• does wordpress auto update work without a cron job?

  I'm a bit on a loss here. Since WP 3.7 you can update your wordpress automatically. Since then it's more hit and miss on several servers here. I would like to understand, if it is enough to enable automatic updates described here and how this would work without a cron job. I'm under the impression right now, that the upgrade is only started, when ever someone logs into the backend, is this correct? If so, is there a way to automate the updates via a cron job?

  I have 2 internal DNS servers ( ns1 & ns 2 ) on ubuntu 12.04 which run dnscache , and my clients resolv.conf have something like nameserver ns1 nameserver ns2 nameserver 8.8.8.8 since all my load is taken by ns1 , where as ns2 sits idle until ns1 is down or not serving my request . i would like to add these 2 server under a LB VIP . but my network team wants to know the QPS of the ns servers so that their LB is loaded . so is there any way to find out the QPS of dns queries running Dncache

  I'm facing a strange ipv6 behavior and I don't know how to solve it because I'm not familiar with ipv6. Maybe this behavior is normal. I hope that you will help me. ( I'm running under debian 6.0.9 with a custom kernel 3.2.58 ) machine A is "2a00:7d30:edf6:100::1" wants to ping machine B, which is "2a00:7d30:edf6:100::10". • Create account for service

  I am configuring a new server. The server is running Hudson that is going to copy some files from this server to another. The other server is a virtual machine. Both running Windows Server 2012. Hudson is started on server A with log on as "Local System". When I come to the copy phase it says "Access denied". Changing the log on to "Administrator" works. However, I guess this is bad. I do not have much experience with user management. I tried to create a own hudson account on both servers A and B. I tried to log on as hudson account in the service-management but it doesn't start. How would you create an account for this particular service that has access to the shared folder on server B and can be used to start the service on server A? I guess I need two accounts with same username and password on server A and server B? The folder on Server B is shared with everyone and the guest account is enabled.

In godaddy when paying only for domain, without hosting, they state you can get one page hosting for free but that option only opens their web-builder. Is there any way to prevent the buyer who have physical access to your server to access contents on the drive? We want to protect our intellectual property because if the buyer steals our software, we won't have enough legal resources to pursue a claim internationally.

• understanding my site's DNS records

  firstly apologies for using the word 'pointage' this is the word my french domain registrar uses so I may have used to wrong term. OK I would like to better understand what is going on on my 'pointage' record on my domain registrars site. for my (currently empty) web site it reports the following details... Type : Host : Destination A : www.mydomain.org : 62.210.176.146 A : mail.mydomain.org : 84.246.225.176 Mx : .mydomain.org : mail.mydomain.org I think I understand the MX record, that simply relays anything onto the mail.mydomain.org location. However why are the destination for the www and mail domains different. Even more confusing (for me) is the fact that if I ping either of www.mydomain.org or mail.mydomain.org the ping returns a different IP address. This IP address is consistent with that of my server (ie 92.39.247.92). So what exactly is going on ? I'm sure I could find the information on the web,I've read a few thing on the debianhelp site regarding DNS records, and it seems to suggest that the record should be a reverse lookup, but certains isn't the reverse of my servers IP ? but I don't what I should be looking for, so links to docs and search terms for google will be happily accepteed (even though they go against the grain of SO answers to question). thanks in advance. David. ps. I should add that everything seems to work just fine, and I've just descovered this part of the management page of my registrar. Edit: Addition of DNS records and ping results. The DNS record for the site. • Can I choose a sparse file as vdev for a zfs pool?

  man zpool states that a vdev for a zfs pool can be a "regular file". Can I specify a sparse file (the warning about the integrity of the file being determined by the underlying filesystem should apply with the same relevance for a sparse file)? The ZFS administration guide on https://pthree.org/2012/12/04/zfs-administration-part-i-vdevs/ states that file vdevs "must be preallocated, and not sparse files or thin provisioned" (thanks to @jlliagre). On https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Experimenting_with_ZFS sparse files are used without any comment.

  Similar to this post, I'd like to change my proxy settings using a script. However, it fails. When I am behind the proxy, IE does not connect to the internet. None of the other virtual domains handled by postfix were affected. How can I find out what process was feeding postfix/sendmail or more info on where they originated? As far as I can tell php mail() wasn't used and I've run several open relay tests. I did a little tinkering(removed winbind from the server and ipv6 addresses from main.cf) after the attack and it seems to have subsided but I still have no idea how my server was suddenly sending out spam. Maybe I fixed it - maybe I didn't. Can anyone help figuring out how I was compromised? Anywhere else I should look? I've run Linux Malware Detect on recently changed files but nothing found.

• Postfix/dovecot remove LDAP user

  I have to remove or blacklist an LDAP/dovecot user. It's like the settings stored in LDAP are overruling the access rule. Instead of postfix rejecting the mail it keeps accepting it. Thanks!

• I just deleted "/bin". What's the best way to recover?

  I just ran (not on purpose!) rm -rf /bin. I've booted down the computer and am using Finnix to try to recover from it. I have succeeded in mounting the drive, and confirmed that, yes, the entire /bin folder is deleted. Is it possible to recover from this without reinstalling the OS? I'm thinking that I could setup a VM with the same OS and architecture (Ubuntu Server 11.10 alpha release, x86) and install all the packages I had installed on the server, then just copy the /bin folder. Will this work? Am I better off just starting over?

• Correct MySQL username/password, but getting Access Denied error when run from script

  I'm currently trying to run the following command from within a shell script. /usr/bin/mysql -u username -ppassword -h localhost database It works perfectly fine when executed manually, and not from within a script. When I try to execute a script that contains that command, I get the following error: ERROR 1045 (28000) at line 3: Access denied for user 'username'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I literally copied and pasted the working command into the script. Why the error? As a sidenote: the ultimate intent is to run the script with cron. EDIT: Here is a stripped down version of my script that I'm trying to run.   I'd like to skip the entire Grub 2 interface, where I have to decide booting Linux or Windows im running linux ubuntu lastest version (14.04.1 LTS) and windows 8.1 both 64 bit versions. I've installed easyBCD software, which I want to use as (my only) boot manager. Issue: whenever I run my computer, I get grub interface to pick Linux or Windows, after that I get easyBCD interface where I have to pick linux or windows again. If both choices are the same, proper system boots, else I get thrown back to beggining (grub UI). I'd like to somehow delete / skip grub from appearing. TLDR title :) thank you for helping!

• Is there a way to identify the device data is being received from? (python)

  Summary I have an MT4000 device connected to my computer using the serial port ttyS0. This is broadcasting data which is being received and read by a udp listener written in Python. I am also sending data manually through the terminal using a bash script I wrote. The Goal Is it possible to identify the device being used? The aim is for a web-page to allow the user to select which device they wish to see the data being sent. I would rather achieve this by directly identifying the device rather than saying anything from ttyS0, in case a different device is plugged in on that port. The Answer Is this possible, and if so, how? Everything I have found so far, is on identifying through a specific port.

• How to create a mysql database that can contain any character, also different languages

  I'm trying to create a database that has to contain articles in different languages. I'm using Mariadb as my server and I know bits of SQL. My knowledge doesn't really cover details like the differences between engines like MyISAM, InnoDB etc or character sets like utf8/16/32, latin 5/7/etc. I do know that the character set has importance, I guess what I'm looking for is an all-encompassing character set and an engine that best deals with this type of content. Also, is there an advantage in storing articles in multiple data rows (equivalent of different pages) to make things a little faster, or would you store a whole article in a single data row. Or does that depend on the size of the articles? Sorry for my noobish question, I know the information is all out on the internet but it would take me quite a long time to research and get a grip on everything. Would be cool if someone with experience could give me a little head start and point me in the right direction. This is for a intranet site, consider the content to be somewhat like a blog (and no, I don't want wordpress or something similar at this point). Not sure if it matters, but I tend to create and manipulate my tables with phpmyadmin, I use apache as web server and it all runs on Linux.

• Writing Macros to find a specific cell and paste the value from a control cell into it

  I am having some issues writing a Macro to do the following. I have a very long list of rooms with two columns one containing the room number i.e. B-CL102 and the other containing a varying integer.I am looking to create a new column that will contain another different integer for each of the rooms. Is there any way to write a Macro so that I can use two control cells at the top of the sheet, type the room number into one and the integer matching that room into another, then run the Macro and it will automatically populate the correct cell. Then I can change the two values in the control cells and run the Macro again and so on. Thanks for your help, I have a very minimal amount of experience with Macros essentially just the basics.
