  • vmware player xorg driver broke after ubuntu 12.04 LTS automatic system update on 06/07/2014

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as a virtual machine on a Windows 7 host using vmware player 6.0.2. On Sat. 06/07/2014, Ubuntu performed an automatic system update as it does regularly, however after reboot, the display driver seems to be broken which causes the screen to split into many identical panels. This pretty much rendered the VM unusable. Below is the log entry for that update from /var/log/apt/history.log It appears that at least one of these updates have caused this problem. The exact same problem has been reported on the vmware forum as well, see https://communities.vmware.com/message/2388776#2388776 So far I have not been able so find a solution.     I just finished install sharepoint 3.0 on a w2k3 enterprise server. It says installation successfully completed.     My wife has just had a new computer for Christmas (with an upgrade from VISTA to Windows 7), and has joined the home network. We are using a mix of WindowsXP and Ubuntu boxes linked via a switch. We are all in the same workgroup. (No domain). Internet access, DHCP, and DNS server is an SME server that thinks it is domain controller (although we are not using a domain). I need to run a script to back up my wife's machine (venus). In the past the script creates a share on a machine with lots of space (leda), and then executes the line. PSEXEC \\venus -u admin -p adminpassword -c -f d:\Progs\snapshot.exe C: \\leda\Venus\C-drive.SNA With the wife's old XP machine, this would run the sysinternals utility, copy shapshot,exe to her machine and run it, which would then back up her C: drive to the share on leda. I cannot get this to work with Windows 7, nor can I link through to the C$ share on her machine. This gives me a permissions error (system error 5). The admin account is a full admin account. And yes - I do know the password. The ordinary shares on her machine work fine! I guess I'm missing something that Microsoft have built into Windows 7 - but what? The machine is running Windows 7 business, with windows firewall, AVG anti virus, and all the crap-ware you get with a new PC removed. Thanks

  • Building an extension framework for a Rails app

    I'm starting research on what I'd need in order to build a user-level plugin system (like Wordpress plugins) for a Rails app, so I'd appreciate some general pointers/advice. By user-level plugin I mean a package a user can extract into a folder and have it show up on an admin interface, allowing them to add some extra configuration and then activate it. What is the best way to go about doing this? Is there any other opensource project that does this already? What does Rails itself already offer for programmer-level plugins that could be leveraged? Any Rails plugins that could help me with this? A plugin would have to be able to: run its own migrations (with this? it's undocumented) have access to my models (plugins already do) have entry points for adding content to views (can be done with content_for and yield) replace entire views or partials (how?) provide its own admin and user-facing views (how?) create its own routes (or maybe just announce its presence and let me create the routes for it, to avoid plugins stepping on each other's toes) Anything else I'm missing? Also, is there a way to limit which tables/actions the plugin has access to concerning migrations and models, and also limit their access to routes (maybe letting them include, but not remove routes)? P.S.: I'll try to keep this updated, compiling stuff I figure out and relevant answers so as to have a sort of guide for others.

    I've seen all the howtos about how you can set a ModelMultipleChoiceField to use a custom queryset and I've tried them and they work. However, they all use the same paradigm: the queryset is just a filtered list of the same objects. In my case, I'm trying to get the admin to draw a multiselect form that instead of using usernames as the text portion of the , I'd like to use the name field from my account class.     My questions seems like a common problem that when I have seen any questions on it is never really asked right or not answered. So Im going to try to get the question right, and maybe someone knows how to resolve the issue, or correct my understanding. The problem: When you have a many-to-many relation ship (related_name not through) and you are trying to use the admin interface you are required to input one of the rleationships even though it does not have to exsist for you to create the first entry. Meaning you have to assign a group to an event to create the group. Wow that sounds complicated. So I can see why the question is not getting answered. Lets try the non code explanation example... First and important versions: Django 1.1.1 Phython 2.6 So I have a model where I created a many-to-many realtionship and Im using the related_name Im creating an app that is an event organizer, for simplicty lets say events although they could be anytype). For this first post Im going to stay away from the code and just try to explain. A few keys: (explaining comment) ** - many-to-many So in the model we have 1) The Main Event (this is main model) 2) Groups (link to events and their can be many events for a group) a) Events** I have simplified this example a little becuase I recognize that what does it matter. Just create the event first... But there are specific varations where that will not work. What the many-to-many related_name does it created another table with the indecies of the two other tables. Nothing says that this extra table HAS to be populated. Becuase if I look in the database and work within myPHPadmin I can create a group with out registering an event, since the connection between the two is a seperate table the DB does not care. How do I make the admin interface this realize it? Ok I know thats a lot so I hope I have explained it clearly. Thank you anyone for your comments/thoughts/advice

  • dpkg unsatisfied dependencies, now apt-get wants to remove whole system

    firstly, I'm sorry for my terminal output in portuguese, but I guess it is still understandable. I am using Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 and I tried to update the GNOME Online Accounts packages by downloading the following .deb files from packages.ubuntu.com for the Ubuntu 14.10 version: libgoa-backend-1.0-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-backend-1.0-1_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-1.0-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-1.0-0b_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb gnome-online-accounts_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb gir1.2-goa-1.0_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb After downloading them in the same folder, I run the command sudo dpkg -i *.deb, but it didn't install the packages, instead it showed errors due to packages which them depend doesn't meet the required version (and Ubuntu have no way to install them since they are not in this version's repositories). So now every time I want to install anything through apt-get, Ubuntu tells me to run apt-get -f install to fix the errors. So, essentially this task has burned 1 hour per day Sprint Burn Down Chart – What’s not possible? The Sprint burn down chart is calculated from the System.AuthorizedDate and not the System.ChangedDate/System.CreatedDate. So, though you can change the System.ChangedDate and System.CreatedDate to historic dates you will not be able to synthesize the sprint burn down chart. Image 1 – By changing the Created Date and Changed Date to ‘18/Oct/2012’ you would have expected the burn down to have been impacted, but it won’t be, because the sprint burn down chart uses the value of field ‘System.AuthorizedDate’ to calculate the unfinished work points. The AsOf queries that are used to calculate the unfinished work points use the value of the field ‘System.AuthorizedDate’. Image 2 – Using the above code I burned down 1 hour effort per day over 5 days from the task work item, I would have expected the sprint burn down to show a constant burn down, instead the burn down shows the effort exhausted on the 24th itself. Simply because the burn down is calculated using the ‘System.AuthorizedDate’. Now you would ask… “Can I change the value of the field System.AuthorizedDate to a historic date” Unfortunately that’s not possible! You will run into the exception ValidationException –  “TF26194: The value for field ‘Authorized Date’ cannot be changed.” Conclusion - You need to be a member of the Project Collection Service account group in order to set the fields ‘System.ChangedDate’ and ‘System.CreatedDate’ to historic dates - You need to instantiate the WorkItemStore using the flag ByPassValidation - The System.ChangedDate needs to be set to a historic date at the time of work item creation. You cannot reset the ChangedDate to a date earlier than the existing ChangedDate and you cannot reset the ChangedDate to a date greater than the current date time. - The System.CreatedDate can only be reset after a work item has been created. You cannot set the CreatedDate at the time of work item creation. The CreatedDate cannot be greater than the current date. You can however reset the CreatedDate to a date earlier than the existing value. - You will not be able to synthesize the Sprint burn down chart by changing the value of System.ChangedDate and System.CreatedDate to historic dates, since the burn down chart uses AsOf queries to calculate the unfinished work points which internally uses the System.AuthorizedDate and NOT the System.ChangedDate & System.CreatedDate - System.AuthorizedDate cannot be set to a historic date using the TFS API Read other posts on using the TFS API here… Enjoy!

  • IE8 Developer Tools won't open

    Just installed IE8 on WinXP. Trying to use the Dev Tools but, clicking on the menu item or hitting F12 doesn't do anything. I can see the option in the tools menu, just can't use it. I've checked to make sure it wasn't opening minimized or off screen and I've checked the registry settings used to disable them. Those registry keys don't even exists. Suggestions? I was going to reinstall, but, thought I'd check here first.

  • "No more threads can be created in the system" in Network and Sharing Center

    A while back I noticed on one of our laboratory computers (Windows 7, very little extra software installed) that the network connection icon in the system tray would claim that it had no network connection, even though it did. This issue would go away after the computer was rebooted, but would surface again the next time I looked at the computer (a few days later). Upon opening the Network and Sharing Center I am shown an actual error message, but not one that seems to give me a lot of information about what the problem is. In the place of the usual information about network adapters and whether you are connected to the Internet it simply says: "No more threads can be created in the system." The Event Viewer shows hundreds of events from different services also with the same message. "Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x800700a4, No more threads can be created in the system."; "The WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service service failed to start due to the following error: A thread could not be created for the service."; "The IP Helper service terminated with the following error: No more threads can be created in the system." As far as I can tell, this message seems to mean that there is some sort of resource leak in Windows where something is creating a large number of threads and those threads are not being killed off? I've tried restarting WMI and several services related to networking, without avail. Can anyone provide more information on what "No more threads can be created in the system" might mean and what I might be able to do to fix the issue? Currently the only solution appears to be restarting.

Error: ODBC System DSN Warning You are logged on with non-Administrative privileges. System DSNs could not be created or modified. Failed Troubleshooting so far: Enabled local Administrator account logged in under this account. Navigated to C:\Windows\System32\ right clicked odbcad32.exe Run as Administrator Notes: I am an Administrator on this machine. The 32-bit version runs fine if I open C:\Windows\SysWoW64\odbcad32.exe However, I need the data source to be 64-bit. I am not experiencing this problem on any of my other 64-bit machines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Minimizing SQL transaction log file size on developer box running simple recovery model

    We have alot of SQL servers on development environment where we never take backup of the databases (TFS for code is enough). The (SharePoint) databases are all set to simple recovery model, but the log files, especially for the SharePoint configuration database is growing quite large and filling up our data drive on the SQL server. Since these log files are never used for anything, i would like advice on how to best minimize the size of these log files -or even disable them if possible. I'm not completely sure why the log files grow so large even on simple logging (checked for long running transactions (DBCC OPENTRAN) but found none). I guess the reason for the log files not being truncated is, that we dont take any backups, and hence Checkpoints arent reached. The autogrowth for log files are set to autogrow by 10% restricted to 2 gb, so i guess that is why Checkpoint (70%) arent reached here either. What would be the be best strategy to keep log files small (best case 0) without sacrificing performance (eg VLF fragmentation)?

The file contents should be: [server] user=martin basedir=/home/martin/mysql datadir=/home/martin/sql_data socket=/home/martin/socket port=3666 Go to the /home/martin/mysql directory and execute: ./scripts/mysql_install_db --defaults-file=~/my.cnf --user=martin --basedir=/home/martin/mysql --datadir=/home/martin/sql_data --socket=/home/martin/socket Your MySQL server is ready. Start it with this command: ./bin/mysqld_safe --defaults-file=~/my.cnf & When I try to change the password of MySQL it gives the error: Cannot connect to mysql server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' How can I change this path and see whether the mysql.sock is created or not?

    Sometimes when my computer running Windows 7 wakes up from sleep, it has to adjust the time. The problem is that if Windows Media Center is scheduled for recording during this time, it just skips it as if the computer was turned off. I never had this problem running Windows Vista on the same machine. Any ideas what could be causing this problem and how to solve it are welcome.

  • Accidently overwrote system.dbf - What now?

    I accidentally overwrote system.dbf in /usr/lib/oracle/xe/oradata/XE/system.dbf Well I did not actually do it accidentally, however I overwrote it because of other failures in the database. And when I try running the following: SQL> shutdown ORA-01109: database not open Database dismounted. ORACLE instance shut down. SQL> startup ORACLE instance started. Total System Global Area 289406976 bytes Fixed Size 1258488 bytes Variable Size 92277768 bytes Database Buffers 192937984 bytes Redo Buffers 2932736 bytes Database mounted. ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open Now I want to try to Recover the database because starting it in mounted or standard surely doesn't work. SQL> recover database using backup controlfile; ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to errors ORA-01110: data file 1: '/usr/lib/oracle/xe/oradata/XE/system.dbf' ORA-01122: database file 1 failed verification check ORA-01110: data file 1: '/usr/lib/oracle/xe/oradata/XE/system.dbf' ORA-01206: file is not part of this database - wrong database id How do I solve this? Is it even possible? My "real" problem was that I ran the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure and it overwrote my old configuration and probably removed passwords and such so my tables were gone, however I found the mytablespace.dbf so I hope that it is possible to recover? Please shed some light on this.
