  What could be the reason I am getting a SharpDX NotImplemented Exception? SharpDX.SharpDXException: HRESULT: [0x80004001], Module: [General], ApiCode: [E_NOTIMPL/Not implemented], Message: Not implemented at SharpDX.Result.CheckError() at SharpDX.MediaFoundation.MediaFactory.Startup(Int32 version, Int32 dwFlags) at SharpDX.MediaFoundation.MediaManager.Startup(Boolean useLightVersion) this is on windows 8 desktop. the same code runs fine on windows 7.

• What's the best way to stop multiple instances of a Windows app being launched?

  Many Windows apps (like Skype or MSN for instance) don't let you start multiple instances, rather trying to run it a 2nd time just leaves the existing version running. Is this typically done in some simple way - the start-menu shortcut is a 'wrapper' app around the main app - or is there some registry magic you can do to delegate the problem to Windows itself? Specifically dealing with Win32 here (unmanaged C++) but happy to hear more general solutions as long as they are workable on Windows XP or alter.

  I have do an extensive calculation on a big vector of integers. The vector size is not changed during the calculation. The size of the vector is frequently accessed by the code. What is faster in general: using the vector::size() function or using helper constant vectorSize storing the size of the vector? I know that compilers usually able to inline the size() function when setting the proper compiler flags, however, making a function inline is something that a compiler may do but can not be forced.
