  • Easiest way to recursively find and replace?

    I want to recursively search through a directory of text files and replace every occurrence of foo within the files with bar. What is the easiest way to accomplish this? I imagine that grep would do the job in one line, but I can't seem to find an example of this. I'm working in OS X.

  • How should I define a composite foreign key for domain constraints in the presence of surrogate keys

    I am writing a new app with Rails so I have an id column on every table. What is the best practice for enforcing domain constraints using foreign keys? I'll outline my thoughts and frustration. Here's what I would imagine as "The Rails Way". It's what I started with. Companies: id: integer, serial company_code: char, unique, not null Invoices: id: integer, serial company_id: integer, not null Products: id: integer, serial sku: char, unique, not null company_id: integer, not null LineItems: id: integer, serial invoice_id: integer, not null, references Invoices (id) product_id: integer, not null, references Products (id) The problem with this is that a product from one company might appear on an invoice for a different company. I added a (company_id: integer, not null) to LineItems, sort of like I'd do if only using natural keys and serials, then added a composite foreign key. LineItems (product_id, company_id) references Products (id, company_id) LineItems (invoice_id, company_id) references Invoices (id, company_id) This properly constrains LineItems to a single company but it seems over-engineered and wrong. company_id in LineItems is extraneous because the surrogate foreign keys are already unique in the foreign table. Postgres requires that I add a unique index for the referenced attributes so I am creating a unique index on (id, company_id) in Products and Invoices, even though id is simply unique. The following table with natural keys and a serial invoice number would not have these issues. LineItems: company_code: char, not null sku: char, not null invoice_id: integer, not null I can ignore the surrogate keys in the LineItems table but this also seems wrong. Why make the database join on char when it has an integer already there to use? Also, doing it exactly like the above would require me to add company_code, a natural foreign key, to Products and Invoices. The compromise... LineItems: company_id: integer, not null sku: integer, not null invoice_id: integer, not null does not require natural foreign keys in other tables but it is still joining on char when there is a integer available. Is there a clean way to enforce domain constraints with foreign keys like God intended, but in the presence of surrogates, without turning the schema and indexes into a complicated mess?

  • Problems rendering pages in FF and IE

    I am having a constant trouble with pages not rendering correctly between FF and IE. not my code below. "Select an Account" should be next to the drop down such as: Select an Account Type: "then my form" however my form goes to the next line when I want it next to "Select an Account".   • How to determine if birthday or anniversary occured during date range

    Given I have a birthday/anniversary DateTime, how can I determine if that date occurred during a specific date range? For example, Birthday = 1/2/2000 Date Range = 12/25/2008 - 1/3/2009 I need a method to determine whether or not this person's birthday happened during that date range - preferably in C#. I first went about changing the year of the birthday DateTime to match the date range, then just check if the "new" birthday DateTime is between the start and end date of the date range... but when the date range spans different years, like in my example above - I had to add a nasty if statement. Is there no better way?

  • Help with bugs in a C code

    This C code is giving me some unpredictable results. The program is meant to collect 6 nos and print out the max, position of the max no and the average.   • Is HTTP 404 appropriate for out of range page number on paged content?

    I have a site that is mainly showing a paged list of content (articles, data element's, etc.), and I'm wondering about returning HTTP 404 when user navigates outside of the available list range. Some sites just display "No results/Page number out of range" and some return additionally return HTTP 404 status. What's your take on that, and why? UPDATE It's not and api response. This question is in regard to user viewed pages that among other things show a list/table in the main area.

  • AvoidXferMode Tolerance

    I have a problem with the following code: protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) { Paint paint = new Paint(); // Draw a blue circle paint.setColor(Color.BLUE); canvas.drawCircle(100, 100, 50, paint); // Draw a red circle where it collides with the blue one paint.setXfermode(new AvoidXfermode(Color.BLUE, 0, Mode.TARGET)); paint.setColor(Color.RED); canvas.drawCircle(50, 50, 50, paint); } According to the API documentation of AvoidXfermode the tolerance value 0 means that it looks for an EXACT color match. This should work here because I specify the same color as I used for drawing the first circle. But the result is that the red circle is not drawn at all. When I use a tolerance value of 255 instead then it works (red circle is drawn where it collides with the blue one) but that sounds wrong because with such a high tolerance I think it should draw the circle EVERYWHERE. So what's wrong here? API Documentation? Android? Me?

  • How to transfer objects through the header in WCF

    I'm trying to transfer some user information in the header of the message through message inspectors. I have created a behavior which adds the inspector to the service (both client and server). But when I try to communicate with the service I get the following error: XmlException: Name cannot begin with the '<' character, hexadecimal value 0x3C. I have also get exception telling me that DataContracts where unexpected. Type 'System.DelegateSerializationHolder+DelegateEntry' with data contract name 'DelegateSerializationHolder.DelegateEntry:http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/System' is not expected. Consider using a DataContractResolver or add any types not known statically to the list of known types - for example, by using the KnownTypeAttribute attribute or by adding them to the list of known types passed to DataContractSerializer. The thing is that my object contains other objects which are marked as DataContract and I'm not interested adding the KnownType attribute for those types. Another problem might be that my object to serialize is very restricted in form of internal class and internal properties etc. Can anyone guide me in the right direction. What I'm I doing wrong?   • Problem registering a COM server written for Excel registered on client machine (can't set full path

    In this previous question <How to get COM Server for Excel written in VB.NET installed and registered in Automation Servers list? there is an example of how to create the full path to a registry key using VS 2008. Everything in the previous answer works correctly except the full path that I am setting (using the registry editor in VS) for mscoree.dll is not working (meaning it seems to do nothing). The full registry path is: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID{my_GUID}\InprocServer32(default) and the value I am setting is: [SystemFolder]mscoree.dll I can put anything (including hardcoding the full path) but the setting does not seem to matter and the registry always contains mscoree.dll without any path. I have tried adding another value to the registry path via VS and that works correctly including having the full path as specified by [SystemFolder]. The reason I need the full path (as explained in the previous question) is that without the path, Excel generates an error when the automation server is selected as it cannot find mscoree.dll (interestingly even though I receive an error the registration works OK). I am doing the install via a setup project which otherwise works fine. I am installing on a VISTA*64 system but have gotten the same error on other OS's. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

  • How can I use "Dependency Injection" in simple php functions, and should I bother?

    I hear people talking about dependency injection and the benefit of it all the time, but I don't really understand it. I'm wondering if it's a solution to the "I pass database connections as arguments all the time" problem. I tried reading wikipedia's entry on it, but the example is written in Java so I don't solidly understand the difference it is trying to make clear. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dependency_injection ). I read this dependency-injection-in-php article ( http://www.potstuck.com/2009/01/08/php-dependency-injection/ ), and it seems like the objective is to not pass dependencies to an object directly, but to cordon off the creation of an object along with the creation of it's dependencies. I'm not sure how to apply that in a using php functions context, though. Additionally, is the following Dependency Injection, and should I bother trying to do dependency injection in a functional context?     Having tried a number of mice that didn't help with wrist pain, I am contemplating buying a Wacom tablet or Evoluvent Vertical Mouse. I have heard great things about both of them. What do you recommend for someone with wrist pain in both hands that seems to be getting worse by the day? PS: I work mostly in Windows and Visual Studio environment. I currently have the MS natural ergonomic keyboard. I have started taking regular breaks and am also planning to see a doctor.

  • problem with iterate over java.util.Map using "JSF" OR JSTL TAGS

    I'm using Richfaces jsf and I want to iterate over an Map<Object,Object>. I see many examples on sun forums and other sites but in my case it doesn't work ! here is my xhtml code : <c:forEach items="#{order.customOptions}" var="option"> <h:outputText value="this text does not print"/> <h:outputText value="#{option.value.name}" /> <h:outputText value="#{option.value.key}" /> </c:forEach> and the "order" object is of type "Order".   • Is there a way to log when a particular memory location gets written and by which function?

    I'm having a bug in my c++ program which happens very rarely but crashes my program. It's seems I have some buffer overflow problem or something similar. I find that these types of bug are most difficult to find. My program always crashes because of the same corrupted memory location. I'm wondering if there is some debugging tool which could detect when a particular memory location get written to and logs the function which does it. I'm using VLD (visual leak detector) for my memory leak hunting and it works great. It substitutes the original mallocs which its own and logs every allocation. I was wondering if there is something similar for memory? I know that something like that would cripple a program, but it could be really helpful.

    I have 2 mysql tables : Question with the following columns : id, question, nranswers Nranswers must be a number from 1 to 5 And the other table is Answers with the following columns: userid, answer . Now the problem is that I want to get the replies for each answer for one question(id 22 let's say) . P.S. If the nranswers is 3, the result should look like this: (the right number means how many times the reply number was chosen) 1 - 2 2 - 8 3 - 7 If the nranswers is 5, the result should look like this: 1 - 3 2 - 8 3 - 14 4 - 19 5 - 8 Please help me out with the query, atm he's not counting the answers that weren't chosen, only the ones that were chosen at least one time.
