  • Why isn't this simple test class's method inherited in Ruby?

    - by Kevin Bannister
    Consider this very simple logging class: class MockLog def self.log_stub_method(*args) args.each do |a| define_method "#{a}" do |msg| t = Time.now.strftime("%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S") $stderr.puts "[#{a.upcase}] \u00bb [#{t}] #{msg}" end end end log_stub_method :fatal, :error, :warn, :info, :debug end Let's add logging to all our classes: class Module def has_logging() class_eval { @log = MockLog.new def log self.class.instance_variable_get :@log end } end end Now, why doesn't this work? class Foo has_logging end Foo.new.log.nil? # => false, as expected class Bar < Foo end Bar.new.log.nil? # => true?! Why wasn't the `log` method inherited?

  • Storing a variable into a database

    - by Alekx
In an attempt to better learn Rails and I'm building a simple Blackjack game, but I'm running into a problem of storing the variable. I understand how to store user-genereated data into the db using form_for, but I'm struggling to create a random number and put it in the db. @hand = rand(9) + 2 I have "hand" as a field in my db, just curious how to store this random number. Any help anyone could provide to point me in the right direction would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Reducing similar commands

    - by Kevin
    How can I reduce the amount of similar commands into a loop? Something like pictureBox7.BackColor = Color.FromArgb(187, 187, 187); pictureBox9.BackColor = Color.FromArgb(187, 187, 187); pictureBox10.BackColor = Color.FromArgb(187, 187, 187); pictureBox11.BackColor = Color.FromArgb(187, 187, 187); pictureBox12.BackColor = Color.FromArgb(187, 187, 187); pictureBox13.BackColor = Color.FromArgb(187, 187, 187); G2g for now, will add on later.

  • Preloading Image Bug in IE6-8

    - by Kevin C.
Page in question: http://phwsinc.com/our-work/one-rincon-hill.asp In IE6-8, when you click the left-most thumbnail in the gallery, the image never loads. If you click the thumbnail a second time, then it will load. I'm using jQuery, and here's my code that's powering the gallery: $(document).ready(function() { // PROJECT PHOTO GALLERY var thumbs = $('.thumbs li a'); var photoWrapper = $('div.photoWrapper'); if (thumbs.length) { thumbs.click( function(){ photoWrapper.addClass('loading'); var img_src = $(this).attr('href'); // The two lines below are what cause the bug in IE. They make the gallery run much faster in other browsers, though. var new_img = new Image(); new_img.src = img_src; var photo = $('#photo'); photo.fadeOut('slow', function() { photo.attr('src', img_src); photo.load(function() { photoWrapper.removeClass('loading'); photo.fadeIn('slow'); }); }); return false; }); } }); A coworker told me that he's always had problems with the js Image() object, and advised me to just append an <img /> element inside of a div set to display:none;, but that's a little messy for my tastes--I liked using the Image() object, it kept things nice and clean, no unnecessary added HTML markup. Any help would be appreciated. It still works without the image preloading, so if all else fails I'll just wrap the preloading in an if !($.browser.msie){ } and call it a day.

  • How to synchronize two DataBase Schemas Oracle 10G?

    - by gnash-85
Hi Masters, Good Day, I am new and very naive to Oracle DB. I am using Oracle 10G. Let me explain to you. I have one source database named ( DB1) and Target Database named (DB2). I have 2 schema's named dbs1 and dbs2 in the source database (DB1). I have exported both the database schemas in Source Database (DB1) and imported it successfully into the Target Database (DB2). Now I face a challenge in synchronizing these database schemas every time from Source DB (DB1) to Target DB (DB2). Can anyone please help in letting me know how can achieve this synchronization? It would a great help. Thanks Nash

  • Preventing dictionary attacks on a web application

    - by Kevin Pang
What's the best way to prevent a dictionary attack? I've thought up several implementations but they all seem to have some flaw in them: Lock out a user after X failed login attempts. Problem: easy to turn into a denial of service attack, locking out many users in a short amount of time. Incrementally increase response time per failed login attempt on a username. Problem: dictionary attacks might use the same password but different usernames. Incrementally increase response time per failed login attempt from an IP address. Problem: easy to get around by spoofing IP address. Incrementally increase response time per failed login attempt within a session. Problem: easy to get around by creating a dictionary attack that fires up a new session on each attempt.

  • How does Rails Plugin Storage work?

    - by Kevin
Trying to figure out how to install rails plugins manually on windows so I have a few questions. What does the directory need to be named in vendor/plugins? Is it arbitrary or is it linked to something within the plugin config files or is that what you set in the environment.rb? Once I've copied the files to the correct directory, do I always need to run something inside like init.rb or is it good to go? What's the difference between 'require' and 'include'? Thanks!

  • Viable development for iPhone after 3.3.1 change?

    - by Kevin
With the latest changes to the developer agreement by Apple, how inherant is the risk of using any kind of framework to develop Apps for devices now? Should shops risk using things like MonoTouch, Three20, Appcelerator since this change? How are some iPhone/iPad developers here handling it? http://www.pcworld.com/article/193916/apples_new_iphone_app_policy_unreasonable_and_unjustifiable.html http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/04/iphone-flash-policy-steve-jobs/ http://37signals.com/svn/posts/2273-five-rational-arguments-against-apples-331-policy

  • Rails - Dynamic cookie domains using Rack

    - by Tim B.
I'm fairly new to Rails and Rack, but this guy had a seemingly straightforward write-up about using Rack to implement dynamic session domain middleware. The code looks good to and I've implemented it here on my local machine, but I'm still not able to transcend top level domains on a single login. Here's the middleware code: class SetCookieDomain def initialize(app, default_domain) @app = app @default_domain = default_domain end def call(env) host = env["HTTP_HOST"].split(':').first env["rack.session.options"][:domain] = custom_domain?(host) ? ".#{host}" : "#{@default_domain}" @app.call(env) end def custom_domain?(host) domain = @default_domain.sub(/^\./, '') host !~ Regexp.new("#{domain}$", Regexp::IGNORECASE) end end And then in environment.db: config.load_paths += %W(#{RAILS_ROOT}/app/middlewares) Lastly in production.db (and development.db): config.middleware.use "SetCookieDomain", ".example.org" Any help is greatly appreciated. EDIT: I'm running Rails 2.3.3 and Rack 1.0

  • Instantiating class by string using PHP 5.3 namespaces

    - by Kevin
I can't get around an issue instantiating a new class by using a string variable and PHP 5.3. namespaces. For example, this works; $class = 'Reflection'; $object = new $class(); However, this does not; $class = '\Application\Log\MyClass'; $object = new $class(); A fatal error gets thrown stating the class cannot be found. However it obviously can be instantiated if using the FQN i.e.; $object = new \Application\Log\MyClass; I've found this to be aparrent on PHP 5.3.2-1 but not not in later versions. Is there a work around for this?

  • Linq To Sql Entity Updated from Trigger

    - by James Helms
I have a Table called Address. I have a Trigger for insert on that table that does some spacial calculations on the address that determines what neighborhood boundaries it is in. address = new Address { Street = this.Street, City = this.City, State = this.State, ZipCode = this.ZipCode, latitude = this.Latitude, longitude = this.Longitude, YearBuilt = this.YearBuilt, LotSize = this.LotSize, FinishedSize = this.FinishedSize, Bedrooms = this.Bedrooms, Bathrooms = this.Bathrooms, UseCode = this.UseCode, HOA = this.HOA, UpdateDate = DateTime. Now }; db.AddToAddresses(address); db.SaveChanges(); In the database i can clearly see that the Trigger ran and updated the neighborhoodID in the address table for the row. I tried to just reload that record to get the assigned id like this: address = (from a in db.Addresses where a.AddressID == address.AddressID select a).First(); In the debugger i can clearly see that the address.AddressID is correct, entity doesn't update in memory. Is there any work around for this?

  • EditText and Button on the same line with Textiew underneath?

    - by Kevin
Hi, I am trying to have an EditText widget next to a button with a text view underneath. The EditText should resize and fill the screen accordingly, while the button's width is always only what it needs to be by setting the width to wrap_content. The layout should not be relative. Below is the code I have so far some of which was found here on StackOverflow. Removing the text view gives the desired appearance for the EditText and button, but when the TextView is added the view goes to ... well. Not sure why the code is not showing? I put it into a < code< pre block without success. http://pastebin.com/WgH6qrTm

  • sqlite & python - only pulls the first result

    - by pencilNero
This is pretty strange (admitedly, this is my first attempt with python / sqlite), but I can seem to get all of the rows if I do a fetchAll(), but other than that - no matter what I try, always ends up in the db only returning the first row - the second iteration stops because a null is returned. Wondering if there is something wrong with how I am coding this up in python? The db seems ok.. con = sqlite3.connect('backup.db') con.row_factory = sqlite3.Row cur = con.cursor() cur.execute('select * from tb1;') for row in cur: try: # row = dataCur.fetchone() #if row == None: break print type(row) print ' Starting on: %i' % row[0] cleaner = Cleaner(scripts=True, remove_tags=['img'], embedded=True) try: cleaned = cleaner.clean_html(row[2]) #data stored in second col cur.execute('update tb1 set data = ? where id = ?;', (cleaned, row[0])) except AttributeError: print 'Attribute error' print ' Ended on: %i' % row[0] except IOError: print 'IOexception'

  • Using Google Map Headers (YM4R) on Heroku

    - by Kevin
I have the following at the top of my view: <%= GMap.header %> Heroku is giving me an ActionView::TemplateError on that line.... this works on my own machine but not on Heroku.... why is that? Is there something about Heroku that doesn't allow? In the final compile on the browser, the above code translates into this on the client side: <script src="http://maps.google.com/maps?file=api&amp;v=2.x&amp;key=XXXXX;hl=&amp;sensor=false" type="text/javascript"> </script> <script src="/javascripts/ym4r-gm.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

  • jQuery: exclude class on click

    - by Kevin Brown
//Table select $("#reports-table tr").click( function() { var detail_id = $(this).attr('id'); $(this).addClass("selected"); $(this).siblings().removeClass("selected"); $('#reports-right').show().load('/members/details/'+detail_id); $('#reports-table').width(680); } ); I currently am using this code to add a selected class to a table row and show details of the row clicked in a right 'aside'. The problem is, I have action buttons in the row--when they are clicked, becausee they are children of the tr, this function still runs... How can I exclude a certain class?

  • Can't use method return value in write context; Not sure where to go from here

    - by Morgan Green
This is my source for the variable. <?php if ($admin->get_permissions()=3) echo 'Welcome to the Admin Panel'; else echo 'Sorry, You do not have access to this page'; ?> And the code that I'm actually trying to call with the if statement is: public function get_permissions() { $username = $_SESSION['admin_login']; global $db; $info = $db->get_row("SELECT `permissions` FROM `user` WHERE `username` = '" . $db->escape($username) . "'"); if(is_object($info)) return $info->permissions; else return ''; } This should be a simple way to call my pages that the user is authorized for by using an else if statement. Or So I thought

  • Can't update rows in my database using Entity Framework...?

    - by Dissonant
Okay, this is really weird. I made a simple database with a single table, Customer, which has a single column, Name. From the database I auto-generated an ADO.NET Entity Data Model, and I'm trying to add a new Customer to it like so: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; namespace Test { class Program { static void Main() { Database1Entities db = new Database1Entities(); Customer c = new Customer(); c.Name = "Harry"; db.AddToCustomer(c); db.SaveChanges(); } } } But it doesn't persist Customer "Harry" to the database! I've been scratching my head for a while now wondering why such a simple operation doesn't work. What on earth could be the problem!?

  • Can I use Cassandra to store objects?

Hi, My application works like this. A database(Mysql) where there is a command. The command is an object(consists of fields many fields like ints ans strings). There is a webservice which interact with the database and get the command from the db and performs some operation. The way how I am storing the command into db is by stripping all the fields and inserting them in to the db. Can I use cassandra in place of mysql and store the command object?

  • How to pass a variable through url and use it inside a controller

    - by anthonypliu
I have this controller: public ActionResult Details(String UserName) { using (var db = new MatchGamingEntities()) { var Users = from m in db.Users join m2 in db.MyProfiles on m.UserId equals m2.UserId where m.UserName == UserName select new UserViewModel { UserName = m.UserName, LastActivityDate = m.LastActivityDate, Address = m2.Address, City = m2.City, State = m2.State, Zip = m2.Zip }; return View(Users.SingleOrDefault()); } } I type in the url Profiles/Details/hello, but it does not work, if I do Profiles/Details?UserName=hello then it works. I have another ActionResult just like this except taking in an int id as parameter and it works fine with the first url format.
