  • How to use Scrum and Visual Studio without Team System

    - by Donovan Woodside
I'm interested in possibly using Scrum with my development team (yes, I know it'll be a little painful to transition over to it). However, we don't have Team System and probably can't currently afford to get it immediately. What are some possible tools for getting a team up and running on Scrum in a .NET/Visual Studio environment without Team System?

  • Hidden Features of JavaScript?

    - by Allain Lalonde
What "Hidden Features" of JavaScript do you think every programmer should know? After having seen the excellent quality of the answers to the following questions I thought it was time to ask it for JavaScript. Hidden Features of C# Hidden Features of Java Hidden Features of ASP.NET Hidden Features of Python Hidden Features of HTML Hidden Features of PHP Even though JavaScript is arguably the most important Client Side language right now (just ask Google) it's surprising how little most web developers appreciate how powerful it really is.

  • Are there people using scheme out there?

    - by Nick
Hey, I have just started to study computer sciences at the university where they teach us programming in scheme. Since i have learned c++ for the last 6 years, scheme appears a little odd to me. But they tell me you can write any program you can write in C or Java with it. Is anybody really using this language?

  • Nominal Attributes in LibSVM

    - by Chris S
When creating a libsvm training file, how do you differentiate between a nominal attribute verses a numeric attribute? I'm trying to encode certain nominal attributes as integers, but I want to ensure libsvm doesn't misinterpret them as numeric values. Unfortunately, libsvm's site seems to have very little documentation. Pentaho's docs seem to imply libsvm makes this distinction, but I'm still not clear how it's made.

  • Clojure Protocols vs Scala Structural Types

    - by Vasil Remeniuk
After watching the interview with Rich Hickey on Protocols in Clojure 1.2, and knowing very little about Clojure, I have some questions on Clojure Protocols: Are they intended to do the same thing as Structural Types in Scala? What benefits do Protocols have over Structural Types (performance, flexibility, code clarity, etc.)? Are they implemented through reflections? Questions on interoperability with Scala: Can Protocols be used instead of Structural Types in Scala? Can they be extended (if 'extension' term can be applied to Protocols) in Scala?

  • Simple thread-safe non-blocking file logger class in c#

    - by Jason Renlan
I have a web application, that will log some information to a file. I am looking for a simple thread-safe non-blocking file logger class in c#. I have little experience with threading. I known there are great logging components out there like log4Net, Enterprise Library Logging Block, ELMAH, but I do not want an external dependence for my application. I was thinking about using this queue implementation http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cpp/lockfreeq.aspx

  • Sphinx, reStructuredText show\hide code snippets

    - by Adam Matan
Hi, I've been documenting a software package using Sphinx and reStructuredText. Within my documents, there are some long code snippets. I want to be able to have them hidden as default, with a little "Show\Hide" button that would expand them (Example). Is there a standard way to do that? If not, I think I will suggest this feature to the developers. Thanks, Adam

  • Tools to make CSS sprites?

    - by Simon_Weaver
Are there any good tools to make css sprites? IDEALLY I'd want to give it a directory of images and an existing .css file that refers to those images and have it create a big image optimized with all the little images AND change my .css file to refer to those images. At the least I'd want it to take a directory of images and generate a big sprite and the .css necessary to use each as a background. Are there any good photoshop plugins or fully blown apps to do this?

  • Reed-Solomon encoder for embedded application (memory-efficient)

    - by bjarkef
Hi I am looking for a very memory-efficient (like max. 500 bytes of memory for lookup tables etc.) implementation of a Reed-Solomon encoder for use in an embedded application? I am interested in coding blocks of 10 bytes with 5 bytes of parity. Speed is of little importance. Do you know any freely available implementations that I can use for this purpose? Thanks in advance.

  • TSQL syntax to restore .bak to new db

    - by justSteve
I need to automate the creation of a duplicate db from the .bak of my production db. I've done the operation plenty of times via the GUI but when executing from the commandline I'm a little confused by the various switches, in particular, the filenames and being sure ownership is correctly replicated. Just looking for the TSQL syntax for RESTORE that accomplishes that. thx

  • Clarification on recaptcha

    - by luckytaxi
Um so I was in for a little bit of a surprise tonight. I spent a good 20 mins trying to figure out why I was able to submit a form knowing that what I entered into the recaptcha field was invalid. Is it true that you don't need to input the exact words it displays? If it shows me two words and I misspelled one of the words, I still pass validation? Same goes if "hello world" and I input "hell man" it still works.

  • Fluent NHibernate caching with automapping

    - by md1337
I'm trying to understand how to configure Fluent NHibernate to enable 2nd-level caching for queries, entities, etc... There is very little information online on how to do that. I see it can be achieved by manually mapping the entities but I don't want that. I want to be able to cache all entities and not address the classes individually. How can I do that? Thanks.

  • DataAnnotations and Resources don't play nicely

    - by devlife
I'm using dataannotations in an MVC2 app and am a little discouraged when trying to use RESX file resources for error messages. I've tried the following but keep getting the exception "An attribute [Required(ErrorMessage = Resources.ErrorMessages.Required)] [Required(ErrorMessageResourceName = Resources.ErrorMessages.Required, ErrorMessageResourceType = typof(Resources.ErrorMessages)] I keep getting that error message unless I replace ErrorMessageResourceName with "Required" instead of Resources.ErrorMessages.Required. Can anyone tell me if I'm doing this right?

  • Casting functions -- Is it a code smell?

    - by Earlz
I recently began to start using functions to make casting easier on my fingers for one instance I had something like this ((Dictionary<string, string>)value).Add(foo); and converted it to a tiny little helper function so I can do this ToDictionary(value).Add(foo); Is this a code smell? (also I've marked this language agnostic even though my example is C#)

    - by Andrew Welch
Hi, the simple little module titled 'on the web' for drupal shows social network links. It links to some images on the directory. on my localhost install they are showing but in the remote install the img tags aren't even appearing. I looked in the module's files and the path isn't hard-coded or anything so it's not to do with that. any ideas? the module is here: http://drupalmodules.com/module/on-the-web cheers andy
