  • Am I programming too slow?

    - by Jonn
I've only been a year in the industry and I've had some problems making estimates for specific tasks. Before you close this, yes, I've already read this: http://programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/648/how-to-respond-when-you-are-asked-for-an-estimate and that's about the same problem I'm having. But I'm looking for a more specific gauge of experiences, something quantifiable or probably other programmer's average performances which I should aim for and base my estimates. The answers range from weeks, and I was looking more for an answer on the level of a task assigned for a day or so. (Note that this doesn't include submitting for QA or documentations, just the actual development time from writing tests if I used TDD, to making the page, before having it submitted to testing) My current rate right now is as follows (on ASP.NET webforms): Right now, I'm able to develop a simple data entry page with a grid listing (no complex logic, just Creating and Reading) on an already built architecture, given one full day's (8 hours) time. Adding complex functionality, and Update and Delete pages add another full day to the task. If I have to start the page from scratch (no solution, no existing website) it takes me another full day. (Not always) but if I encounter something new or haven't done yet it takes me another full day. Whenever I make an estimate that's longer than the expected I feel that others think that I'm lagging a lot behind everyone else. I'm just concerned as there have been expectations that when it's just one page it should take me no more than a full day. Yes, there definitely is more room for improvement. There always is. I have a lot to learn. But I would like to know if my current rate is way too slow, just average, or average for someone no longer than a year in the industry.

  • Setting up Developers Conference

    - by Darknight
In our local city in the UK, there are as far as I am aware no developer conferences. I am confident that our region has many professional developers as well as many graduating students whom who really benefit from a conference. I would like to ask the following questions: What steps or advice would one take if the task was given to set up a local developers conference? What would the costing look like? (excluding building/hosting of website(s)) How would one build interest and promote this? How would I approach, Local Companies & Universities to collaborate with them? I'm not just aiming this question to users who may have experience in setting up such conferences (but are highly welcome). Rather how would you attack this if you was tasked with this?

  • How to remove a package from the list of packages to be installed in apt-get?

    - by George
After I tried installing vim using apt-get install, apt-get keeps giving me a segmentation fault while trying to install vim-runtime. I'm pretty sure it's just with that one specific package, and whenever I try to do apt-get install to install any other package, vim-runtime is in the list of packages that will be installed, and it's always the first package that tries to install, so I can't install any other packages. How can I remove vim-runtime from the list of packages that will be installed? It always shows up even if it is not a dependency of a package I want to install. Note: This is on an Ubuntu rootfs running on ARM.

  • Tried to install some software, it says some packages are damaged, cannot fix them

    - by lempira
So, I go to the Ubuntu Software Center, as soon as it opens, a window pops up with the following text: "Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired. Do you want to repair it now?" Then I click the "Repair" button, then a new window pops up with the following text: "Package operation failed. The installation or removal of a software package failed." Then I click on the "Details" button, which returns me the following text: installArchives() failed: Can't exec "locale": No such file or directory at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Encoding.pm line 16. • How to configure an Ubuntu 12.04 virtual server and VMWare ESXi5 the way VMWare would be able to shut it down properly?

    - by Ivan
I run an Ubuntu 12.04 server as a virtual machine on a VMWare ESXi 5 server. I've configured VMWare to shut the quest machines down the sane way (with an ACPI (if I understand it righ) shutdown signal so that guest OSes would do it). And this works with other VMs (running Windows 7 Professional and openSuSE) but doesn't work with the Ubuntu server - VMWare still offers just to power them off when I ask it to stop the guest. Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Why don't we have an "unofficial" software center with all the PPAs?

    - by balki
Many questions are answered simply with add this repository and install. I understand that Ubuntu developers cannot quickly verify all packages and make them available in official repositories. But is there an unofficial main repository or software center where developers can register their PPAs? Adding individual repositories is a pain and the update also takes longer as it has to check all the PPAs. Like we have alternative markets for android, it would be great if there are any popular alternative software sources that we can reasonably trust.

  • Can you be a manager and a programmer at the same time?

    - by Pierre 303
Managing other programmers while you are yourself a part of the programming work force. It's a very common scheme, at least in the companies I worked for. Can you be a good programmer or a good manager if you do both at the same time? I'm questioning the effectiveness of an individual that has to be in two very different roles, requiring very different skills, environment, concentration, organization, etc.

  • How does the Ubuntu upgrade process work?

    - by IDWMaster
How does Ubuntu upgrade seamlessly to a newer distribution, while the operating system is still running? I'm upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04, and I've upgraded several times before, and it's as simple as running update-manager -d and downloading and installing them, then rebooting. How exactly does this work though? How is the upgrade manager able to update the operating system while it is still in use?

  • Energy saving with two batteries (Gigabyte S1080 and similar)

    - by user37155
my today question is: how do I manage a tablet (Gigabyte 1080) with an additional battery in Ubuntu ? The control bar shows two separate batteries but starts to suck all the energy from the secundary battery, not leaving any power in it and ruining it (if I don't remove it earlier), and then starts with the primary battery. Here you find a description of the secundary battery: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3837#kf Do you have some solutions for a more confortable use of te device, with windows-like drivers maybe ? Is there a graphical tool to manage two batteries in Linux, in order not to ruin them, and possibly to save energy with them ? Many thanks and greetings, Francesco

  • What should I do when the GETDEB repository is down?

    - by 13east
I'm trying to install programs/files from the getdeb repo but get a "check your internet connection" error. Programs than I've tried include Qbittorrent and Mozilla-Plugin-VLC. Through the terminal I get the following errors: Err http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu/ natty-getdeb/apps qbittorrent amd64 2.8.2-1~getdeb2 Could not connect to archive.getdeb.net:80 (209.105.191.78). - connect (113: No route to host) E: Failed to fetch http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu/pool/apps/q/qbittorrent/qbittorrent_2.8.2-1~getdeb2_amd64.deb: Could not connect to archive.getdeb.net:80 (209.105.191.78). - connect (113: No route to host) & Err http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu/ natty-getdeb/apps mozilla-plugin-vlc amd64 1.1.10-1~getdeb1 Could not connect to archive.getdeb.net:80 (209.105.191.78). - connect (113: No route to host) E: Failed to fetch http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu/pool/apps/v/vlc/mozilla-plugin-vlc_1.1.10-1~getdeb1_amd64.deb: Could not connect to archive.getdeb.net:80 (209.105.191.78). - connect (113: No route to host) I'm not having any problems adding/removing other programs/files from my machine. Is there a problem with GETDEB repo (and if so, is there any way to fix it on my end) or is there something wrong with my computer's configuration?

  • Should we encourage coding styles in favor of developer's autonomy, or discourage it in favor of consistency?

    - by Saeed Neamati
A developer writes if/else blocks with one-line code statements like: if (condition) // Do this one-line code else // Do this one-line code Another uses curly braces for all of them: if (condition) { // Do this one-line code } else { // Do this one-line code } A developer first instantiates an object, then uses it: HelperClass helper = new HelperClass(); helper.DoSomething(); Another developer instantiates and uses the object in one line: new HelperClass().DoSomething(); A developer is more easy with arrays, and for loops: string[] ordinals = new string[] {'First', 'Second', 'Third'}; for (i = 0; i < ordinals.Length; i++) { // Do something } Another writes: List<string> ordinals = new List<string>() {'First', 'Second', 'Third'}; foreach (string ordinal in ordinals) { // Do something } I'm sure that you know what I'm talking about. I call it coding style (cause I don't know what it's called). But whatever we call it, is it good or bad? Does encouraging it have an effect of higher productivity of developers? Should we ask developers to try to write code the way we tell them, so to make the whole system become style-consistent?

  • Hibernation is still missing from menu in 13.10 after enabling via polkit. How to enable?

    - by LiveWireBT
I know that since 12.04, we need to add a policykit rule to enable hibernation (see question How to enable hibernation? and the Official Documentation). I can successfully bring my laptop into hibernation mode with sudo pm-hibernate or sudo s2disk, so the rule is in place and works, but the hibernation entry is still missing in the menu. I can tell from looking through the source of the indicator-session package (but not understanding the whole code) that there is still a hibernation menu entry in the code and it should be displayed when the system is capable of hibernating. Please calm down if you're enraged by this. This is very unlikely to be a conspiracy, but rather a bug/regression on a deeper level, which can happen when you move code around or replace it. Question: What needs to be done in 13.10 to properly tell indicator-session that the system can hibernate? Possible duplicate: Hibernation still not available - No activity, because saucy was in development at that time, so out of scope for AskUbuntu. Related bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-session/+bug/1232814

  • New Job Over Budget

    - by moneylotion
I recently started a new job as a contract developer, and my non-developer boss of about two weeks ago gave me the task to re-create an app from another language and developer that he will reuse with multiple clients (replacing the front-end), that I estimated would take longer than his estimate of 12 hours. Two weeks later, I'm 230% over-budget. I admit this was my 2nd web app, I had been a wordpress developer in the past, so I am somewhat new to code igniter, but not shabby php by any means. My boss hired me knowing this and I was clear that it would take longer than his 12 hours. He's seen me in the office on task for 2 weeks, he should be somewhat prepared for this bill. Do I expect the full amount of hours, or do I filter against how much of learned? Can I bill for research as a developer?

  • Long term planning and agile?

    - by Ignite
My team has recently went through the process of laying out a nearly one year plan for our direction of work. We have separated the plan into three phases and each phase will include a couple of launches. I wonder, from an agile point of you, is what we do wrong? I think it's not a bad idea, because we haven't spent too much time on designing anything but the first few steps and it's possible for us to change direction. At the same time it's nice that we don't act with only the near term in sight.

  • Requirement, architecture data capture tool

    - by Deno
Are there any tools available for the following use case: I am planning to write a complex application and now I just know about the basic functional requirments. I am refining the functionality with more and more details. I am also writing down how to implement this in software architecture perspective. I am in a situation where there are multiple ways implement a certain functionality and based on the selected approach, other parts of the program will also change. At this moment, I don't want to decide on the approach to use, I just want to list down all the options, present to a wider audience and get it finalized. Are there any standard software tools to do this? I know I can use MS excel or some mind mapper tools, but just thinking of some standard tools (not just for programmers, but for managers and other) availability Thanks, Den

  • How to handle "porting" software that's still in development

    - by BAM
My company is building an iOS version of an Android app that our client is developing (but has not yet released). We have access to the latest builds and source, however since the software is frequently re-structured and refactored, we're doing a lot of unnecessary re-work. In addition, the due date on the contract will likely be passed before the client's application is even ready for release. In other words, we're supposed to build the iOS version before the original Android version is even complete. Luckily the client tossed out the original deadline, but now we may have to renegotiate pricing... never a fun situation. Are we handling this incorrectly? How are "ports" (especially between mobile platforms) normally done? Is there a correct way to pipeline development for multiple platforms without so much re-work? Thanks in advance! :)

  • What "version naming convention" do you use?

    - by rjstelling
Are different version naming conventions suited to different projects? What do you use and why? Personally, I prefer a build number in hexadecimal (e.g 11BCF), this should be incremented very regularly. And then for customers a simple 3 digit version number, i.e. 1.1.3. 1.2.3 (11BCF) <- Build number, should correspond with a revision in source control ^ ^ ^ | | | | | +--- Minor bugs, spelling mistakes, etc. | +----- Minor features, major bug fixes, etc. +------- Major version, UX changes, file format changes, etc.

  • How to enable hibernate on Ubuntu 13.10?

    - by mjwittering
Something I usually do after installing Ubuntu is reactivate the hibernation function. I find it quite useful to function for the more energy concious. Typically, I'd complete the instructions in this tutorial for Ubuntu 12.04 and I'd be back in business. However, it does seem to work any more. Any suggestions? http://www.howtogeek.com/113923/how-to-re-enable-hibernate-in-ubuntu-12.04/ sudo gedit /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla [Enable Hibernate] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes
