  • Alpha-Beta cutoff

    - by Becky
I understand the basics of this search, however the beta cut-off part is confusing me, when beta <= value of alphabeta I can either return beta, break, or continue the loop. return beta doesn't seem to work properly at all, it returns the wrong players move for a different state of the board (further into the search tree) break seems to work correctly, it is very fast but it seems a bit TOO fast continue is a lot slower than break but it seems more correct...I'm guessing this is the right way but pseudocode on google all use 'break' but because this is pseudocode I'm not sure what they mean by 'break'

  • Online validators, syntax checkers, testing tools

    - by Max Gontar
I often need to verify some simple code before posting, and it's great if I have installed IDE, but what if not? It would be nice to have online free tools for SQL, VB.NET, C# code validation, or maybe even testing. EDIT What I actually mean are online live web tools, like JSLint for javascript. Have you seen any?

  • std::string x(x);

    - by FredOverflow
std::string x(x); This crashes very badly on my compiler. Does this mean I should test for this != &that in my own copy constructors, or can I assume that no client will ever be so stupid?

  • comprehensive list of unsafe functions in C

    - by Dervin Thunk
Hello. I've been looking online unsuccessfully for a comprehensive list of unsafe (dangerous) functions in C (see here for a few). When I say "dangerous" I mean functions like gets or strcopy, but I was wondering if someone has actually compiled a comprehensive list. Thank you. PD: Neil Butterworth, you should abstain from answering my posts. You're seldom helpful.

  • iPad - supports Garbage Collector?

    - by krasnyk
I know you can't use GC in iPhone applications cause iPhone does not have enough resources to enable that - it would kill the performence. What about iPad. I know they run iPhone OS too, does that mean that CG can't be enabled on the iPad as well?

  • What are the Ruby equivalent of Python itertools, esp. combinations/permutations/groupby?

    - by Amadeus
Python's itertools module provides a lots of goodies with respect to processing an iterable/iterator by use of generators. For example, permutations(range(3)) --> 012 021 102 120 201 210 combinations('ABCD', 2) --> AB AC AD BC BD CD [list(g) for k, g in groupby('AAAABBBCCD')] --> AAAA BBB CC D What are the equivalent in Ruby? By equivalent, I mean fast and memory efficient (Python's itertools module is written in C).

  • Grails + Spring Security one field login

    - by Miguel
Hi all Is it possible, using spring security plugin 0.5.3 with Grails 1.2.1, to authenticate a user using only one field? I mean, for example, making j_username and j_password fields in the authentication form equal previous to the authentication. I read it was possible to define j_username field in Config.groovy with acegi plugin, in older versions of the plugin. Now it uses SecurityConfig.groovy but the possibility of defining the field exists no more. Any ideas?? Thanks a lot, Miguel

  • Subclassing UIButton.

    - by Joshua
I would like to subclass UIButton so I can give it a fill image, left side image and right side image which I can't do in IB. All I can do in IB is give it a full background image which would mean the background would get stretched if the text was larger than the image. How would I do this? as unlike NSButton, there is no UIButtonCell class.

  • XCode -> Build starting with a specific class

    - by ML
When I build with XCode (I am porting a large project with tons of errors at this point), is there a way to have it start with the CPP file that contains my main class (I obviously know this file) so I can correct errors there first? I mean we have about 400,000 errors moving from CW to XCode.

  • Quote POSIX shell special characters in Python output

    - by ??O?????
There are times that I automagically create small shell scripts from Python, and I want to make sure that the filename arguments do not contain non-escaped special characters. I've rolled my own solution, that I will provide as an answer, but I am almost certain I've seen such a function lost somewhere in the standard library. By “lost” I mean I didn't find it in an obvious module like shlex, cmd or subprocess. Do you know of such a function in the stdlib?

  • How to handle a memory leak in an external DLL

    - by Dugan
I have an external (.Net) dll that I have to use for an application. Unfortunately that dll has several known memory leaks. We are working on getting the authors of the dll to fix the memory leaks, but in the mean time I was wondering what is the best way to use the dll without having to deal with the memory leaks?

  • CollectionViewSource & Selective Column Display

    - by Berryl
By selective column display i mean the following: a control shows a listing of widgets (WidgetVm.DisplayName), with the default display name being in English (WidgetVm.EnglishName), but with the option to show the widget in French (WidgetVm.FrenchName). There also sorting and filtering available, which is why CollectionViewSource seems ideal. I know you can have multiple views over the same source but I haven't figured out how to do this yet. Is that the right approach to solving this? How? Cheers, Berryl
