Lots of people think that once their new website is live on the Internet that they can sit back, relax and watch the money roll in. The really hard work has not actually even begun though. Why?
Hello. I've just bought new Eee PC 1005 (with Atom N450, 250GB and 2GB memory) without any pre-installed system. Now I'd like to install windows and linux distribution on in. What should I choose ? I am a programmer and web designer, so I need Java IDE , Python interpreters, and Photoshop (on windows). Will Win 7 Pro 32bit work ?Or should I choose Windows XP ? And what about linux distro ? Ubuntu, Eeebuntu, Ubuntu netbook edition ?
btw is it true that linux's grub overrides mbr so that hardware system restore doesn't work ?
Installed Ubuntu over a Windows8 trial. After installation, Windows8 still tries to boot. Wiped disk clean with Acronis and reinstall Ubuntu. Windows8 still tries to start, but goes to blank screen. Ubuntu never tries to boot. Naturally live mode works fine. What do you think of wiping disk again, install Windows7 and try using GRUB approach or do you know how to remove Windows from the cleaned disk?

In my LAN network I have a server with Scientific Linux (RedHat or Fedora based distro), I've done yum install nginx but the welcome page is not accessible from other computers in my network.
When I do telnet open localhost 80 and then GET / HTTP/1.0 I get some html code from nginx, so it's running for sure. But when I want to connect remotly, doing telnet open 192.168.3.130 80 I get:
Trying 192.168.3.130...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: No route to host
So I assume that there is something wrong with my network settings, maybe iptables or something else?
Next step, I turned off iptables: service iptables stop and it helped, now I can connect remotely using telnet.
So I think, I need to fix my iptables rules. I did some googling and found this rule -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT but it still didn't allow me to connect remotely when iptables is up.
Can someone please help me setting a proper iptables configuration?
Project teams are faced with tight deadlines for enterprise application implementations or upgrades. Learn how organizations can reduce their time to deployment by using pre-built content for Oracle User Productivity Kit. When organizations use this content for baseline system transaction flows early in a project, they can then simply modify and update the content as the application evolves to create user acceptance test scripts, transaction recordings, job aids, classroom training, online training, and support materials post-go-live. The value of pre-built content dramatically reduces time to deployment and overall implementation costs.

I've recently ran into a very odd occurrence on one system I'm using. For no apparent reason, my user account was deleted, although the home directory is still there.
I have root access, so I can restore the account, but first, I want to know how this happened, and exactly when. Inspecting the root's .bash_history file and the "last" command gave nothing, and I'm (well, was) the only sudoer on the system.
How would I know when this deletion happened?
The distro is CentOS release 5.4 (Final), if that helps.
I'm looking for a very cheap machine to run a linux distro for security(anti-thief) software. I would like to be able to connect to the network and a couple of webcams. May be ip-webcams or usb-webcams.
The idea is having a machine with batteryes, laptop style, but there is no need to have a display/monitor attatched all the time.
I'm planning to spend no more than 200$, in case it also gets stolen.
Any advice on what to buy? (all modifications to this security plan are welcome)
Thanks.

I have a multiboot system that I would like to use Grub to manage. The version of Grub shipping with my Linux distro is Grub2, and it installs its equivalent of stage 1.5-2, core.img, into the remaining sectors on the first track after the MBR but before the first partition. Unfortunately, those sectors are needed by another program.
I have a separate primary /boot partition. If I could only keep boot.img as my MBR but have it look in the /boot partition for core.img rather than the embedded one in the sectors immediately following the MBR, everything would work fine. Is this possible with grub2?

I am pretty inexperienced with Linux... So please bare with me here.
I keep running into permission problems when working with truecrypt on Linux. Currently, I run truecrypt as root to mount my encrypted devices and containers. This all works fine, but I have to interact with the mounted volumes in the terminal as root, and I can't seem to use many of my applications on the files... Either because they can't be run as root or I don't know how to use them from the terminal. This seems really inconvenient to me.
How do people deal with this? Am I missing something, or is this just the way things have to be?
I am on Fedora 17 (KDE spin) now but I have this trouble with any distro I try.

It would be very useful for debugging mail sent in some code I'm working on. I'll be running the server locally - no outside world interaction required.

I'm new to Ubuntu and have been away from Linux for a while. I'm used to Windows and find this tedious on Linux but I want to give it a shot.
My tendency is to prefer GUI tools over command-line, and Ubuntu is a distro that seems to cater to usability. I note it is based somewhat on apt-get which I've heard good things about.
What's the best practise for installing apps on Ubuntu? Should I prefer to try my options in this order?

My Toshiba netbook fell down and hasn't booted again. When I start Windows 7 it immediately says:
Windows failed to start...
Status: 0xc0000225
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
After that, there are a few things to consider:
There's a Linux distro Linkat which is also installed in the computer. It starts normally without any problem and it doesn't seem to display any errors when it boots.
I restored all computer OSs with clonezilla and some images provided by the manufacturer, and it's done nothing.
I have already checked the basic components of the PC (RAM, Hard Disk, WLAN Card) are pluged in and working.
My impression is that's all about some broken part inside, though the Linux OS starts normally.
Does anyone know a way I can fix this or at least any software for identifying the problem at all?

At Red Gate we enjoy talking to our customers. Really! If you've read recent blog posts by members of some of our customer-facing teams, you'll have spotted the pleasure they take in their work. In case you missed those posts, here they are: From our Finance team: Finance: Friends, not foes! From our reception desk: The Front line of Communication However, we recognise that sometimes our customers would like to be able to solve their problems or answer their questions without talking to us - they're in a hurry, it's outside office hours . or perhaps they just prefer not to pick up the phone and call. Self-service customer care So we've begun a programme of work to enable more self-service; whether it's finding the answer to a "how do i.?" question or getting access to a record of what product licenses they own, we want to make it much easier for our customers to get hold of this information for themselves. If they want to. Phase 1: make it easier to find information We decided to start by tackling findability. We've got loads of useful information on our website, but it's sometimes difficult to find, so we've been working on improving our site search. Step 1 has been to replace the search engine, clean up the search UI, and make it consistent across the site. We're nearly there! The idea is that if we improve the site search it will be easier - and much more pleasant - for people to find the information they need. The new search will go live some time in April, and then we'll be gathering feedback, looking at web analytics (more about this in an earlier article), and working out what improvements we still need to make. We'd love to hear what you think, so do give your feedback or drop us a line. Or pick up the phone and call, if you like. What do you think? While I've got your attention, I'd love to hear what people think about self-service customer care. Do you like to call, email, live chat . or do you prefer to dig around and find out answers yourself? Who's getting it right: what self-service sites do you like? p.s. Watch this space for news of phase 2.
I want to dive into the open source world and start using a Linux distro while learning to program. I've looked over the options and it pretty much boils down to Fedora or CentOS. The reasoning behind it is I'm hoping to kill two birds with one stone...
Redhat seems to be "the choice" for servers, so I figure as I learn to program, I can also learn my way around Linux... or Redhat more specifically... and get that under my belt too.
I want to use Fedora, and be on the frontier of new software (since I'm not doing anything critical), but if it's completely different than Redhat I'd rather just use CentOS.
So is it? Or can I use one and know the other?
