  • How can I run a job when the server load is low?

    - by jberryman
I have a command that runs a disk snapshot (on EC2, freezing an XFS disk and running an EBS snapshot command), which is set to run on a regular schedule as a cron job. Ideally I would like to be able to have the command delayed for a period of time if the disk is being used heavily at the moment the task is scheduled to run. I'm afraid that using nice/ionice might not have the proper effect, as I would like the script to run with high priority while it is running (i.e. wait for a good time, then finish fast). Thanks.

  • Linux Software Raid runs checkarray on the First Sunday of the Month? Why?

    - by mgjk
It looks like Debian has a default to run checkarray on the first Sunday of the month. This causes massive performance problems and heavy disk usage for 12 hours on my 2TB mirror. Doing this "just in case" is bizzare to me. Discovering data out of sync between the two disks without quorum would be a failure anyway. This massive checking could only tell me that I have an unrecoverable drive failure and corrupt data. Which is nice, but not all that helpful. Is it necessary? Given I have no disk errors and no reason to believe my disks have failed, why is this check necessary? Should I take it out of my cron? /etc/cron.d# tail -1 /etc/cron.d/mdadm 57 0 * * 0 root [ -x /usr/share/mdadm/checkarray ] && [ $(date +\%d) -le 7 ] && /usr/share/mdadm/checkarray --cron --all --quiet Thanks for any insight,

  • How can I convert a large number of Word documents to HTML as fast as possible?

    - by metal gear solid
I have to convert 500 Microsoft Word 2003 files into HTML documents. What would be the shortest possible way? I'm not just talking about extension .doc to HTML. I want to convert word files's data into HTML tags. Word 2007 is installed in my system. Any suggestion which can help to accomplish this task quickly would be nice. If you will suggest any tool then that should not be commercial. Should be free or portable.

  • Volume display for laptop missing after driver update

    - by Cyclone
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520, and I just updated my audio drivers to be able to use Stereo Mix. It's a SigmaTel audio driver. Prior to the update, whenever I used the hardware buttons to update volume or mute/unmute speakers, it would always have a nice display like this one: But, for volume instead of screen brightness. The hardware buttons still work fortunately, but the volume display is gone. Is there a place I can configure this setting and re-enable it? The speaker icon in task tray was also disabled with the update, but I re-enabled that from the Control Panel. Is this simply gone with the driver update? Thanks for the help!

  • Can I use a cheap inverter for my laptop?

    - by Georg
I'm going to travel in a car this summer. It would be very nice if I could charge my laptop using the cigarette lighter. Because my computer is from Apple, there's no way to directly connect the two, therefore I need an inverter that provides 120V alternating current. There are many different models, ranging from very cheap to really expensive. The wave forms are: (from most expensive to cheapest) sine modified sine trapezoid square Can I use just any inverter or does it have to be a sine inverter? If so, what happens to my computer in case I use the wrong one. The laptop is a MacBook witch needs 60W.

  • CentOS-Like configuration of Vim on Ubuntu

    - by matejkramny
Whenever I use a CentOS System, there's always a pleasant configuration of vim which mainly does the following: Remembering position of closed files Colour mode (!!!) Bash has colours There's lots more, just not something i can recall on the spot. Then, i go to ubuntu and its all black and white, no nice vim config etc. I have to use Ubuntu, and I hate ubuntu because of this. I know I can all configure it by myself, so my question is: How can I configure the Ubuntu system to behave (aesthetically) like CentOS? PS to future self: I will be stoned to death for asking such a question.

  • Can you suggest some DIY PC specs for 1) Value, and 2) Future 'upgradability'?

    - by user17381
Hi, I'm considering building a new desktop PC from components. For the last 7/8 or so years I have almost exlusively used laptops, and so have fallen behind a bit with knowledge of various hardware technologies. Anyway, now I'm considering building a new desktop machine. Mainly for development work, but also would be nice to do a bit of gaming. The two main criteria are: I would like the first build to be relatively low cost. I would like to select components that will allow me to upgrade in the future without throwing too much away. Can anyone recommend a setup? Thanks

  • Recursively apply ACL permissions on Mac OS X (Server)?

    - by mralexgray
For years I've used the strong-armed-duo of these two suckers... sudo chmod +a "localadmin allow read,write,append,execute,\ delete,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,\ readsecurity, writesecurity, chown" sudo chmod +a "localadmin allow list,search,add_file,add_subdirectory,\ delete_child,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,\ writeextattr, readsecurity, writesecurity, chown" to, for what I figured was a recursive, and all-encompassing, whole-volume-go-ahead for each and every privilege available (for a user, localadmin). Nice when I, localadmin, want to "do something" without a lot of whining about permissions, etc. The beauty is, this method obviates the necessity to change ownership / group membership, or executable bit on anything. But is it recursive? I am beginning to think, it's not. If so, how do I do THAT? And how can one check something like this? Adding this single-user to the ACL doesn't show up in the Finder, so… Alright, cheers.

  • Render a 3D image as a 2D vector image

    - by Clinton Blackmore
Is there any software that will take a 3d model (in any format) and allow you to render it as a 2D vector image (preferable as either an .SVG or .PDF)? My intention is to render LEGO building instructions this way. While there are many tools that let you view them or generate nice, rasterized output, I'd really like to be able to generate vectorized output. Textures are not needed, and hidden line removal may not be needed. I could use a tool that works on any platform (although my preference is OS X, Linux, then Windows). Open source is preferred. If no one knows of a tool that does this, does anyone have a good recommendation of something to hack on and add a feature to output via Cairo?

  • A software to lock regions of a screen to prevent any windows from overlapping

    - by cybervaldez
I've just installed nexus dock (a similar application like rocketdock), after playing with the preferences i've come across a very curious option (under position & behavior) that says: Prevent maximized windows from overlapping the dock. With it enabled, any application I maximize(and i do mean any) won't overlap the dock, it's really great. So i'm thinking perhaps there's a software that does this kind of feature which is really ideal for keeping my workspace really organized. I really hate repositioning and resizing my windows everytime. Of course there's always the manual way of doing these but it's just too much of a bother when someone from the family uses the computer. Do you know any software that does this? even a software that can just save/remember window positions would also be nice too.

  • How do I hookup a dual video card Crossfire rig to a single monitor?

    - by Alexed
I just received a new Alienware box preinstalled with two nice shiny ATI 6950 graphics cards. My goal is to use both of them to give me really good resolution and frame rate on my single monitor. There's zero documentation with the Alienware box and nothing I can find online. Do I just plug the monitor into one of the cards, and expect the two cards to do magic internally? The ATI Crossfire website indicates a need for an "external crossfirex connection cable". Do I need to buy one of these? If so, what kind of cable is it? The AMD Catalyst Control Center shows the second card as "Linked" but when I go to the AMD Overdrive section, the second card is at zero temperature, and clock, suggesting it's not actually doing anything. What do I need to do to make use of both cards? Is it something that doesn't kick in until I do something graphically intensive?

  • Can I remove a RAR file's (known) password without recompressing the archive?

    - by Abluescarab
Long title. Anyway, I haven't been able to find an answer to this question. I know the password to the RAR file, I locked it myself, but now all I want to do is remove the password because it's too much of a pain in the butt to type it in every time. Is there a way to do this in WinRAR or an equivalent program? The only thing I knew to do was to extract it, then create a new RAR without the password. It's not a life-or-death issue, but it would be nice to know. Thanks for your time! EDIT: I just saw a bunch of related questions that appear to ask the same thing. The only solution I saw was using a DOS command to yadda yadda yadda. Here it is: How to remove password protection from compressed files Is there an easier way? Thanks again!

  • Reverse SCP over SSH connection

    - by pavpanchekha
I pretty often need some file from some server when I'm on my laptop. But if I don't know where that file is, I have to ssh into the server, look around, exit, and then scp server:file .. If I'm working with my desktop and my server, both of which have static IPs, I can just SCP the file in reverse (scp desktop:~ file), but I can't do that for my laptop. Is there any nice way to SCP a file backwards over an SSH connection? So that the computer I connect to with SSH sends a file backwards to the client?

  • Adding Windows 7 to Fedora 17 Grub Boot Loader

    - by Kyle
I'm trying to set up a dual-boot situation with my Windows 7 and Fedora 17 partitions and I left the install grub to /boot option on when I was installing Fedora. I would like to be able to add Windows 7 to the grub boot loader, but the advice I've seen online says to modify /boot/grub/grub.conf, but I don't have that file. $ ls /boot/grub/ splash.xpm.gz Has anyone done this? I'm thinking that I'll just need to re-install everything and use the Windows boot loader, but it would be nice to use grub instead.

  • Strange behavior from Firefox and Paypal Plugin

    - by Fake Name
Ok, so I use the paypal plugin with firefox, which is really nice because you can generate single use credit-cards on the fly. However, recently it's been acting strange. Normally, when you use the plugin, a drop-down window open in firefox. However, at some point (I'm not sure exactly when it happened, because I thought it wasn't working for a while) the drop-down window started appearing in thunderbird. As in, I click on the plugin button in firefox, and the plugin window immediately opens in Thunderbird. If Thunderbird is closed, the plugin does not open at all. I can use it normally this way (everything works except the receipt-saving function). but the whole affair seems a little odd to me. Is there any reason that could cause things to be redirected from one mozilla-application-window to another mozilla-application-window? Everything is up to date: Firefox 3.6.3 Thunderbird 3.0.5 Paypal Plugin 2.2.26.0

  • Alien: .rpm -> .deb | Compability / Built per system?

    - by MaddinXx
At the moment I'm playing a bit with alien (for OpenVZ packages on Debian) and was wondering myself about one question for which I was not able to find an answer anywhere. Therefor I thought it might be smart to ask here :) The question is... If I convert a .rpm to .deb on a system, how compatible is this .deb package? What do I mean? Will the .deb be working on other systems as well or is it per-system, e.g. that on every system the .deb package will be little different? That i386 and x86_64 are different is clear, so this doesn't need to be answered :) Examples that would be nice to know are for example: .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (compatible?) .deb built on Debian 6 64-bit - Debian 5 64-bit (compatible?) etc. Thanks anyone reading this / helping me! Regards, Michel

  • Logging the client IP with Nginx/Varnish/Apache

    - by jetboy
I have Nginx listening on port 443 as an SSL terminator, and proxying unencrypted traffic to Varnish on the same server. Varnish 3 is handling this traffic, and traffic coming in directly on port 80. All traffic is passed, unencrypted, to Apache instances on other servers in the cluster. The Apache instances use mod_rpaf to replace the logged client IP with the contents of the X-Forwarded-For header. My problem is that if the traffic is coming via Nginx, while the 'correct' client IP is getting logged in the VarnishNCSA logs, it looks as if Varnish is (understandably) replacing Nginx's X-Forwarded-For header with 127.0.0.1 downstream, and this is getting logged with Apache. Is there a nice simple way to stop Varnish rewriting X-Forwarded-For if it's already populated?

  • "Tail" a logstash server query

    - by phatmanace
Assuming I have a logstash server chocked full of logs being loaded regularly, is there a reasonably elegant way that I can tail the results of a continuously executing query on the logstash server and show this in a terminal window e.g some-special-logstash-command.sh | egrep -v "(searchword1|searchword2)" the idea being that the command pipes stuff out of logstash and to my grep query that filters and shows me the filtered output for. .. of course if there is a logstash command that can do the grep piece for me as well, then that works too :) motivation for doing this, is that assuming all of my events from my estate is being loaded into logstash, then would be nice to have a terminal window with a continuous tail of interesting events as they occur scrolling past the screen. -Ace

  • How can I get the current OU with a PowerShell login script?

    - by Frans
I am setting up a Terminal Server 2008 which will be used by different client organisations, each with multiple individual user accounts. I would like each client organisation to have a drive mapped to \server\clients\ Their OU name is also their client name, so I would like to be able to find their current OU and then use it for the mapping command. The OUs are hierarchicals, so it is the bottom-most OU name I need. Example OU: Dedicated Clients\AjaxCorp Should get a drive mapped to \\server1\shares\AjaxCorp Any suggestions on how I can get the OU? I am sure it must be easy, I just haven't figured it out... I did find information about how to do this with VB script, but as it is a whole new environment I thought it would be nice to use PowerShell instead.

  • Windows 7 Public Documents Folder - how to move it to drive d:

    - by Bazza Formez
Hi, I've just bought a new pc, and it is running Windows 7. I'm wanting to set up all of the documents folders such that they point to folders on a second drive partition (ie. disk D:) so that I have a nice separation of os from docs. I have managed to do this for each user on the machine (by opening up properties for documents folder and changing location). Hwoever, this procedure doesn't seem to work for the public documents folder. I cannot change the location for that one (even though I have administrator privileges). It is greyed out and cannot be changed. Any ideas ? Thanks!!

  • How to make changes in linux maintence mode

    - by Jack
I notice when Linux boots in maintenance mode the filesystem is read-only. Is there a way to change this, perhaps remounting as writable? An example of this being a problem is that I was unable to open vi because there were too many session files.... Not to mention it would be nice to actually fix problems.... What are you meant to be able to do if you can't make any changes to the filesystem? What kind of maintenance can be expected?

  • Convert SWF/FLA back to PDF [closed]

    - by mitjak
Possible Duplicate: How do I convert SWF into a PDF? I have a number of graphics and text only SWF and FLA files that I'd like to convert to PDF preserving the text and formatting. Printing to PDF from Flash Player seems to flatten everything into an image without preserving the text. I've got a large number of those files, so it would be quite nice to have a automatable/console utility to do the job. Appreciate any help or pointers. Thanks! EDIT: It seems like most SWF files were created with pdf2swf, so I'm hoping there is a similar tool for doing a reverse conversion.

  • Find keyword values from PDF [closed]

    - by JukkaA
I have a lot of PDF reports I'd need to index. They're mostly "text-based PDFs", not images. I know they all have account number in certain format, 123456AAAAA and some other keyword info like addresses, customer names etc. needed in indexing these files. Basically if the file is ab.pdf, I need to create ab.txt that contains: ACC=123456AAAA Customer=John Doe Date=20120808 What would be the best software/solution to generate indexing information for these? I know there's pdftotext, but piping it to different grep/awk commands is a hack... It would be nice to specify an area in PDF to search for the account number, and specify the format it is in.

  • Using a CF card as an IDE HDD

    - by dartacus
I have an old Sony laptop (Vaio TR1-MP) that I like. The HDD has died and since it's a hard-to-find 1.8" IDE hard drive I'm considering buying one of those little CF card adaptors and a 16gb CF card. The total cost of that is about £30 and replacement HDDs for this model are far pricier. Has anyone replaced their HDD with a CF card in this way, and, crucially, is the performance utterly horrible afterwards? ;-) I've seen a couple of threads which hint it's possible but the advice eventually given was just to buy a SSD, but I'm not even sure if its possible to get a 1.8" SSD with an IDE connector that'll fit my laptop. (I freely admit that the most sensible thing to do would be to bin it and just buy a cheap netbook which would be smaller, faster and lighter than the sony, but it does have a very nice widescreen display and dammit I just like it !) Thanks, G

  • Limited access to Amazon S3 buckets

    - by Tomas Markauskas
Is it possible to somehow limit the access to an Amazon S3 account. I don't really like the idea of distributing my secret access key to all of my applications, that want to access just a single bucket on my account. If someone gains access to one of the applications, I could loose all my data stored on S3. One way I was thinking to do it would be creating a second S3 account and give it access to just one bucket of the main account, but it's not really a great solution. Another nice thing for me would be to give the secondary account only write (but not modify/delete) and read access. That way I could upload backups or other files and be sure, that they won't get lost.
