    - by Helper Method
Is Test Driven Development limited to OO? Or is it possible/useful to use it in conjunction with a procedural language? I have to start a greater project in C the next few weeks and I'm thinking of ways how to the developing.

  • Need help in sorting the programming buzz-words

    - by cwap
How do you sort out the good buzz from the bad buzz? - I really need your help here :) I see a lot of buzz-words nowadays, both here on SO and in school. For example, we had a teacher who everyone respected, who said "be careful about gold-plating and death-by-interfacing". Now, everyone and their mama cries whenever I'm creating an interface.. Another example would be here on SO where lately "premature optimization is the root of all evil", so everytime someone asks a perfomance question, he'll get that sentence thrown in his face. A few months ago I remember it was all about NHibernate in here, etc., etc... These things comes and goes, but only the good buzz stays. Now, how do you seperate the good from the bad? By reading blogs from respected persons? By trying to come to a conclusion on your own, and then try to convince others that you're right? By simply ignoring it?

  • R programming function without ()

    - by Mark Kennedy
    So, I Have the following very simple map.r file. I'm trying to have the user type "click" in interactive mode and then have the function . Since it's a function, the user has to type "click()" how can I make it so that they only have to the word (w/o parentheses), and then have that function do something with the img. So the user types: mydist("image.pnm") click //And then the function click does what it's supposed to mydist <- function(mapfile) { img <- read.pnm(mapfile) plot(img) } click <- function() { //Prompt user to click on img }

  • programming/selling mobile apps internationally

    - by dootcher
If I'm looking to sell my app in other markets other than the U.S. on both Android and iOS, do I need to do anything inside the app coding-wise? I don't imagine that I need to but I just want to make sure. Also, while I'm at it, how do I collect on international app purchases considering they are in another currency? Will the currency be automatically converted to U.S. dollars or is that my job? Any insight on either of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

    - by tommyogp
Hi all, I have been trying to create an iphone app sending telnet command. However what puzzling me is that the sizes of certain strings are so much different, particularly when they include \n or \r. I listed out a few examples. Please assist. const char *a = "play 25\n"; int sizeBitA1 = sizeof(a); // 8 units int sizeBitA2 = sizeof("play 25\n"); // 9 units const char *b = "\r\n"; int sizeBitB1 = sizeof(b); // 8 units int sizeBitB2 = sizeof("\r\n"); // 3 units

  • Programming in a noisy office [closed]

    - by John Isaacks
Can anyone recommend any techniques or advice for working in a noisy office? I know some people wear headphones and listen to music but I prefer silence. I work in a room with 4 others, there are no walls between us, we just each have our own desk. There is usually always someone talking, or on the phone, or on the intercom. Has anyone else had to deal with this? What did you do? What would you recommend?

  • Legalities of programming companion Android apps

    - by honeal
I'm interested in creating companion apps to several current Android apps and was curious if there is a legal issue with using their name and/or icons from the app. Like the companion app being called Angry Birds Companion or something and you were to use a picture of the level or one of the characters, etc (I'm simply pulling from thin air so don't judge the idea, just the question, please). I know there are Strategy guides to video games that use icons and names, but I'm assuming they have prior consent. Does anyone have any factual input on this?

  • File folder sql programming

    - by eski
I'm trying to figure out the best way to make a file folder system in sql. I'm making a website that will be using similar system as explorer in windows. You open your c: drive and you see there some folders and files, and you open one folder and you see more files and folders there. So what i'm asking, would i use one table for this and just point to the parent id number or what ? I have this in my head.. You make a Primary folder, it gets the u_id=1. Then i make a file in that folder, it gets u_id=2 and p_id=1 so i know its there right? same with the folders. This would all be in one table but i cant help thinking there is some major flaw in this..

  • Make FalseClass behave like TrueClass with meta programming

    - by Edvinas Bartkus
This is theoretical question: is it possible to change FalseClass behavior to act like TrueClass? It is possible to override to_s, xor, &, | behavior but that is not enough. If you like Test Driven Development, follow my colleague's suggestion: puts "false is new true!" if false puts "never happens" if true Asserts won't work, would it? Is it possible to pass the test successfully?

  • Representing a number in a byte array (java programming)

    - by Mark Roberts
I'm trying to represent the port number 9876 (or 0x2694 in hex) in a two byte array: class foo { public static void main (String args[]) { byte[] sendData = new byte[1]; sendData[0] = 0x26; sendData[1] = 0x94; } } But I get a warning about possible loss of precision: foo.java:5: possible loss of precision found : int required: byte sendData[1] = 0x94; ^ 1 error How can I represent the number 9876 in a two byte array without losing precision?

  • Java Programming Help

    - by user215049
hi, im a bit confused on this and i dont know how to solve this question that i have been asked, id be grateful if you could assist me on this question, maybe try to tell me what needs to be done, and how. the question is: Write a method called countChars which takes an InputStream as a parameter, reads the stream and returns the number of characters it contains as an int. Any IOExceptions which might occur in the method should be passed back to the method's caller. Note that the method header should show that it is possible that an exception might occur. i attempted this question with the following code: public class countChars { public int countChars(int InputStream) { return InputStream; } } and i get an error message saying : Main.java:26: cannot find symbol symbol : method countChars(java.io.InputStream) location: class Main s1 = "" + countChars(f1); ^ 1 error
