• How is a "Software Developer" different from a "Software Consultant"? What makes a consultant?

  I have seen a lot of people claiming themselves to be a "software consultant". These consultants do what a normal software developer does, write code, estimate tasks, fix bugs and attend meetings etc. The only difference being the financials, consultants end up earning more. Then how is a software developer different from a "consultant"? In addition to the main question, I would like to know how can a software developer become a consultant? Are there any specific guidelines for a consultant? Do they need to amass certifications and write up research papers? Please do not confuse the software consultant with a management consultant. Software consultants I have seen are not managers.

  I'm looking at a new chapter in my career. I'm a web developer, but now I'm starting to play around with C, compilers, and things I didn't have to work with before. It's all very intriguing! As I'm getting more and more into the "lower level" arena, I'm wondering how devices (mice, printers, webcams, microphones, etc...) are controlled, managed, detected, or used in general with software. I ask because I'm really having a hard time finding straightforward documentation online describing or giving examples of how hardware interacts with software. Does someone know of decent sites that can get me started learning this?

• SugarCRM - how to make users see only child users?

  Hello, I want to change the behaviour of Sugar CRM community version. Here's what sugar currently does: 1) Admin logs into Sugar. 2) Admin clicks on Admin tab. 3) Admin creates a new user named George with admin access 4) Under user information section, Admin makes George report to Admin (in the database, it will show users.report_to_id is the admin's user_id) 5) Admin saves and logs out 6) George logs in with his password 7) George goes to admin tab. 8) George goes to list users page and sees all users, including Admin, the person he is supposed to report to. I want to change step 8 such that George is not allowed to see the user he reports to. Additionally, he is not allowed to see his grand parent user, great grand parent user, great great grand parent user etc... George should only be able to see users that he creates. How can I achieve this? Is this even possible?

• Give back full control to a user on a disk from another computer

  I have my friend's hard drive mounted externally. After messing with the permissions with TAKEOWN so I could fix some viruses, I have full control over their drive. The problem is, now it's stuck in a "autochk not found" reboot sequence. I think the problem is that the boot sector is invisible to the drive now. So my question is, How can I use icacls to give back the full ownership, when the user I am giving it to is not on my machine? I ran the TAKEOWN command from my windows 7 laptop, their machine is a windows xp Professional with three partitions, I only altered the one that has the boot sector. • Comparing developer productivity tools

  I am getting ready to test developer productivity tools for our team (Coderush, Resharper, JustCode, etc). We're planning to roll the tool out the same time as we deploy Visual Studio 2010 and TFS. I've seen several posts discussing the merits of one tool versus another. However, I haven't been able to find any discussion of a methodology self evaluating. One approach I've seen is to use each tool for a month or so and decide which one you like best. This seems completely reasonable if I were evaluating it for myself, but since I'm evaluating for others as well, I'd like to do something more rigorous. I'm hoping to collect some ideas on how to do that. As a starting point, my thinking was to come up a list of 10-20 crucial features to compare, then prepare a matrix where I can compare the relative strengths of each product. Once the matrix is complete, we can make a well informed decision about which product aligns with out needs. Since I'm not a user of any product now, it's been difficult to figure out which features are critical and which are less so. Thank you!

• Fastest Method to Learn Web Design for a Developer

  I am a Web developer and in my projects I have noticed that my weakest point is not being good at the front-end design. Relying on other designers can be annoying if they are not able to produce as quickly as I want. My perspective on HTML/CSS is that it is basically a big hack that amazingly works. There are too many CSS and browser specific bugs/quirks to learn and remember them all without spending extreme amounts of time trying to untangle everything. Is there a fast track route to getting CSS into my brain? I have looked at some CSS books, but to me they really read as long lists of how to render things correctly in IE6 and how to make corners rounded. (Seriously why does it require so many tricks to make a sharp corner round? On any platform but the Web this would be called a major oversight.) Does there exist something that does the analogous to CSS that jQuery does for JavaScript? Using jQuery you don't need to know JavaScript well to make things that work. I am not interested in learning why IE6 does things in weird ways because I don't care about supporting it at all. I am more interested in a method of learning how to use CSS to do what I want without spending hours and hours reading obscure blogs.

If you just have, for example, three developers and don't have the resources to hire a full time QA manager, how do you assure that the code quality meets set standards? What kind of things do you pay attention to in quality assurance? Quality isn't just about the code doing what it is supposed to do (code is properly tested with automatic tests). Quality is also about the code being clean (readable, maintainable, well structured, documented, etc). I'm looking forward to hear what kind of processes you have applied to your team to assure that the quality meets the set standards. We've applied a process where we rotate the QA role between the developers. Each developer is responsible for QA one week at a time. Each changeset is revised and checked that existing tests pass, required new tests have been written, that the code is clean and, of course, that the project builds.

• What are the skills a Drupal Developer needs?

  I'm trying to write out a list of key Drupal competencies, mainly so I can confirm what I know, don't know and don't know I don't know. (Thanks D. Rumsfeld for that quote!) I think some of these are really broad, for instance there's quite a difference between making a functional theme and creating a theme with good SEO, load times and so on, but I'm hoping you could assume that a half decent web developer would look after that anyway. Just interested to see what people here feel is also important. Able to install Drupal on a server (pretty obvious). Able to research and install modules to meet project requirements Able to configure all the basic modules and core settings to get a site running Able to create a custom Theme from scratch which validates with good HTML/CSS and also pays attention to usability and accessibility. (Whilst still looking kick-ass). Able to use Hooks in the theme template.php to alter forms, page layout and other core functionality Can make forms from scratch using the API - with validation and posting back to the DB/email Can use Views to create blocks or pages, use php snippets as arguments, etc. Can create custom modules from scratch utilising core hooks and other hooks.

• Good ways to earn income as a self employed developer

  I was just wondering if people could share their experiences and ideas about generating / earning income from a software product or service they have personally developed. To me this seems like a good way to earn a living while doing what we love (programming) and working on projects and problems which interest us. Ie, NOT boring bank or marketing software etc 9-5 all week... Some ideas I have are things like web 2.0 style sites (Facebook,Youtube,Twitter,Digg) etc etc... - These can be very very profitable as we all know but can take years to take off. Are there ways to survive until/if this does happen? Mobile applications. Iphone, Google Android and the new up coming Nintendo DS app store. These have good potential to make it easy to find a market for your application and make selling it easy. Shareware/PC software. A bit 80's and 90's and you kind of need to be a salesman/marketer to sell it but its the only other thing I can think of. Also im not talking about doing freelance work. Im only interested in idea's you can come up with and develop your self (not other peoples ideas or problems which are you are payed to develop). Things that a sole developer or at the most 2 developers could work on and have good potential for high returns on investment (in terms of time) would be great. PS, I wish I thought of stackoverflow!

• View Source and Chrome Developer Tools showing different output

  I have a page located here. Viewing it in Chrome and Firefox show a really small h1 title, and also it changes color as if it is a link. The template that generates everything looks exactly how it should be. When diagnosing the issue, the relevant section of code looks like this when I go to view source: <div class="page-heading"> <h1>Title Here</h1> </div> However, when I go to view it in Chrome's Developer tools, it is throwing in extraneous malformed anchor tags, which is obviously causing the hovering behavior. This is what it looks like to the dev tools: <div class="page-heading"> <h1> <a style="font-family: arial; font-size: 9px" <="" a="">Title Here</a> </h1> </div> In addition, when viewing a local copy of the site, the output shown in the dev tools is the same as viewing the source and they both render correctly locally. Oddly enough, all version of IE render it correctly. The current version of both Chrome and Firefox both render it weirdly. Initially I thought it may be a user agent stylesheet problem, but if anything the CSS is fine, it's the HTML that is malformed.

• Financial Market Developer dilemma...

  ...In the future I am planning to work in the financial sector as a programmer. I have a couple of options right now (1 or 2): Learn and master .NET since presumably that's widely used in that industry OR Learn the programming concepts, learn algorithms, learn a little bit of c,c++,c#,java,objective-c,sql,oracle,cobol - in other words learn the fundamental principles that tie all programming languages together without going too deep in any particular language. Someone has told me that most of the time as a programmer you won't be writing any code, but instead maintaing and existing code that people before you have built. Does that mean I don't really need to master any specific language and as long as I have general concepts it'll be good enough? If you or if you know someone who has worked in the financial industry as a software developer could you please share the experience and what is the daily routine consists of? Also what should I be learning right now while I am still young and in college? Do I have to thoroughly understand the market and the current economy?   We run our SQL Server services using a low privileged domain account. That account is NOT a local admin on the OS. Only access I give the user account is assigned during install of SQL: full control over its mount points and then everything else is granted by the SQL Server 2005/2008 installer. I need to create a linked server in SQL Server 2008 to an ODBC data source. So I remoted into the computer using my domain account, which is part of a group that DOES have local admin privs to the OS. I created a system DSN and configured it to connect to another SQL Server. The DSN works perfectly when I test it. However, when I try to create the linked server, I get an error. It appears to me that the DSN is invisible to the domain account that SQL Server is running as. It seems that this problem is only happening to me on Windows 2008 servers. Does anybody know whether there's anything that you need to do after creating a DSN to make it visible for other users to access?

• How do you guys handle custom yum repository?

  I have a bunch of tools (nagios, munin, puppet, etc...) that gets installed on all my servers. I'm in the process of building a local yum repository. I know most folks just dump all the rpms into a single folder (broken down into the correct path) and then run createrepo inside the directory. However, what would happen if you had to update the rpms? I ask because I was going to throw each software into its own folder. Example one, put all packages inside one folder (custom_software) /admin/software/custom_software/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/4.6/x86_64 What I'm thinking of ... /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/nagios/4.6/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/5.4/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/5.4/x86_64 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/4.6/i386 /admin/software/custom_software/puppet/4.6/x86_64 Ths way, if I had to update to the latest version of puppet, I can save manage the files accordingly. I wouldn't know which rpms belong to which software if I threw them into one big folder. Makes sense?

• Debian - Secure system from current administrator

  Hello, I am the Network and Systems Administrator in an organization of just under 500 users. We have a number of Windows Servers, and that is certainly my area of expertise. We also have a very small handful of Debian servers. We are about to terminate the sysadmin of these Debian systems. Short of powering down the systems, I would like to know how I can ensure that the previous admin does not have control of these systems in the future, at least until we hire a replacement linux sysadmin. I have physical/virtual-console access to each of the systems, so I can reboot them in various user-modes. I just don't know what to do. Please assume that I do not currently have root access to all of these systems (an oversight on my part that I now recognize.) I have some experience in Linux, and use it on my desktop on a daily basis, but I must admit that I am a competent user of linux, not a systems admin. I have no fear of the command line however.... Is there a list of steps that one should take to "secure" a system from somebody else? Again, I assure you that this is legit, I am re-taking control of my employer's systems, at the request of my employer. I hope to not have to shut the systems down permanently and still be reasonably certain that they are secure. Thanks for your time.

• BackupExec 2012 File System Archiving - Access is denied to Remote Agent

  Gentlemen, I've been struggling with a Trial version of Symantec Backup Exec 2012 for about a week now. It was installed as an upgrade to our 12.5 license, and the setup completed with no issues. The reason I upgraded is solely for the File System Archiving option as I'm working to reduce the amount of live data in my servers. Backups work A-Ok and I have followed the instructions in the Admin Manual to make sure I had filled all requirements. The account BE is running under is a member of the Local administrators group as required and has been added to the test share that I'm using to evaluate the archiving function. Testing the credentials in the job setup window always works fine, and I am able to add both regular and Admin$ shares to my Archive selection. However, every time I run the Archive job, I get the following message: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/59540229/BEXec.png I've already tried to troubleshoot DNS resolution issues as suggested in the Symantec KB to no avail. The only thing I can think of, at this point, is that a trial license doesn't allow me to use the Archiving function, although that would seem silly on their part. • How do I enable Ubuntu Gnome system tools

  I am running Ubuntu 10 with Gnome 2.30.2. This is a VMWare workstation image provided by another company that I do not have support in this regard. I am trying to access the graphical tools for configuring the network, users, and services but the System-Administration menu does not have these options listed. The main issue I am trying to solve is to correct the problems with the gnome menu options and network settings I have the gnome-system-tools package installed, and I am unable to run command-line versions of the tools, such as nm-applet (I get no GUI if I run that command, the process is running in the background). I realize that I can perform many tasks command-line, but I would like to use the GUI for administrative functions as I am not overly proficient for all command for restarting services and setting a static IP with a specific gateway. Further, I can run gnome-nettool, but I cannot change the IP, I can only see my network card. nm-connection-editor does not show any network cards that I can configure to change the IP. Currently, I am getting a DHCP through my NAT in VMWare, I want to set it to a specific IP address though. • Problem with System.Diagnostics.Process RedirectStandardOutput to appear in Winforms Textbox in real

  I'm having problems with the redirected output from a console application being presented in a Winforms textbox in real-time. The messages are being produced line by line however as soon as interaction with the Form is called for, nothing appears to be displayed. Following the many examples on both Stackoverflow and other forums, I can't seem to get the redirected output from the process to display in the textbox on the form until the process completes. By adding debug lines to the 'stringWriter_StringWritten' method and writing the redirected messages to the debug window I can see the messages arriving during the running of the process but these messages will not appear on the form's textbox until the process completes. Grateful for any advice on this.   I've read as many search results I could find on this dreaded problem, unfortunatelly, each one seems to focus on a specific function call. My problem is that I get the same error from multiple functions, which I am guessing are being called back from functions that I use. To make matters worse, the actual code is within a custom private framework which is being imported in another project, and as such, debugging isn't as simple? Can anyone point me to the right direction?   I want to reinstall Ubuntu keeping my data intact. I have 160 GB hardrive (sata or pata I don't know but it's slim and made in China) with a 40 GB ext3 partition, a 4GB swap memory and 3 other partition with a FAT32 file system. I have around 4GB space on my drive where Linux is installed. I'd like to keep the data intact, especially the Downloads folder, desktop, and /var/www; And I no longer have access to any other machines or external storage devices.
