  • "Dogfooding" VS 2010 and .NET 4

    As we get ready for the launch of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4, I find myself looking back at the project to think about some of the critical factors that lead to our success.    One of the things that stands out clearly for me is our practice of dogfooding the various pieces of Visual Studio throughout the product cycle.  Here at Microsoft, we use the term dogfooding to refer to the internal use of a pre-release product in our daily work - after all, until our product...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   • Can I have a virtual firewall forward packets to another virtual machine on the same server?

    I currently have a web server running Apache using iptables for a firewall. What I would like to do is setup a new machine with XenServer and install two virtual machines--one running IPCop and one running Linux with Apache. Then I would configure IPCop to have the external IP address and forward port 80 to an internal IP on the second virtual machine. Is this even possible?

    How can a Virtual PC with Win XP on it install the East Asian Language? (or does any browser come with Chinese fonts?) After setting up a virtual PC with Win XP, if Chinese font is needed, then the usual way is to go to the Control Panel, select "Regional and Language" and go to the second tab and check the box "Install Files for East Asian Languages". After clicking OK, it asks for the file cplexe.exe on the XP SP3 CD 3... and is said to be about 230MB... In such case, how can the language pack or fonts be installed? (Update: I found that it is true for Window 7's Virtual PC with XP on it, as well as the XP SP3 with IE 8 that can be downloaded in the link below.) (I downloaded the virtual hard drive file .vhd from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=21EABB90-958F-4B64-B5F1-73D0A413C8EF&displaylang=en so there is no "CD 3"... there) Or does any browser come with all the unicode fonts without needing the OS to support it?

  • image in div doesn't display anything

    i'm trying to insert an image in a div container using css and html, but it doesn't display any image. html code: <div id="wrapper"> <div id="quoteContainer"> <span class="start_img"></span> </div> </div> css: .start_img { background: url(image/img1.png); border: dotted 2px black; width:200px; height:20px; } apart from the img, not even the border shows. i tried using the <img> tag in html to insert the image inside the div, that doesn't work either. is there anything wrong with the code?

  • replace characters which do not matches the ones in a regex

    Hi, I have this regex: private static final String SPACE_PATH_REGEX ="[a-z|A-Z|0-9|\\/|\\-|\\_|\\+]+"; I check if my string matches these regex and IF NOT, i want to replace all characters which are not here, with "_". I;ve tried like: private static final String SPACE_PATH_REGEX_EXCLUDE ="[~a-z|A-Z|0-9|\\/|\\-|\\_|\\+]+"; if (myCompanyName.matches(SPACE_PATH_REGEX)) { myNewCompanySpaceName = myCompanyName; } else{ myNewCompanySpaceName = myCompanyName.replaceAll(SPACE_PATH_REGEX_EXCLUDE, "_"); } but does not work..., so in the 2nd regex "~" seems to not omit the following chars. Any ideea?

I want to be able to add POST variables to it like $obj->addvar('Name', 'Value'); What I have now is this: function addvar($var, $val) { $postvars[] = Array($var=>$val); } function initiate() { $this->q = $postvars; } if(!empty($this->post)) { $this->params = http_build_query($q); } I haven't tested because it's too incomplete, But would my addvar() function work? How on earth do I append a key+value to the array so http_build_query would accept it?     We are working with a PHP application which has no concept of switch-able themes; the situation is that we are modifying the application to add our own features, and CSS/Smarty templates for our own look and feel. We have 2 projects base on this application, each with a different layout/presentation. Hence I need to have one repo for the base application files, and one for the CSS/smarty templates. How should I go about doing this?

    Hi, I developed an application which consists of UIPickerView....It displays as default size in height of the UIPickerView.I want to display the UIPickerView as 320x480 size(iphone simulator size)..so the whole screen has the picker view without using transorm property,because it will stretched the whole view....its not looking good...even with selection indicator also stretched...I need not stretchable picker view..but need to show the picker view with the whole screen..We can control the width of the UIPickerView..But how can we control the height of the UIPickerView.....   • Dynamic creation of VS Project

    I have a project where I create WiX (Windows Installer for XML) files, when they are not already present. It is working perfectly. Now I want to expand it to add more functionality. I was wondering if there is a way to create a Visual Studio project programmatically? This project is run as part of our nightly build process, and when a new wix file is needed it is created, but I want to have everything in place when the build is finished so if necessary you can just open the project in Visual Studio and start editing. Am I dreaming outside the realm of possibility or no? Any nudge in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.

  • Providing dynamic data to webpage

    Hi, I have a web page that displays dynamic data which changes every 2 seconds. Data is selected from various data sources including Oracle. Currently, the page reloads every 10 seconds and runs a PHP script which retrieves the data and displays the page. I have other pages that gives a different view on the same data. This means the same query is run again for them as well. If I have 4 of these pages with 10 concurrent users each, suddenly the data retrieval happens 40 times every 10 seconds, obviously not ideal. I have some ideas on how to improve this situation, but I thought I would ask from some ideas from other experts that might have come across a similar situation. I'm not bound to PHP, and my server is on a Linux platform. Regards Marius

  • How to draw a 3D donut chart in OpenGL?

    I would like to draw a chart in OpenGL similar to the donut graph at the bottom-right of this example. I have experience with drawing 2D charts such as the main chart in the example but what confuses me about the one I want to draw is the correct type of primitive to use when drawing the 3D chart. I have considered using GL_QUAD_STRIP and GL_POLYGON but neither seem quite right for the task. Where should I begin? I will be using JOGL with Java to draw the chart, if that helps at all. Also, I don't necessarily need to extrude certain slices of the chart as shown in the example.

  • Distribute EXE without config file (Webservice in WinForm)

    I have created a WinForm app (VB.NET 2008) that references to a webservice which was added via "Add Service Reference". The app works ok. Question is about distribution of the app. It looks like I need to install the app's config file with the EXE, however I don't want that because the config files shows the actual url of the web service which is not whatt I want. So, is it possible to use a webservice in a WinForm app and only have to install the resulting EXE?

  • Rails PDF Generation with Prawn in IE7

    I'm using Prawn and Prawnto to generate a PDF in a Ruby on Rails app (Rails version 2.2.2) which works great and generates PDFs happily and sends them to the user to download in Firefox. The problem is in IE7. I have a route set up like so: map.invoice_pdf '/invoices.pdf', :controller => 'invoices', :action => 'index', :format => 'pdf' Which I then have a link like so to call: invoice_pdf_path(:year => params[:year], :month => params[:month], :unpaid_only => params[:unpaid_only]) And the following in my controller: def index params[:year] = default params[:year] params[:month] = default params[:month] params[:page] ||= 1 @invoices = Arobl.find_invoices_for_customer(current_customer.strCustomerID, params) respond_to do |format| format.html{ render :action => 'index' } format.pdf{ prawnto :inline => false, :filename => "#{current_customer.strCustomerID}_invoice.pdf" end In FF this works as expected, when the link is clicked the show action is invoked with a format of .pdf, and responds with the correctly named PDF. When it's hit with IE7 it says that the file or website could not be found, and references "invoices.pdf" instead of the expected customer_id_invoice.pdf filename. Any idea what could be causing this behaviour? Thanks!

    I have to admit that I'm new to Java and Android. db4o seems to be an excellent DB framework to replace SQLite http://developer.db4o.com/Platforms/Java/Android.aspx. I want to use it for my Android application. I don't know how to: Import/Install/Attach/Upload db4o to Android phone. Where should I put the JAR file db4o-7.12.132.14217-all-java5.jar so that it was uploaded to Android phone and it could be called from the application? Please kindly advise! Many thanks!!!

  • how to compare/validate sql schema

    I'm looking for a way to validate the SQL schema on a production DB after updating an application version. If the application does not match the DB schema version, there should be a way to warn the user and list the changes needed. Is there a tool or a framework (to use programatically) with built-in features to do that? Or is there some simple algorithm to run this comparison? Update: Red gate lists "from $395". Anything free? Or more foolproof than just keeping the version number?

  • Validation for selected row in JSF h:datatable

    Hi all, I am having a tough time trying to find a solution to the following design related to h:dataTable. I have certain number of rows predisplayed. The first column is only checkboxes. The rest of the columns are disabled by default. On selecting a checkbox the elements in the corresponding rows get enabled. On submit of the for the values in the enabled row have to be validated on the server side. I am able to validate for invalid inputs but am not finding a method to use required="true" conditionally. Or any other method. Could anyone please help me on this. Thanks Barun
