  • Suspend and resume not working on an HP dv7

    - by Emiel
this one is driving me nuts. My HP dv7 laptop isn't resuming from suspend and hybernate. On suspend - resume it leaves me with a black screen. On hibernate it succesfully loads the images and then it hangs.... I searched through internet and tried serveral things, but nothing seems to work for this HP dv7 on Ubuntu 12.04. With 11.10 it didn't work either. Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 450 @ 2.40GHz × 4 VESA: Intel®Ironlake Mobile Graphics 64-bit

  • Upgrading Mac OS X 10.5.8 Corrupted Lightroom 2.7

    - by Tedd
I use Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2. I recntly upgraded to 10.5.8 and began to have issues with LR. So, I reinstalled and downgraded my OS. I'm now running 10.5.2 on my MacBook 2.4G Core Duo with 4G RAM. Everything works fine now, but the downgrade also resulted in having only Safari 3.0.4 and and older version of iTunes. I can't upgrade either of those until I upgrade the OS but I'm reluctant to do so because I might have problems again. Any suggestions? Install 10.6 instead? What kind of issues can I expect from that?

  • Oracle R Distribution 3.1.1 Released

    - by Sherry LaMonica-Oracle
Oracle R Distribution version 3.1.1 has been released to Oracle's public yum today. R-3.1.1 (code name "Sock it to Me") is an update to R-3.1.0 that consists mainly of bug fixes. It also includes enhancements related to accessing package help files, improved accuracy when importing data with large integers, and better integration with RStudio graphics. The full list of new features and bug fixes is listed in the NEWS file.To install Oracle R Distribution using yum, follow the instructions in the Oracle R Enterprise Installation and Administration Guide.Installing using yum will resolve any operating system dependencies automatically. As such, we recommend using yum to install Oracle R Distribution. However, if yum is not available, you can install Oracle R Distribution RPMs directly using RPM commands. For Oracle Linux 5, the Oracle R Distribution RPMs are available in the Enterprise Linux Add-Ons repository:  R-3.1.1-1.el5.x86_64.rpm   R-core-3.1.1-1.el5.x86_64.rpm  R-devel-3.1.1-1.el5.x86_64.rpm  libRmath-3.1.1-1.el5.x86_64.rpm  libRmath-devel-3.1.1-1.el5.x86_64.rpm  libRmath-static-3.1.1-1.el5.x86_64.rpm For Oracle Linux 6, the Oracle R Distribution RPMs are available in the Oracle Linux Add-Ons repository:  R-3.1.1-1.el6.x86_64.rpm  R-core-3.1.1-1.el6.x86_64.rpm  R-devel-3.1.1-1.el6.x86_64.rpm  libRmath-3.1.1-1.el6.x86_64.rpm  libRmath-devel-3.1.1-1.el6.x86_64.rpm  libRmath-static-3.1.1-1.el6.x86_64.rpmFor example, this command installs the R 3.1.1 RPM on Oracle Linux x86-64 version 6:  rpm -i R-3.1.1-1.el6.x86_64.rpm To complete the Oracle R Distribution 3.1.1 installation, repeat this command for each of the 6 RPMs, resolving dependencies as required. Oracle R Distribution 3.1.1 is not yet officially certified with Oracle R Enterprise. Refer to Table 1-2 in the Oracle R Enterprise Installation Guide for supported configurations of Oracle R Enterprise components, or check this blog for updates. The Oracle R Distribution 3.1.1 binaries for Windows, AIX, Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86 will be available on OSS, Oracle's Open Source Software portal, in the coming weeks.

  • laptop suddenly became very slow

    - by Ieyasu Sawada
I have a compaq laptop. And I've been using it 2 years now. Then this day, it suddenly became very slow. It almost took 5 minutes from turning on to the log on screen. I click my username and it took 3 minutes to show the desktop. I click on my computer then properties to see if it is still showing 2 Ghz for the Core 2 duo processor. And 2gb for the memory. It took 10 minutes for all the information to show up. And its still 2gb and 2Ghz. So I may conclude that this is not a problem in memory or cpu. Its still running perfectly last night. And I have not seen signs of it failing. Things I already tried: Rebooting Shutdown then turn on again So how do I determine what causes this problem? How do I fix it?

  • SQL Server Connections Fall 2011 - Demos

    - by Adam Machanic
Today is the last day of the annual SQL Server Connections show in Vegas, and I've just completed my third and final talk. (Now off to find a frosty beverage or two.) This year I did three sessions: SQL302: Parallelism and Performance: Are You Getting Full Return on Your CPU Investment? Over the past five years, multi-core processors have made the jump from semi-obscure to commonplace in the data center. While servers with 16, 32, or even 64 cores were once an out-of-reach choice for all except the...(read more)

  • Could a computer act (dependably) as a wireless router for 200+ clients? [closed]

    - by awkwardusername
That is, I have a Core 2 Duo E7500 at 2.93GHz, with 2GB memory. I plan to install either Windows Server 2012 or Zeroshell 2.0RC1, and it also (planning to) includes two PCIe Wireless Card Adapters. It also has one ethernet port, and I will connect that to another machine which will be a Database and a Web Server. My plan is to have a corporate level wireless intranet with 200+ clients. I cannot afford to buy routers because I want to operate at zero costs as possible, utilizing my available resources. Is that plan plausible? Also, what minimum specs should my wireless card have? @SvenW: Oh, I meant corporate on the deployment level. I am still an undergraduate and this is more of an educational and expiremental work than an actual project. I got Windows Server 2012 for free though, and this isn't actually for commercial use.

  • What Interface Toolkit is being recommended for Ubuntu on Nexus7/Mobile Devices?

    - by Baggers
I understand this is a may be a very premature question given that the current build is for testing Ubuntu Core, but I have just bought a Nexus7 to join in with this Ubuntu on mobile adventure and can't help wanting to start writing some apps! I haven't really dabbled with either GTK or QT for touch apps yet and, having seen that Ubuntu TV is using Nux, I wondered what people on AskUbuntu-land would recommend. Hope someone out there know this! Cheers

  • VMware Fusion / New Machine / verify VMs?

    - by drewk
I just got a 15" MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM, 2.66 i7 and 500GB SSD. Very sweet and fast! My old machine was 2.66 Core 2 Duo. I used Migration Assistant to migrate my old MBP to the new. When I started VMware to run Windows and Ubuntu I got the message first This VM has been moved or copied to a new machine. Did you move or copy it? I answered Copied. Then I got the message this CPU is a different configuration than the machine that created the VM. You may get unpredictable results. I answered Open Anyway. Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu all seem to work OK, but how can I verify? Is there some form of test harness for a VM? I have had a VM degrade and become unusable with very catastrophic data loss (on Parallels...), so I am a bit paranoid. Thanks,

  • What are the tradeoffs involved in referencing Context in a library?

    - by C. Ross
Context is one of the core classes of Android, and many functions it contains are useful in Android library projects, particularly accessing configuration. What are the trade offs involved in accessing the Context in a library, either by injection or by subclassing Application in the library, and subclassing that in the application. Does this make the application brittle or introduce inappropriate coupling?

  • Does an LTS desktop get any updates after three years?

    - by Oli
In cleaning up an answer today, I noted the following: LTS desktops get updates for three years LTS servers get updates for five years An Ubuntu desktop is (essentially) a superset of server packages. So in the fourth and fifth year, if LTS Server gets Kernel updates*, are these also provided for LTS Desktop? What about other core-system stuff? I realise the Kernel is a little special because there is a -server variant but are updates pushed for -generic (et al) too?

  • Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student?

    - by Ayush
I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
