• How do I tell if the master volume is muted?

• Inevitable Corporate Bureaucracy

  Top executives of most smaller organizations want their companies to be different from the larger corporations. They want their organizations smaller in size; but bigger in productivity by eliminating red tapes and corporate bureaucracy. When the company is smaller, people often work like firefighters – taking on new business and technology challenges without thinking about any procedures and guidelines. People also tend to wear many hats to accomplish tasks quickly in order to integrate new businesses. For example, software developers in smaller organizations may take on responsibilities of client interactions, requirements gathering, design and development, code deployment, production support, network infrastructure support, database design and maintenance along with countless other duties. In addition, systems in smaller organizations tend to be loosely guarded. So, people often don't follow many procedures in order to setup environments and implement technical projects. It's not uncommon to change code and deploy without anyone realizing. Similarly, business requirements may also get defined in an informal manner without any type of documentation. As the company grows, everything starts to change significantly impacting people and the overall business process. Suddenly, following procedures become extremely important. Consequently, new roles, guidelines and procedures start to emerge. Everything from business process to technology implementation start to become more and more process oriented. Organizations start to define and document steps, invent procedure to track process and systems level changes, and start restricting access to various systems for security reasons. At the same time, as a growing company start doing businesses with larger clienteles, they are automatically forced to abide by all sorts of industry compliance laws. Moreover, growing companies tend to recruit experienced individuals to fill new roles who usually bring their expertise from larger and more bureaucratic organizations.   Despite the best efforts from the top executives, it seems increased number of procedures and guidelines as well as new recruits automatically contribute to the evolution of corporate bureaucracy. Maybe, corporate bureaucracy is an inevitable side effect of a growing organization.

  I wan't to integrate .NET Application Updater Component in my application for auto update of client application. It says The .NET Application Updater component uses HTTP-DAV to download the application update and thus requires a Web server that supports HTTP-DAV. IIS 5.0 that comes with Windows 2000 and newer operating systems support HTTP-DAV. My server is a Windows 2008 Server and runs IIS 7.0. Does IIS 7.0 support "HTTP-DAV"? And if yes how can I enable it?

• Unknown redirect & slow page load

  Hello: I am hosting a website with GoDaddy's "Deluxe Linux" package. Of late, I noticed my website is loading nearly 10x slower. As I begin to debug, I noticed the following redirect occurring however nothing in my script would be causing it. It hits the URL, www.domain.com, then a 302 fires to www.domain.com/39dnda, then another 302 back to www.doamin.com ??? The first 302 is random each time... • Sync Two Exchange accounts or Ready Only access to subfolders

  This is two questions kind of. The situation is as follows. I am running SBS 2008 with Exchange 2007. There is a shared account which has subfolders to keep track of the process of jobs that are coming into the company (ie: sales) I need to give other people in the company read access to this mailbox not full control. When I give ready only access to the root other users can only see the Inbox and not subfolders. Permissions have to be applied to each folder. One solution I have considered is creating a secondary mailbox that everyone could have full access too which would have a one way sync from the sales mailbox to the secondary mailbox. Then people could see what was happening without messing up the main mailbox by accident (at worst they would mess up the secondary mailbox) Ideally I could find a way to propgate the READ ONLY Permissiosn to all the subfolders. I have tried using PFDavAdmin to do this but have not been able to get it to connect successfully from Windows 7 To Exchange 2007 Any idea on how to 1. Propogate permissions (get PFDavAdmin to work??!) 2. Sync mailboxes 3. Other solution? Thanks Chris

• Linux Best Practices

  I'm a life-long Windows developer switching over to Linux for the first time, and I'm starting off with Ubuntu to ease the learning curve. My new laptop will primarily be a development machine: 6GB RAM, 320 GB HD. I'd like there to be 2 non-root users: (a) Development, which will always be me, and (b) Guest, for anyone else. I assume the root user is added by default, like System Administrator in Windows. (1) I'd like to mount /home to its own partition, but how does this work if I have two user accounts (Development and Guest)? Are there 2 separate /home directories, or do they get shared? Is it possible to allocate more space for Development and only a tiny bit of space for Guest in GRUB2? How?!?! (2) I'm assuming that its okay that all of my development tools (Eclipse & plugins, SVN, JUnit, ant, etc.) and Java will end up getting installed in non-/home directories such as /usr and /opt, but that my Eclipse/SVN workspace will live under my /home directory on a separate partition... any problems, issues, concerns with that? (3) As far as partitioning schemes, nothing too complicated, but not plain Jane either: Boot Partition, 512 MB, in case I want to install other OSes Ubuntu & non-/home file system, 187.5 GB Swap Partition, 12 GB = RAM x 2 /home Partition, 120 GB I don't have any bulky media data (I don't have music or video libraries, this is a lean and mean dev machine) so having 320 GB is like winning the lottery and not knowing what to do with all this space. I figured I'd give a little extra space to the OS/FS partition since I'll be running JEE containers locally and doing a lot of file IO, logging and other memory-instensive operations. Any issues, problems, concerns, suggestions? (4) I was thinking about using ext4; seems to have good filestamping without any space ceiling for me to hit. Any other suggestions for a dev machine? (5) I read somewhere that you need to be careful when you install software as the root user, but I can't remember why. What general caveats do I need to be aware of when doing things (installing packages, making system configurations, etc.) as root vs "Development" user? Thanks!

• SQL SERVER – Detect Virtual Log Files (VLF) in LDF

  In one of the recent training engagements, I was asked if it true that there are multiple small log files in the large log file (LDF). I found this question very interesting as the answer is yes. Multiple small Virtual Log Files commonly known as VLFs together make an LDF file. The writing of the VLF is sequential and resulting in the writing of the LDF file is sequential as well. This leads to another talk that one does not need more than one log file in most cases. However, in short, you can use following DBCC command to know how many Virtual Log Files or VLFs are present in your log file. DBCC LOGINFO You can find the result of above query to something as displayed in following image. You can see the column which is marked as 2 which means it is active VLF and the one with 0 which is inactive VLF. • Angry Bird Makers: Developers Love iOS Over Android To Make Money

  These days web is buzzing with Apple iOS vs Google Android debates. Recently Fortune predicted that Android is going to explode in 2011 and it will surpass Apple’s iOS market share. Yes Android is set to spread its wings across all the devices – smartphones, TVs, set top boxes, in car entertainment devices, what not. Think of any device that requires operating system, Android can be used. On the other than iOS is only available on very selective Apple devices – iPods, iPhones and iPads. When it comes to the count of devices running on a specific OS, Android will be far ahead of iOS but when you consider a quality of devices and providing an eco system for business to make money iOS seems to be the winner. That is what experts and analysts are saysing. Here is an excerpt from Peter Vesterbacka, maker of the popular Angry Birds game, interview to Tech N Marketing site.  He says Apple will be the number one platform for a long time from a developer perspective, they have gotten so many things right. And they know what they are doing and they call the shots. Android is growing, but it’s also growing complexity at the same time. Device fragmentation not the issue, but rather the fragmentation of the ecosystem. So many different shops, so many different models. The carriers messing with the experience again. Open but not really open, a very Google centric ecosystem. And paid content just doesn’t work on Android. Peter says developer prefer iOS over Android as it’s not very easy to make money on Android market. That’s why they released a free version of Angry Birds game with ads support for Android devices. Free is the way to go with Android. Nobody has been successful selling content on Android. We will offer a way to remove the ads by paying for the app, but we don’t expect that to be a huge revenue stream. • Writing programs without graphical IDE

  I am not sure if this is even possible but I have watched a few videos with programming examples where it seems like the program is being written in some kind of command prompt rather than a nice graphical IDE. Im just curious as to what might be going on in these videos. • How to diagnose usb issue

  Hey, So my kern.log and syslog files filled up with tons of the below messages: [514971.000109] phy0 - rt2x00usb_vendor_request: Error - Vendor Request 0x07 failed for offset 0x30c4 with error -108. I was curious as to the steps to take, commands to run, places to look to help diagnose this issue (and curious as to what caused it)? I'm guessing it's something usb elated. I had some issues with my printer earlier today so this might be related. Thanks, Alex

• Mouse running amok

  While using my mouse, it will all of a sudden take off and might run to calendar or/and trash. It opened calendar, then went down and opened trash up several times. It started out just doing it once in awhile with opening something and I didn't move it there. It did on it's own. Is someone controlling my computer? That's how it acts. I would like to get this straighted out. If it is my mouse just going berserk then I will install a new one. If it is something else, I'd like to know what could be causing it. I have my security set so no one can access my computer. Please can anyone help?

It's Time to go with the Ubuntu/Linux way for a better and faster tomorrow. Unfortunately in my country most Users/Business use Windows based Systems. As a Computer technician i want to learn and use both Systems and possibly introduce New users to more affordable Linux Based Systems. For now I want to create dual-boot or even triple boot layouts on my laptop machine Here's the layout in use now: * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 284,89GB (Primary,Boot,Pagefile,Dump) * HP_TOOLS system partition FAT32 - 99MB (Primary) * (D:) RECOVERY partition NTFS - 12,90GB (Primary) * SYSTEM partition NTFS 199MB (Primary) Here's the layout I want to make. * (C:) Windows 7 system partition NTFS - 60GB (Primary) (sda1) * (D:) Windows data partition (user files) NTFS - 60GB(Extended or Primary)(sda2);wanna share with Linux * Linux root Ext4 - 10GB (Primary)(sda3) * Linux swap swap- RAM size, 3GB (sda4) * Linux home Ext4- 164,9GB (Extended)(sda5) Question 1: Is the layout that i want to make correct as the Primary and Extended Partition concerns ? Question 2: Can I definitely get rid of SYSTEM Boot loader of windows? Question 3: If I get rid of HP_TOOLS and RECOVERY partition will it be a problem? • What's the future of online gamedev. FLASH or UNITY?

  Currently, i develop for flash, not much ago i discovered unity, not yet played with it, but i have seen so far was cool. Here are my thoughts: Flash is more casual, start with cost less, in time and money. In unity you'd likely have to go more bussines-serious (real money). There are proven bussines models in flash, like adver-gaming, ads, micro-transactions. Have not seen much movement in this in Unity, too soon maybe. Flash is too heavy. By its nature(making games) Unity is way faster. Flash is 2d, doing something 3d with it turns weird and slow. Unity is natively 3d, not optimized for 2d though, it is likely feasible as well. I am overlooking the plug-in widespread, that gap will get closed over the time.

I tried searching for tutorials to dynamically build hashes, but all I could find were introductory articles about hashes. • How access Ajax generated source ?

  Hello everyone, I created a php file that return dynamically generated text. This text is returned with a div id. When I retrieve that text using Ajax as responseText. I would like to access the properties of that div using javascript, which is impossible since that new text is not added to the DOM. My question is, how can i access that div using either raw javascript or frameworks (am somewhat familiar with jQuery) ? It may be useful to note that the div can be accessed using CSS. Thank you.

  I have read about python sched (task schedular), it works like a cron. but I have a question : lets say if i schedule a function to ryn after every 2 hours and in the mean time my system gets shut down, then I again restart the system...did the schedular automatically starts and will run the function after 2 hours? or i have to start that again after shutting down the system? did sched work like a deamon?

• Does Ruby/Rails require more unit testing than say a PHP app?

  I don't find the unit testing push in the PHP market like I see/read in the ruby/rails arena. Could one just as easily NOT unit test in ruby/rails as in php, or is ruby just too bendable and breakable that it "more" recommended to test in ruby than in php? Meaning there are large code bases like vBulletin, and from what I can tell, they don't unit test. I hope you understand what I am asking here, not the pros/cons of testing, or whether one should test or not, but rather, does one language need to be tested more than another? maybe its easy to write buggy code, or break during refactoring etc.

My question is, What if I declare a property using the @property keyword and also declare a variable in the interface block with the same name? For example, consider the following code, Interface: @interface myClass : NSObject { NSString *myClass_name; // LINE 1 } @property(nonatomic, retain) NSString *myClass_name; // LINE 2 @end Implementation: @implementation myClass @synthesize myClass_name @end Declaring myClass_name in LINE 1 will make any problem? • How to get XDebug working on Mac command line PHP

  I recently installed Zend Server Community Edition on a Mac with Snow Leopard. I can't get XDebug to work ... it shows up in the output for phpinfo from a web browser, but when I var_dump() a variable, there is no special output, and when I run phpunit, code coverage reports aren't generated. Also when I type php -m at the command line, there is nothing for XDebug. I suspect that it's because the Mac is running the executable of PHP that was bundled with it instead of the executable of PHP that came with the Zend Server install. When I type /usr/local/zend/bin/php -m, XDebug does show up. I followed the instructions at http://akrabat.com/php/some-notes-on-zend-server-ce-for-mac-os-x/. Also I downloaded the xdebug.so from the Komodo web site. Zend Debugger and all other Zend extensions are disabled. So how can I get XDebug working correctly?
