  • Caching in mmap

    - by myahya
    I am using mmap call to read from a very big file using simple pointer arithmetic in C++. The problem is that when I read small chunks of data (in the order of KBs) multiple times, each read take the same amount of time as the previous one. How can I know if the disk is being accessed to fulfill my request or whether the request is being fulfilled from main memory (page cache) in calls after the first one.

  • Producer / Consumer - I/O Disk

    - by Pedro Magalhaes
    Hi, I have a compressed file in the disk, that a partitioned in blocks. I read a block from disk decompress it to memory and the read the data. It is possible to create a producer/consumer, one thread that recovers compacted blocks from disk and put in a queue and another thread that decompress and read the data? Will the performance be better? Thanks!

  • How to MakeTable ReadOnly including contents like images

    - by GustlyWind
    I have a table which has two text boxes and a image beside it to click and open a popup. In read-only mode based on condition I am able to make text boxes read-only but images are not becoming read-only.One solution I had is the anchor tag associated with image calls for JavaScript where I can check for a dummy click when it is in read-only mode. The problem here is the function is common and effects everywhere. So is there a way to make the entire table read-only so that no extra workaround needs to done. Edited for code <table> <tr> <td class="lightbg" colspan='4'>&nbsp; Expires:<input type="TEXT" value="" id="element1" name="expireDate" size="10" maxlength="20" class="" onChange="javascript:validateDateEntry('element1',true);;"> Period:<input type="TEXT" value="" id="element2" name="refershDate" size="10" maxlength="20" class="" onChange="javascript:validateDateEntry('element2',true);;"> &nbsp; <a href="javascript:doCalendar('element1');"> <img src="/PWM/images/images_2006/calendarbtn.gif" border="0" alt="Click to select date from calendar" align="absmiddle"> </a> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan='4'><b>*</b>Times are in the WFM Server's Time Zone.</td></tr> </table> Thanks

  • How to program critical section for reader-writer systems?

    - by Srinivas Nayak
    Hi, Lets say, I have a reader-writer system where reader and writer are concurrently running. 'a' and 'b' are two shared variables, which are related to each other, so modification to them needs to be an atomic operation. A reader-writer system can be of the following types: rr ww r-w r-ww rr-w rr-ww where [ r : single reader rr: multiple reader w : single writer ww: multiple writer ] Now, We can have a read method for a reader and a write method for a writer as follows. I have written them system type wise. rr read_method { read a; read b; } ww write_method { lock(m); write a; write b; unlock(m); } r-w r-ww rr-w rr-ww read_method { lock(m); read a; read b; unlock(m); } write_method { lock(m); write a; write b; unlock(m); } For multiple reader system, shared variable access doesn't need to be atomic. For multiple writer system, shared variable access need to be atomic, so locked with 'm'. But, for system types 3 to 6, is my read_method and write_method correct? How can I improve? Sincerely, Srinivas Nayak

  • Why do i get E_ACCESSDENIED when reading public shortcuts through Shell32?

    - by corvuscorax
    I'm trying to read the targets of all desktop shortcuts in a C# 4 application. The shortcuts on a windows desktop can come from more that one location, depending on whether the shortcut is created for all users or just the current user. In this specific case I'm trying to read a shortcut from the public desktop, e.g. from C:\Users\Public\Desktop\shortcut.lnk. The code is like this (path is a string contaning the path to the lnk file): var shell = new Shell32.ShellClass(); var folder = shell.NameSpace(Path.GetDirectoryName(path)); var folderItem = folder.ParseName(Path.GetFileName(path)); if (folderItem != null) { var link = (Shell32.ShellLinkObject)folderItem.GetLink; The last line throws an System.UnauthorizedAccessException, indicating that it's not allowed to read the shortcut file's contents. I have tried on shortcut files on the user's private desktop (c:\Users\username\Desktop) and that works fine. So, my questions are: (1) why is my application not allowed to /read/ the shortcut from code, when I can clearly read the contents as a user? (2) is there a way to get around this? Maybe using a special manifest file for the application? And, by the way, my OS is Windows 7, 64-bit. be well -h-

  • Writing file from HttpWebRequest periodically vs. after download finishes?

    - by WB3000
    Right now I am using this code to download files (with a Range header). Most of the files are large, and it is running 99% of CPU currently as the file downloads. Is there any way that the file can be written periodically so that it does not remain in RAM constantly? private byte[] GetWebPageContent(string url, long start, long finish) { byte[] result = new byte[finish]; HttpWebRequest request; request = WebRequest.Create(url) as HttpWebRequest; //request.Headers.Add("Range", "bytes=" + start + "-" + finish); request.AddRange((int)start, (int)finish); using (WebResponse response = request.GetResponse()) { return ReadFully(response.GetResponseStream()); } } public static byte[] ReadFully(Stream stream) { byte[] buffer = new byte[32768]; using (MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream()) { while (true) { int read = stream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length); if (read <= 0) return ms.ToArray(); ms.Write(buffer, 0, read); } } }

  • What are the permissions I need?

    - by Eric
    My folder at: /usr/local/www/.ext_env_vars has a bunch of files in it that my app needs to read. The user is 'webapp' So, I changed the perms like so: chmod -R 400 .ext_env_vars chown -R webapp.webapp .ext_env_vars The application can't read these. However, when I chmod 777, they are read by the app. So, it isn't that I have a path problem. Seems to be permissions only. So, what would I have to do to the permissions to make webapp be able to read those files in the .ext_env_vars folder? Thanks Eric

  • How large a role does subjectiveness play in programming?

    - by Bob
    I often read about the importance of readability and maintainability. Or, I read very strong opinions about which syntax features are bad or good. Or discussions about the values of certain paradigms, like OOP. Aside from that, this same question floats about in my mind whenever I read debates on SO or Meta about subjective questions. Or read questions about best practices and sometimes find myself or others disagreeing. What role does subjectiveness play within the programming realm? Sometimes I think it plays a large role. Software developers are engineers in a way, but also people. A large part of programming is dealing with code that's human readable. This is very different from Math or Physics or other disciplines with very exact and structured rules. Here the exact structure and rules are largely up in the air, changeable on a whim, and hence the amount of languages in existence. And one person may find one language very readable, and another person may find their own language the most comforting. The same with practices. One person may not like certain accepted practices. I myself find splitting classes into different files very unreadable, for instance. But, I can't say rules haven't helped in general. Certain practices have and do make life easier. And new languages have given rise to syntax and structure that make life easier. There's certainly been a progression towards code that is easier to read and maintain even given a largely diverse group of people. So maybe these things aren't as subjective as I thought. It reminds me, in a way, of UI design. Certainly it's subjective, but then there's an entire discipline involved in crafting good UI and it tends to work. Is there something non-subjective about the ideas behind maintainability, readability, and other best practices? Is there something tangible to grasp when one develops a new language or thinks of new practices?

  • Why is creating a ring buffer shared by different processes so hard (in C++), what I am doing wrong?

    - by recipriversexclusion
    I am being especially dense about this but it seems I'm missing an important, basic point or something, since what I want to do should be common: I need to create a fixed-size ring buffer object from a manager process (Process M). This object has write() and read() methods to write/read from the buffer. The read/write methods will be called by independent processes (Process R and W) I have implemented the buffer, SharedBuffer<T&>, it allocates buffer slots in SHM using boost::interprocess and works perfectly within a single process. I have read the answers to this question and that one on SO, as well as asked my own, but I'm still in the dark about how to have different processes access methods from a common object. The Boost doc has an example of creating a vector in SHM, which is very similar to what I want, but I want to instantiate my own class. My current options are: Use placement new, as suggested by Charles B. to my question; however, he cautions that it's not a good idea to put non-POD objects in SHM. But my class needs the read/write methods, how can I handle those? Add an allocator to my class definition, e.g. have SharedBuffer<T&, Alloc> and proceed similarly to the vector example given in boost. This sounds really complicated. Change SharedBuffer to a POD class, i.e. get rid of all the methods. But then how to synchronize reading and writing between processes? What am I missing? Fixed-length ring buffers are very common, so either this problem has a solution or else I'm doing something wrong.

  • C# TcpClient, getting back the entire response from a telnet device

    - by Dan Bailiff
    I'm writing a configuration tool for a device that can communicate via telnet. The tool sends a command via TcpClient.GetStream().Write(...), and then checks for the device response via TcpClient.GetStream().ReadByte(). This works fine in unit tests or when I'm stepping through code slowly. If I run the config tool such that it performs multiple commands consecutively, then the behavior of the read is inconsistent. By inconsistent I mean sometimes the data is missing, incomplete or partially garbled. So even though the device performed the operation and responded, my code to check for the response was unreliable. I "fixed" this problem by adding a Thread.Sleep to make sure the read method waits long enough for the device to complete its job and send back the whole response (in this case 1.5 seconds was a safe amount). I feel like this is wrong, blocking everything for a fixed time, and I wonder if there is a better way to get the read method to wait only long enough to get the whole response from the device. private string Read() { if (!tcpClient.Connected) throw (new Exception("Read() failed: Telnet connection not available.")); StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); do { ParseTelnet(ref sb); System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1500); } while (tcpClient.Available > 0); return sb.ToString(); } private void ParseTelnet(ref StringBuilder sb) { while (tcpClient.Available > 0) { int input = tcpClient.GetStream().ReadByte(); switch (input) { // parse the input // ... do other things in special cases default: sb.Append((char)input); break; } } }

  • Excel 2010 Access to path is denied temp

    - by Chris Anderson
    I am using excel data reader to read data from an excel file. FileStream stream = File.Open(filePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read); //1. Reading from a binary Excel file ('97-2003 format; *.xls) IExcelDataReader excelReader = ExcelReaderFactory.CreateBinaryReader(stream); //2. Reading from a OpenXml Excel file (2007 format; *.xlsx) IExcelDataReader excelReader = ExcelReaderFactory.CreateOpenXmlReader(stream); http://exceldatareader.codeplex.com/ This reads excel 1997-2003 format and excel 2007 format on my local machine and when we move it to our test server. However, when moved to production, it works for excel 97-2003 files, but when I try to read 2007 files I receive the following error: Access to the path 'C:\Documents and Settings\PORTALS03\ASPNET\LOCALS~1\Temp\TMP_Z129388041687919815' is denied. How is it possible that the 97-2003 excel file can be read but the 2007 files throw access is denied?

  • Java multiple connections downloading file

    - by weulerjunior
    Hello friends, I was wanting to add multiple connections in the code below to be able to download files faster. Could someone help me? Thanks in advance. public void run() { RandomAccessFile file = null; InputStream stream = null; try { // Open connection to URL. HttpURLConnection connection = (HttpURLConnection) url.openConnection(); // Specify what portion of file to download. connection.setRequestProperty("Range", "bytes=" + downloaded + "-"); // Connect to server. connection.connect(); // Make sure response code is in the 200 range. if (connection.getResponseCode() / 100 != 2) { error(); } // Check for valid content length. int contentLength = connection.getContentLength(); if (contentLength < 1) { error(); } /* Set the size for this download if it hasn't been already set. */ if (size == -1) { size = contentLength; stateChanged(); } // Open file and seek to the end of it. file = new RandomAccessFile("C:\\"+getFileName(url), "rw"); file.seek(downloaded); stream = connection.getInputStream(); while (status == DOWNLOADING) { /* Size buffer according to how much of the file is left to download. */ byte buffer[]; if (size - downloaded > MAX_BUFFER_SIZE) { buffer = new byte[MAX_BUFFER_SIZE]; } else { buffer = new byte[size - downloaded]; } // Read from server into buffer. int read = stream.read(buffer); if (read == -1) { break; } // Write buffer to file. file.write(buffer, 0, read); downloaded += read; stateChanged(); } /* Change status to complete if this point was reached because downloading has finished. */ if (status == DOWNLOADING) { status = COMPLETE; stateChanged(); } } catch (Exception e) { error(); } finally { // Close file. if (file != null) { try { file.close(); } catch (Exception e) { } } // Close connection to server. if (stream != null) { try { stream.close(); } catch (Exception e) { } } } }

  • Bash: Check if file was modified since used in script

    - by Thomas Münz
    I need to check in a script if a file was modified since I read it (another application can modify it in between). According to bash manual there is a "-N" test which should report if a file was modified since last read. I tried it in a small script but it seems like it doesn't work. #!/bin/bash file="test.txt" echo "test" > $file cat $file; if [ -N $file ]; then echo "modified since read"; else echo "not modified since read"; fi I also tried an alternative way by touching another file and using if [ "file1" -nt "file2 ]; but this works only on a seconds accuracy which may under rare conditions not be sufficient. Is there any other bash-inbuilt solution for this problem or I do really need to use diff or md5sum?

  • bash: flushing stdin (standard input)

    - by rahul
    I have a bash script that gets some input as stdin. After processing, I copy a file using "-i" (interactive). However, this never gets executed since (I guess) standard input has not been flushed. To simplify with an example: #!/bin/bash while read line do echo $line done # the next line does not execute read -p "y/n" x echo "got $x" Place this in t.sh, and execute with: ls | ./t.sh The read is not executed. I need to flush stdin before the read. How could it do this?

  • Perl not closing TCP sockets if clients are no longer connected?

    - by LM
    The purpose of the application is to listen for a specific UDP multicast and then to forward the data to any TCP clients connected to the server. The code works fine, but I have a problem with the sockets not closing after the TCP clients disconnects. A socketsniffer utility shows the the sockets remain open and all the UDP data continues to be forwarded to the clients. The problem I believe is with the "if ($write-connected())" block as it always return true, even if the TCP client is no longer connected. I use standard Windows Telnet to connect to the server and to see the data. When I close telnet, the TCP socket is suppose to close on the server. Any reason why connected() show the connections as active even if they are not? Also, what alternative should I use then? Code: #!/usr/bin/perl use IO::Socket::Multicast; use IO::Socket; use IO::Select; my $tcp_port = "4550"; my $tcp_socket = IO::Socket::INET->new( Listen => SOMAXCONN, LocalAddr => '0.0.0.0', LocalPort => $tcp_port, Proto => 'tcp', ReuseAddr => 1, ); use Socket qw(IPPROTO_TCP TCP_NODELAY); setsockopt( $tcp_socket, IPPROTO_TCP, TCP_NODELAY, 1); use constant GROUP => '239.2.0.81'; use constant PORT => '6550'; my $udp_socket= IO::Socket::Multicast->new(Proto=>'udp',LocalPort=>PORT); $udp_socket->mcast_add(GROUP) || die "Couldn't set group: $!\n"; my $read_select = IO::Select->new(); my $write_select = IO::Select->new(); $read_select->add($tcp_socket); $read_select->add($udp_socket); ## Loop forever, reading data from the UDP socket and writing it to the ## TCP socket(s). while (1) { ## No timeout specified (see docs for IO::Select). This will block until a TCP ## client connects or we have data. my @read = $read_select->can_read(); foreach my $read (@read) { if ($read == $tcp_socket) { ## Handle connect from TCP client. Note that UDP connections are ## stateless (no accept necessary)... my $new_tcp = $read->accept(); $write_select->add($new_tcp); } elsif ($read == $udp_socket) { ## Handle data received from UDP socket... my $recv_buffer; $udp_socket->recv($recv_buffer, 1024, undef); ## Write the data read from UDP out to the TCP client(s). Again, no ## timeout. This will block until a TCP socket is writable. my @write = $write_select->can_write(); foreach my $write (@write) { ## Make sure the socket is still connected before writing. if ($write->connected()) { $write->send($recv_buffer); } else { $write_select->remove($write); close $write; } } } } }

  • Java: Clearing up the confusion on what causes a connection reset

    - by Zombies
    There seems to be some confusion as well contradicting statements on various SO answers: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/585599/whats-causing-my-java-net-socketexception-connection-reset . You can see here that the accepted answer states that the connection was closed by other side. But this is not true, closing a connection doesn't cause a connection reset. It is cauesed by "an underlying TCP/IP error." What I want to know is if a SocketException: Connection reset means really besides "unerlying TCP/IP Error." What really causes this? As I doubt it has anything to do with the connection being closed (since closing a connection isn't an exception worthy flag, and reading from a closed connection is, but that isn't an "underlying TCP/IP error." My hypothesis is this Connection reset is caused from a server's failure to acknowledge an ACK packet (either wholly or just improperly as per TCP/IP). And that a SocketTimeoutException is generated only when no data is generated to be read (since this is thrown during a read after a certain duration, and read is waiting for data, but is not concerned with ACK packets). In other words, read() throws SocketTimeoutException if it didn't read any bytes of actual data (DATA LAYER) in its allotted time.

I'm thinking it has to do with my content type. Or maybe the way I'm uploading?

  • C++ iostream not setting eof bit even if gcount returns 0

    - by raph.amiard
    Hi I'm developping an application under windows, and i'm using fstreams to read and write to the file. I'm writing with fstream opened like this : fs.open(this->filename.c_str(), std::ios::in|std::ios::out|std::ios::binary); and writing with this command fs.write(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&e.element), sizeof(T)); closing the file after each write with fs.close() Reading with ifstream opened like this : is.open(filename, std::ios::in); and reading with this command : is.read(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&e.element), sizeof(T)); The write is going fine. However, i read in a loop this way : while(!is.eof()) { is.read(reinterpret_cast<char*>(&e.element), sizeof(T)); } and the program keeps reading, even though the end of file should be reached. istellg pos is 0, and gcount is equal to 0 too, but the fail bit and eof bit are both ok. I'm running crazy over this, need some help ...

    Guys, I''m looking to get this correct and i'm getting a bit fustrated with this. What I want to do is get hours and days and weeks correct. Example: if this post is < 60min old then have it read: Posted Less then 1 minute ago if this post is < 120min old then have it read: Posted 1 hour ago if this post is 120min old then have it read: Posted 1 hours ago if this post is < 1440min old then have it read: Posted 1 day ago if this post is 1440min old then have it read: Posted 2 days ago Is that right?? This is what I have so far: if (lapsedTime < 60) { return '< 1 mimute'; } else if (lapsedTime < (60*60)) { return Math.round(lapsedTime / 60) + 'minutes'; } else if (lapsedTime < (12*60*60)) { return Math.round(lapsedTime / 2400) + 'hr'; } else if (lapsedTime < (24*60*60)) { return Math.round(lapsedTime / 3600) + 'hrs'; } else if (lapsedTime < (7*24*60*60)) { return Math.round(lapsedTime / 86400) + 'days'; } else { return Math.round(lapsedTime / 604800) + 'weeks'; }
