  • logrotate isn't rotating a particular log file (and i think it should be)

    - by Max Williams
Hi all. For a particular app, i have log files in two places. One of the places has just one log file that i want to use with logrotate, for the other location i want to use logrotate on all log files in that folder. I've set up an entry called millionaire-staging in /etc/logrotate.d and have been testing it by calling logrotate -f millionaire-staging. Here's my entry: #/etc/logrotate.d/millionaire-staging compress rotate 1000 dateext missingok sharedscripts copytruncate /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/log/staging.log { weekly } /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/*log { size 40M } So, for the first folder, i want to rotate weekly (this seems to have worked fine). For the other, i want to rotate only when the log files get bigger than 40 meg. When i look in that folder (using the same locator as in the logrotate config), i can see a file in there that's 54M and which hasn't been rotated: $ ls -lh /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/*log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 33M 2010-12-29 15:00 /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/test.millionaire.charanga.com.access-log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 54M 2010-09-10 16:57 /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/test.millionaire.charanga.com.debug-log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 53K 2010-12-14 15:48 /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/test.millionaire.charanga.com.error-log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 3.8M 2010-12-29 14:30 /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/test.millionaire.charanga.com.ssl.access-log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 16K 2010-12-17 15:00 /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/test.millionaire.charanga.com.ssl.error-log -rw-r--r-- 1 deploy deploy 0 2010-12-29 14:49 /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/unicorn.stderr.log -rw-r--r-- 1 deploy deploy 0 2010-12-29 14:49 /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log/unicorn.stdout.log Some of the other log files in that folder have been rotated though: $ ls -lh /var/www/apps/test.millionaire/shared/log total 91M -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 33M 2010-12-29 15:05 test.millionaire.charanga.com.access-log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 54M 2010-09-10 16:57 test.millionaire.charanga.com.debug-log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 53K 2010-12-14 15:48 test.millionaire.charanga.com.error-log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 3.8M 2010-12-29 14:30 test.millionaire.charanga.com.ssl.access-log -rw-r--r-- 1 www-data root 16K 2010-12-17 15:00 test.millionaire.charanga.com.ssl.error-log -rw-r--r-- 1 deploy deploy 0 2010-12-29 14:49 unicorn.stderr.log -rw-r--r-- 1 deploy deploy 41K 2010-12-29 11:03 unicorn.stderr.log-20101229.gz -rw-r--r-- 1 deploy deploy 0 2010-12-29 14:49 unicorn.stdout.log -rw-r--r-- 1 deploy deploy 1.1K 2010-10-15 11:05 unicorn.stdout.log-20101229.gz I think what might have happened is that i first ran this config with a pattern matching *.log, and that means it only rotated the two files that ended in .log (as opposed to -log). Then, when i changed the config and ran it again, it won't do any more since it think's its already had its weekly run, or something. Can anyone see what i'm doing wrong? Is it to do with those top folders being owned by root rather than deploy do you think? thanks, max

  • Fast (non-blocking) way to transfer many files to another server

    - by Nyxynyx
I am currently attempting to transfer over 1 million files from one server to another. Using wget, it seems to be extremely slow, probably because it starts a new transfer after the previous one has been completed. Question: Is there a faster non-blocking (asynchronous) way to do the transfer? I do not have enough space on the first server to compress the files into tar.gz and transferring them over. Thanks!

  • Does gunzip work in memory or does it write to disk?

    - by Ryan Detzel
We have our log files gzipped to save space. Normally we keep them compressed and just do gunzip -c file.gz | grep 'test' to find important information but we're wondering if it's quicker to keep the files uncompressed and then do the grep. cat file | grep 'test' There has been some discussions about how gzip works if it would make sense that if it reads it into memory and unzips then the first one would be faster but if it doesn't then the second one would be faster. Does anyone know how gzip uncompresses data?

  • How to avoid compressing compressed files

    - by Gzorg
Most compression programs compress all files by default. But when archiving a folder containing already compressed files, there is no need to compress them a second time, such as archives, packed setup program, jpg, movies, mp3,.... Are there any compression programs that allow an arbitrary list of type of files to be stored while the others are still compressed ? It looks like Winrar can't. I expect this would be doable with tar+gz/bzip2 and some scripting in various ways. Edit : Winrar can

I have been seeing lately some failures to authenticate and wonder if it is related to these errors? I have seen a possible timeout problem in the 2.2 Code base and not sure if theres a patch or if I would have to upgrade to the latest openldap version? thanks kosta

  • Three formats? Why?

    - by Yar
I needed to download the Ruby Source recently from here and it says, "available in three formats" which are .tar.bz2, .tar.gz and .zip. Is there any reason that we need all three formats? At least on Linux and OSX I can do any of the three easily. On Windows, only zip is built-in, I think. Is there anything behind these preferences or is this just a religious battle?

  • Changing Java from OpenJDK to SunJava

    - by SpiXel
I want to change OpenJDK to SunJava in my ubuntu linux desktop , i have downloaded the "jdk-7.tar.gz" from sun's website, but there problem is how to make the system to use the newly downloaded java ? I tried adding the new jdk/bin/java to my PATH ( from .bashrc ) but that seem not to work (cause probably OpenJDK's path is inside my PATH variable as well , so the system checks that first) Here's my JDK7 : /usr/lib/jdk7/bin/java Here's what $(which java) outputs : /usr/bin/java Thanks in advance

  • nginx + apache subdomain redirection fault

    - by webwolf
i really need your advice folks since i'm experiencing some troubles with nginx & apache2 subdomains configs first of all, there's a site (say, site.com) and two subdomains (links.site.com and shop.site.com) whose files are physically located at the same level of FS hierarchy as the site.com itself my hoster has configured both apache and nginx by my request, but it still doesn't work as it used to both of subdomains point to the main page of site.com for some unknown and implicit (for me) reason :( my assumption is that's happen because site.com record is placed first in both configs?!.. please help me solve this out! • Grep-ing gzipped files [duplicate]

    - by Julien Genestoux
This question already has an answer here: Grepping through .gz log files 5 answers I have a set of 100 log files, compressed using gzip. I need to find all lines matching a given expression. I'd use grep, but of course, that's a bit of a nightmare because I'll have to unzip all files, one by one, grep them and delete the unzipped version, because they wouldn't all fit on my sevrer if they were all unzipped. Anyone has a little trick on how to get that done quickly?

I have literally hundreds of messages like that in my logs: SYS: Nov 4 14:40:48 samsung-romano whoopsie[1156]: online SYS: Nov 4 14:41:56 whoopsie[1156]: last message repeated 4 times SYS: Nov 4 14:42:56 whoopsie[1156]: last message repeated 2 times SYS: Nov 4 14:43:56 whoopsie[1156]: last message repeated 2 times SYS: Nov 4 14:44:56 whoopsie[1156]: last message repeated 2 times % zgrep whoopsie /var/log/syslog*gz | wc -l 773 Is there a way to tell whoopsie to be less verbose? (the funny output format is from SLogger, a homemade program to check system log files I wrote ages ago, but this is basically the content of /var/log/syslog file).
