How do I find out if new versions of installed packages exist without installing them via aptitude in non-interactive mode? Is there anything comparable to the MacPorts port outdated command?
I have an old Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. Still mostly works, but the clock battery has died so everytime I power it on I need to go into the BIOS and set the proper clock time. From what I've been able to tell, replacing this battery is non-trivial, but I haven't found a clear answer.
How do I replace the clock battery? And how do I buy a replacement?
Windows Server 2003, IIS6.
We're trying to deploy a non-MVC ASP.NET web application as a subdirectory of an MVC application.
However the ASP.NET application in the subdirectory is failing with the message "Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.Mvc, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified." which is bizarre because it's not an MVC application.
I'm using myphpadmin to manage the databases and I'm new to SQL in general. Am I suppose to keep an open anonymous user on localhost so things like drupal can access mySQL? It seems like having a non-passworded root on my server's hostname is retarded but I don't know what I'm doing with this in general. The user who's name starts with a b is the one I use to login and do things like make a database.
We're sending ~60k emails to non-local addresses with sendmail and I manually set the -f flag to [email protected].
This all works fine and dandy when I limit my PHP script to 5000 addresses. If I remove the limitation, sendmail ingnores the parameters and sends all emails with a reply-to and return-path of [email protected].
I'm sleeping in between each email for 500ms, that should not be the problem.
I am using Windows 7. I have a non-admin user on my computer and I want to apply on him user policies from the Microsoft Management Console.
How can I disable the computer button from the Start menu through user policies? or something else?
I need to convert a very large latex project (made up of many .tex and style files) into .html (or something similarly non-.pdf).
Can someone recommend a quality converter program?
Preferably, one that is:
available on linux (specifically Ubuntu)
actively maintained
Thanks!
I've read some conflicting articles on Macbooks and memory upgrades. Some say you have to buy the "special" Mac memory (bulls$%t), others say manufacturers like Partriot and Ocz will work fine. My Macbook (non-pro) is about 6 mos old with it's 2 GB of memory (SO-DIMM 1066MHz DDR3). Does anyone have any definitive information of what will work?
Thanks!

How well does Windows 7 MCE support ClearQAM (no-cablecard, no HD), and are there any guidelines for which capture cards work best with it?
Also, I have an old laptop with a 2 Ghz Pentium M with 1 GB of RAM. I believe that this will be able to handle 1 stream (as it currently does with non-QAM content under XP MCE. Would it also be able to handle 2 streams?
I wrote a setup script to install my prefered programs and settings after I got a new server.
apt-get install git
git clone http://[email protected] .vim
ln -s .vimrc .vim/vimrc
...
But if something wrong happens during setup, how can I interrupt the setup script, and log the error(s)? For example, if github server is down, it's obviously useless to create a symbolic link to non-existed vimrc.
(or you have a better approach to initialize a server?)
According to the Unicorn docs, there are different binaries for Rails apps and other Rack apps:
non-Rails Rack applications
In APP_ROOT, run:
unicorn
for Rails applications (should work for all 1.2 or later versions)
In RAILS_ROOT, run:
unicorn_rails
They seem to also take the same command-line parameters. But Rails is built on top of rack, so I don't understand why this dichotomy is required. Is there any reason you can't just use unicorn for Rails apps?
I have an application (.exe) which I am running via a scheduled task on Windows Server 2008 R2.
The task runs fine but when the .exe returns a non-zero exit code the task is still successful when it should fail.
I get this message:
Task Scheduler successfully completed
task "\CustomerDataSourceETL - Whics"
, instance
"{a574f6b4-2614-413c-8661-bc35eaeba7cd}"
, action
"E:\applications\CCDB-ETL\CustomerDataSourceETLConsole.exe" with return code 214794259.
How can I get task scheduler to detect that the return code is 0 and fail the task?
I have this very strange problem with a website. The site works normal when coming from a webbrowser which is non-mobile. But when trying to reach the site via a mobile device (tried different browsers) it doesn't get to the website.
The only error I see is:
This website is not available and the message is:
DNS_PROBE_POSSIBLE
Does anyone know where I should look for the problem. The website is based on Joomla.
The Url of the site is: http://bit.ly/1bOToII
HI Folks, i have an Inspiron E1505 with Windows 7 and Intel GMA 945 Chipset. I connected a Dell SP2309W 23" monitor via VGA to the laptop but it is not achieving it's original resolution but is stuck at 1024 x 768. Also it is detected as a Generic Non PNP Display Device. I upgraded my display driver to latest version and it fully supports Windows 7. What more can i do?
Any help.
Thanks a Lot in advance
I am aware that the shared mailbox feature is an exclusive microsoft feature in exchange and does not work on any non microsoft products.
I am trying to create a workaround so am looking for a way to automatically export a calendar by schedule or any other means.
Does anybody know any good Outlook plugins that would do something like that?
it must export either in csv or iCal or some kind of other readable format.
What I need is to create a couple of websites, each one with only one user, which is allowed to send mails from any address @ his own domain.
Example:
Site foo.com would have an user foo, which can send mails from [email protected].
Currently, when the user logins to Usermin, the default 'from' field is example-dns.net (editable)
I want it to show an editable field for the user part, and @foo.com (non editable)
So how can I do this? Is there some way to automate this?

Hi,
The windows XP sigverif tool is useful for identifying non-signed executables, but does not seem to be amenable to scripting -- is there a command line equivalent?
I manage a campground wifi network with an average of 10 - 60 active users. I have encountered issues where the router starts acting flaky (failing to assign DHCP or failing to pass traffic) without any clear warning (low cpu utilization, etc). I upgraded the router a couple times and ended up with a Netgear ProSafe VPN router that seems to be handling the traffic. The interesting thing is that the Netgear has lower specs than the Buffalo router it replaced, indicating the issue is with the DD-WRT firmware. While I'll be pursuing this issue on the dd-wrt forums, I need a way to test routers.
My vision is having 1-2 computers connected on the LAN side and 1-2 computers connected on the WAN side. I want the LAN computers to be generating various type of traffic and connections, as well as requesting DCHP addresses.
A few notes:
The wireless aspect should be a non-issue. Most clients would connect to a wireless bridge and come into the router through a network cable.
I had a monitoring server with Nagios running check_dhcp against the router. This server was connected directly by a network cable, eliminating wifi bridges and other devices from the equation.
This question is somewhat related, but not exactly: Load testing wireless LANs I am going to look at IxChariot.
While I'd ideally like to use a 1 computer on each side running Linux and preferably free software, I can entertain running Windows, multiple computers, or non-free software.
Total bandwidth doesn't seem to be the issue. I can transfer large files all day. Even on the busiest days, the users seemed to only pull ~5Mbps. There is very little "LAN to LAN traffic" and most of it might never have reached the main router.
The issue I need to test for seems to be tied to active users, or more appropriately, active sessions.
I know active users or active clients is a meaningless term from a router standpoint and wouldn't mind having more appropriate terms to use.
Summary: I need a way to test a routers ability in handling traffic from a large number of clients. My current strategy is to purchase a router, deploy it, and see how it fails in the live environment.
I see two burn methods in the options menu of all disc burning programs: "Track at once" and "Disc at once". What is the difference between these two methods? Which one do you recommend for regular data recording?
Edit: Please provide a non-copy-paste answer which briefly describes the differences and pros.
Is there any emulator that allows to treat all non-PS/2 mouse activities as if I had one? I.e. if I have a usb mouse but it could be reached by interacting with PS/2 port.
I'd like to enable forced ASLR for all DLLs on Windows. Is this safe?
Background: ASLR is an important security mechanism that helps defend against code injection attacks. DLLs can opt into ASLR, and most do, but some DLLs have not opted into ASLR. If a program loads even a single non-ASLRized DLL, then the program doesn't get the benefit/protection of ASLR. This is a problem, because there are a non-trivial number of DLLs that haven't opted into ASLR.
For instance, it was recently revealed that Dropbox injects a DLL into a bunch of processes, and the Dropbox DLL doesn't have ASLR turned on, which negates any ASLR protection they otherwise would have had. Unfortunately, there are many other widely used DLLs that haven't opted into ASLR. This is bad for system security.
Microsoft provides several ways to turn on ASLR for all DLLs, even ones that haven't opted into ASLR:
On Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, you can enable "Force ASLR" in the registry.
On all Windows versions, you can use Microsoft's EMET tool and enable EMET's "Mandatory ASLR" option.
These methods are possible because all DLLs are compiled as position-independent code and they can be relocated to a random location even if they haven't opted into ASLR. These options will ensure that ASLR is turned on, even if the developers of the DLL forgot to opt into ASLR. Thus, forcing on ASLR systemwide may help system security.
In principle, turning on forced ASLR could potentially break a poorly-written DLL, so there is some risk of breakage. I'm interested in finding out just significant this risk is. I have the suspicion that this kind of breakage might be extremely rare. Here's what I've been able to find:
Microsoft has done compatibility testing with several dozen widely used applications. The only one they found where Mandatory ASLR causes problems is Windows Media Player. All the other applications continue working fine. (See pp.39-41 of this document.)
I've seen some anecdotal reports that enabling "Mandatory ASLR"/"Force ASLR" is fine and unlikely to cause problems.
CERT reports that AMD and ATI video drivers used to crash if you enabled forced ASLR, but their latest drivers have now fixed this problem. They don't show any other drivers with this problem.
A forum post from Microsoft shows no other applications with compatibility problems if ASLR is forced on, as of 2011. A user reports that borderlands.exe, a video game by Gearbox Software, crashes if you turn on mandatory ASLR.
What else should I know? Is it relatively safe to turn on Force ASLR / Mandatory ASLR systemwide to harden the secuity of my system, or will I be in for a world of pain and broken applications? How significant is the risk of compatibility problems and broken applications?
I have English Windows 7 Professional with Hungarian keyboard language installed.
The English keyboard layout works as expected, but for the Hungarian layout some kind of "accent combining" is activated.
The effect of this ^+o becomes ô, ^+a becomes â, etc.
This is not helpful at all, since the accented characters of Hungarian are already mapped to keys, but it's really annoying because I have to type a non-combining character to actually get ^.
Is there any way to turn this "feature" off?
