Is there any Security software recommendation for Windows Server 2003 as a Web Application/Website server?
Or any particular settings I should adjust before making a website to be Live.

This is my first attempt at virtualizing SQL server on VMWare and I want to make sure I am doing things correctly.
Should I have SQL server installed on the C: drive / same partition as the OS,
Then add a virtual disk for the Data files, say 300GB, and then another virtual disk for the log files say 100GB?
Or should I add 2 300GB vdisks, for the data files mirror them in the operating system, and then add a non mirrored vdisk of 100GB for LogFiles??
I have built a test environment I want to isolate from my production servers.
As part of this I want to prevent my new server from accessing file/network shares on production. For example prevent it from accessing \\MyProdServer
I updated my host file with
0.0.0.0 MyProdServer
However this doesn’t work I can still access the files. I do not have firewall available nor do I want to edit my production server in anyway.
I have a strange issue, I have a DHCP and DNS server running in a non AD environment, on Windows 2003 server. I setup DHCP to update DNS A and PTR records even if the client doesnt request it, but I only see PTR records updated, the A records are not created at all. The domain is "local" forward zone is called "local" and in the option 15 set to "local" (actual name) the PTR records are created with the right name (example: win64_ent.local), What am I missing here ?
I'm having a hard time configuring Reporting services on one of our servers. I'm not uninitiated in the domain of IIS7 but I cannot get rid of the login prompt when I'm surfing to the Reporting services website.
What I did:
I made a windows and SQL user with the same name:
Then I choose Anonymous authentication in II7 and filled in the credentials of the specific R.S. user http://img32.imageshack.us/i/iis7auth.jpg/
I choose 'Local Service' as the service account in the R.S. configuration mgr http://img88.imageshack.us/i/rsconfigmgr.jpg/
The first problem is that there's always a pop-up when surfing to the website
The second is that when I'm able to log in I get the message that the user doesn't have the appropriate permissions.
The pop-up: http://img693.imageshack.us/i/loginpopup.jpg/
The server is a 2008 Web Server with SQL 2008 R2 Express.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!
I have tried to set core affinity of smss.exe to not run on one critical core on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008r2. It turns out that simply setting the core affinity to anything (even the full mask that smss.exe already has) seems to work but prevents users from rdp'ing into the machine until it is restarted. The users already logged in may continue to use their sessions.
This behaviour does not occur on Windows 8/Windows Server 2012.
Does anyone know why it is happening?
Hello,
how is it possible to move a sql 2005 db to a different sql 2008(!) server without any downtime? The system is 24/7 and has to be moved to a differen server with a different storage.
We tried copy database, but that does not keep the whole db synchronus at the end of the process but only tablewise.
I have issue with one of the user in Terminal Server 2008 R2 who has "Run this program as an administrator" checked and greyed out with Excel 2010.
This causes UAC to popup requesting for administrator credential whenever user want to start excel.
I found in excel 2010 properties Compatibility tab "Run this program as an administrator" is checked and greyed out (Unable to make any change)
This issue only occurs in Excel 2010, all other Office programs does not has this option checked and greyed out.
Currently UAC is set to Default (Second level to top)
Other users in terminal server do not have "Run this program as an administrator" checked and it is NOT greyed out.
The user who has issue is in the same group and has the setting as other users who doesn't has the issue in AD.
Could anyone advise me how could I remove this "Run this program as an administrator" in option in Excel 2010?
Thank you.
On a windows server (2008), can you even telnet into the server? (not remote desktop, but via the command line)
If yes, is there much control really?
How do people automate if you can't telnet? (assuming you can't)
I would like to set up a personal email server. I am currently using Gmail, but I am becoming increasingly concerned at the amount of data that I share with Google. I would like to migrate all of my email to my personal server.
Is there an easy to use, secure, open source alternative to Gmail that can be ran on personal servers? I do not need a web interface to my email as I usually access it via IMAP.
i wonder if there are some GUI management tools for ubuntu to be used to manage all server tasks.
eg. installing server applications, managing them, editing their conf files and so on.
i saw ebox and i thought it was something i need.
every time i try to install sql server 2005 on windows 7 it tells me error during installation

I have an Amazon EC2 machine (Windows Server 2003 R2) where I want to run a script (.bat file) when the Windows Server 2003 R2 machine boots up. This need to run BEFORE any user logs in. Ideally I'd like to extend the same work-around on my Windows Server 2008 R2 instances too - but Windows Server 2003 R2 is critical for me as of now.
Purely as FYI, the .bat file updates the DDNS records so the EC2 machine doesn't need to consume static IPs.
Hi,
I have a dedicated windows 2003 stardad server. I would like to use it as my DNS server as well. I've sucefully installed DNS staff but I haven't found any good step by step so I would setup each of my domain.

I would like to run an IRC server for users of my LAN, and my best option would be to do so on a Windows XP box. Is there a decent Windows/Cygwin IRC server that you have used and would recommend? If so, any configuration pointers would also be greatly appreciated.

I would like to export my emails from my email account on a linux email server to Gmail. So I was wondering how to get its incoming and outgoing hostnames and ports and get to know if it supports POP3 or IMAP? For example, by some commands that I can run on the server's bash shell?
Thanks and regards!
what is a good benchmark for me to run on my old server and my new vmware server? I want to verify that I have not lost any performance between the two
After you switch the Start menu to the classic style on a computer that is running a version of Windows Server 2008 without Hyper-V, the Start menu is not displayed correctly. Specifically, a black area unexpectedly appears on the left side of the Start menu. Additionally, the Windows Server 2008 logo bar is displayed horizontally instead of vertically.
How can I get rad of it ?

I am trying to access a SQL Server database housed on a ISP. Normally one would simply install an express version of SQL server and use the Management Studio therein. Yeah, not me!
Are there any third party tools that will allow me to manage my database? Lightweight ones would be the best but I'm not that picky. :)
