  I have registered a new domain with a hosting company. They offer the feature that for each new domain there is an associated placeholder page. Actually it is a "Site not configured page" with some technical text and links to the hosting site. I could: submit its URL to search engines right now remove the page and submit the URL when the site will be online (could be a couple of months) replace the default page with "coming soon" contents and submit the URL opt for simplicity and add a blank html page having a focused and well descriptive title and maybe some meta tag other? I prefer 4 over 3 because at the moment there aren't precise project details to provide. What's the proper way to notify search engines that soon this site will be online, without getting penalized for side effects I'm not considering or aware of?

  Hi! I'm looking for a simplest way to remove duplication in my WPF code. Code below is a simple traffic light with 3 lights - Red, Amber, Green. It is bound to a ViewModel that has one enum property State taking one of those 3 values. Code declaring 3 ellipses is very duplicative. Now I want to add animation so that each light fades in and out - styles will become even bigger and duplication will worsen. • In WPF, Selecting ItemContainerStyle based on data bound content

  In #WPF you have ItemTemplateSelectors. But, can you also select an ItemContainerStyle based on the datatype of a bound object? I am databinding a scatterview. I want to set some properties of the generated ScatterViewItems based on the object in their DataContext. A mechanism similar to ItemTemplateSelector for styles would be great. Is that at all possible? I am now binding to properties in the objects that I am displaying to get the effect, but that feels like overhead and too complex (and most importantly, something that our XU designers can't do by themselves). • Problem with URL encoded parameters in URL view helper

  So my problem is kinda weird, it only occurs when I test the application offline (on my PC with WampServer), the same code works 100% correctly online. But offline with WampServer I click on the link and get 404 error like this: Not Found The requested URL /public/admin/index/approve-photo/id/1/ret/admin/index/photos was not found on this server. What the hell? I'm using the latest version of WampServer (WampServer 2.0i [11/07/09]). Everything else works. • Is there a potential for resource leak/double free here?

  The following sample (not compiled so I won't vouch for syntax) pulls two resources from resource pools (not allocated with new), then "binds" them together with MyClass for the duration of a certain transaction. The transaction, implemented here by myFunc, attempts to protect against leakage of these resources by tracking their "ownership". The local resource pointers are cleared when its obvious that instantiation of MyClass was successful. The local catch, as well as the destructor ~MyClass return the resources to their pool (double-frees are protected by teh above mentioned clearing of the local pointers). Instantiation of MyClass can fail and result in an exception at two steps (1) actual memory allocation, or (2) at the constructor body itself. I do not have a problem with #1, but in the case of #2, if the exception is thrown AFTER m_resA & m_resB were set. Causing both the ~MyClass and the cleanup code of myFunc to assume responsibility for returning these resources to their pools. Is this a reasonable concern? Options I have considered, but didn't like: Smart pointers (like boost's shared_ptr). I didn't see how to apply to a resource pool (aside for wrapping in yet another instance). Allowing double-free to occur at this level but protecting at the resource pools. Trying to use the exception type - trying to deduce that if bad_alloc was caught that MyClass did not take ownership. This will require a try-catch in the constructor to make sure that any allocation failures in ABC() ...more code here... wont be confused with failures to allocate MyClass. • Gmail: security warning icon

  Hello, I just enabled some Gmail Labs programs in my Gmail account, and then I noticed the orange triangle icon with an exclamation mark in it at the end of the address bar of my Google Chrome browser. Clicking on it brought forth a "Security Information' dialog box, with the following messages: "--mail.google.com The identity of website has been verified by Thawlte SGC CA. --Your connection to mail.google.com is encrypted with 128-bit encryption. However, this page includes other resources which are not secure. These resources can be viewed by others while in transit, and can be modified by an attacker to change the look or behavior of the page." I then logged into two of my other Gmail accounts, one of which has no Gmail Labs programs enabled, and the other with 1 program enabled quite some time ago, both with the same result as above (i.e., with the appearance of the orange triangle warning sign in the address bar). I don't remember seeing the orange triangle before, but I'm not sure if it has ever appeared or not. I have "Always use https" enabled for my Gmail accounts. My questions are: Is there a way to identify and remove these un-secure "resources"? (Could enabling Gmail Labs programs have brought these on?) Meanwhile, are my Gmail accounts compromised and unsafe to use? If so, what should I being doing about that now? After this problem is solved, would I need to reset the password to my Gmail accounts, and/or take any other measures to restore their security? Many thanks for answering my questions!

  Hi There, I'm working with a windows 2008 domain controller, which I'm having issues connecting to internet resources. A small bit of background, this is a 2008 domain controller that has been added into an existing Win 2k domain, with a goal of replacing the older computers. Both of the older controllers can still access internet resources, and so can all the clients. When I ping Google.ca from the new server, it does resolve to an ip address, but then says "Reply from 192.168.123.20: Destination host unreachable." I'm really at a lost now, I've checked and rechecked my ip configuration, the default gateway is my router, the primary DNS server is the my DC, and the secondary DNS is also my router. The DNS server on the domain has a forwarder added for the router as well. Everything on my local network works just fine, all my internal resources can be resolved. For the time being, I've stopped the Firewall service. I'm not 100% used to Server 2008 yet, but it might be a case of just missing something simple. Thanks for your time.

• Help diagnosing Likewise Open Active Directory authentication problem

  I have two servers which were up until recently authenticating against the companies Active Directory Domain controller. I believe a recent change to the Active Directory administrator password caused the servers to stop authenticating against AD. I tried to add the servers back to the domain using the command: domainjoin-cli join example.com adusername this seemed to work without complaints, but when I try to login via ssh with my domain account, I get an invalid password error. When I run the command: lw-enum-users it prints all of the domain users, and looking up my own account, I see that it is valid and my password hasn't expired. • NetApp FAS270 head doesn't see disks

  I have an FAS270C. For months, I've been running it in a split-head manner (that is, with each head serving data totally independently, and without any clustering even being enabled) in order to facilitate moving some data around. I finally got everything situated, moved all the data to one of the heads, and was trying to get clustering set back up. Now when I try to install OnTap onto the "new" head, it cannot see any of the disks in the head shelf. (That is, the shelf into which the heads are inserted.) I've booted into maintenance mode, and it shows me that the 0b adapter, which should be the adapter that that shelf and its disks should be presented on, is in "OFFLINE (physical)" state. If I try to enable it with either "storage enable adapter 0b" or "fcadmin online 0b", it waits for about 30 seconds and then says: [fci.initialization.failed:error]: Initialization failed on Fibre Channel adapter 0b. [fci.adapter.online.failed:error]: Fibre Channel adapter 0b failed to come online. There is currently nothing attached to its external 0b port. I've tried it with and without an SFP plugged into it, and with and without its internal termination switch on. The currently active head can see those disks, and can see that two of them are assigned to the other head. Before I started reconfiguring, the "new" head could see disks on that shelf. They may even be the same disks that OnTap was installed on previously. Does anyone have any idea how to proceed?

• RRAS VPN on windows 2k3 AD, can access rras server only.

  I'm setting up a test lab and here is the current configuration: 192.168.86.201 - a windows 2003 machine acting as PDC with AD/DNS/DHCP/WINS. 192.168.86.62 - windows 2003 machine is the RRAS server with IAS, also a file/print server. 192.168.86.6 - gateway/router to internet 192.168.86.21 - Windows XP Workstation Everything works on the internal network, File/Print/AD etc. Whenever a user connects via vpn to the RRAS server remotely using their domain credentials, they are assigned an ip address from the 192.168.86.201 machine along with the wins server address etc. The vpn user can then ping/access resources on the RRAS server, but cannot ping/access resources of any other machines by name or ip. However, if I ping by name, it does resolve to the correct ip address, just no replies. I did notice that on the RRAS server the 'internal' interface gets an ip address of 192.168.86.75 when a remote user connects, and the remote user is assigned, for example 192.168.86.71 . The RRAS server responds on both the .62 and .75 ip addresses. The client also unchecks the 'use remote default gateway option'. Also, I tried connecting a laptop to the physical network, joining the domain, then going remote and dialing the connection before domain login, and everything seems to work, e.g. browse-able shares via network neighborhood. But I can't really join the domain remotely if I cannot access any other resources. I really need to monitor traffic to see whats happening to those packets but won't be able to until this weekend. Any help is appreciated, will provide whatever configurations are needed.

• Is the sysadmin/netadmin the defacto project planner at your organization?

  At my company it has somehow over the past few years slowly become my job to come up with a project plan, milestones and time lines for deployment of developer applications. Typical scenario: My team receives a request for a new website/db combo and date for deployment. I send back a questionnaire for the developer to fill out on all the reqs for the site (ssl? db? growth projections etc.) After I get back all the information, the head of development wants a well developed document of what servers will it live on why those servers what is the time line for creating the resources step-by-step SOP for getting the application on the server and all related resources created (dns, firewall, load balancer etc.) I maybe just whining but it feels like this is something better suited to our Project Management staff (which we have) or to the developer. I understand that I need to give them a time-line on creating the resources, but still feel like this is overkill. We already produce documentation on where everything lives and track configuration changes to equipment. How do other sysadmin folks handle this?

• Resize a RAID 1 volume on OSX Snow Leopard - how? (Note: software raid)

  I've scoured the Internet in search of an answer to this question, and as usual with OSX-related topics, I often don't find any deep-dive technical explanations sufficient enough to feel confident doing dangerous things. Here is my question: I have a Mac Pro, running OSX 10.6.2. I have, as my main root/boot disk, a RAID 1 volume called "Mirror1". Mirror1 is comprised of two 1 TB disks. Mirror1, however, is fixed at 640 GB. That's because, I originally took a 640GB disk, bought a terabyte disk, mirrored it (using diskutil appleraid enable...), when it synced I removed the 640GB and replaced it with a second 1 TB disk, and synced again. Voila! A single 640 GB replaced by two 1 TB disks in a mirror.. Actually, no. There's still something missing from the equation: Mirror1 needs to be expanded from 640GB to 1 TB to match the partition sizes on each of those disks. How do I do this? • Need Suggestions on Backup Strategies and Alternatives?

  I'm not sure where else to post this question since it is not exactly Code or Development related...but I know Stackoverflow is a very responsive to questions... Currently, I use Mozy Home to perform an online backup of my laptop. So far, this works well, since I only use one laptop that needs to be backed up. But, soon this may change and I want to explore other alternatives than having to perform an online backup on all machines. Ideally, I want to set up a Network Computer (Laptop/Desktop) with enough storage to hold the backups for all other machines that I would have. Each machine should be responsible for performing their backup (to the Network Computer). This would require some capability like Mozy's incremental backup strategy, but instead of online backup, I would prefer it to be done locally to the Network Computer. Can you recommend a local backup software (backup to a network pc, incremental backup, good restore options)? I'm also looking for any ideas on a local backup strategy even if its different from what I've stated? What works and what doesn't work? Thanks in advance for your help!

• Google Apps Sync bloated PST file to 14GB

  Back story: I have Outlook connected to my Google Apps email and noticed that some mail never got migrated from my original PST file. I found some VBA code online that compares mail in different PST folders, modified it to find missing and copy those to the target folder. I ran it folder by folder and moved missing mail. Before the exercise the Google Apps PST was about ~4GB and after it was ~4.7GB. Problem: I left Outlook open so Google Sync can copy it online. 24 hours later the Google Apps PST file bloated to 14GB+ and none of the mail has been synced to the cloud. I know that there should be at most ~5GB of mail. Why is the rest of the space being taken up? Funny thing is Gmail shows 3GB as being used online. What I tried: I emptied the deleted items folder and recycling bin I've run Outlook compact PST and it didn't work. I tried SCANPST.exe on the PST and it didn't work. I re-ran compact PST and it didn't work (after SCANPST found and fixed a few errors) Any ideas out there on what caused the problem and how to solve it?

• How does the "Steam" platform work? Is it DRM? Can I trust "Steam"-powered software? [closed]

  So – I just bought the new game Supreme Commander 2. This question is not about the game, but about the online software installation platform that it seems to require. I haven't bought a game in a long time, and I'm puzzled: Apparently, SC2 is a "Steam"-powered game. When I went to install the game, it asked me to either create a new Steam account, or log in with an existing account. I clicked "Cancel" because I don't plan to play online and I don't want anything unnecessary installed on my computer, since I only plan to play single player! However, after clicking "Cancel", the installer asked for my confirmation that I indeed wanted to cancel installation of the game! I thought I was just canceling the "online" portions! So I really want to know: How do "Steam" powered games work? Is this essentially a form of DRM (Digital Rights Management)? Can I trust this software platform? Has anybody done any independent verification on how this platform works? (I'm very leery of any DRM after the Sony BMG CD copy protection scandal. Thank goodness for Mark Russinovich.) Does the "Steam" platform install anything particularly nasty or unwanted on my computer? High-rep users: Please vote to reopen this question. It is not about the game, but about the software update platform / updater / DRM. Imagine if the software in question were a productivity application. The issues remain the same.
