  • Do best practices to avoid vendor lock-in exist?

    - by user1598390
Is there a set of community approved rules to avoid vendor lock-in ? I mean something one can show to a manager or other decision maker that is easy to understand and easily verifiable. Are there some universally accepted set of rules, checklist or conditions that help detect and prevent vendor lock-in in an objective, measurable way ? Have any of you warned a manager about the danger of vendor lock-in during the initial stages of a project ?

The intent is to bring greater awareness to our user community of some fantastic best practices documents that are available to anyone with a valid CSI.   These documents were originally created for our internal teams, but the content was so good and useful that we have made them available externally for our user community.  The first in our series is the Oracle GoldenGate database Schema Profile check script (Doc ID 1296168.1). “This script is intended to query the database by schema to identify current configuration and identify any unsupported data types or types that may need special considerations for Oracle GoldenGate in an Oracle environment. This is the Oracle database profile script.  Added check for deferred constraints. Deferred constraints may cause ADD TRANDATA to select the wrong column for logging. Use KEYCOLS for tables with deferred constraints.” Click here to view the document  Check back weekly for additional new postings.

  • Link tags in iframe widget

    - by john Smith
I have a rating community-site and I´m offering little iframe widgets with the average rating and some little other info. Does it make sense (for visibility, SEO) to add link tags to the head like: <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS 2.0" href="rssfeed" /> <link rel="index" title="main-profile" href="main-profile"> To get a logical association of the widget to relating pages? How would you do this?

  • What are the advantages of mainframes?

    - by Scott Weinstein
The downsides of Mainframes is well trodden ground; expensive, legacy, dwindling community, etc. I'm not particularly interested in the downsides, but I am curious if there are any benefits to mainframe hardware/software over the current Intel/AMD & Linux/Windows environment. I've been told that MFs are particularly good (and better than current servers) at heavy I/O loads. Is this still true?

  • Free Online Translation Tool Hosting for Java Open Source Project [closed]

    - by Yan Cheng CHEOK
I'm looking for a free online translation tool hosting. I wish to leverage help from open source community, to keep the language files for an open source project (Java) up to date. http://jstock.hg.sourceforge.net/hgweb/jstock/jstock/file/7871125356f7/src/org/yccheok/jstock/data Pootle seems good, as it supports Java language properties files as well. However, their official hosting site, is not opened for public registration. I was wondering, is there any free online translation tool hosting for Java open source project (Or similar) ?

  • Java EE 8 update

    - by delabassee
Planning for Java EE 8 is now well underway. As you know, a few weeks ago, we conducted a three part Java EE 8 Community Survey (you can find the final summary here). The data gathered have been very influential for the next steps. You can now expect over the coming weeks and months to see updates on the various specifications that compose the Java EE platform. Some Specification Leads are busy gathering additional feedback regarding what they should focus their efforts on (e.g. CDI 2 survey). Other Specification Leads have already publicly exposed what they think should be one of the focus for the evolution of the specification they lead.  For example, adding Server-Senet Events (SSE) support in JAX-RS is being discussed here and adding MVC support is being discussed here. Please remember that the fact we are now discussing any feature does not insure that it will be included in the proposal, nor in any particular update to Java EE. We can expect additional enhancements, changes and evolutions as we get closer to the finalisation of the different specifications... and there is still a long way to go with these specification proposals! Linda DeMichiel, Java EE Co-Specification Lead, has recently posted a draft proposal for the Java EE 8 Platform specification. Linda's goal is to recruit people and companies supporting this proposal before submitting it to the JCP.  This draft proposal is very interesting reading as it contains relevant information on the plans for Java EE 8 such as : The themes: Support for the latest web standards (eg. HTTP 2.0)  Continue to work on ease of development Improve the infrastructure for cloud support Alignment with Java SE 8 New JSRs to be added to the platform: J-Cache Java API for JSON Binding Java Configuration Plans for the Web Profile Plans on technologies to prune in Java EE 8, ... So if you haven't done it yet, I really encourage you to read the Java EE 8 draft proposal! Our goal for the Java EE 8 specification is for it to be finalized in the second half of 2016. It is important to note that we are in the early days of Java EE 8 and at this stage everything (themes, content, timing, etc.) is preliminary. Everything still needs to be discussed, challenged and agreed within the different Java Community Process (JCP) Experts Groups (EGs). Some EGs that still need to be formed! It could also means that the roadmap will have to be adjusted to follow the progress being made in the different EGs. This is also a good occasion to remind you that participation within those upcoming JCP Experts Groups is encouraged. Contributing in an EG is an effective lever to influence what Java EE 8 will become! Finally, as things get more concrete, we will share details on how to engage in the different Java EE 8 related Adopt-a-JSR initiatives, another way to contribute. You can also read other posts related to Java EE 8, here at The Aquarium blog. Just look for articles with the 'javaee8' tag.

  • What are the common pitfalls that would stop Authorised Key SSH access, and how do I find and correct for them?

    - by Ashimema
EDIT: This question was reworked to make it more useful to the community and less specific to me. Questions seem to come up reasonably often regarding ssh and problems with authorised keys access, but very few seem to have a clear answer anywhere; Server keeps asking for password after I've copied my SSH Public Key to authorized_keys ssh not accepting public key how do I use ssh with key access in 11.10 passwordless ssh not working So, In the communities opinion, what is the tried and tested method for getting to the bottom of such problems?

  • Third JCP.Next JSR Submitted

    - by heathervc
JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process was submitted for JSR Review on Thursday.  This JSR will modify the JSPA as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons, the JCP EC (acting as the Expert Group for this JSR), expects to spend a considerable amount of time working on it - at least a year, and probably more.  Read more from the Spec Lead, Patrick Curran, in his latest blog post for more details.
