  • Why does an update from Apache 2.2 to 2.4 delete all configs?

    When updating apache 2.2 to apache 2.4 (for example with this package https://launchpad.net/~ondrej/+archive/apache2) all the configs are deleted. The normally used /etc/apache2/sites-available/default is now completely deleted, the "new" default file (000-default) has a totally different structure, so it's not even possible to recover by doing copy & paste work. Why does this happen and how to prevent this ?

    It's one thing to grab screenshots of web sites and return to them for design and interface ideas and inspiration. But increasingly I've found that when I want to examine something that previously caught my eye, the actual web site has since been altered, so I can no longer learn from the code. I wonder: is there a tool available that would allow me to save interfaces in a format that would retain the html/css? Thanks

    Hi, I'd like to start using S3 and EC2 to host some of my company's simpler websites. I would like to be able to identify all of the costs associated with running each site (instance run-time costs + storage + data transfers) so that the costs can be allocated (cross-charged) to business units in my company. Is it possible to identify all the costs associated with each site in this way if all of the sites are running on separate instances ? thanks

    Possible Duplicate: How do you do Load Testing and Capacity Planning for Web Sites I've seen tutorials saying they can run decent websites on 64MB RAM (Debian/Lighttpd/PHP/MySQL) however it's not clearly defined how much hits/traffic a "decent" site gets. Is there a rule of thumb on how much RAM a web server needs? To keep things simple, let's say you're running a site with static content and it's averaging at 100,000 hits per hour (HTML + images combined, no MySQL). How much RAM is the minimum requirement for that?

    I just compiled nginx v1.2.3 from source on a CentOS 6.3 server and am trying to use the ssl_prefer_server_ciphers directive, but I am getting an error nginx: [emerg] unknown directive "ssl_prefer_serfver_cipers" in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/application:5 I am not seeing anywhere that this directive depends on any specific versions of other libraries, or even specific versions of nginx. What could I be doing wrong here?

Our SEO specialist is under the impression that many larger corporations may have jQuery blocked in their proxies to prevent their users from visiting sites like Facebook.   • I killed my VPS with putting Firefox to reload the page after 1 second, now one of my domains is dead and gives a 504

    I have one domain on my VPS which I wanted to run a script a few hundred times on to simulate users, so I put a few Firefox tab on refresh every 1 second. Now that domain is dead, it just gives me a 504 every time I try to go to it, even though I restarted NGINX, PHP and I even shut the server on and off. All of my other sites on that VPS are Ok and running perfectly, just this one where I tried the reloading on. What can I do from here?

  • Nginx Load Balancer 403 error

    I am trying to install nginx as a load balancer with apache backends, so that when I point my sites to the nginx server it serves up the content from the apache backend. I have the apache configuration set up correctly on both (i.e when I go to the site on the apache servers it works great) but when I use the nginx load balancer as the site I get 403 error. I have no idea why as it isn't even accessing any files on the server, thusly there aren't any files to be forbidden access to.   • How to allow only specific directories to use htaccess?

    Currently in apache2.conf I have AllowOverride all set for /var/www which simply allows htaccess for all the sites on the server (which is Ubuntu, 9.04). However, I'd rather only allow overrides in each site root directory and nothing else. In other words, /var/www/site1, /var/www/site2, etc. can have a htaccess, but all other directories including /var/www and /var/www/site1/content cannot. Is there a way to do this without having to write a rule for every site on the server?

  • I'm having a hard time choosing a hosting provider...

    So, what hosts do you recommend? The problem is, I can't manage the server. I know there's options out there like slicehost and vps.net, but management doesn't come with those. All I need is a simple lamp stack that can easily scale. Stuff like cloud sites (rackspace) is too expensive (starts at $150/month). I only need something small for now. Suggestions?

I've gone through the threads on serverfault and I think I've tried every suggestion including: rewrite statements within location / index index.html at the server level, within location / and within static content moving node.js proxy statements to location ~ /i instead of within location / Obviously something is wrong somewhere else in my configuration.   • How can I develop for Safari 6 without buying a mac?

    I've always found that just developing in Windows, and using Safari for Windows has been sufficient. However, Safari 6 has now been released, and I've got at least one user who has contacted me, saying he's experienced problems with one of my sites on his new ipad. The trouble is that Safari for Windows only goes up to 5.1.7. Do I have to go out and buy a new mac/ipad/iphone in order to test my code, or is there another way?

Facebook stucks on static.ak.fbcdn.net Twitter stucks on a1.twimg.com Yahoo stucks on l.yimg.com On firefox I'm receiving Waiting for ...(any of those). I can access facebook only with SSL. Like https://facebook.com I ping them, only receive request timed out.

  • 403 Forbidden for web root on Apache on Mac OS X v10.7, but can access user directories

    When I access http://localhost/ I get 403 Forbidden, but if I access http://localhost/~username it serves up pages. Things I've tried: Checking error logs Swapping out with original httpd conf files Changing DocumentRoot to my user directory (after all that should work if I can access ~username) I've seen 30 plus Q&A sites that all point to people having trouble with user directories being forbidden. I have the opposite problem, and so I'm tearing my hair out here.

  • How to "Create Your Own Search Provider" in IE9 and later?

    We used to be able to add a custom search provider in Internet Explorer to search any site that put search words in the query string (such as in StackExchange sites). The page where that it was done was http://www.ieaddons.com/gb/createsearch.aspx However, this page now redirects to a generic IE Gallery page. When I upgraded from IE8 to IE9, my StackOverflow provider carried over, but I recently reset my browser settings and am not able to get it back. Can we easily create a custom search provider?
