  • Operating system scheduler question

    - by ual
I recently asked myself: If a program, like Mozilla Firefox for example, is started - the control must be somehow given to it. But when the program crashes, why doesn't my whole system crash like in early Windows version? How can Windows take back the control from the program, or even not give it to it fully? (Note: This is not my homework; I go to school but in my informatics class are really only guys that would answer with "Can I eat that?" when I ask them about kernels. Same with my teacher.)

  • What algorithm should I use for encrypting and embedding a password for an application?

    - by vfclists
What algorithm should I use for encrypting and embedding a password for an application? It obviously is not bullet proof, but it should be good enough to thwart someone scanning the database with a hex editor, or make it hard for someone who has the skills to use a debugger to trace the code to work out, either by scanning for the encrypted password, or using a debugger to run through the decryption code. Object Pascal would be nice. /vfclists

  • Visual C++/CLI "An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in"

    - by JennyWong
Hi, I have a game I am making, it is giving me this message... "An unhandled exception of type 'System.StackOverflowException' occurred in game.exe" To explain...I have a 2D array with 9 different opening moves and I am getting a random number to use as the array reference to retrieve the details needed for a move... you may get the same move again - but that's illegal. the move may be illegal for other reasons too So to try and fix this, I am calling the function again from within the function. The error occurs very randomly Is this bad practise to call a function from within itself? What would be a better way to randomly row from a 2D array, AND if it isn't accept to get another one.... Or better still, how can I retrieve a random LEGAL move?

  • How to receive packets on the MCU's serial port?

    - by itisravi
Hello, Consider this code running on my microcontroller unit(MCU): while(1){ do_stuff; if(packet_from_PC) send_data_via_gpio(new_packet); //send via general purpose i/o pins else send_data_via_gpio(default_packet); do_other_stuff; } The MCU is also interfaced to a PC via a UART.Whenever the PC sends data to the MCU, the *new_packet* is sent, otherwise the *default_packet* is sent. Each packet can be 5 or more bytes with a pre defined packet structure. My question is: 1.Should i receive the entire packet from PC using inside the UART interrut service routine (ISR)? In this case, i have to implement a state machine inside the ISR to assemble the packet (which can be lengthy with if-else or switch-case blocks). 2.Detect a REQUEST command (one byte)from the PC in my ISR set a flag, diable UART interrupt alone and form the packet in my while(1) loop by polling the UART?

  • Adjusting for compass wrap around in a navigation application

    - by chris12892
I have a application where I am guiding a vehicle on compass headings and I am having an issue when the vehicle is crossing from 360 degrees to 0 degrees. In this case, there are no smarts in the control loop to compute that the nearest way to turn to follow a heading. For example, if the vehicle is instructed to follow a heading of 360 degrees, it will inevitably drifts a few degrees to ether side. If it drifts over to 0+ degrees, the control loop will go nuts and try to steer the vehicle all the way around to get it to 360 degrees again. Is there a graceful way to deal with this? The way the navigate function is written, I use an external PID controller class and I calculate the heading like this: lock (steering) { if (!Engaged) { return; } double mv = 90 + Trim + pidController.CalculateCorrection(flyHeading, currentHeading); steering.Degree = mv; } Thanks!

  • Scrum for Team System 2010 - How to use story points instead of Hours

    - by dretzlaff17
I have installed TFS 2010 using the Scrum for Team System v3. The work item templates want you to enter a Project Backlog Item that includes story points, then you need to add linked tasks as a child of the PBI. It is at the task level where you can assign team individuals, update estimated hours left, etc. What is the importance of the Story Points used at the PBI item if individual tasks are using hours? Has anyone customized this template so that the child work item tasks use story point burn downs instead of hours? Also, I would be nice to have the total number of story points from each individual task roll up into the PBI item as a read only field for total story points. Thanks for your time.

  • Why does GetTextFace always return "system"?

    - by user545142
I am trying to get the font of controls in other applications. When I try WM_GETFONT, it returns 0. This my code: [DllImport("User32.DLL")] public static extern IntPtr SendMessage(IntPtr hWnd, int Msg, int wParam, int lParam); IntPtr fx = SendMessage(button1.Handle, 0x31, 0, 0); When I use GetTextFace with a button, it always returns "system". This is my code: StringBuilder Buff = new StringBuilder(256); IntPtr dc = GetDCEx(button1.Handle, IntPtr.Zero, DeviceContextValues.Window |DeviceContextValues.Cache | DeviceContextValues.ClipSiblings | DeviceContextValues.IntersectRgn); IntPtr hfont = GetTextFace(dc, 256, Buff); Of course I'm sure I changed the font type. How can I solve this problem? I am using C# under Windows 7.

  • O'Reilly book clarification on 2d linear system

    - by Eric
The Oreilly book "Learning openCV" states at page 356 : Quote Before we get totally lost, let’s consider a particular realistic situation of taking measurements on a car driving in a parking lot. We might imagine that the state of the car could be summarized by two position variables, x and y, and two velocities, vx and vy. These four variables would be the elements of the state vector xk. Th is suggests that the correct form for F is: x = [ x; y; vx; vy; ]k F = [ 1, 0, dt, 0; 0, 1, 0, dt; 0, 0, 1, 0; 0, 0, 0, 1; ] It seems natural to put 'dt' just there in the F matrix but I just don't get why. What if I have a n states system, how would I spray some "dt" in the F matrix?

  • University System Automation, how the internal system of a university works?

    - by Zia ur Rahman
Hay dear! Suppose we want to make a software , we want to automate the system of university. Suppose a student apply in the university for a certain course, now the question is where the application form of the student will go and what process will be done on this form and then what is the next stage of this form and why it will go to the next stage? Now I hope you have got my point. I need information from the enrollment of a student to its pass out. Or provide a state transition diagram or Data flow diagram. I will be very thankful.

  • System.Linq.Dynamic and DateTime

    - by Matthew Hood
I am using System.Linq.Dynamic to do custom where clauses from an ajax call in .Net MVC 1.0. It works fine for strings, int etc but not for DateTime, I get the exception cannot compare String to DateTime. The very simple test code is items = items.Where(string.Format(@" {0} {1}{2}{1} ", searchField, delimiter, searchString)); Where searchField will be for example start_date and the data type is DateTime, delimiter is " (tried with nothing as well) and searchString will be 01-Jan-2009 (tried with 01/01/2009 as well) and items is an IQueryable from LinqToSql. Is there a way of specifying the data type in a dynamic where, or is there a better approach. It is currently already using some reflection to work out what type of delimiter is required.

  • Lightweight Relational database for BlackBerry OS 4.7

    - by Pavel
Hey guys, I'm writing an app for BlackBerry OS 4.7 and would greatly benefit from having a lightweight relational database such as SQLite that my application can use to store data locally on the device. SQLite is coming out with 5.0, which is still in beta. Can anyone recommend any other alternatives that permit commercial use? Additional information: - Concurrent access not required - Transactions not required Thanks in advance :-)

  • LINQ to Entites: How should I handle System.InvalidOperationException when checking for existance of

    - by chris
I have a many-to-one relationship that users can edit via checkboxes. PK of Foo is ID, and fid contains the id from the checkbox. I'm checking to see if an element exists with: Foo ent; try { ent = ctx.Foo.First(f => f.ID == fid); } catch (System.InvalidOperationException ioe) { ent = new Foo(); } It seems to me that I should be able to do this without throwing an exception. What would be the best way to do this?

  • Initialize generic object from a System.Type

    - by CaptnCraig
I need to create a generic type, but I do not know the type at compile time. I would like to do this: Type t = typeof(whatever); var list = new List<t> this won't compile, because t is not a valid type. But it does know all about a valid type. Is there a way to dynamically create the generic list from a System.Type like this? I may need reflection, and that's ok, I am just a bit lost here.

  • Detect file system changes on Samba share with Java on Windows

    - by GHad
Hi, for a recent project I need to detect file system changes on a mapped Samba share from java on windows: Creates, updates and removes. At the moment I am using a folder poll that maintains a list of files and their modified timestamp to look for events. But my problem is that this folder poll only peeks into the folder at certain times (every 10 seconds for example), so an updated file can be updated twice between two polls without recognizing. Is there any way to get events from windows inside Java whenever a file event occours on that mappep Samba share? Thanks!

  • Sorting 1 million 8-digit numbers in 1MB of RAM

    - by Favourite Chigozie Onwuemene
I have a computer with 1M of RAM and no other local storage. I must use it to accept 1 million 8-digit decimal numbers over a TCP connection, sort them, and then send the sorted list out over another TCP connection. The list of numbers may contain duplicates, which I must not discard. The code will be placed in ROM, so I need not subtract the size of my code from the 1M. I already have code to drive the ethernet port and handle TCP/IP connections, and it requires 2k for its state data, including a 1k buffer via which the code will read and write data. Is there a solution to this problem?

  • pass custom environment variables to System.Diagnostics.Process

    - by Mike Ruhlin
I'm working on an app that invokes external processes like so: ProcessStartInfo startInfo = new ProcessStartInfo(PathToExecutable, Arguments){ ErrorDialog = false, RedirectStandardError = true, RedirectStandardOutput = true, UseShellExecute = false, CreateNoWindow = true, WorkingDirectory = WorkingDirectory }; using (Process process = new Process()) { process.StartInfo = startInfo; process.Start(); process.BeginErrorReadLine(); process.BeginOutputReadLine(); process.WaitForExit(); return process.ExitCode; } One of the processes I'm calling depends on an environment variable that I'd rather not require my users to set. Is there any way to modify the environment variables that get sent to the external process? Ideally I'd be able to make them visible only to the process that's running, but if I have to programmatically set them system-wide, I'll settle for that (but, would UAC force me to run as administrator to do that?) ProcessStartInfo.EnvironmentVariables is read only, so a lot of help that is...

  • Is it ok to return a reference of a function scope static variable?

    - by kartik
I wanted to know if that has any ill effects under any circumsatnce. For ex: Ex1: void* func1() { void* p_ref = NULL; //function scope static variable static int var1 = 2; p_ref = &var1; return p_ref; } Ex2: //file scope static variable static int var2 = 2; void* func2() { void* p_ref = NULL; var2 = 3; p_ref = &var2; return p_ref; } So in the above two cases what is the difference apart from the fact that var1 is function scope and var2 is file scope. Thanks in advance.

  • Determining the load on a particular core in a multicore processor

    - by S.Man
In a multicore processor, there are ways to tell the particular application to run in either single core or 2 cores or 3 cores. During such scenarios, how will a scheduler be able to determine the load(number of threads) on a particular core in a multicore processor and accordingly distribute(balance) the load(allocate threads) across the various cores ?
