  • What sense does asynchronous IO make if the thread is blocked anyway (see example)

    - by codymanix
Hello, I found an example for async ftp upload on msdn which does the following (snippet): // Asynchronously get the stream for the file contents. request.BeginGetRequestStream( new AsyncCallback (EndGetStreamCallback), state ); // Block the current thread until all operations are complete. waitObject.WaitOne(); The thing what I do not understand here is, which sense does asynchronous IO make if the thread is blocked anyway with an explicit waithandle. I always thought the advantage of asynchronous IO was that the user/programm does not have to wait.

  • SynchronizationContext and Bookmarks in WF4

    - by DBatisse
I am running workflows under asp.net and using SynchronizationContext to make the page "wait" for the workflow. Here is how I run the workflow instance under asp.net: var workflowApplication = new WorkflowApplication(activity); SynchronizationContext syncContext = SynchronizationContext.Current; workflowApplication.Completed = delegate { syncContext.OperationCompleted(); }; workflowApplication.SynchronizationContext = syncContext; syncContext.OperationStarted(); workflowApplication.Run(); In one of the activities I use a bookmark. Now I want the page processing to continue whenever I call CreateBookmark. I tried calling SynchronizationContext.Current.OperationCompleted() before setting the bookmark but that crushes asp.net site when the workflow resumes and completes (I think the workflow instance calls OperationCompleted again when it completes and the error raises) How can I work with bookmarks under Asp.Net, any ideas?

  • What are some methods to debug Javascript inside of a UIWebView?

    - by bpapa
I'm trying to figure out why something with Javascript isn't working inside of a UIWebView. To my knowledge, there is no way to set a breakpoint inside of XCode for a js file. No problemo, I'll just go back to 2004 and use alert statemen-- oh wait they don't seem to work inside of a UIWebView either! The only thing I could think of is by exporting my HTML And JS files to my desktop and then just doing my debugging inside of Safari. And that works! But of course, the bug I'm fighting with in the UIWebView doesn't occur in Safari. Are there any other ways for debugging inside of a UIWebView, or any tricks that I can use akin to using the old-school alert method?

  • C# Winforms: How to display a loading form?

    - by Martijn
I have a grid and when a row is double clicked a form is loaded. However a lot of data must be loaded, so I'd like to display a simple form with the text 'loading, please wait..'. And when all loading is finished, the form must disappear. This is what I have right now, but it doesn't work: Code that invokes the form with lots of data: FormWithLotData form = new FormWithLotData(); form.ShowDialog(this); Constructor of FormWithLotData: // Show load form FormIsLoading frm = new FormIsLoading(); _CloseLoadForm closeForm = new _CloseLoadForm(frm.Close); System.Threading.Thread thread = new System.Threading.Thread(frm.Show); thread.Start(); InitializeComponent(); this.Visible = false; LoadAllData(); this.Visible = true; // Close load form Invoke(closeForm); Hope you can help me out.

  • Jing + swfobject 2.2 = big video in small popup

    - by consultutah
I am trying to use swfobject 2.2 to display an swf, but the swf won't scale to fit the div that I'm putting it in. You can see what I've got here by clicking on the "Take the product tour" button. Here is the code to generate both the impromptu popup and the sfobject: $.prompt("<div id='flashContent'>Please wait...</div>", { prefix: "tour", top: "2%", buttons: {} }); var flashvars = { scale: "showAll" }; var params = { scale: "showAll"}; var attributes = {}; swfobject.embedSWF("/content/tour.swf", "flashContent", "800", "600", "9.0.0", "expressInstall.swf", flashvars, params, attributes); If, after the flash loads, I right-click and select "Show All", it appears correct. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I've verified that it doesn't matter whether I'm using impromptu or not. Thank you,

    - by DomingoSL
I have a upload file form, when you hit Submit it send the file to my server, but it takes a while, in the mean time i need to tell the user wait in order to get the file uploaded, because he can press Submit again because there is no menssage to prevent him. • MSBuild Build Sequence

    - by pm_2
I got this from here. <ItemGroup> <SolutionToBuild Include="$(SolutionRoot)\path\MySolution.sln /> <SolutionToBuild Include="$(SolutionRoot)\Scribble\scribble.sln" /> <SolutionToBuild Include="$(SolutionRoot)\HelloWorld\HelloWorld.sln" /> <SolutionToBuild Include="$(SolutionRoot)\TestProject1\TestProject1.sln" /> </ItemGroup> It says that the sequence of the build is determined by the order above. So, for example, MySolution would be built before scribble. However, is this safe if scribble is dependant on MySolution? If MySolution and scribble are changed simultaneously, will the build wait for MySolution to be completely compiled before moving to the next project?

  • Non modal "status" form

    - by David Jenings
At the beginning of a section of C# code that could take several seconds to complete, I'd like to display a non modal form with a label that just says, "Please wait..." WaitForm myWaitForm = null; try { // if conditions suggest process will take awhile myWaitForm = new WaitForm(); myWaitForm.Show(); // do stuff } finally { if (myWaitForm != null) { myWaitForm.Hide(); myWaitForm.Dispose(); myWaitForm = null; } } The problem: the WaitForm doesn't completely display before the rest of the code ties up the thread. So I only see the frame of the form. In Delphi (my old stomping ground) I would call Application.ProcessMessages after the Show() Is there an equivalent in C#? Is there a canned "status" form that I can use in situations like this? Is there a better way to approach this? Thanks in advance. David Jennings

  • SIP servlets, chatserver

    - by Senne
I'm trying to get a SIP servlet chat server working, together with the textclient found here. When I use 2 clients to send messages to eachother (peer to peer), everything goes well. But when I use one or more clients together with my server, I have to wait exactly 32 seconds before the server picks up any new messages in the doMessage() method. I'm using Netbeans together with Sailfin as my SIP server. Is there some kind of limitation or configurable delay or timeout between requests or responses in Sailfin I'm looking over? I can post the server code, if needed. Thanks

  • errorCode=003001; statusCode=403; source=Throttling Policy

    - by ihoka
Lately, in our app using IPP data services, we have encountered these errors from time to time. <RestResponse xmlns="http://www.intuit.com/sb/cdm/v2"> <Error RequestId="49f7926a9aa84cfc8289534801dee72d"> <RequestName>ErrorRequest</RequestName> <ProcessedTime>2012-12-07T10:10:59+00:00</ProcessedTime> <ErrorCode>3001</ErrorCode> <ErrorDesc>message=This client has made too many consecutive requests over too short a period of time. Please wait a short amount of time before attempting to submit again; errorCode=003001; statusCode=403; source=Throttling Policy</ErrorDesc> </Error> </RestResponse> Can't find any reference to a "Throttling Policy" or error code "3001" anywhere in the IPP documentation. Any help is appreciated.

  • Objective-C : Trouble with file download

    - by Holli
I ran in a bit of trouble downloading files with Objective-C. I use the download decideDestinationWithSuggestedFilename from Apples documentation page. http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/cocoa/conceptual/URLLoadingSystem/Tasks/UsingNSURLDownload.html As long as I want to download just one file it works fine but I want to download an array for files one by one. The problem starts with the second file. Right now my code will trigger the next download itself from the downloadDidFinish Method. Then I will get an unrecognized selector sent to instance error. For me it looks like the NSURLDownload that just finished the download is still in use somehow. Release is called but the must be a problem. If I just put an NSBeep in the downloadDidFinished Method and trigger the next file download manually it works fine. Looks like I have to wait a while till I can start the next download. I know this question is a bit vague but maybe someone got an idea.

  • Best Practices - Stored Procedure Logging

    - by hgulyan
If you have a long running SP, do you log somehow it's actions or just wait for this message? "Command(s) completed successfully." I assume, that there can be plenty solutions on this subject, but is there any best practice - a simple solution that is frequently used? EDIT I've found an interesting link on this subject http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/brettk/archive/2006/09/21/12391.aspx Article describes using a log table, but there's an issue The logging procedure must be executed outside of any transaction I can't call that insert outside, because of cursor that I use and insert a line to that table on every row. Any ideas?

  • Should Java IOException have been an unchecked RuntimeException?

    - by Derek Mahar
Do you agree that the designers of Java class java.io.IOException should have made it an unchecked run-time exception derived from java.lang.RuntimeException instead of a checked exception derived only from java.lang.Exception? I think that class IOException should have been an unchecked exception because there is little that an application can do to resolve problems like file system errors. However, in When You Can't Throw An Exception, Elliotte Rusty Harold claims that most I/O errors are transient and so you can retry an I/O operation several times before giving up: For instance, an IOComparator might not take an I/O error lying down, but — because many I/O problems are transient — you can retry a few times, as shown in Listing 7: Is this generally the case? Can a Java application correct I/O errors or wait for the system to recover? If so, then it is reasonable for IOException to be checked, but if it is not the case, then IOException should be unchecked so that business logic can delegate handling this exception to a separate system error handler.

  • UDP Socket Client in .NET

    - by Betamoo
I use UDP Sokckts in my client application. Here are some code snippets: SendIP = new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Parse(IP), port); ReceiveIP = (EndPoint)(new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, 0)); socket = new Socket( AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Dgram, ProtocolType.Udp); socket.Bind(ReceiveIP); And to Receive (while(true)): byte[] data = new byte[BUFFERSIZE]; int receivedDataLength = socket.ReceiveFrom(data, ref ReceiveIP); string s= Encoding.ASCII.GetString(data, 0, receivedDataLength); I am doing an infinite while on the receive, there are other things to be done in the while, even if nothing is received.. I want to check if there are actually available data then receive else do not wait.. (Note the current receive method waits until the server sends a message)

  • Which offer to pick?

    - by Shawn
OK. This is kinda silly, but I'd really like to hear what you guys say. Here is the thing: I used to be an php developer and started looking for jobs 3 weeks ago and now I got 2 offers at hand. If I took the first one what I do would be 100% in PHP - simply dev works on a ecommerce project. If I go with the second one, the projects would be in python which I didn't have too much experiences on and is kinda exited about the new stuff I'm going to learn. But wait, the first offer gives more money(1k plus) and that's why I'm still hesitating and troubling you guys.) If you were me, which one would you pick? I know there could be other factors to be considered like 'which position is closer to your home so you could take good care of your dog', well let's forget about those things for now.

  • How to create a Task Scheduler App.

    - by Mike
I have been task with (ha) creating an application that will allow the users to schedule a command line app we have with a parameter. So the command line app takes an xml and "runs it" So bottom line I either need to create a windows service or learn how to interact with the Task Scheduler service already running on the box (version 1 Xp /2003) At first I though it would be easy have a service run and when a job is submitted, calculate the time between now and run and set up a timer to wait that amount of time. This is better then checking every minute if it's time to run. Were I hit a wall is I relized I do not know how to communicate with a running windows service. Except maybe create a file with details and have the service with a file watcher to load the file and modify the schedule. So the underlying questions are how can I execute this psedo code from client serviceThatIsRunning.Add(Job) Or ineracting with the task schedule or creating .job files using c# 3.5

  • Python/X11: find out if user switches virtual desktops

    - by Philip
Hello everyone, I'm looking for a way to determine if the user switches virtual desktops under X11. I'm using Python with X11 libraries and PyGTK. I found some working examples in C, but I lack the expertise to translate them into Python, and I read the source code of several X11 pager applications (fbpanel, pypanel), but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Do I have to register for a signal? Using X11 or GTK? Do I have to busy-wait? I'm completely new to both X11 and GTK, so any hints/help would be greatly appreciated. Greets, Philip PS: My current efforts can be found here.

  • DotnetNuke redirect

    - by X-Dev
our client needs to shortcuts to particular pages We need to redirect non existent urls like http://site.com/promotion1 to the actual URL similar to http://site.com/promotions/promotion1/tabid/799/language/en-AU/Default.aspx ... I've sent a list of appropriate DNN modules to our client but it may take them forever to get back to me. In the mean time they still submitting requests to us to create redirects for them. if there's no cost involved then i wont have to wait for them to get back to me. so I'm looking for a Quick and free way to enable the clients to set these up on this own. I've looked at: http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=242&PackageID=3302 http://www.ventrian.com/Resources/Projects/FriendlyUrls.aspx http://www.codeproject.com/kb/aspnet/dnn2url_rewrite.aspx But haven't had much luck in the small amount of time i have available. Has anyone got some suggestions on how to achieve our goal with either the above resources or maybe some additional resource i haven't found yet? (DNN v4.9)

  • It is okay to migrate to Asp.NET 4.0 now?

    - by Tarik
Okay today, as most of you noticed Framework 4.0 has been released. I've been working on a project which is being built on framework 3.5. Since I want to use dynamic keyword and most of the asp.net features like Tableless Menu Control, ClientIDMode and clean web.config etc. I am kinda urging to migrate the unfinished project to 4.0 but I am little hesitating about that. Some times I think it is way better to wait for SP1. So what do you think about it? You guys will migrate to unfinished projects or will still hang out with 3.5 for a while. Thanks.

  • Switching from web to desktop development

    - by Dziamid
Being a web developer (php, symfony, doctrine) for 2 years now, I was recently asked by a friend to come up with a desktop solution. So I developed a project, installed a LAMP on his machine and he is mostly happy using it now. But I'm not. It just doesn't seem right to wait for a server response from a localhost. Obviously php isn't suited for desktop development. So, my question is: what language \ framework would you advice a php programmer if he was going to develop a desktop application (something that you can install, that has it's own gui, but utilizes the similar concepts of web apps: css, javascript, orm). I would like to bring up Python as a possible answer to my question. Does anyone have an experience of developing a desktop app with Python, utilizing an ORM and(or) HTML-based GUI?

  • Easiest way to retrofit retry logic on LINQ to SQL migration to SQL Azure

    - by Pat James
I have a couple of existing ASP .NET web forms and MVC applications that currently use LINQ to SQL with a SQL Server 2008 Express database on a Windows VPS: one VPS for both IIS and SQL. I am starting to outgrow the VPS's ability to effectively host both SQL and IIS and am getting ready to split them up. I am considering migrating the database to SQL Azure and keeping IIS on the VPS. After doing initial research it sounds like implementing retry logic in the data access layer is a must-do when adopting SQL Azure. I suspect this is even more critical to implement in my situation where IIS will be on a VPS outside of the Azure infrastructure. I am looking for pointers on how to do this with the least effort and impact on my existing code base. Is there a good retry pattern that can be applied once at the LINQ to SQL data access layer, as opposed to having to wrap all of my LINQ to SQL operations in try/catch/wait/retry logic?

  • Rx: Piecing together multiple IObservable web requests

    - by McLovin
Hello, I'm creating multiple asynchronous web requests using IObservables and reactive extensions. So this creates observable for "GET" web request: var tweetObservalue = from request in WebRequestExtensions.CreateWebRequest(outUrl + querystring, method) from response in request.GetResponseAsync() let responseStream = response.GetResponseStream() let reader = new StreamReader(responseStream) select reader.ReadToEnd(); And I can do tweetObservable.Subscribe(response => dosomethingwithresponse(response)); What is the correct way of executing multiple asynchronous web requests with IObservables and LINQ that have to wait until other requests have been finished? For example first I would like to verify user info: create userInfoObservable, then if user info is correct I want to update stats so I get updateStatusObservable then if status is updated I would like create friendshipObservable and so on. Also bonus question, there is a case where I would like to execute web calls simultaneously and when all are finished execute another observable which will until other calls are finished. Thank you.
