• Help with a simple incremental backup script

  I'd like to run the following incomplete script weekly in as a cron job to backup my home directory to an external drive mounted as /mnt/backups #!/bin/bash # TIMEDATE=$(date +%b-%d-%Y-%k:%M) LASTBACKUP=pathToDirWithLastBackup rsync -avr --numeric-ids --link-dest=$LASTBACKUP /home/myfiles /mnt/backups/myfiles$TIMEDATE My first question is how do I correctly set LASTBACKUP to the the the directory in /backs most recently created? Secondly, I'm under the impression that using --link-desk will mean that files in previous backups will not will not copied in later backups if they still exist but will rather symbolically link back to the originally copied files? However, I don't want to retain old files forever. What would be the best way to remove all the backups before a certain date without losing files that may think linked in those backups by currents backups? Basically I'm looking to merge all the files before a certain date to a certain date if that makes more sense than the way I initially framed the question :). Can --link-dest create hard links, and if so, just deleting previous directories wouldn't actually remove linked file? Finally I'd like to add a line to my script that compresses each newly created backup folder (/mnt/backups/myfiles$TIMEDATE). Based on reading this question, I was wondering if I could just use this line gzip --rsyncable /backups/myfiles$TIMEDATE after I run rsync so that sequential rsync --link-dest executions would find already copied and compressed files? I know that's a lot, so many thanks in advance for your help!!

  I need to implement time zones in a very large and old Delphi system, where there's a central SQL Server database and possibly hundreds of client installations around the world in different time zones. The application already interacts with the database by only using the date/time of the database server. So, all the time stamps saved in both the database and on the client machines are the date/time of the database server when it happened, never the time of the client machine. So, when a client is about to display the date/time of something (such as a transaction) which is coming from this database, it needs to show the date/time converted to the local time zone. This is where I get lost. I would naturally assume there should be something in SQL to recognize the time zone and convert a DateTime field dynamically. I'm not sure if such a thing exists though. If so, that would be perfect, but if not, I need to figure out another way. This Delphi system (multiple projects) utilizes the SQL Server database using ADO components, VCL data-aware controls, and QuickReports (using data sources). So, there's many places where the data goes directly from the database query to rendering on the screen, without any code to actually put this data on the screen. In the end, I need to know when and how should I get the properly converted time? There must be a standard method for this, and I'm hoping SQL Server 2008 R2 has this covered...

• Advice for Storing and Displaying Dates and Times Across Different Time Zones

  A common question I receive from clients, colleagues, and 4Guys readers is for recommendations on how best to store and display dates and times in a data-driven web application. One of the challenges in storing and displaying dates in a web application is that it is quite likely that the visitors arriving at your site are not in the same time zone as your web server; moreover, it's very likely that your site attracts visitors from many different time zones from around the world. Consider an online messageboard site, like ASPMessageboard.com, where each of 1,000,000+ posts includes the date and time it was made. Imagine a user from New York leaves a post on April 7th at 4:30 PM and that the web server hosting the site is located in Dallas, Texas, which is one hour earlier than New York. When storing that post to the database do you record the post's date and time relative to the visitor (4:30 PM), the relative to the web server (3:30 PM), or some other value? And when displaying this post how do you show that date and time to a reader in San Francisco, which is three hours earlier than New York? Do you show the time relative to the person who made the post (4:30 PM), relative to the web server (3:30 PM), or relative to the user (1:30 PM)? And if you decide to store or display the date based on the poster's or visitor's time zone then how do you know their time zone and its offset? How do you account for daylight savings, and so on? • How to build Gantt chart from a set of Redmine tickets without filling dates in all of them?

  Redmine 1.1.1 I've created a set of tickets for a new project. In each issue I filled Subject, Description and Estimated time fields. I also filled blocks/blocked by dependencies in Related issues. But the Gantt chart for this project is empty (that is, it contains all the tasks, but does not contain any "bars" for them). I need to get a Gantt chart (or any other visual representation) to show to other project members. I'd hate to type all that information again into OpenProj. Is there a way to get a serviceable Gantt chart from the Redmine? Update: In the answers below I read that to get working Gantt chart I have to input start date and due date manually for each issue. I believe that this information should be inferred automatically from start date of first ticket (first — depenency-wise), estimated time of each ticket, dependency graph, resource assignment and working hours calendar. Just as it happens in any minimally sane Gantt chart project management tool. To enter this information by hand and to keep it up-to-date manually as the project evolves is insane waste of time. Is there a way to generate Gantt chart from the set of Redmine tickets without filling in all this information manually? (Solutions involving data export + import in sane tool or involving existing plugins are perfectly acceptable.)

  Ultimately you want the browser to cache things like Flash components, Silverlight XAP files, and images to avoid users having to download them each time they hit a page.  But during development it's very useful to NOT have things cached so you are always looking at the most up-to-date file.  You can always turn off caching on your browser, but if you use your browser for daily browsing then its not the greatest option.  To avoid caching we would always just slap a randomly generated GUID to the back of the URL of any items we didn't want to cache (e.g. http://someserver.com/images/image.png?15f073f5-45fc-47b2-993b-fbaa781b926d).  It worked well, but you had to remember to remove the random GUID when it went to production. However, on a GimmalSoft project we recently implemented someone showed me a better way that didn't need to be removed from production code - just slap the last modified date of the file on the end of the URL (or something generated from the modification date).  This was kind of genius approach because it gives you the best of both world.  If you modify the file, the browser goes out and gets the newest version.  If you don't modify the file, it has the cached copy.  Very helpful!  The only down side is that you do have to read the modification date from the file, which does technically take some time.

  ExtendedDateChooser class is great solution for simple event calendar used in my flex project. Problem in that calendar is text events are missing when month is changed. Is there updateCompleted event in Actionscript just like in dateChooser flex component?   I am very new to git. I have a .gitignore in the my working folder. *.jpg *.gif *.png system/* */Zend/* .idea/*.* Well, I did git init and then git add *. At this it worked fine and ignored the above files. But when I did some changes, ran the same command it puts the ignored files into staging area. The reason why I am using git add * is because I work on many files and adding each file would be a overkill.   Hi, I am trying to parse an xml file using XmlReader but although I am getting a return from the xml file for the (commission) node for some reason I am getting an empty SimpleXMLElement Object returned as well. I don't know if its something to do with while loop,switch or something I missed in the parse setup. • how would you debug this javascript problem?

  I've been travelling and developing for the past few weeks. The site I'm developing was running well. Then, the other day, i connected to a network and the page 'looked' fine, but it turns out the javascript wasn't running. I checked firebug, and there were no errors, as I was suspecting that maybe a script didn't load (I'm using the google api for jQuery and jQuery UI, as well as loading google maps api and fbconnect). I would suspect that if the issue was with one of these pages not loading I would get an error, and yet there was nothing. Thinking maybe i didn't connect properly or something, i reconnected to the network and even restarted my computer, as well as trying to run the local version. I got nothing. The local version not running also hinted to me that it was the loading of an external javascript which caused the problem. I let it pass as something strange with that one network. Unfortunately now I'm 100s of miles away. Today my brother sent me an e-mail that the network he was on at the airport wouldn't load my page. Same issue. Everything is laid out properly, and part of the layout is set in Javascript, so clearly javascript is running. he too got no errors. Of course, he got on his plane, and now he is no longer at the airport. Now the site works on his computer (and i haven't changed anything). How on earth would you go about figuring out what happened in this situation? That is two of maybe 12 or so networks. But I have no idea how i would find a network that doesn't work (and living in a small town, it could be difficult for me to find a network that doesn't work). Any ideas? The site is still in Dev, so I'd rather not post a link just yet (but could in a few days). What I can see not working is the javascript functions which are called on load, and on click. So i do think it is a javascript issue, but no errors. This wouldn't be as HUGE an issue if I could find and sit on one of these networks, but I can't. So what would you do? I didn't change anything, and I got to a different network and everything worked fine.

• Unable to install Xdebug

  I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up? • Alien deletes .deb when converting from .rpm

  I'm trying to convert .rpm to .deb using alien. sudo alien -k libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.rpm Alien says that: libtetra-1.0.0-2.i386.deb generated But when I check the folder - there is just original .rpm and no .deb. Also - I can see that for a split second there is a .deb file in a folder. so it looks like alien create .deb and deletes it right away. I suspect that it's maybe because I run 64 bit os and package is 32? Can somebody explain why alien deletes .deb automatically?
