  • Why do browsers have so many possible exploits?

    When browsing I am ocassionally given warnings about pages that host malware "that could damage my computer". I am seriously perplexed as to why, in 2010, browsers still have possible exploits and can be cracked. My question is "Why?". I'm assuming it's because of the quick development that occured in the browser wars which were unsufficiently tested, but I'm unsure. Surely WebKit would have patched all the issues in KHTML, or Gecko sorted out the flaws in Netscape's engine, and the IE coders sorted through their codebase to eliminate possible flaws?   • Search for files after a relative date using Windows search

    I am looking for a way to save a search that includes a relative date. Specifically I am looking for a way to save a search that matches files that have a modification date that is 7 days ago. I have read the Windows Search Advanced Query Syntax document and I am not seeing a way to say 7 days ago. The numbers and ranges section does mention that relative dates are possible. The problem is that the relative dates described there do not fit the criteria I need. The lastweek almost looks like what I want except if I run a query like after:lastweek on a Monday it will only show my file that have been modified since Sunday at 12:00. The lastweek/lastmonth seem to relative to the start of the week/month which is not what I need. Multi-word relative dates: week, next month, last week, past month, or coming year. The values can also be entered contracted, as follows: thisweek, nextmonth, lastweek, pastmonth, comingyear. One nice thing about saved searches is that they are stored as an XML document and the file format is documented. I am not seeing how to form a correct value for a datetime. If I was able to understand this format, I suspect I could use a text editor and created a saved search that does what I want.   • rename files with the same name

    Hi. I use the following function to rename thumbnails. For example, if I upload a file called "image.png" to an upload folder, and this folder already has a file named "image.png" in it, the new file automatically gets renamed to "image-copy-1.png". If there also is a file called "image-copy-1.png" it gets renamed to "image-copy-2.png" and so on. The following function returns the new filename. At least that's what it is supposed to do... The renaming doesn't seeem to work correctly, though. Sometimes it produces strange results, like: 1.png 1-copy-1.png 1-copy-2.png 1-copy-2-copy-1.png 1-copy-2-copy-3.png I hope you understand my problem, despite my description being somewhat complex... Can you tell me what went wrong here?   • How to direct people to fill out a form

    What is the best way to get people to fill out a form correctly? For instance I originally had a "Name" field on a form and I want 1 person per form. People filled it out like this: "Mark & Becky Newsman". So I broke it into 2 fields, "First Name" and "Last Name", And people are still filling it out wrong, like "First Name" = "Mark & Becky", "Last Name" = "Newsman". Are there any recommendations on how better to get people to understand that only one person's name should go there? I currently have it on two lines, would it work better to put both fields on one line? If this is on the wrong site go ahead and move it to the correct site.

    Hi guys! Tried to make a little old school ajax (iframe-javascript) script. A bit of mootools is used for DOM navigation Description: HTML: 1 iframe called "buffer" 1 div called "display" JAVASCRIPT: (short: copy iframe content into a div on the page) 1) onLoad on iframe triggers handler(), a counter makes sure it only run once (this is because otherwise firefox will go into feedback loop. What i think happens: iframe on load handler() copyBuffer change src of iframe , and firefox takes that as an onload again) 2) copybuffer() is called, it sets src of iframe then copies iframe content into div, then erases iframe content THE CODE: count=0; function handler(){ if (count==0){ copyBuffer(); count++; } } function copyBuffer(){ $('buffer').set('src','http://www.somelink.com/'); if (window.frames['buffer'] && $('display') ) { $('display').innerHTML = window.frames['buffer'].document.body.innerHTML; window.frames['buffer'].document.body.innerHTML=""; } } problems: QUESTION 1) nothing happens, the content is not loaded into the div. But if i either: A) remove the counter and let the script run in a feedback loop: the content is suddenly copied into the div, but off course there is a feedback loop going on, you can see it keeps loading in the status bar. OR B) insert an alert in the copyBuffer function. The content is copied, without the feedback loop. why does this happen? QUESTION 2) The If wrapped around the copying code i got from a source on the internet. I am not sure what it does? If i remove it the code does not work in: Safari and Chrome.   • Vsync in Flex/Flash/AS3?

    I work on a 2D shooter game with lots of moving objects on the screen (bullets etc). I use BitmapData.copyPixels(...) to render entire screen to a buffer:BitmapData. Then I "copyPixels" from "buffer" to screen:BitmapData. The framerate is 60. private var bitmap:Bitmap = new Bitmap(); private var buffer:Bitmap = new Bitmap(); private function start():void { addChild(bitmap); } private function onEnterFrame():void { // render into "buffer" // copy "buffer" -> "bitmap" } The problem is that the sprites are tearing apart: some part of a sprite got shifted horizontally. It looks like a PC game with VSYNC turned off. Did anyone solve this problem? UPDATE: the question is not about performance, but about getting rid of screen tearing. [!] UPDATE: I've created another question and here you may try both implementations: using Flash way or BitmapData+copyPixels()

I was able to find how to do it on Windows here Some readings point to creating daemons or cron tasks. I just need something simple I can call on my box's reboot, and can stop/start whenever I please. my script has an internal sleep call, and runs in "eternal loop" thanks in advance

  • How to check for mutual existence of Fields in same table in Two columns

    I tried using "Exist" and "IN". Not only did I not succeed, it didn't seem as an efficient solution. Here is a simplified example: TblMyTable WorkerUserName  -  WorkerDegree  -  ManagerUserName  -  ManagerDegree I need a query where there is a mutual connection / existence. What I mean is only where the worker, ex. "John" has a manager named "Mary", and where Mary the manager has a worker named "John". John the worker can have several managers and Mary the manager can have several workers. So the result will be (the order doesn't matter) ideally in one line: John - BSc  --  Mary - M.A. or Mary - M.A.  --  John - BSc The punchline is it's only one table. it is not really managers and workers, this is just a simplification of the situation. In the real situation both are equal, in a Table of names of users working with other users. Database is SQL 2005. Many thanx in advance

  • Ajax "deselects" hyperlink under the mouse cursor.

    I have a page that performs an Ajax request that replaces a div every second. This div also has hyperlinks in it. If the user tries to click one of the hyperlinks, it will work, but if they move the cursor over the link, wait for a second without moving the cursor, the hyperlink no longer has the "hover" pseudostyle and if they click at the wrong time, the link doesn't work. Is there a way to update the div without causing this, or to restore the "mouse over" state of the link?

  • Google App Engine, Java, and HTTP Performance

    A friend and I are currently working on a turn-based game with chat with both desktop browser and Android clients, with Google App Engine as the server. We're using the Java API for GAE and using HTTP for communication with the server. We've implemented simple chat functionality, and we're getting undesirable latencies 1-3 seconds from both the browser and Android clients while just posting simple one-word chat messages. My friend thought it would be best to use XMPP instead of HTTP, but we want to use a Google Accounts cookie for authentication from the Android client, and according to the GAE documentation, XMPP clients cannot use a Google Accounts cookie and must use the user's password. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where the latency might be coming from, how to troubleshoot it, and/or what to do about it? Also, is anyone aware of any opensource implementations of chat (or something similar) on GAE done in Java? Can't seem to find any.

  • What is an example of a website/service which _isn't_ REST?

    So I just started digging into web tech, and I'm stuck on the concept of REST. Could someone clarify REST by giving me an example of what isn't rest? So, as far as I can tell, REST requires the server and client to both be in the same state at the end of every request-response HTTP transfer. Does that sound right? My understanding is that, if a client stores state information locally (which the server does not know about), that service is NOT rest. Thanks in advance.

  • How can I determine if a given git hash exists on a given branch?

    Background: I use an automated build system which takes a git hash as input, as well as the name of the branch on which that hash exists, and builds it. However, the build system uses the hash alone to check out the code and build it -- it simply stores the branch name, as given, in the build DB metadata. I'm worried about developers accidentally providing the wrong branch name when they kick off a build, causing confusion when people are looking through the build history. So how can I confirm, before passing along the hash and branch name to the build system, that the given hash does in fact come from the given branch?

  • Does the Eclipse editor have an equivalent of emacs's "align-regex"?

    I've been using Eclipse pretty regularly for several years now, but I admit to not having explored all the esoterica it has to offer, particularly in the areas of what formatting features the editors offer. The main thing I miss from (X)emacs is the "align-regex" command, which let me take several lines into a region and then format them so that some common pattern in all lines was aligned. The simplest example of this is a series of variable assignments: var str = new String('aString'); var index = 0; var longCamelCaseObjectName = new LongNameObject(); After doing align-regex on "=", that would become: var str = new String('aString'); var index = 0; var longCamelCaseObjectName = new LongNameObject(); Now, you may have your own thoughts on stylistic (ab)use of white space and alignment, etc., but that's just an example (I'm actually trying to align a different kind of mess entirely). Can anyone tell me off-hand if there's an easy key-combo-shortcut for this in Eclipse? Or even a moderately-tricky one?

  • No right-click event Firefox 3.6

    I'm in the process of porting an app to JavaScript/CSS and it uses right-click. For some reason Firefox 3.6 for Windows isn't issuing a right-click event, but Chrome and IE do. Here's some test code.   • How to remove svn folders over FTP

    Hi there, I've accidentally copied a large part of a folder tree from my SVN working copy to my shared Windows web host via FTP. The site is now littered with .svn directories and and I need some way of cleaning them. The only access I have to the server is via FTP, or by running a script on the server. Does any one have a script which can be run remotely to remove the files over FTP (any language Windows/Linux is fine) or a script in ASP, ASP.net or PHP I can run directly on the server to remove these directories?   • GDI+ Load a jpg and save as 24bit png problem

  • Scheduling a RichCopy Jobs

    Anyone use the timer feature of RichCopy? I have a job that works fine when I manually start the job. However, when I schedule the job and click run, the app appears to be waiting for the scheduled time to elapse yet never fires. Interesting enough when I stop the job the copy starts. Anyone have any experience with using RichCopy timer? IanB
