Does anyone know of some good Mac software to sync a network attached storage device or a drobo to Amazon S3?
I'd love to mail them a storage device for the first dump and then do nightly syncs.
Win/7 Professional SQL Server 2008 R2 Express
Reporting Services Configuration Manager
When I launch it, shows correct Server Name, but report server instance is blank. When I press FIND I get:
"Unable to connect to the Report Server "
This is my development workstation, so no IIS installed. Seems to work fine on XP. SSMS works fine - no issues.
I tried uninstalling SQL Server completely, rebooting, reinstalling a fresh download. Same result. I've googled every article I can find - nothing.
Can anyone point me in the right direction in case you've come across this yourself? Thanks.
I just started with Amazon web services, and I have an EC2 instance. I downloaded the JAVA SDK and the Eclipse toolbox. I am able to run a sample program locally on my PC and connect to the Amazon databases, etc. My question is, what do I need to do to get this working on my EC2 instance? This may not even be specific to AWS. On Eclipse, I can just "Run as Application" and run any code. On the server side, what do I need to do? Should I ftp over my .java files? Should I export it to a jar and upload that? Do I need to install anything special to actually run it?
Is there something equivalent to WebDrive but free or open source ?
Update: I want on Windows if possible and be able to save a file on a virtual ftp drive from any software.
I know already I can type "ftp://[email protected]" into an Explorer address as suggested below but that doesn't transform it into a true virtual drive as i cannot save file from notepad for example.
I want to create a Domain User that runs the SQL Service Accounts.
The reason for this is that I have setup mirroring and MS recommends having the same user (a domain user account) running the services across all the the computers in the configuration to ensure mirroring will work properly. Right now in the test environment I just had them run under my user for simplicity. But now that I know what I am doing I would like to test the configuration more accurately.
I am also aware that it makes things much simpler if this user is an administrator.
My question is.
Should I just create a simple user SQLSERVICEUSER and make it an administrator? Seems a little insecure to me.
Anyone have a more elegant solution?

I've been trying to get my head around Amazon Web Services as a VPS provider. My understanding is a EC2 instance running Windows is basically a Windows VM, very similar to renting a VPS from a more traditional hosting provider.
I don't want to have complex backups, either to administer or to restore - if my restore involves installing SVN, MySQL, Jira, etc on a new box before I can even try to restore the backup then it's not great to me.
What I really want is a service which backs up my entire VM... if the PC running the VPS dies then the VM image is installed on a new PC and off we go again.
With Amazon being all about flexibility and elasticity, I wondered if they have this service? I can't figure it out from reading their docs.
Running a CITRIX presentation server farm, version 4.5.6 on Windows 2003 sp2.
In the CITRIX Access Management Console, I sometimes get a session that shows it's in a down state - but has none of the normal info associated with it (user name, applications, client name, idle time, etc...).
It does say which servers it's on, so I check out that server's terminal services manager. I can see the down session but cannot reset it. I get:
(Error 7024 - the requested operation
cannot be completed because the
terminal connection is currently busy
processing a connect, disconnect,
reset, or delete operation.)
So I go to the task manager and look up the processes running under that session id. I see it's one of my published apps, but when I try to end the process - it simply does nothing and the process remains.
Any way to get rid of these sessions without a server reboot?
Is there simple service to store strings under my key that can be used by bots?
Requirements:
Simple command line access, automatic posting allowed
No need to keep some session with the service alive
I choose the key (so pastebins fail)
No requirement for registration/authentication (for simplicity)
The string should be kept for about a month.
I want something like:
Store:
$ echo some_data_0x1299C0FF | store_my_string testtest2011
Retrieve:
$ retrive_my_string testtest2011
some_data_0x1299C0FF
Do you have ideas what should I use for it? I can only think of using IRC somehow (channel topics, /whowas, ...), but this is too complex for this simple task.
No security is needed: anyone can update my string. The task looks very simple, so I expect the solution to be similarly simple. Expecting something like single simple curl call.
hi, i came across a web service that let us select a group of selected free softwares and get them installed on our computer with single click, unattended.
i lost the link...can some one kindly point me to it.
thanks
We're taking over a team in a foreign country and the programming standards there aren't up to par with US standards. Folks there lack the formal training and basic understanding of computing concepts of databases, how computers work, what good software engineering practices are.
Short of sending these ppl to college again, are there good online courses available that we can enroll them into so that they can upgrade their skills?
I am specifically looking for online training courses, but recommendations for books are also welcome.

I'm planning to host a website where in the first phase I would target 30,000 users. It is in php and runs on Apache server.
I'm assuming 8,000 users can be online in worst case scenario and 1000 of them will be uploading photographs.
A photograph will be resized to around 1MB at client side and one HTTP request is uploading only one photograph.
My plan:
2 Small EC2 instances to run Apache httpd
2 Small EC2 instances to DB (Postgresql). I to write data and other its read replica.
EBS volumes for DBs
Last, Amazon S3 for uploaded photographs.
My question here
Is Small EC2 instance more than what I require. I mean should I go for micro
Is 8000 simultaneous user a right no. (to decide what EC2 instance to choose) for a new website
Or should I go for Small instance so to make it capable of spikes
I've removed the remote desktop host role from one of my Azue VM, so I can't RDP into it.
I have tried to recreate the endpoints and even the VM with no luck.
I can't either access remotely with Server Manager; getting this error: The client cannot connect to the destination specified in the request. Verify that the services on the destination is running"
I cannot connect remotely to the registry Make sure this computer is on the network, has remote administration enabled, and that both computers are running the remote registry service
PsPing tells me The remote computer refuses the network connection
Which workaround can I follow to solve this?
SkyDrive offers 25GB free space, but only offers a way too simple web upload one file at a time.
Does software exis, that makes it possible to moiunt it as a network drive?
As far as I'm concerned, Queen's song 'bohemian rhapsody' is one of the most popular songs all time. But for the purpose of this message you may replace this with another track.
At the same time I think 60% of the digital-music listeners have this track. Sometimes we have multiple copies: different versions of the track, different devices, unwanted duplicates in download folders, itunes folders etc..
Wouldn't it be much smarter to store these songs only once?
You can imagine various solutions for this.
How would you accomplish this?
Some criteria that may help you find an answer:
It must reduce disk space
It must remember which music belongs to you (DRM)
It must use network traffic efficiently
I recently installed Windows 8 on my main machine, and I'm have an issue with Carbonite. I can't restore any files from my previous OS, only files that where backed up from the current OS. I can download them from the web service, but I can't restore them with the client.
The error says "You don't have the necessary security permissions to restore this file."
(The file on top was backed up from the new install, while the one on bottom was from the old
install.)
I'm also having another issue, where Carbonite doesn't think it's running in admin mode. I think it's probably related to this error. When I right click to restore a file, I can't choose a location to restore to.
I contacted Carbonite, and they said it's a known issue that apparently happens when upgrade from XP to 7, but they wouldn't help me since I'm running a beta OS. Hopefully one of you fine folks will have an idea.
If you get the following error, while running the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard: Internet Information Services is not installed. You must have Internet Information Services installed in order to use the SharePoint Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard In order to resolve this, Open Server Manager, go to Roles and right click on Web Server And in the Window that comes up, Enable the option that says IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility (Installed)

I'm preparing to change my old LCD monitor for a new one. I have an old NEC 20WGX2 Pro based on an IPS panel. I'm looking for a screen that gives good color output but is very good at gaming at the same time (since it is its primary service). I tend to switch monitors between my different computers at home so it has to be multi purpose, hence IPS technology before.
Now, where can I read on newest monitor technologies so I can make an informed decision?
I need to find a best fit for myself and I have a very outdated knowledge at the moment. So any hints are greatly appreciated, be it info on technologies, web sources, links to other questions, etc.
I have seen a number of diagram software packages but most don't support real time collaboration. Google docs Drawing does the real-time collaboration, but is severely limited on features--focused on drawing rather than diagrams. I want something that supports connectors and such. Mind maps would be also be nice but would be a secondary requirement.
Our manager wants us to do applicaiton qos which is quite different from the well-known system qos. We have many services of three types, they have priorites, the manager wants to suspend low priority services requests when there are not enough bandwidth for high priority services. But if the high priority services requests decrease, the bandwidth for low priority services should increase and low priority service requests are allowed again.
There should be an algorithm involving priority and bandwidth. I don't know how to design the algorithm, is there any example on the internet? Somebody can give suggestion?
Thanks.
UPDATE
All these services are within a same process. We are setting the maximum bandwidth for the three types of services via ports of services via TC (TC is the linux qos tool whose name means traffic control).

We are using Amazon AWS for our web services but given the recent instabilities in their infrastructure, we are trying to figure out how to run our application across multiple regions for additional redundancy.
Ideally, we would run our entire app in a active-active configuration in multiple regions but our main concern is that we are using RDS, which I understand cannot replicate across regions.
One possible solution (though we have not tried or proven it would work) would be to do mysqldump or EBS snapshots every hour or so but this would mean that we would be forced to run in an active-passive configuration. Our data would be at most an hour behind. This carries its own issues around data synchronization when we failover and the master comes back up, so its not the best solution.
Are there any proven solutions for replicating RDS across regions?
