• Best way to play wav files in the browser?

- by Splatzone
I have no choice but to play wav files directly in the browser (serverside encoding to mp3 isn't an option, unfortunately.) What's the best way to do this? I'd really like to take advantage of the HTML 5 audio tag but my target audience includes many, many teens using IE6. As far as I'm aware flash isn't an option, but speedy playback really is critical. Thanks.

• Is there a way to enforce/preserve order of XML elements in an XML Schema?

- by MarcoS
Let's consider the following XML Schema: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <schema targetNamespace="http://www.example.org/library" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:lib="http://www.example.org/library"> <element name="library" type="lib:libraryType"></element> <complexType name="libraryType"> <sequence> <element name="books" type="lib:booksType"></element> </sequence> </complexType> <complexType name="booksType"> <sequence> <element name="book" type="lib:bookType" maxOccurs="unbounded" minOccurs="1"></element> </sequence> </complexType> <complexType name="bookType"> <attribute name="title" type="string"></attribute> </complexType> </schema> and a corresponding XML example: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <lib:library xmlns:lib="http://www.example.org/library" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.example.org/library src/library.xsd "> <lib:books> <lib:book title="t1"/> <lib:book title="t2"/> <lib:book title="t3"/> </lib:books> </lib:library> Is there a way to guarantee that the order of <lib:book .../> elements is preserved? I want to be sure that any parser reading the XML will return books in the specified oder, that is first the book with title="t1", then the book with title="t2", and finally the book with title="t3". As far as I know XML parsers are not required to preserve order. I wonder whether one can enforce this through XML Schema? One quick solution for me would be adding an index attribute to the <lib:book .../> element, and delegate order preservation to the application reading the XML. Comments? Suggestions?

- by Dolfa
After upgrade to PHP 5.3 my application is returning DB2 columns with Timestamp type as "2010-12-15-10.23.22.716000". This is causing problem for PHP DateTime function, as it fails with Failed to parse time string (2010-12-15-10.23.22.716000) at position 25 (0): Unexpected character It seems its having a problem with too much accuracy in DB2 timestamp. Can I somehow force connection to change timestamp format with it is fetching data into?

• How to properly pass address to google geocoding service

- by clinisbut
I'm getting some problems trying Google Geocoding service when using special characters like "º" or letters with accents. Whenever I try something like: "barcelona, nº 10" I get 0 results. But trying: "barcelona n 10" I get results... I suspect is something related with encoding. I tried this: geocoder.geocode({'address': encodeURI( $('#direction').val() )}, function(){} ); But didn't help. Any Idea?

• [PHP] Read and write to a file while keeping lock

- by Znarkus
Hi! I am making a simple page load counter by storing the current count in a file. This is how I want to do this: Lock the file Read the current count Increment it Write new count Unlock file/close it Can this be done? As I understand it, the file can't be written to without losing the lock. The only way I have come up with to tackle this, is to write a character using "r+" mode, and then counting characters.

• vim unicode bufread/bufwrite script

- by anon
Problem: I want my unicode characters to be stored on disk as (rather tan utf8/16 encoding) \u#### However, I want them dispalyed as unicode characters when opened up in vim. I think the easiest way to acheive this is some bufopen/bufwrite script that automatically: on opening, convert \u#### to unicode character on writing, convert unicode characters into \u#### However, I don't know what functions to call to make this happen. Can someone lend a hand? Thanks!

• Validate HTML entities in JavaScript

- by Eduard Luca
I have a small JavaScript validation script that validates inputs based on Regex. I want to allow certain characters that are not exactly common (not sure if they're UTF8). For example I want to allow the following character ’, which looks like a single quote, but isn't. I got the HTML code for this which is ’, but I'm not sure how to put this into the Regex. I've tried just inputting [&#8217]* but it doesn't validate.

• Do most shared hosts handle gzipped files?

- by Matrym
I get them theoretically, but I'm grappling with gzipping files in practice. How should I go about gzip compressing my files, and what needs to be done in order to use them on a shared host? Would the following work? RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP:Accept-Encoding} .*gzip.* RewriteRule ^/(.*)\.js$ /$1.js.gz [L] RewriteRule ^/(.*)\.css$ /$1.css.gz [L] AddEncoding x-gzip text.gz

• How to compress/decompress a long query string in PHP?

- by jodeci
I doubt if this is encryption but I can't find a better phrase. I need to pass a long query string like this: http://test.com/test.php?key=[some_very_loooooooooooooooooooooooong_query_string] The query string contains NO sensitive information so I'm not really concerned about security in this case. It's just...well, too long and ugly. Is there a library function that can let me encode/encrypt/compress the query string into something similar to the result of a md5() (similar as in, always a 32 character string), but decode/decrypt/decompress-able?

• How Do I grep For non-ASCII Characters in UNIX

- by Peter Conrey
I have several very large XML files and I'm trying to find the lines that contain non-ASCII characters. I've tried the following: grep -e "[\x{00FF}-\x{FFFF}]" file.xml But this returns every line in the file, regardless of whether the line contains a character in the range specified. Do I have the syntax wrong or am I doing something else wrong? I've also tried: egrep "[\x{00FF}-\x{FFFF}]" file.xml (with both single and double quotes surrounding the pattern).

• Dynamically Creating Flex Components In ActionScript

- by Joshua
Isn't there some way to re-write the following code, such that I don't need a gigantic switch statement with every conceivable type? Also, if I can replace the switch statement with some way to dynamically create new controls, then I can make the code smaller, more direct, and don't have to anticipate the possibility of custom control types. Before: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="vertical"> <mx:Script> <![CDATA[ import mx.containers.HBox; import mx.controls.Button; import mx.controls.Label; public function CreateControl(event:Event):void { var Type:String=Edit.text; var NewControl:Object; switch (Type) { case 'mx.controls::Label':NewControl=new Label();break; case 'mx.controls::Button':NewControl=new Button();break; case 'mx.containers::HBox':NewControl=new HBox();break; ... every other type, including unforeseeable custom types } this.addChild(NewControl as DisplayObject); } ]]> </mx:Script> <mx:Label text="Control Type"/> <mx:TextInput id="Edit"/> <mx:Button label="Create" click="CreateControl(event);"/> </mx:WindowedApplication> AFTER: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml" layout="vertical"> <mx:Script> <![CDATA[ import mx.containers.HBox; import mx.controls.Button; import mx.controls.Label; public function CreateControl(event:Event):void { var Type:String=Edit.text; var NewControl:Object= *???*(Type); this.addChild(NewControl as DisplayObject); } ]]> </mx:Script> <mx:Label text="Control Type"/> <mx:TextInput id="Edit"/> <mx:Button label="Create" click="CreateControl(event);"/> </mx:WindowedApplication>
