  • Application won't run when installed in "/opt"

    - by Sam Hewitt
I've developed a program for the App Developer Showdown, with quickly, in python, and it works as expected when I package and install it normally -in /usr. However when packaged for installation in /opt it doesn't run -and I'm not getting (or can't find) an error message of any sort, as to what the problem might be. I was wondering if someone here has the answer. The app does require root access -using gksudo- to function. I'm fairly new to programming, but not to Linux. Thanks, Sam Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/aplomb

  • How to Get Vine App for Windows Phone in Canada

    - by D'Arcy Lussier
Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/dlussier/archive/2013/11/12/154613.aspxI wanted to download the Vine app for Windows Phone, but I couldn’t find it in the app store when I browsed it on my Nokia. I went to the app’s page on the app store where I saw this: One of my Twitter peeps from Winnipeg, Len, commented that he was able to install it from the website. So I went back and noticed that there’s a “Download and Install Manually” link towards the bottom of the page, which will let you download the .XAP file directly. So I emailed myself the link, opened it on my phone, and voila – Vine is now installed! What’s the point of limiting apps by region if we can just manually download and install the file anyway? Weird. D

  • Gzip compress offline?

    - by shoosh
I've configured my site to serve compressed content by putting this line in .htaccess AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/javascript text/css application/javascript application/json This works perfectly for almost all files except a few large JSON files that are above 200Kb. For some reason they are not being compressed. I see that they don't using the net tab in firebug and the Network section in chrome. So as a workaround I thought I could compress these files offline and have Apache read them compressed. What tool should I use to compress them? is the linux gzip the one? any special flags or something I should use? What should I put in .htaccess so that the server would know to serve these files with content-encoding gzip ?

  • Moving from C# to Java [closed]

    - by Mike
I worked over 5 years as C# software developer, but last time I often think, should I learn Java platform (especially Java EE)? On job sites I see that there are much more Java jobs than .NET (financial, corporate sector) and Java salaries 20-25% higher than C#. But on the opposite side I see that job count trend for C# is growing last 7 years, but Java job trend is nearly constant. Is this fact a sign that soon situation will change and C# job became more profitable? I will be grateful for any advice or your opinion! Thank you.

  • IP/PORT forward requests to another server

    - by DT.DTDG
I have the following listening PORT:IP set up on my UBuntu server. 12.345.67.890:3636 It receives requests perfectly, however, I would now like to forward any requests to that IP:PORT to another IP:PORT, i.e.: 09.876.54.321:3636 Essentially I want to do a request forward 12.345.67.890:3636 -> 09.876.54.321:3636. How can I go about it in Terminal and if I wanted to change it back how can I go about that too? Is there also a way to test that the data is forwarding and it is setup properly? Thanks! Edit: Can I just do as follows, just wondering how I would go about testing it and how I could disable it? sysctl net.ipv4.ip_forward=1 iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 3636 -j DNAT --to-destination 09.876.54.321:3636 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE

  • Why are cryptic short identifiers still so common in low-level programming?

    - by romkyns
There used to be very good reasons for keeping instruction / register names short. Those reasons no longer apply, but short cryptic names are still very common in low-level programming. Why is this? Is it just because old habits are hard to break, or are there better reasons? For example: Atmel ATMEGA32U2 (2010?): TIFR1 (instead of TimerCounter1InterruptFlag), ICR1H (instead of InputCapture1High), DDRB (instead of DataDirectionPortB), etc. .NET CLR instruction set (2002): bge.s (instead of branch-if-greater.signed), etc. Aren't the longer, non-cryptic names easier to work with?

  • What language has the best/most library bindings?

    - by Rook
A library binding allows a programming language to use a library written in another language. Most commonly you want to access a C library like libcurl from a language like PHP or Python. Not all bindings are created equally, for instance the libcurl binding for Python was abandoned almost 3 years ago and their sf.net bug tracker is overrun with unsolved problems. PHP on the other hand has very good libcurl bindings that are actively maintained. So here is my question: What language has the best and/or the most bindings?

  • Data Warehouse Workshop

    - by Davide Mauri
I’m really really pleased to announce that it’s possible to register to the Data Warehouse Workshop that I and Thomas Kejser developed togheter.  Several months ago we decided to join forces in order to create a workshop that would contain not only the theoretical stuff, but also the experience we both have and all the best practices and lesson learned that can make the difference between a success and a failure when building a Data Warehouse. The first sheduled date is 7 February in Kista (Sweden): http://www.eventzilla.net/web/event?eventid=2138965081 and until 30th November there is the Super Early Bird to save more the 100€ (150$). The workshop will be very similar to the one I delivered at PASS Summit summit, with some extra technical stuff since it’s one hour longer. In addition to that for this first version both me and Thomas will be present, so it’s a great change  to make sure you super-charge your DW/BI project with insights that aren’t available anywhere else! If you’re into the BI field and you live in Europe, don’t miss this opportunity!

  • Integrating Java webapps with Adobe Professional: Resources?

    - by Steve
I'm interested in learning what resources there are for integrating Java and Adobe Professional, in general. If it helps, my projects already use the Spring Framework. My boss is particularly interested in being able to fill out a PDF form from within a Java webapp and have that data go directly to our database. She mentioned that .net had a lot of bridges to Adobe Professional. I would rather new projects be in Java so I am eager to find if there are any easy bridges between Java and Adobe Professional. Thanks in advance for any information. So far a Google search on "Java Adobe Professional" didn't turn up anything, so I thought I would ask here. Thanks.

  • php application deployment to redhat [closed]

    - by Subhash Dike
I am a .net background person with most of the work with Windows environment and IIS etc. I have been given a task to deploy one php application on RedHat Linux box. All I have is the credentials and the server IP of that box. Can someone help about how to get started creating a new website on Apache 2.0 on redhat box and then putting php code over to that. I do not have physical access to that server as well. I know it's very basis question, but I am in dark for these things. Even if you can point me to some documentation that's fine or else at least the analogy with IIS should also help to certain extent.

  • Even More Steroids for JEditorPane

    - by Geertjan
Got some help from Ralph today and now the JEditorPane is as I want it, e.g., code folds are now supported once you click in the JEditorPane, though there are still some side effects, since this is not how anyone anticipated NetBeans editor APIs being used. But, so far, the side effects (e.g., now the hyperlinks work, but they open a new JavaScript file when you click on one of them, instead of jumping within the JEditorPane itself) are not so terrible. Error checking is also done now, which wasn't there before, i.e., red underlines and error annotations in the right margin. And maybe it's my imagination, but the editor feels a lot snappier, e.g., in code completion, than before. I've checked in the changes, they're all in this file: http://java.net/projects/nb-api-samples/sources/api-samples/content/versions/7.3/misc/CMSBackOffice2/CMSBackOffice2-editor/src/main/java/com/mycompany/cmsbackoffice2editor/GeneralTab.java

  • Free LINQPad is a great way to learn LINQ!

    - by CatherineRussell
LINQPad is a great way to learn LINQ: it comes loaded with 500 examples from the book, C# 4.0 in a Nutshell.  There's no better way to experience the coolness of LINQ and functional programming. LINQPad is more than just a LINQ tool: it's an ergonomic C#/VB scratchpad that instantly executes any C#/VB expression, statement block or program with rich output formatting – the ultimate in dynamic development. Put an end to those hundreds of Visual Studio Console projects cluttering your source folder! Best of all, LINQPad standard edition is free and can run without installation (or with a low-impact setup). The executable is 3MB and is self-updating. To get it, go to: http://www.linqpad.net/
