBodyEncodingForURI attribute to true in the element of server.xml under: %CATALINA_HOME%/conf, also another time tried to add URIEncoding="UTF-8" instead. I created all the tables and fields with charset [utf8] and collection [utf8_general_ci] The encoding in my browser is UTF-8 (BTW, I have IE8 and Firefox 3.6.3) When I open the MYSQL Query browser and insert manually Czech or German data, it's being inserted correctly, and displayed correctly in my app as well. So, here's the list of problems I have: By default the messages.properties (Czech) should load, instead the messages_en.properties loads by default. In the web form, when I enter Czech data, then click submit, in the Controller I print out the data in the console before to save it to db, what's being printed is not correct having strange chars, and this is the exact data that saves to db. I don't know where's the mistake! Why can't I get it working although I did what people did and worked for them! don't know.. Please help me, I am stuck in this crappy problem since days, and it drives me crazy! Thank you in advance.

• How to get Hyper-V to recognize that a VM isn't stopping, it's stopped.

- by Matt Burke
I have a Hyper-V virtual machine that has some problems. First, its settings are apparently corrupt: The WMI object contained an invalid value in property BIOSNumLock. The WMI object contained an invalid value in property AutomaticStartupAction. Second, I saw something that implied that I could toggle the NumLock checkbox on the BIOS property page to fix the first problem, but the checkbox didn't show up. So I connected to the VM and shut it down. Now (many hours later) Hyper-V claims that the VM is "Stopping". However, when I follow the interweb's directions on forcing a VM offline (i.e. find vmwp and kill it), I can't find vmwp. The VM's WMI object has a PID that doesn't exist, and none of the vmwp processes have this machine's GUID. So, how do I trick Hyper-V into seeing that the machine is offline (or letting me delete it)?
