  • Mac OSX Server 10.6 DNS Issues

    - by dallasclark
The server was upgraded from 10.5 from 10.6, during the upgrade the Reverse Zones were lost so I tried to recreate these but found that it's best to delete all zones, definitions and start again. So I've started again and Reverse Zones are appearing but I'm still having issues. I receive the following errors (if they help) 01-Nov-2010 12:52:01.254 client 192.168.1.52#57051: view com.apple.ServerAdmin.DNS.public: query (cache) 'server.dev.home.gateway/A/IN' denied 01-Nov-2010 12:59:24.487 client 192.168.1.52#52858: view com.apple.ServerAdmin.DNS.public: query (cache) 'earth.server.dev.home.gateway/A/IN' denied At the moment I have the following setup in the DNS 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. • Mac OS X bash prompt bug?

    - by Memo
I am trying to set my bash prompt to display the time and current directory in bold: export PS1="\[\e[1m\][\A] \w \$ \[\e[0m\]" This does apparently work, but when I use the command history (ctrl-r), after finding the command I was searching for and pressing enter, this line is not displayed correctly. Here is an example: [21:58] ~/Wyona/svn-repos/zwischengas $ (reverse-i-search)`ta': tail -F logs/log4j-cnode1.log becomes, after pressing enter: [21:58] ~/Wyona/svn-repos/zwischengas $ -F logs/log4j-cnode1.log Of course, this is not "really" a problem, since the command does work correctly, but it is still annoying. Does anybody know why this happens? And, more importantly, how to prevent/fix it? Thanks, Memo

  • Set up ad hoc wireless connection between Windows Vista and Mac OS X

    - by Skarab
I have the following problem - Windows Vista does not connect to adhoc wireless network created on my Macbook. I have tried to create secured (with 40 bit key) and unsecured network but Windows Vista still has problems to connect. Windows VISTA informs me -- after 5 minutes of attempts - that setting up the connection -- with my adhoc network -- took too much time. My question: do I need to configure some settings on Vista to connect it to my Macbook? Maybe it is a problem with DHCP? Edited: I have tried the other way: http://superuser.com/questions/202890/set-up-an-adhoc-network-in-windows-vista-to-connect-to-and-share-the-internet-con

  • VirtualBox: Host OS processor is spiked while guest OS virtual processor is idle?

    - by Greg Mattes
I'm running Windows XP 32-bit on Windows Vista 64-bit with VirtualBox 3.0.6. Whenever I run the XP VM, Vista (host) reports 100% cpu utilization even though XP (guest) reports between 1-5% cpu utilization. The host box has 2 GB of physical RAM. The guest/vm is configured with 512 MB. The host box has a 64-bit AMD processor. No apps (other than VirtualBox) are running on either host, they're just idling. Any guesses as to why the host processor is spiked? I've enabled various advanced features for the XP guest in the hopes of having better performance: Settings → System → Motherboard: Enable IO APIC Settings → System → Processor: Enable PAE/NX Settings → System → Acceleration: Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Enable Nesting Paging

  • How to Install PCRE Development Headers on Mac OSX

    - by martincarlin87
I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and my local Ruby on Rails development environment isn't running straight off the bat, when I visit localhost I see It works! and remembered I needed to start Phusion Passenger, so when I run passenger start it checks all the requisites and fails when it gets to the PCRE Development Headers: * Checking for PCRE development headers... Found: no It tells me to go to http://www.pcre.org/ to download them so I downloaded 8.33 from here which went to my Downloads folder, so I unzipped it, cd'd to the folder and ran: ./configure make make install Then cd'd back to my rails app directory on my Desktop and re-ran passenger start but it's still the same. Tried a new Terminal window but that didn't make any difference. I must have done this before to get my dev environment working but can't seem to solve it this time. I also tried brew install pcre but it says Warning: pcre-8.33 already installed.

  • Mac "Steam needs to be online to update" - 404 fetching *_osx.zip.*

    - by Chris Boyle
Since yesterday evening, when I launch Steam on OSX, a self-update progress bar appears instead (at 0 of 30MB or so). This bar does not advance, an error dialog appears: Steam needs to be online to update Please confirm your network connection and try again. The app then exits. This happens whether wifi or ethernet or both are connected, and pings to the outside world succeed throughout. If I look at the logs in Console, they are very similar to this example (though that's not mine). Specifically: Success! http://store.steampowered.com/public/client/steam_client_osx?date=718277 [...] Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/breakpad_osx.zip.27f59114a86fcd50533e1d7b128f9300947f9969 Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/steam_osx.zip.11a99384214805f2dd3be5084ba6be61d662f8ac Failed! http://cdn.store.steampowered.com/public/client/miles_osx.zip.d9fb546541f59c1fdd03962a605236b1021abab8 Requesting the first URL successfully returns some data including the filenames of the latter three, and requesting any of those gives me a 404 (I've tried multiple clients on multiple continents). Searches on Google and Twitter show about 10-20 others having this problem in the past 24 hours, but hardly the angry mob I'd expect if the problem affected all Steam OSX users. Things that have already been tried with no effect: Switching between wifi and ethernet. Killing all Steam processes including ipcserver. Moving the ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/registry.vdf file away. Requesting those URLs with other clients and from other locations. Interesting: that first URL with the date parameter returns the same content even without that parameter (thus would lead to the same 404s) suggesting that the problem is not necessarily specific to coming from a particular currently-installed version of Steam.

  • Symlinks are inaccessible by their full path on OS X

    - by Computer Guru
    Hi, I have symlinks pointing to applications placed in /usr/local/bin which is in the path. However, I can't run these applications from other folders. Even more weird, I can't access them by the full path to the symlink. [mqudsi@iqudsi:Desktop/EasyBCD]$ echo $path (03-26 13:42) /opt/local/bin /opt/local/sbin /usr/local/bin /usr/local/sbin/ /usr/local/CrossPack-AVR/bin /usr/bin /bin /usr/sbin /sbin /usr/local/bin /usr/X11/bin [mqudsi@iqudsi:local/bin]$ ls -l /usr/local/bin (03-26 13:47) total 24280 -rwxr-xr-x 1 mqudsi wheel 18464 May 14 2009 ascii-xfr -rwxr-xr-x 1 mqudsi wheel 12567 Mar 25 04:50 brew -rwxr-xr-x 1 mqudsi wheel 17768 Dec 11 12:41 bsdiff -rwxr-xr-x 1 mqudsi wheel 43024 Mar 28 2009 dumpsexp -rwxr-xr-x 1 mqudsi wheel 280 Sep 10 2009 easy_install -rwxr-xr-x 1 mqudsi wheel 288 Sep 10 2009 easy_install-2.6 -rwxr-xr-x 1 mqudsi wheel 39696 Apr 5 2009 fuse_wait lrwxr-xr-x 1 mqudsi wheel 29 Mar 25 04:53 git -> ../Cellar/git/1.7.0.3/bin/git [mqudsi@iqudsi:local/bin]$ /usr/local/bin/git (03-26 13:47) zsh: no such file or directory: /usr/local/bin/git Clearly the link is there, but I'm not able to get it to it :S

  • Can't delete a directory on external drive (OS X)

    - by Martin Tóth
I have a brand new Transcend StoreJet 25M3 (external HDD) mounted to MacBook (Leopard 10.5.8) at /Volumes/Transcend. I copied some data from my old Windows (XP) machine on it, and now, after cleaning some stuff up, I wanted to delete some directories, but this is what happened: $ rmdir My\ Pictures/ rmdir: My Pictures/: Operation not permitted Using Finder just asks for password, but does not delete the directory (sound of "moved to Trash" is played). I thought it's some permission "thing", but: $ ls -l drwxrwxrwx 1 martin staff 32768 5 jan 16:11 My Pictures/ $ sudo rm -rf My\ Pictures rm: My Pictures: Operation not permitted I re-mounted, rebooted (thinking that there's some file lock), but that did not help. What might have happened here? How to delete it?

  • OS X, Chrome, and Spaces annoyance

    - by David Hollman
Here's my problem: I use Google Chrome as my web browser on MacOS X Snow Leopard. I am a keyboard shortcut addict, and I use QuickSilver to create keyboard shortcuts for anything I can. One of the most common things that I do is to open a new web browser window. But I use Spaces frequently to partition my tasks that I am currently working on, and when I open a web browser or web page with a QuickSilver trigger, spaces switches to the last space that I used Chrome on and opens a new tab, which often distracts me for hours because it brings me to a different space and thus a different task. I can fix this by right-clicking on the Google Chrome icon and clicking the "New Window" option, which opens a new window on the current space. I have tried to compose an AppleScript to do something like this, with no success. It has become a serious problem. Back when I used Firefox, I solved the problem by changing a preference item that says "Always open pop-up links in a new window" or something like that, which was kind of a sledge hammer approach, but it worked. I can always go back to Firefox, but I thought I'd ask my question here first. Anyone with any ideas?

  • Installing PHP with iconv on Mac OSX 10.6 gives error: "Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64"

    - by Jason
I am setting up PHP on my local web server with iconv, which should be there by default, but I am getting the following error: Undefined symbols for architecture x86_64: "_iconv", referenced from: __php_iconv_strlen in iconv.o _php_iconv_string in iconv.o __php_iconv_strpos in iconv.o __php_iconv_appendl in iconv.o _zif_iconv_substr in iconv.o _zif_iconv_mime_encode in iconv.o _php_iconv_stream_filter_append_bucket in iconv.o ... (maybe you meant: _zif_iconv_strlen, _zif_iconv_strpos , _zif_iconv_mime_decode , _php_iconv_string , _zif_iconv_set_encoding , _zif_iconv_get_encoding , _zif_iconv_mime_decode_headers , _iconv_functions , _zif_iconv_mime_encode , _zif_iconv_strrpos , _iconv_module_entry , _iconv_globals , _zif_iconv_substr , _php_if_iconv , _zif_ob_iconv_handler ) ld: symbol(s) not found for architecture x86_64 Now, presumably this means that my iconv is not 64 bit. I tried to download libiconv and manually reinstall it with 64 bit, as such: CFLAGS='-arch i386 -arch ppc -arch ppc64 -arch x86_64' CCFLAGS='-arch i386 -arch ppc -arch ppc64 -arch x86_64' CXXFLAGS='-arch i386 -arch ppc -arch ppc64 -arch x86_64' ./configure But I get the following error: configure: error: in `/Users/jason/Downloads/libiconv-1.13.1': configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables See `config.log' for more details. In my config.lob file, it says at the bottom: configure: exit 77 Any suggestions?

  • Finding source of leaking active memory on Mac OS Lion

    - by Tim Kemp
My activity monitor shows 6GB of active RAM usage: Yet my Real Memory column shows nothing like that amount: (There's another screenful below that, all smaller.) Backing that up, the output from this command (which sums up memory usage of every running process): ps -axm -o "rss, comm" | awk 'BEGIN { s=0;}; {s=s+$1;}; END { printf("%.2f GB\n", (s/1024.0/1024));}' Gives 4.09GB, so it looks to me like 2GB has leaked. I see much wider ranges sometimes, perhaps 2 or 3GB from the ps command and as much as 7 or 8GB of Active usage reported by Activity Monitor. I've tried quitting everything and logging my user out and back in again, but the Active usage is still far higher than the RAM reported by ps and by each process to Activity Monitor. This 2GB of active RAM is basically unrecoverable unless I reboot. Is there any way to a) detect what's leaking and b) get it back? Thanks

  • Migrate OS Install to VMWare Virtual Machine

    - by rockinthesixstring
I have Windows Server 2003 installed on my server. I'd really like to be running it via VMWare EXSi as a virtual machine, but I don't what to have to reconfigure the whole deal. Is there a relatively painless way to move it to a virtual machine? It will be staying on the same box with the exact same hardware... nothing changes. Thoughts?

  • Mac OS X 10.6.3 update freezes mouse

  • Symbolic link to text editor (Sublime) on Mac

    - by Michael
I'm following along with this tutorial on how to use Sublime text editor https://tutsplus.com/lesson/services-and-opening-sublime-from-the-terminal/ . It gives instructions to enter the following command to enable opening of Sublime in the terminal. ln -s "/Applications/Sublime Text 2.app/Contents/SharedSupport/bin/subl" /bin/subl After creating that link, it says I should be able to do subl . to open all the files in a folder in Sublime. However, when I do it, it says -bash: subl: command not found My system says the file exists ln: /bin/subl: File exists Any idea what I can do?

  • Apache repeatedly crashing in OS X 10.6.5

    - by ltackett
I want to be using the system default Apache available through Web Sharing, not MAMP. Other questions/answers related to similar problems have not helped. Initially, I had MAMP running, but I stopped it because I thought it might be causing a conflict, that didn't work. I also had an issue with apachectl related to the 10.6.5 update, which I fixed. Apachectl reports no syntax errors and seems to be working fine to start|stop|restart apache. Here are the errors that repeat. 12/29/10 11:53:28 AM Firewall[63] httpd is listening from ::ffff:0.0.0.0:80 proto=6 12/29/10 11:53:29 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (org.apache.httpd[8618]) Exited with exit code: 1 12/29/10 11:53:29 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (org.apache.httpd) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds This is not my area of expertise, so I hope that's enough info to go by.

  • Mac Terminal.app: Force '^C' to be printed when editing current prompt, then aborting it

    - by Stefan Lasiewski
This is the opposite of Prevent “^C” from being printed when aborting editing current prompt. I'm using Bash. When I'm editing the commandline in Bash, and I hit Control-C to abort the commandline, the '^C' character does not display. I would like to see this character. I tried commands like stty -ctlecho and stty ctlecho (which I borrowed from the other question), but this didn't work for me. This behavior seems to be true with my environment on Ubuntu, CentOS and MacOSX. This only happens within Apple's Terminal.App. If I SSH to a remote Linux or FreeBSD box, then ^C is printed. So, this is clearly just a local setting. Update: Here is the output of stty -a, as requested by @quack quixote : $ stty -a speed 9600 baud; 41 rows; 88 columns; lflags: icanon isig iexten echo echoe -echok echoke -echonl echoctl -echoprt -altwerase -noflsh -tostop -flusho pendin -nokerninfo -extproc iflags: -istrip icrnl -inlcr -igncr ixon -ixoff ixany imaxbel iutf8 -ignbrk brkint -inpck -ignpar -parmrk oflags: opost onlcr -oxtabs -onocr -onlret cflags: cread cs8 -parenb -parodd hupcl -clocal -cstopb -crtscts -dsrflow -dtrflow -mdmbuf cchars: discard = ^O; dsusp = ^Y; eof = ^D; eol = <undef>; eol2 = <undef>; erase = ^?; intr = ^C; kill = ^U; lnext = ^V; min = 1; quit = ^\; reprint = ^R; start = ^Q; status = ^T; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; time = 0; werase = ^W; After typing stty sane, stty -a will output the following. • How to boot Linux and Windows - Windows as Default OS

I have a dual boot system that works great. I have Ubuntu and XP 64 on one disk and XP on another disk. I would like to boot to XP by default, but somehow retain the option of choosing.
