  • Java InputStream encoding/charset

    - by Tobbe
    Running the following (example) code import java.io.*; public class test { public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { byte[] buf = {-27}; InputStream is = new ByteArrayInputStream(buf); BufferedReader r = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(is, "ISO-8859-1")); String s = r.readLine(); System.out.println("test.java:9 [byte] (char)" + (char)s.getBytes()[0] + " (int)" + (int)s.getBytes()[0]); System.out.println("test.java:10 [char] (char)" + (char)s.charAt(0) + " (int)" + (int)s.charAt(0)); System.out.println("test.java:11 string below"); System.out.println(s); System.out.println("test.java:13 string above"); } } gives me this output test.java:9 [byte] (char)? (int)63 test.java:10 [char] (char)? (int)229 test.java:11 string below ? test.java:13 string above How do I retain the correct byte value (-27) in the line-9 printout? And consequently receive the expected output of the System.out.println(s) command (å).

  • Git: Create a branch from unstagged/uncommited changes on master

    - by knoopx
Context: I'm working on master adding a simple feature. After a few minutes I realize it was not so simple and it should have been better to work into a new branch. This always happens to me and I have no idea how to switch to another branch and take all these uncommited changes with me leaving the master branch clean. I supposed git stash && git stash branch new_branch would simply accomplish that but this is what I get: ~/test $ git status # On branch master nothing to commit (working directory clean) ~/test $ echo "hello!" > testing ~/test $ git status # On branch master # Changed but not updated: # (use "git add <file>..." to update what will be committed) # (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory) # # modified: testing # no changes added to commit (use "git add" and/or "git commit -a") ~/test $ git stash Saved working directory and index state WIP on master: 4402b8c testing HEAD is now at 4402b8c testing ~/test $ git status # On branch master nothing to commit (working directory clean) ~/test $ git stash branch new_branch Switched to a new branch 'new_branch' # On branch new_branch # Changed but not updated: # (use "git add <file>..." to update what will be committed) # (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory) # # modified: testing # no changes added to commit (use "git add" and/or "git commit -a") Dropped refs/stash@{0} (db1b9a3391a82d86c9fdd26dab095ba9b820e35b) ~/test $ git s # On branch new_branch # Changed but not updated: # (use "git add <file>..." to update what will be committed) # (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory) # # modified: testing # no changes added to commit (use "git add" and/or "git commit -a") ~/test $ git checkout master M testing Switched to branch 'master' ~/test $ git status # On branch master # Changed but not updated: # (use "git add <file>..." to update what will be committed) # (use "git checkout -- <file>..." to discard changes in working directory) # # modified: testing # no changes added to commit (use "git add" and/or "git commit -a") Do you know if there is any way of accomplishing this?

  • How to keep your unit tests simple and isolated and still guarantee DDD invariants ?

    - by ian31
DDD recommends that the domain objects should be in a valid state at any time. Aggregate roots are responsible for guaranteeing the invariants and Factories for assembling objects with all the required parts so that they are initialized in a valid state. However this seems to complicate the task of creating simple, isolated unit tests a lot. Let's assume we have a BookRepository that contains Books. A Book has : an Author a Category a list of Bookstores you can find the book in These are required attributes : a book has to have an author, a category and at least a book store you can buy the book from. There's likely to be a BookFactory since it is quite a complex object, and the Factory will initialize the Book with at least all the mentioned attributes. Now we want to unit test a method of the BookRepository that returns all the Books. To test if the method returns the books, we have to set up a test context (the Arrange step in AAA terms) where some Books are already in the Repository. If the only tool at our disposal to create Book objects is the Factory, the unit test now also uses and is dependent on the Factory and inderectly on Category, Author and Store since we need those objects to build up a Book and then place it in the test context. Would you consider this is a dependency in the same way that in a Service unit test we would be dependent on, say, a Repository that the Service would call ? How would you solve the problem of having to re-create a whole cluster of objects in order to be able to test a simple thing ? How would you break that dependency and get rid of all these attributes we don't need in our test ? By using mocks or stubs ? If you mock up things a Repository contains, what kind of mock/stubs would you use as opposed to when you mock up something the object under test talks to or consumes ?

  • Should I really be expected to work more than 40 hours a week just because I am 'salaried developer'

    - by Ryan
My boss says that I shouldn't be counting hours, but I am only getting paid for a full time job 40 hours per week. I don't get it. I could be using the rest of the hours in my day to run a small side business and get more income. However I have noticed other people just working and working whatever hours to hit the deadline. How is this fair? Of course the argument was 'if you worked more and increased your value then you will get more money'. A friend I regard as one of the smartest people I know (engineered his own sonar system for example) said that you should never work beyond what you are getting paid for. Thoughts?

  • Is it good to continue as MFC developer or good to know .NET as well?

    - by AKN
Normally people say MFC is little clumsy. It makes UI developement slightly difficult to maintain since it has lot of auto generated code. It has good architecture (doc/view) but is not transparent like Win32 programming to understand how window program works in the background. So with this situation, is it good to extend the exposure on MFC programming or better to switch to .NET since for faster UI design with ease in maintenance. How globally companies are looking into MFC as a technology for UI developments. Are they comfortable in supporting their developers to continue with MFC or looking for changing their development technology.

  • Jquery .wrap and first-child

    - by Johann
Hi, I'm in a situation in which I need to use .wrap and :first-child. This is what I am doing: <script>$("a").wrap("<div class='category-wrapper'></div>");</script> <script>$("div.category-wrapper:first-child").addClass("first");</script> This should render a div.category-wrapper outside a link and then add a "first" class to every first div.category-wrapper. The output is: <div class="category-wrapper"><a href="#">Test</a></div> Which is good! However, I am not able to get the "first-child" to work (it doesn't adds the "first" class). If I use it somewhere else it works so I am sure it's something related to the dynamic rendering of the previous element. Any help is appreciated! Thanks! Sample output would be: <div class="category-wrapper"><a href="#">Test #1</a></div> <div class="category-wrapper"><a href="#">Test #2</a></div> <div class="category-wrapper"><a href="#">Test #3</a></div> <div class="category-wrapper"><a href="#">Test #4</a></div> Desired output: <div class="category-wrapper first"><a href="#">Test #1</a></div> <div class="category-wrapper"><a href="#">Test #2</a></div> <div class="category-wrapper"><a href="#">Test #3</a></div> <div class="category-wrapper"><a href="#">Test #4</a></div> However, I am not able to make it work.

  • Java Package - To create a button and import one when needed.

    - by Zopyrus
This is more like a package/import test. We'll start with my base folder at .../javaf/test.java My goal is to create subcategory and create a class with a button that I can import to test.java when I need a button. I feel like I've done it right, I know that the button doesn't do anything as of now, but I just want to make the whole thing work and expand the code thereafter. So here goes - This is test.java import paket.*; // importing classes from subcategory paket! import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.*; import java.awt.event.*; import java.util.*; public class test { public test() { JFrame myFrame; JPanel myPanel; myFrame = new JFrame("Hello FramWorld"); myPanel = new JPanel(); // Here I want to add the object created in paket/myButts.java // The problem is how to make these two lines work. myButts myButton = new myButts(); myPanel.add(myButton); myFrame.setVisible(true); myFrame.getContentPane().add(myPanel, BorderLayout.CENTER); myFrame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE); myFrame.pack(); } public static void main(String args[]) { new test(); } } And here is my .../javaf/paket/myButts.java package paket; // Here is the package function (ought to work like a link) import javax.swing.*; import java.awt.*; import java.awt.event.*; // This class should only create a button. public class myButts { public myButts() { JButton myButt = new JButton(); } } I've compiled myButts.java with no errors. But then I compile test.java and it gives me the following error: test.java:19: cannot find symbol symbol : method add(paket.myButts) location: class javax.swing.JPanel myPanel.add(myButton); Thanks for reading, Z

  • What Conferences would you recommend for a UI / Frontend Web Developer in the next 6 months?

    - by rsturim
Hello, I'm looking for a strong conference(s) to attend in the next 6 months. I may be able to attend one or two. I'm looking for something surrounding Frontend Web Development -- web standards, CSS3, html5, javascript, UX, and usability are strong interests of mine. I'm also starting to consider diving deep into designing for Mobile devices. I've discovered these 2 conferences so far -- they look very good -- but am I missing anything HUGE and/or obvious? An Event Apart - Wash DC (http://aneventapart.com/2010/dc/) Web Directions North - Altanta (http://north.webdirections.org/) Thoughts?

  • Is there a smart web developer language skill combination?

    - by Cryo
I'm no newbie to programming, but I'm making the move to a career in web development, and I've noticed that so many job postings have different combinations of skill requirements: (PHP, C#, XML, XHTML/CSS, ASP, .NET, jQuery, YUI, Joomla, Ruby, Perl, Python, Java, Javascript... the list goes on.) As of now, I've started learning XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, PHP, and mySQL, but with so many combinations, I want to plan ahead to have a marketable combination of skills as early on as possible. Am I on the right path? What is vital for a marketable web programmer's arsenal? Thanks for your thoughts.

  • How to use two parameters pointing to the same structure in one function ?

    - by ZaZu
Hey guys, I have my code below that consits of a structure, a main, and a function. The function is supposed to display two parameters that have certain values, both of which point to the same structure. The problem I dont know how to add the SECOND parameter onto the following code : #include<stdio.h> #define first 500 #define sec 500 struct trial{ int f; int r; float what[first][sec]; }; int trialtest(trial *test); main(){ trial test; trialtest(&test); } int trialtest(trial *test){ int z,x,i; for(i=0;i<5;i++){ printf("%f,(*test).what[z][x]); } return 0; } I need to add a new parameter test_2 there (IN THE SAME FUNCTION) using this code : for(i=0;i<5;i++){ printf("%f,(*test_2).what[z][x]); How does int trialtest(trial *test) changes ? and how does it change in main ? I know that I should declare test_2 as well, like this : trial test,test_2; But what about passing the address in the function ? I do not need to edit it right ? trialtest(&test); --- This will remain the same ? So please, tell me how would I use test_2 as a parameter pointing to the same structure as test, both in the same function.. Thank you !! Please tell me if you need more clarification

  • Cant print contents of a custom file

    - by ZaZu
Hello, Im trying to scan contents from a random file into an array in a structure. Then I want to print those contents on screen. (NOTE: The following code is from a bigger program, this is just a sample, but all structures and arrays used are needed as declared ) The contents of the file being tested are simply: 5 4 3 2 5 3 4 2 #include<stdio.h> #define first 500 #define sec 500 struct trial{ int f; int r; float what[first][sec]; }; int trialtest(trial *test); int trialdisplay(trial *test); main(){ trial test; trialtest(&test); trialdisplay(&test); } int trialtest(trial *test){ int z,x,i; FILE *inputf; inputf=fopen("randomfile.txt","r"); for(i=0;i<5;i++){ fscanf(inputf,"%f",&(*test).what[z][x]); } fclose(inputf); return 0; } int trialdisplay(trial *test){ int i,z,x; printf("printing\n\n\n"); for (i=0;i<10;i++){ printf("%f",(*test).what[z][x]); } return 0; } The problem is, I get this error whenever I run the code .. I cant really understand whats going on : Any suggestions ? Thanks alot !

  • New desktop GUI developer; can choose any platform...

    - by alexantd
I'm planning a client-server product for a tiny, low-volume, high-cost vertical market. One of the components of the product will be a desktop application, simple to moderate in complexity, for data entry and uploading to a central server from remote PCs and/or Macs via SOAP. The server is a Java web app. Customers will be choosing their platform (Windows or Mac) based on what the client app runs on, so my options are wide-open here. However, I will be developing on a Mac and have a strong allergy to MS-specific technologies (sorry). The app will not need to run on any non-desktop-computer devices and I have total freedom to say it will support X but not Y or Z without any negative consequences (quite the luxury, to be sure). I have a lot of experience in server-side development but very little in desktop GUI stuff, and am evaluating my options on the client - basically what do I want to commit to learning over the next 6+ months. I have server-side Java experience as well as a brief dabble in iPhone development, which went OK. Overall I'm looking for: Ease of learning & development IDE support Healthy surrounding ecosystem (libraries, tools, help, etc.) Quality documentation My options as I see them, in rough order of how I'm currently mentally ranking them: Java Swing Cocoa Java SWT JavaFX Adobe AIR XULRunner Am I leaving anything out?

  • What are some good usability guidelines an average developer should follow?

    - by Allain Lalonde
I'm not a usability specialist, and I really don't care to be one. I just want a small set of rules of thumb that I can follow while coding my User Interfaces so that my product has decent usability. At first I thought that this question would be easy to answer "Use your common sense", but if it's so common among us developers we wouldn't, as a group, have a reputation for our horrible interfaces. Any Suggestions?

  • MySQL developer here -- Nesting with select * finicky in Oracle 10g?

    - by John Sullivan
I'm writing a simple diagnostic query then attempting to execute it in the Oracle 10g SQL Scratchpad. EDIT: It will not be used in code. I'm nesting a simple "Select *" and it's giving me errors. In the SQL Scratchpad for Oracle 10g Enterprise Manager Console, this statement runs fine. SELECT * FROM v$session sess, v$sql sql WHERE sql.sql_id(+) = sess.sql_id and sql.sql_text <> ' ' If I try to wrap that up in Select * from () tb2 I get an error, "ORA-00918: Column Ambiguously Defined". I didn't think that could ever happen with this kind of statement so I am a bit confused. select * from (SELECT * FROM v$session sess, v$sql sql WHERE sql.sql_id(+) = sess.sql_id and sql.sql_text <> ' ') tb2 You should always be able to select * from the result set of another select * statement using this structure as far as I'm aware... right? Is Oracle/10g/the scratchpad trying to force me to accept a certain syntactic structure to prevent excessive nesting? Is this a bug in scratchpad or something about how oracle works?

  • As a PHP developer thinking of making Perl a secondary strong suit, what do I need to know?

    - by Hexagon Theory
I consider myself quite fluent in PHP and am rather familiar with nearly all of the important aspects and uses, as well as its pratfalls. This in mind, I think the major problem in taking on Perl is going to be with the syntax. Aside from this (a minor hindrance, really, as I'm rather sold on the fact that Perl's is far more readable), what are some key differences you think I should make myself aware of prior to taking on the language?

  • Comparing strings that contain formatting in C#

    - by Finglas
I'm working on a function that given some settings - such as line spacing, the output (in string form) is modified. In order to test such scenarios, I'm using string literals, as shown below for the expected result. The method, using a string builder, (AppendLine) generates the said output. One issue I have run into is that of comparing such strings. In the example below, both are equal in terms of what they represent. The result is the area which I care about, however when comparing two strings, one literal, one not, equality naturally fails. This is because one of the strings emits line spacing, while the other only demonstrates the formatting it contains. What would be the best way of solving this equality problem? I do care about formatting such as new lines from the result of the method, this is crucially important. Code: string expected = @"Test\n\n\nEnd Test."; string result = "Test\n\n\nEnd Test"; Console.WriteLine(expected); Console.WriteLine(result); Output: Test\n\n\nEnd Test. Test End Test

  • Icons: How does a developer with no design skill make his/her application icons look pretty?

    - by Martin
I probably spend far too much time trying to make my visual interfaces look good, and while I'm pretty adept at finding the right match between usability and style one area I am hopeless at is making nice looking icons. How do you people overcome this (I'm sure common) problem? I'm thinking of things like images on buttons and perhaps most important of all, the actual application icon. Do you rely on third party designers, in or out of house? Or do you know of some hidden website that offers lots of icons for us to use? I've tried Google but I seem to find either expensive packages that are very specific, millions of Star Trek icons or icons that look abysmal at 16x16 which is my preferred size on in-application buttons. Any help/advice appreciated.
