  • Object Oriented vs Relational Databases

    - by Dan
    Objects oriented databases seem like a really cool idea to me, no need to worry about mapping your domain model to your database model, no messing around with sql or ORM tools. The way I understand it, relational DBs offer some advantages when there is massive amounts of data, and searching an indexing need to be done. To my mind 99% of websites are not massive, and enterprise issues never need to be thought about, so why arn't OO DBs more widely used?

  • Complicated programming and math tasks online. Any?

    - by Tom
    Maybe it is not very thematic question in here, but I guess it will be interesting not only to me. I hope. So, I just want to get some cool tasks to do using programming languages or just pen and sheet of paper. I guess it can lead to improving my ability to do better code (more optimal I mean.) Do you know any websites where I can find it? Thanks.

  • Subversion causes network problems

    - by richard
    I often use tortoisesvn to checkout or update a working copy on a development server. Whenever I do this, it seems to slow down the network and other users complain that browsing websites and accessing files on the dev server is slow. Is this a common bug in Subversion or has anyone else has come across similar problems?

  • .net compliant version control system that can be installed on a shared hosting (with no SSH/root Access)

    - by Farshid
    I searched a lot in SO and other websites for a version control system that can be installed on a shared windows hosting that lets me create repositories for putting my project files on it and supply me with version control facilities but I did not find one. I looked to see whether I can install git, Mercurial or TFS in a shared hosting and I did not found any answer. I want to know if you know any system that can be installed on a shared windows hosting and please tell your recommendations if you have had an experience before.

    Hello Everyone, I am currently designing a focused webcrawler. I have it tested with some websites until i encountered below anchor ("the <a href="..."): href="javascript: openDocument('DATA//PCP200803.pdf');" My html parsing routine results to javascript: openDocument('DATA//PCP200803.pdf'); Does anyone have any idea on how to download the referenced document? Thanks a lot.

  • Automatically start a windows service after install

    - by Chuck Savage
    Which of the two of these are preferable (and why) from the service installer, I've seen both mentioned on different websites (and here on stackoverflow Automatically start a Windows Service on install and How to automatically start your service after install?). // Auto Start the Service Once Installation is Finished. this.AfterInstall += (s, e) => new ServiceController("service").Start(); this.Committed += (s, e) => new ServiceController("service").Start();

  • Is the W3 standard a major factor when google decides SERP position?

    - by Camran
    I have a dynamic php website which index only has around 800 errors according to the w3 validator online. I have tried checking major websites like ebay, stackoverflow and others also, all with around 400 errors. So my first thought is, what good is that validator when it always displays errors? Secondly, will the errors affect my SERP ranking? ie, will me fixing these errors as good as I can increase my Google search position? Thanks
