• Back from Istanbul - Presentations available for download

     (Picture by Paul Thompson, 14-March-2012) On March 14-15th we have celebrated our 2012 Exadata Partner Community EMEA Forum, in Istanbul, Turkey. It has been an intense two days, packed with great content and a lot of networking. Organizing it jointly with the Manageability Partner Forum has allowed participants to benefit from the content of the Manageability sessions, which is a topic that is becoming key as we move to cloud architectures. During the sessions we have listened to two thought-leaders in our industry, Ron Tolido, from Capgemni, and Julian Dontcheff, from Accenture. We thank our Exadata partners -ISE (Germany), Inserve (Sweden), Fors (Russia), Linkplus (Turkey) and Sogeti,  for sharing with the community their experiences in selling and implementing Exadata and Manageability projects. • Why C++ is an abomination [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Why do so many people dislike C++? I was reading the blog by Peter Seibel (Author of Coders at Work) where brilliant programmers like Ken Thompson, Joshua Bloch and Guy Steele have despised c++ to no end. What is it in C++ that people hate so much? And despite so much hate towards it, companies like Google are still using it, and some of the programmers who snubbed C++ have worked or are already working at Google. So, what is it in the language that despite so much hate from top programmers, it's still used at most of the places? I haven't really used C++ beyond academic projects, so i don't know much about the disadvantages of the language. What do programmers here think about it? --Chander

• Can someone provide a short code example of compiler bootstrapping?

  This Turing award lecture by Ken Thompson on topic "Reflections on Trusting Trust" gives good insight about how C compiler was made in C itself. Though I understand the crux, it still hasn't sunk in. So ultimately, once the compiler is written to do lexical analysis, parse trees, syntax analysis, byte code generation etc, a separate machine code is again written to do all that on compiler? Can anyone please explain with a small example of the procedure? Bootstrapping on wiki gives good insights, but only a rough view on it. PS: I am aware of the duplicates on the site, but found them to be an overview which I am already aware

• Why does the task name contain "now / 30"?

  Based on the post it is mentioned (By Brett Porter) that a POM can be read. What i need is to read not only a single pom. I need to read the whole tree of pom's in a multimodule build. Starting with the root pom and it should read automatically the child pom's if it's possible? I need to do this in separate Java Code not in relationship with Maven itself.

• Router won't connect to computer over cable

  I have a Thompson 784 router that connects to the Internet. It works nicely enough. What is wrong is that I have a shielded Cat 5e cable that goes from my room to the router that's in a another room (~30 metres). Both ends are the same; both ends are done nicely; I've tested it with a cable tester and every wire connects. However, when i connect my computer to my router neither one will find the other. So would anyone be nice and please explain what is wrong. p.s.: I have tried many different cable ends (currently it on standard/A), the cable is tested both ways (as it should be) and yes I'm at my wit's end =(

  I have an array whose elements are name, reversed_name, first_initial and second_initial. A typical row is "Aaron Smith", "Smith, Aaron", "a", "s". Each row in the array has a first_initial or second_initial value of "a". I need to display the rows alphabetically but based on the "a" part, so that either the name or reversed_name will be displayed. An example output would be: Aaron Smith Abbot, Paul Adrian Jones Anita Thompson Atherton, Susan I really have no idea how to sort the array this way so any help will be much appreciated!

• LINQ OrderBy with more than one field

  I have a list that I need sorted by two fields. I've tried using OrderBy in LINQ but that only allows me to specify one field. I'm looking for the list to be sorted by the first field and then if there are any duplicates in the first field to sort by the second field. For example I want the results to look like this (sorted by last name then first name). Adams, John Smith, James Smith, Peter Thompson, Fred I've seen that you can use the SQL like syntax to accomplish this but I am looking for a way to do it with the OrderBy method. IList<Person> listOfPeople = /*The list is filled somehow.*/ IEnumerable<Person> sortedListOfPeople = listOfPeople.OrderBy(aPerson => aPerson.LastName, aPerson.FirstName); //This doesn't work.

• How to model a social news feed on Google App Engine

  We want to implement a "News feed" where a user can see messages broadcasted by her friends, sorted with newest message first. But the feed should reflect changes in her friends list. (If she adds new friends, messages from those should be included in the feed, and if she removes friends their messages should not be included.) If we use the pubsub-test example and attach a recipient list to each message this means a lot of manipulation of the message recipients lists when users connect and disconnect friends. We first modeled publish-subscribe "fan out" using conventional RDBMS thinking. It seemed to work at first, but then, since the IN operator works the way it does, we quickly realized we couldn't continue on that path. We found Brett Slatkin's presentation from last years Google I/O and we have now watched it a few times but it isn't clear to us how to do it with "dynamic" recipient lists. What we need are some hints on how to "think" when modeling this.

• Learning JavaScript... Should I skip straight to the good stuff (the frameworks)?

  I learnt HTML/CSS a good few years back, then PHP a little later. I've recently become interesting in web development again, just started playing with frameworks like Django and RoR. I'm curious as to how much time/effort I should spend learning straight JS before looking at frameworks. I've been reading through a let of articles called Mastering AJAX by Brett McLaughlin which seems quite good, but I'm seeing a lot of stuff (such as cross browser compatibility - even for things like XMLHttpRequest) coming up which look like they would be non-issues if using a framework. So, should I keep reading through these articles and try to build stuff using basic JS, or should I just start looking into jQuery and the like? Also, I've been watching a few videos regarding GWT from Google I/O. I've been learning Java over the last year, built a few medium sized apps in it.
