  • Is the development stack of java/spring/hibernate/eclipse/tomcat/mysql riddled with config hacking?

    - by Blankman
From a M$ development perspective, using things like vs.net/c#/asp.net/asp.net mvc/sql server, things are pretty much smooth. (Obviously for someone coming from a microsoft background like me). Now I love the idea of open source, linux and terminal servering into the computer and doing things via the command line, no license issues really, etc. I've tried firing up eclipse etc., but I always seem to get stuck on some configuration issue or another. Does it get easier or is it just the territory when you are dealing with the java stack?

  • Best .NET Solution for Frequently Changed Database

    - by sestocker
I am currently architecting a small CRUD applicaton. Their database is a huge mess and will be changing frequently over the course of the next 6 months to a year. What would you recommend for my data layer: 1) ORM (if so, which one?) 2) Linq2Sql 3) Stored Procedures 4) Parametrized Queries I really need a solution that will be dynamic enough (both fast and easy) where I can replace tables and add/delete columns frequently. Note: I do not have much experience with ORM (only a little SubSonic) and generally tend to use stored procedures so maybe that would be the way to go. I would love to learn Ling2Sql or NHibernate if either would allow for the situation I've described above.

  • Netbeans has Realy Bad FTP support , Forces me to download all Files even before I can continue

    - by Vivek
Hello Friends , have started using Netbeans recently after using Aptana, phpdesigner and Notepad++ . I love Netbeans for it's speed and it has almost everything I want except for the fact that the FTP support is really Bad. To start working on a FTP server , I have to download all the files to my localhost first which is such a waste of bandwidth & if those files are many ie. 1000+ files then it's really annoying . I have tried mounting remote FTP as local filesystem in Windows and then using Netbeans to access it but that does'nt work out too .. If anybody using netbeans a lot for PHP development can guide me on this , then I would be highly obliged.. this trivial problem is keeping me from using this awesome IDE . Thanks & Regards .

  • Icon fonts vs images

    - by Miss A
My manager tells me not to use icon fonts on our websites, as it is another http request plus the extra kBs to download. Also because I would have to use content before for the font (I can't change the html), he prefers background images so it works in IE7. Personally I love the little things, so nice and crisp and resizeable! I get it if we only use a couple of icons on a website but if I would use, say 5 icons on a site - what do you guys think? Is it worth using an icon font or is he right thinking that it is not? I am just a sucker for anything new and exciting, and this year it is the retina display.

  • C++ Boost ASIO: how to read/write with a timeout?

    - by Stéphane
From reading other Stackoverflow entries and the boost::asio documentation, I've confirmed that there is no synchronous asio read/write calls that also provide an easy-to-use timeout as a parameter to the call. I'm in the middle of converting an old-school linux socket app with select(2) calls that employs timeouts, and I need to do more-or-less the same. So what is the best way to do this in boost::asio? Looking at the asio documentation, there are many confusing examples of various things to do with timers, but I'm quite confused. I'd love to see a simple-to-read example of this: Read from a socket, but wait for a maximum of X seconds after which the function either returns with nothing, or returns with whatever it was able to read from the socket before the timeout expired.

  • What is the best way to write faster on Vim using a non-english keyboard?

    - by Martín Fixman
I usually use Vim, and its great for the ability to do faster some actions than other editors. However, since I live in Argentina I have a Latin American keyboard, that makes everything in Vim pretty slower (to write / to search, I must press Shift+7). Since I don't want to be changing Keyboard layouts all the time (and its pretty difficult to get used to pressing symbols as in an English keyboard), I was wondering if there was a vim plugin (of .vimrc file) that may be useful for international users. Just for the sake of it, here's how the Latin American keyboard is laid out: By the way, I would love to go and buy an English keyboard, but unfortunately I use a Laptop.

  • Can I use RVM to maintain a single version of Ruby for all users?

    - by Trevor Burnham
I love RVM. I realize that the main use case for it is letting different users switch between different versions of Ruby. But let's say I'm deploying a Rails app to a server and I just want a single version of Ruby running. In particular, I want 1.9.2, which is a breeze to install with RVM but a pain without it. Is there a way that I can say "I want this to be the canonical Ruby installation for all users" (along with all of its gems) without having to create a bunch of symlinks by hand and change them every time I update to a newer Ruby release?

  • Working with version control on a Drupal/CMS project

    - by Jens Ljungblad
I was wondering how teams that develop sites using Drupal (or any other CMS) integrate version control, subversion, git or similar, into their workflow. You'd obviously want your custom code and theme files under version control but when you use a CMS such as Drupal a lot of the work consists of configuring modules and settings all of which is stored in the database. So when you are a team of developers, how do you collaborate on a project like this? Dumping the database into a file and putting that file under version control might work I guess, but when the site is live the client is constantly adding content which makes syncing a bit problematic. I'd love to know how others are doing this.

  • Deserializing different named xml nodes

    - by Andreas
Hi. Is there a way to convert different named xml nodes into one class when deserializing an XML Example XML: <items> <aaa>value</aaa> <bbb>value</bbb> </items> Normaly i would write: [XmlRoot("items")] class Items { [XmlElement("aaa")] public string aaa; [XmlElement("bbb")] public string bbb; } But now i would like to do something like this [XmlRoot("items")] class Items { [XmlElement("aaa")] [XmlElement("bbb")] public List<string> item; } Here I would love if "aaa" and "bbb" was added to the same list.

  • The Wheel Invention - Beneficial For Learning?

    - by Sarfraz
Hello, Chris Coyier of css-tricks.com has written a good article titled Regarding Wheel Invention. In a paragraph he says: On the “reinventing” side, you benefit from complete control and learning from the process. And on the very next line he says: On the other side, you benefit from speed, reliability, and familiarity. Also often at odds are time spent and cost. He is right in both statements I think. I really like his first statement. I do actually sometimes re-invent the wheel to learn more and gain complete control over what I am inventing. I wonder why people are so much against that or rather biased. Isn't there the benefit of learning and getting complete control or probably some other benefits too. I would love to see what you have to say about this.

  • I built my rails app with sqlite and without specifying any db field sizes, Is my app now foobared for production?

    - by Tim Santeford
I've been following a lot of good tutorials on building rails apps but I seem to be missing the whole specifying and validating db field sizes part. I love not needing to have to think about it when roughing out an app (I would have never done this with a PHP or ASP.net app). However, now that I'm ready to go to production, I think I might have done myself a disservice by not specifying field sizes as I went. My production db will be MySQL. What is the best practice here? Do I need to go through all of my migration files and specify sizes, update all the models with validation, and update all my form partial views with input max widths? or am I missing a critical step in my development process?

  • Architect desperately wants to use SOAP over JMS

    - by Aerosteak
Hello, I have used JMS in the past to build application and it works great. Now I work with Architects that would love to use the Spec : SOAP over Java Message Service 1.0. This spec seams overly complicated. I do not see many implementation (Beside the vendors pushing for the spec). Does anyone here is using this specification in a production environment? What is your main benefit of using this spec? Link: http://www.w3.org/TR/2009/CR-soapjms-20090604/

  • Is there an off the shelf CMS that can be used as a back end for smartphone travel guide apps?

    - by eamonncarey
I'm wondering if there's an off the shelf CMS available that is similar to something like Mobile Roadie - ie: it will allow you to create multiple versions of one application? I'm looking to develop some mobile travel guides for iPhone/Android/Blackberry etc, and rather than get a CMS built, I'd like to see if there's something out there is similar to Wordpress in that it will allow us to input text, images, Google Maps details, phone numbers, email addresses and potentially some audio/video content. If anyone knows of anything, I'd love to hear about it. Also, if you have any ideas regarding pricing, that would be extremely helpful! Thanks in advance for your assistance.

  • Ensuring uniqueness on a varchar greater than 255 in MYSQL/InnoDB

    - by Vijay Boyapati
I have a table which contains HTML entries for news pages. When I initially designed it I used URL as the primary key. I've learned the error of my ways because left-joining is super slow. So I want to redesign the table with an integer (id) primary key, but still keep the rows unique based on the URL. The problem is that I've found URLs longer than 255 characters, and MySQL isn't letting my create a key on the URL. I'm using an InnoDB/UTF8 table. From what I understand it's using multiple bytes per character with a limit of 766 bytes for the key (in InnoDB). I would really love suggestions on an elegant way of keeping the rows unique based on URL, while using an integer primary key. Thanks!

  • Learning C++ from AS3

    - by grey
I'm a decent AS3 programmer. I work in games, and that is my reason for programming. While there is much I can accomplish with Adobe AIR, my understanding at this point is that learning C++ is probably a good direction to take. I would learn a lot of valuable lower level programming if I needed it down the road, and I would have an easier time learning other C oriented languages. I see a lot of information for people looking to learn AS3 who know C++, but not the other way around. Why C++? Cross platform compatibility is important to me, so I'm not particularly interested in C# or Objective-C at this junction. I'm also aware of HaXe, and while I love the concept, after doing some research I'm worried about investing a lot of time into something so recent with limited learning resources and documentation. I'm looking for advice and resources (books, articles) related to this topic. Thanks in advance!

  • What kind of work benifits from OpenCL

    - by Daniel
Hey All First of all: I am well aware that OpenCL does not magically make everything faster I am well aware that OpenCL has limitations So now to my question, i am used to do different scientific calculations using programming. Some of the things i work with is pretty intense in regards to the complexity and number of calculations. SO i was wondering, maybe i could speed things up bu using OpenCL. So, what i would love to hear from you all is answers to some of the following [bonus for links]: *What kind of calculations/algorithms/general problems is suitable for OpenCL *What is the general guidelines for determining if some particular code would benefit by migration to OpenCL? Regards

  • Referencing a different project in the same assembly, different namespaces

    - by Redburn
    I have two projects : Menu and Module and they are both in the same namespace foobar. I am currently referencing the module project from the Menu project to open up certain controls on a tab control in my menu. However I need to launch a new control from one of my controls which is located in the Module project. When I try referencing the menu project, it does not show up in my intellisense when I try to reference it with a using. Am I doing something wrong logically here? Here is an example of what it is : Project Menu Public Void LaunchWPFControl(string pHeader,string pPath) { //Code goes here to launch a WPF control in the browser } Project Module //What I would love to do but doesn't work Using Menu; ... ... ... private void dgModule_MouseDoubleClick(object sender, MouseButtonEventArgs e) { Menu.LaunchWPFControl("Accounts","AccountsControl"); }

  • Checking for an "end of line" in a C-string

    - by Numerator
I would really love your help with the following problem: I want to get as an input from the user a maximum length of 30 chars string and check whether it contains an end of line. This is what I tried to write so far: int main(void) { int i; char* command = (char*)calloc(31, sizeof(char)); while (0 < 1) { scanf("%s", command); for (i = 0; i <= strlen(command); ++i) { if (command[i] == '\n') printf("here"); } if (strcmp(command, "quit") == 0) break; } The idea is to check whether the command given by the user as input is "legal" - that is of length < 31. when i run this code, it never prints "here" regardless of the length of input.

  • Twitter Streaming API - tracking exact multiple keywords in exact order

    - by Gublooo
Hey Guys, I'm just beginning to play with the Twitter Streaming API. If I specify $sc-setTrack(array('just bought from')); This will correctly pull only tweets that have all 3 keywords - but doesn't maintain the order. 1) I want the keywords to appear in the same order like "I just bought apple from itunes" but the above also returns tweets like "I bought some apples and just removed them from the bag" 2) Is there a way to specify the exact words say "NBA basketball" with nothing in between - in the sense I dont want tweets like this to be returned Watching basketball on NBA tv I just want tweets which contain the exact phrase to be returned like I love watching NBA basketball 3) Also is there a way to specify negative keywords Any tips if this is possible. Thanks

  • Retrieve Access Control List of Documents for Specific User on Google Docs?

    - by viatropos
I have a large website at www.mydomain.com. There are 1000 new documents per month and 100 new users per week lets say. I need to be able to programmatically do the following: user goes to www.mydomain.com/documents user sees list of all documents they have access to (not ALL of the docs) I know you can retrieve an ACL for each document individually. But is there a way to retrieve an ACL for each "user", a list of all the documents they have access to, in one HTTP request? Something like this, but for Docs (and not just for document "owners"): Retrieving only calendars that a user owns. I'd love to know, because it seems like I'd have to parse 10,000 document "entry" tags, find the ACL, see if user is in ACL... That seems crazy. What am I missing? Thanks!

  • Automatic images translation to 3d model

    - by farrakhov-bulat
I'm quite interested in automatic images translation to 3d models. Not really for commercial product, but from the point of possible academic research and implementation. What I'd like to achieve is almost transparent for user process of transformation series of images (fewer is better) to 3d model which might be shown in flash/silverlight/javafx or similar. Consider online furniture store with 3d models of all items in stock. Kinda cool to have ability to see the product in 3d before purchasing it. I managed to find a few pieces of software, like insight3d, but it couldn't be used in my case I guess. So, are there any similar projects or tips for me? If it would require to write that piece of software - I'd really love to dig into research on this field.

  • How do you add < or > to a summary tag in Visual studio?

    - by Tony
How do you add < (less than) or (greater than) to a summary comment in visual studio? I am in Visual Studio 2008. I have a generic method: public bool IsMemberProtected<T>(Expression<Func<T, object>> expression) Would love to have a summary tag of something like this /// <summary> /// Determines whether a member is protected. /// /// Usage: IsMemberProtected<ExampleType>(x => x.Member) /// </summary> But when I do that, the tooltip for the property no longer works when a developer hovers over the method in code to view the summary tag. Thoughts?

  • Best way in Python to determine all possible intersections in a matrix?

    - by ssweens
So if I have a matrix (list of lists) of unique words as my column headings, document ids as my row headings, and a 0 or 1 as the values if the word exists in that particular document. What I'd like to know is how to determine all the possible combinations of words and documents where more than one word is in common with more than one document. So something like: [[Docid_3, Docid_5], ['word1', 'word17', 'word23']], [[Docid_3, Docid_9, Docid_334], ['word2', 'word7', 'word23', 'word68', 'word982']], and so on for each possible combination. Would love a solution that provides the complete set of combinations and one that yields only the combinations that are not a subset of another, so from the example, not [[Docid_3, Docid_5], ['word1', 'word17']] since it's a complete subset of the first example. I feel like there is an elegant solution that just isn't coming to mind and the beer isn't helping. Thanks.

  • Is there an API available that, given text, returns a list of companies with their ticker symbols?

    - by smo7002
Ideally I would love to extract exactly what Google Finance's Get Quote functionality does with the predictive search. That's really all that I'm looking for. I don't want to store the data, I just want to be able to search company names/ticker symbols so that I can get the correct symbol. I already have specialized quote functionality in place. Also, the search functionality needs to be intuitive. I've looked through Google Finance API but haven't seen exactly what it is that I'm looking for. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

  • errorPage directive works, but error-page in web.xml doesn't?

    - by danb
I get jsp exceptions causing a forward to my error page when I put this at the top of my JSPs... <%@ page errorPage="/error.page" %> but when I try to do it globally with web.xml like so: <error-page> <exception-type>java.lang.Throwable</exception-type> <location>/error.page</location> </error-page> I just get a blank page... I've also tried putting /error.jsp in the location element.. but no love with that either.. I am triggering an exception with a jsp that just contains this: <%if(true)throw new RuntimeException("test exception");%> I do see the exception in the console from tomcat but I just can't get that error page to show without a directive on every jsp... am I missing something simple here?
