  • Why use buffers to read/write Streams

    - by James Hay
Following reading various questions on reading and writing Streams, all the various answers define something like this as the correct way to do it: private void CopyStream(Stream input, Stream output) { byte[] buffer = new byte[16 * 1024]; int read; while ((read = input.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0) { output.Write(buffer, 0, read); } } Two questions: Why read and write in these smaller chunks? What is the significance of the buffer size used?

  • What happens when I instantiate class in Python?

    - by Konstantin
Could you clarify some ideas behind Python classes and class instances? Consider this: class A(): name = 'A' a = A() a.name = 'B' # point 1 (instance of class A is used here) print a.name print A.name prints: B A if instead in point 1 I use class name, output is different: A.name = 'B' # point 1 (updated, class A itself is used here) prints: B B Even if classes in Python were some kind of prototype for class instances, I'd expect already created instances to remain intact, i.e. output like this: A B Can you explain what is actually going on?

  • Meaning of message "operations coalesced during safepoint"

    - by elec
A java app runs with the following flag: -XX:+PrintSafepointStatistics, and then produces the following line on the standard output console: 2 VM operations coalesced during safepoint Anyone cares to explain what this mean ? More generally - is there a Java reference manual somewhere detailling all JVM flags, their use and, most importantly, the expected output, with relevant explanations ?

  • easy hex/float conversion

    - by yeus
I am doing some input/output between a c++ and a python program (only floating point values) python has a nice feature of converting floating point values to hex-numbers and back as you can see in this link: http://docs.python.org/library/stdtypes.html#additional-methods-on-float Is there an easy way in C++ to to something similar? and convert the python output back to C++ double/float? This way I would not have the problem of rounding errors when exchanging data between the two processes... thx for the answers!

  • What's the difference between single and double quotes in Objective-C?

    - by Alex Mcp
I'm working through a book exercise to generate some random serial number, and here's my function: NSString *randomSerialNumber = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%c%c%c%c%c", '0' + random() % 10, 'A' + random() % 26, '0' + random() % 10, 'A' + random() % 26, '0' + random() % 10]; This works and has an output like: 2J6X7. But before, the 0s and As I had wrapped in double quotes, and an example output was 11764iÒ˜. What did I do wrong my first time around, and why did using single quotes fix it?

  • Styling an If Else Statement

    - by ThatMacLad
    I know that it's not possible to style any given PHP but I do know that it is possible to style the output HTML that the PHP provides you with. I was wondering if there was any method available for me to use that would enable me to style the output from my IF ELSE statement. if ($result != false) { print "Your entry has successfully been entered into the blog."; }

  • Natural Language date and time parser for java

    - by Pranav
Hey guys, I am working on a Natural Language parser which examines a sentence in english and extracts some information like name, date etc. for example: "Lets meet next tuesday at 5 PM at the beach." So the output will be something like : "Lets meet 15/09/2009 at 1700 hr at the beach" So basically, what i want to know is that is there any framework or library available for JAVA to do these kind of operations like parsing dates from a sentence and give a output with some specified format. Regards, Pranav

  • C#: How to replace "-" with " -" only when it's not preceded by "e"?

    - by MaDDoX
I imagine I should use Regex for that but I still scratch my head a lot about it (and the only similar question I found wasn't exactly my case) so I decided to ask for help. This is the input and expected output: Input: "c-0.68219,-0.0478 -1.01455-0.0441 0.2321e-4,0.43212" Output:"c -0.68219,-0.0478 -1.01455 -0.0441 0.2321e-4,0.43212" Basically I need either commas or spaces as value separators, but I can't break the exponential index (e-4). Maybe do two successive replacements?

  • How does msbuild decide whether it needs to rebuild a C# library or not?

    - by Peter Mounce
Per subject, how does msbuild decide whether it needs to rebuild a library (ie, invoke csc), or not, when it is run against a C# project file? I imagine (but want to confirm): If there's no output directory, rebuild (duh :) ) If a C# file has changed, rebuild If an included file marked copy-always has changed, rebuild or is it smart enough to not rebuild, but just copy the file to the existing output? If an included file marked copy-if-newer has changed, rebuild same question as above

  • What does a forward slash before a pipe in cmd do to remove the line ending of an echo?

    - by user66001
This code: @echo off echo/|set /p ="Executing backup...." echo/|set /p =" backup procedure" ... came from Echoing in the same line and produces the below output in a cmd window: Executing backup....backup procedure However, I cant seem to find an explanation through google on what the forward slash does to the ¿pipe? to cause set's output to be echoed to the console / stdout If anyone could also suggest a good website for learning more about cmd / cmd programs' features like this, it would be appreciated.

  • Is it possible to create a patch using a set of changelists?

    - by webXL
Problem: 2 projects shared trunk and were updating some of the same files. Now one project needs to be released, so a new branch was created from a checkpoint before the projects started. I have a list of just my changelist numbers from the mainline. Using that I can generate a list changed files and diff output using a script with a series of 'p4 describe #' commands. Can I reformat that output and apply it to the new branch somehow?

  • bash shell date parsing, start with specifc date and loop through each day in month

    - by Joe Stein
Hi, I need to create a bash shell script starting with a day and then loop through each subsequent day formatting that output as %Y_%m_d I figure i can submit a start day and then another param for the number of days. My issue/question is how to set a DATE (that is not now) and then add a day. so my input would be 2010_04_01 6 my output would be 2010_04_01 2010_04_02 2010_04_03 2010_04_04 2010_04_05 2010_04_06 Thanks
