  • REST doesn't work with Sever-Client-Client setup

    - by drozzy
    I am having a problem with my current RESTful api design. What I have is a REST api which is consumed by Django web-server, which renders the HTML templates. REST api > Django webserver > HTML The problem I am encountering is that I have to reconstruct all the URLS like mysite.com/main/cities/<id>/streets/ into equivalent rest api urls on my web-server layer: api.com/cities/<id>/streets/ Thus I have a lot of mapping back and forth, but as far as I know REST says that the client (in this case my web-server) should NOT need to know how to re-construct the urls. Can REST be used for such a setup and how? Or is it only viable for Server-Client architecture. Thanks

  • Is there a way to identify which web framework is used in a site?

    - by ragu.pattabi
    Whenever I come across a cute website, I am always curious to know which web framework was used by its developers? Being a novice in web development, a look at the page source doesn't give any clue. Any way(s) to get this information? If possible, may be with a bit of Ruby magic, I can figure out things like: which is the most/least used framework for my favorite sites, audio/video heavy sites, etc.

  • appending <a href> to keywords in rails

    - by kim
    Basically, there are some keywords that i want to pick out and assign a link to them dynamically. How should i go about in doing this? Let's say i have something like this; <p>ruby, rails, php, python, django and sinatra</p> and i would like to assign links to keywords like ruby and python, so the end results should look like this; <p><a href="http://www.ruby-lang.org">ruby</a>, rails, php, <a href="http://www.python.org">python</a>, django and sinatra</p> Any help or suggestion would be much appreciated!

  • Will apple allow an odds application?

    - by Paul Peelen
    Hi, This is a hypothetical question. If one would develop an iPhone/iPad (Universal) odds application, whould apple allow this to the appstore? This application would not let you bet on odds directly, but would collect odds from different odds sites and show them to the user. The user can launch these sites and make their bets there (not using the application). Any thought on Apple's "feelings" towards that idea? Best regards, Paul Peelen

  • Web-Frameworks for Education Management Systems?

    - by Indebi
    So, I'm working on an idea and I'll go into a brief overview of that but my question is, What are some good web frameworks for this situation? I have some experience in the following languages: C# Python I have considerably more experience in C# than Python, however I am expecting to learn new things. My idea is this, a completely web-based community-oriented Education Management System that focuses on making students and teachers day-to-day lives easier. For students it will provide a centralized place for them to do homework, study for tests, and reinforce concepts learned previously in class. For teachers it will give them a centralized place to handle assignments, attendance, homework, tests, and all other major parts of classroom management. All of that, but in a community-oriented fashion. Everything a teacher does is shared and open to constructive criticism, allowing other teachers to use their assignments/tests and for students or other teachers to comment, rate and criticize their assignments. This encourages an environment of openness that will allow teacher's to focus on teaching and student's to focus on learning. And that community wouldn't be limited to one school or school-district, this system would be completely school-independent. Please note that I have no problem with hearing constructive criticism on this idea, however I would prefer if this post was more focused on my question. I have somewhat explored about the following options: Django ASP.NET Ruby on Rails Silverlight (1) I have Django installed and I played with it for a little bit, I really like how easy setting up databases are and how it handles the database completely for you. I don't really know how to use it very well and I don't quite understand the Model-View-Controller paradigm(?) for it yet but I haven't thought about it much. I also like the fact that it uses Python. (2) I don't really like Visual Studio for developing in ASP.NET, I hate the way the web-designer works and it just feels clunky and old. I like the server-side development part though. I don't like how expensive ASP.NET and overall Visual Studio is, even if I do get it for free for now using DreamSpark (3) I haven't been able to explore much with this, I could not get Rails (or maybe Ruby) properly installed. I first installed it within RadRails and that didn't work so I uninstalled RadRails and then installed the latest version of Ruby off the official Windows Installer and then installed Ruby on Rails through gem and even after all that it still didn't work, so I installed Netbeans and attempted to use it there but it still did not work (4) I like Silverlight in some extents, I've played with this one the most, it's very similar to WPF (which I've used the most) in a lot of ways but I don't like how database connectivity works, at least in comparison to Django. I also dislike how expensive everything with Microsoft is, even if I get it for free for now with DreamSpark. I would like to hear some suggestions from experienced web-developers as to what I should use and why, or at least what some good options are for my scenario Your help would be very appreciated

  • Scraping paginated items from a website using scrapy

    - by Mridang Agarwalla
    I'm using scrapy to scrape items from a site. I'm not being able to implement this scraping pattern. The site I'm trying to scrape is a forum and I scrape the site once a day. Each page has a table containing posts. New posts are added to the top of the table and as more and more posts are posted to the site, the older posts go further into the pages due to pagination. This is a very simple scenario and we will assume that the order of the posts never change. I would like to scrape this site and scrape all the "new" records until the last scraped post from yesterday is encountered. I have configured my spider to paginate endlessly and when it encounters yesterday's last scraped post, it should stop. How can implement this? (My Scrapy installation works with my Django installation using django-dynamic-scraper )

  • What considerations should be made for a web app to be released on a cloud hosted system?

    - by Rhubarb
    I have a web app that is primarily a WordPress app, but it pulls content from a Django app, simply by calling a service that uses Django models. My understanding of cloud computing is a bit vague. If the site needs to scale up with short notice, does the cloud provider (Amazon, Rackspace, whomever) simply spin up new instances (copies) of my initially configured server? How is state managed between all of them? Are there any good primers on this subject? It's hard to find much out there without getting caught up in the marketing.

  • How can I stop and start individual websites in IIS using PowerShell?

    - by Joey Green
    I have multiple sites configured in IIS7 on my Windows7 development machine to run on the same port and usually only run one at a time depending on what I'm working on. I would like to be able to start and stop my development sites from PowerShell instead of having the IIS manager opened. Does anyone have a good resource to point me in the right direction or a script that already accomplishes this? Thanks

  • How to detect if 2 news articles have the same topic? (Python language-comparison)

    - by resopollution
    I'm looking for ideas on recommended approach. I'm trying to scrape some headlines and body text from articles for a few specific sites, similar to what Google does with Google News. The problem is across different sites, they may have articles on the same exact subject, worded slightly differently. Can anyone point to me what I need to know in order to write a comparison algorithm to auto-detect similar articles? Thanks very much in advance. I use Python.

  • python sending incomplete data over socket

I end up only receiving a portion of it. Is there a way that I can fix that so that the whole string is sent?

  • Strange problem publishing a fresh Ruby on Rails 3 application on localhost (Apache, Passenger and VirtualHosts)

    - by user502052
    I recently created a new Ruby on Rails 3 application locally on a Mac OS, named "test". Since I use apache2, in the private/etc/apache2/httpd.conf I set the VirtualHost for the "test" application: <VirtualHost *:443> ServerName test.pjtmain.localhost:443 DocumentRoot "/Users/<my_user_name>/Sites/test/public" RackEnv development <Directory "/Users/<my_user_name>/Sites/test/public"> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> # SSL Configuration SSLEngine on ... </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName test.pjtmain.localhost DocumentRoot "/Users/<my_user_name>/Sites/test/public" RackEnv development <Directory "/Users/<my_user_name>/Sites/test/public"> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> Of course I restart apache2, but trying to access to http://test.pjtmain.localhost/ I have this error message from: FIREFOX Oops! Firefox could not find test.pjtmain.localhost Suggestions: * Search on Google: ... SAFARI Safari can’t find the server. Safari can’t open the page “http://test.pjtmain.localhost/” because Safari can’t find the server “test.pjtmain.localhost”. I have other RoR3 applications setted like that above in the httpd.conf file and all them work. What is the problem (maybe it is not related to apache...)? Notes: 1. Using the 'Network Uility' I did a Ping with the following result: ping: cannot resolve test.pjtmain.localhost: Unknown host and I did a Lookup with the follonwing result: ; <<>> DiG 9.6.0-APPLE-P2 <<>> test.pjtmain.localhost +multiline +nocomments +nocmd +noquestion +nostats +search ;; global options: +cmd <MY_BROADBAND_TELECOMUNICATIONS_COMPANY_NAME>.com. 115 IN SOA dns1.<MY_BROADBAND_TELECOMUNICATIONS_COMPANY_NAME>.com. dnsmaster.<MY_BROADBAND_TELECOMUNICATIONS_COMPANY_NAME>.com. Since I not changed nothing to the new "test" application, I expect to see the default RoR index.html page: 4. It seems that in the 'Console Messages' there is any warning or error

  • Staging server .htaccess for images, css and js

    - by Gavin Hall
    As we build and demo sites on our staging server with individual root folders for each such as /CLIENTNAME, we need to keep all the css, js and internal links for these sites referencing the server root. The following works for one folder each, but not sure how to adapt to work for all folders. Currently AddHandler php5-script .php RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^(images|css|js)\/(.*) /ONEFOLDER/$1/$2 Would like AddHandler php5-script .php RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^(images|css|js)\/(.*) /EVERYFOLDER/$1/$2 Many thanks in advance.

  • Matching First Alphanumeric Character skipping (The |An? )

    - by TheLizardKing
    I have a list of artists, albums and tracks that I want to sort using the first letter of their respective name. The issue arrives when I want to ignore "The ", "A ", "An " and other various non-alphanumeric characters (Talking to you "Weird Al" Yankovic and [dialog]). Django has a nice start '^(An?|The) +' but I want to ignore those and a few others of my choice. I am doing this in Django, using a MySQL db with utf8_bin collation. EDIT Well my fault for not mentioning this but the database I am accessing is pretty much ready only. It's created and maintained by Amarok and I can't alter it without a whole mess of issues. That being said the artist table has The Chemical Brothers listed as The Chemical Brothers so I think I am stuck here. It probably will be slow but that's not so much of a concern for me as it's a personal project.

  • Can I stop Uri from unencoding a url in WebRequest.Create?

    - by Paul
    The code itself isn't complex, it's just not working properly: Uri uri = new Uri("https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/feeds/sites/http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mydomain.co.uk%2F"); WebRequest.Create(uri); I get a "Bad Request" back from the server, and after much MUCH digging, discovered that the uri is being turned in to "https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/feeds/sites/http%3A//www.mydomain.co.uk/" which is not what I asked for, and so it's having a whinge Is there a way to stop this?

  • How can I stop cURL from outputting the contents of the page it loads into the browser?

    - by Rob
    I currently use curl_multi_* to connect to a few sites. Its only sending a few $_GET variables to start a script, but it outputs the html from the sites to the browser. I want to stop this. I already use a short timeout, but sometimes the scripts start fast, and I don't want to set the timeout any lower, in case it causes it not to connect. So how can I stop the output to the browser from cURL?

  • Is there any framework for Windows Forms, DB driven application development/prototyping?

    - by dolzenko
    I'm writing simple database driven application, 80% of functionality is CRUD operations on about 15 tables. Coming from web development background I figured I can cover almost all of these CRUD cases with Rails scaffolding or say Django admins. So I started to look around for Rails/Django-like framework but for Windows Forms applications (ofcourse I understand that "rich client" application development significantly differs from a web development and I'm not expecting anything really similar). I was surprised that except for a variety of ORMs (let's call it Model-layer) it seems like I'm left with little choice when it comes to View-Controller layer. Maybe I'm missing something? PS. I evaluated Visual Studio DataSet Designer, but it seems to work only for the most simple cases, and requires additional code for any slightly nontrivial task. (added) so far I've found: TrueView for .NET (thanks to Vijay Patel) NConstruct

  • program R- in ggplot restrict y to be >0 in LOESS plot

    - by Nate
    Here's my code: qplot(data=sites, x, y, main="Site 349") (p <- qplot(data = sites, x, y, xlab = "", ylab = "")) (p1 <- p + geom_smooth(method = "loess",span=0.5, size = 1.5)) p1 + theme_bw() + opts(title = "Site 349") Some of the LOESS lines and confidence intervals go below zero, but I would like to restrict the graphics to 0 and positive numbers (because negative do not make sense). How can I do this?

  • Combine overlapping urls in C#

    - by Dan Revell
    I've got two Urls. A server and a relative url that I would like to combine. The problem is that part of the url's may well overlap. I've done this using some horrible string manipulation but would like to put this out there and see if there is a nice and clean way of doing it. string siteUrl = "http://seed-dev6/sites/irs"; string formUrl = "/sites/irs/Forms/testform.xsn";

  • Web framework recommendation for python (webservices, auth, cache, ...)

    - by illuminated
    Hi all, Googling for the past week, but cannot finally decide which python web framework would be right for me. The web app I'm about to develop would be almost completely "pure" html with js (jQuery). Server side would have to do the following: authentication session management caching web services (almost all the on page data would be pulled with jQuery through web services) secured web services (through some form of authentication; this is for remote accessing some of the web services though other web apps, desktop/mobile applications) If there is a good tutorial/guide/idea for how to do this in Django I would be most thankfull if someone could share it as I already have experience with it. The thing that made me start thinking about other frameworks is Django's built in ORM. I know I could swap it with SQLAlchemy, but wouldn't go down that road if I'm not sure all the rest of the requirements is supported. Thanks all in advance.

  • Faster alternative to file_get_contents()

    - by Rob
    Currently I'm using file_get_contents() to submit GET data to an array of sites, but upon execution of the page I get this error: Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded All I really want the script to do is start loading the webpage, and then leave. Each webpage may take up to 5 minutes to load fully, and I don't need it to load fully. Here is what I currently have: foreach($sites as $s) //Create one line to read from a wide array { file_get_contents($s['url']); // Send to the shells }
