  • try finally block around every Object.Create?

    - by max
    Hi, I have a general question about best practice in OO Delphi. Currently, I but a try finally block around everywhere, where I create an object, to free that object after usage (to avoid memory leaks). E.g.: aObject := TObject.Create; try aOBject.AProcedure(); ... finally aObject.Free; end; instead of: aObject := TObject.Create; aObject.AProcedure(); .. aObject.Free; To you think, it is good practice, or too much overhead? And what about the performance?

  • Android project problem

    - by qwerty
    Hello, here I uploaded my Android project made in Eclipse. The idea is that i have a service, which computes the sum of two random numbers. But when i press the OK Button, i don't see the result in that edit box... why? What i'm doing wrong? Please help Thanks! EDIT: The code: //service class package service; import java.util.Random; import com.android.AplicatieSuma; import android.widget.EditText; import android.widget.TextView; public class ServiciuSuma { public ServiciuSuma() { } public int CalculateSum() { Random generator=new Random(); int n=generator.nextInt(); int m=generator.nextInt(); return n+m; } } The Application class: package com.android; import android.app.*; import service.*; public class ApplicationSum extends Application { public ServiciuSuma service = new ServiciuSuma(); } and the main Activity class: package com.android; import com.android.R; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.Intent; import android.graphics.Color; import android.graphics.PorterDuffColorFilter; import android.graphics.drawable.Drawable; import android.graphics.PorterDuff; import android.os.Bundle; import android.provider.Settings; import android.view.View; import android.view.View.OnClickListener; import android.widget.EditText; import android.view.Menu; import android.view.MenuInflater; import android.view.MenuItem; public class Activitate extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); View btn_ok = findViewById(R.id.btn_ok); btn_ok.setOnClickListener(new OnClickListener() { public void onClick(View v) { CalculeazaSuma(); } }); } private void CalculeazaSuma() { AplicatieSuma appState = ((AplicatieSuma)this.getApplication()); EditText txt_amount = (EditText)findViewById(R.id.txt_amount); txt_amount.setText(appState.service.CalculateSum()); //BindData(); } } So that edit text does not show the sum of the random generated numbers, by the service. What's wrong? Thanks EDIT: the manifest xml file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" package="com.android" android:versionCode="1" android:versionName="1.0.1"> <supports-screens android:largeScreens="true" android:normalScreens="true" android:smallScreens="true" android:anyDensity="true" /> <application android:name="ApplicationSum" android:icon="@drawable/icon" android:label="@string/app_name" android:debuggable="true"> <activity android:label="@string/app_name" android:name=".Activitate"> <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> </application> <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="7" android:targetSdkVersion="7" /> </manifest>

  • Is it possible to "intercept" a 3rd party library's "WriteFile" operation

    - by stout
    This is likely a long shot, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I'm using a document management system's API. They provide a "WriteFile" method to save a given document to disk. However, the library does not have a way to simply read a document into memory. My only option, it seems, is to write to disk, then read it back in again. I'm wondering if there is a better way to work around this obvious limitation. Thanks in advance!

  • Vector graphics on iPhone

    - by burki
    Hello! How you can use EPS files within your UIView. What do I have to do to display for example a EPS on the iPhone's screen? Do I need to convert it first to a PDF (if yes, how?)? Or are there any other way to bring vector graphics onto the iPhone? That would be very nice. Thanks.

  • switch vs. if...else if...else

    - by John Hartsock
    Guys I have a couple of questions: Is there a preformance difference in Javascript between a switch statement and an if...else if....else? If so why? Is the behavior of switch and if...else if...else different across browsers? (FireFox, IE, Chrome, Opera, Safari) The reason for asking this question is it seems that I get better preformance on a switch statement with approx 100 cases in Firefox. But in IE it get better preformance with 100 if...else if...else.

  • How to get a folder from CAML Query?

    - by Vijay
    I have a List which has a two level hierarchy of folders. Something like this: List Folder_1 SubFolder_1 Item 1_1_1 Item 1_1_2 SubFolder_2 Item 1_2_1 Item 1_2_2 Item 1_2_3 Folder_2 SubFolder_1 Item 2_1_1 Item 2_1_2 Item 2_1_3 SubFolder_2 Item 2_2_1 Item 2_2_2 I want to add a list item to a folder depending on some criteria. I don't want to loop through all folders as the number of folders is more. So, I thought of running a CAML query to get the folder. Below CAML Query gives me all folders in the list: <Where> <Eq> <FieldRef Name='FSObjType' /> <Value Type='int'>0</Value> </Eq> </Where> How can I add another condition to the above query so that I can get a specific folder when I know the exact folder name?

  • Using twitter gem to signup and authenticate users

    - by Jim Jones
    Hi, I'd like to allow users the option to register using their Twitter account. Basically, I'll present them with a standard signup form (name, login, email, pwd, pwd_confirm) as well as a "Signup with Twitter" link. If a user chooses to signup with Twitter creds, then I'll create a user record in db. Then I'd like to be able to allow a user to authenticate using their Twitter creds on returning visits. Also, I'm using restful_authentication, so I need to have this work within that context. What is the best way to do this? I haven't been to find any tutorials on allowing the signup and authentication pieces. Most examples just show how to authenticate a Twitter user into your app. Thanks.

  • Histogram matching - image processing - c/c++

    - by Raj
    Hello I have two histograms. int Hist1[10] = {1,4,3,5,2,5,4,6,3,2}; int Hist1[10] = {1,4,3,15,12,15,4,6,3,2}; Hist1's distribution is of type multi-modal; Hist2's distribution is of type uni-modal with single prominent peak. My questions are Is there any way that i could determine the type of distribution programmatically? How to quantify whether these two histograms are similar/dissimilar? Thanks

  • Linux distro structure

    - by A.Rashad
    It seems either I am not looking in the right places or documentation is scarce. Where to find an illustration of a typical Linux distro? Something to say that this is a kernel, these are the components, this is X11, GNOME, these are the components, etc. I have been deciphering documents assuming you know what all these things are, and it seems I am missing something.

  • Virtual PC 2007 Full Screen Resolution

    - by Swami
    I have a laptop (1440 x 900) and an external monitor (1920 x 1200), and I'm running Virtual PC 2007. Initially, my VPC could not switch to fullscreen mode on my external monitor because the max resolution for VPC was only 1600 x 1200. I installed a hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958162) and after the hotfix, I was able to view VPC in fullscreen mode on my external monitor, but now I'm unable to view fullscreen on my laptop. It says "please check that the resolution of the guest is not higher than that of the host". I even tried to decrease the resolution of my Virtual PC to less than than of my laptop, but it always resets it back up. So now after the hotfix, I can view fullscreen mode only when my external monitor is plugged in. Any way I can resolve this?

  • Is it possible to run multiple instances/windows of Finder in Mac OS X?

    - by sunpech
    Mac OS X's Finder seems to be the equivalent to Windows Explorer. In Windows, I enjoy having multiple instances of Explorer open to move/copy files from one folder in a window, to another folder in another window. How can I achieve this in Snow Leopard? I'd like to have shortcut key, as well as a dock icon solution. Or maybe there's a better program than Finder out there that does this?

  • Tips on ensuring Model Quality

    - by [email protected]
    Given enough data that represents well the domain and models that reflect exactly the decision being optimized, models usually provide good predictions that ensure lift. Nevertheless, sometimes the modeling situation is less than ideal. In this blog entry we explore the problems found in a few such situations and how to avoid them.1 - The Model does not reflect the problem you are trying to solveFor example, you may be trying to solve the problem: "What product should I recommend to this customer" but your model learns on the problem: "Given that a customer has acquired our products, what is the likelihood for each product". In this case the model you built may be too far of a proxy for the problem you are really trying to solve. What you could do in this case is try to build a model based on the result from recommendations of products to customers. If there is not enough data from actual recommendations, you could use a hybrid approach in which you would use the [bad] proxy model until the recommendation model converges.2 - Data is not predictive enoughIf the inputs are not correlated with the output then the models may be unable to provide good predictions. For example, if the input is the phase of the moon and the weather and the output is what car did the customer buy, there may be no correlations found. In this case you should see a low quality model.The solution in this case is to include more relevant inputs.3 - Not enough cases seenIf the data learned does not include enough cases, at least 200 positive examples for each output, then the quality of recommendations may be low. The obvious solution is to include more data records. If this is not possible, then it may be possible to build a model based on the characteristics of the output choices rather than the choices themselves. For example, instead of using products as output, use the product category, price and brand name, and then combine these models.4 - Output leaking into input giving the false impression of good quality modelsIf the input data in the training includes values that have changed or are available only because the output happened, then you will find some strong correlations between the input and the output, but these strong correlations do not reflect the data that you will have available at decision (prediction) time. For example, if you are building a model to predict whether a web site visitor will succeed in registering, and the input includes the variable DaysSinceRegistration, and you learn when this variable has already been set, you will probably see a big correlation between having a Zero (or one) in this variable and the fact that registration was successful.The solution is to remove these variables from the input or make sure they reflect the value as of the time of decision and not after the result is known.
