  • When did you feel comfortable with programming?

    I've been programming for about 6 months, but i still feel like i haven't learned anything. Or maybe i'm overwhelmed by the things i still don't know. Am i doing something wrong here or is this normal? I want to be able to work as a freelancer in a year or two, but i'm not sure if that goal is achievable. So when did you feel comfortable using your programming language of choice and how did you learn it?

    I have an SQL query that has an alias in the SELECT statement SELECT CONCAT(YEAR(r.Date),_utf8'-',_utf8'Q',QUARTER(r.Date)) AS 'QuarterYear' Later, I want to refer to this in my group by statement. I'm a little confused...should I wrap this with backticks, single quote or just leave it unwrapped int he group by GROUP BY `QuarterYear ` or should I do this?: GROUP BY 'QuarterYear' or just this?: GROUP BY QuarterYear

    Rails is setting and returning a remember_token cookie like this: = cookies[:remember_token] = value6c69b17681d2bf316f8eexpiresThu Jun 10 14:55:00 -0400 2010 In other words, when I'm calling the cookie I don't just get the value. Why is this? I am setting the cookie as follows: cookies[:remember_token] = { :value => @user.remember_me, :expires => 1.year.from_now} What's going on here?

    Hi there, I am taking credit card details and I am taking the expiration date in two form field, one for the expiration month and one for the expiration year, I am wanting to store the expiration date as timestamp. Will strtotime("05/2010") create a time stamp or do I need to pass a day as well or is there an alternative? Thanks

Can it be done without joins? I'm working with DB2, but answers in all SQL types would be helpful.

  • Best method to cache objects in PHP?

    Hi, I'm currently developing a large site that handles user registrations. A social networking website for argument's sake. However, I've noticed a lag in page loads and deciphered that it is the creation of objects on pages that's slowing things down. For example, I have a Member object, that when instantiated with an ID passed as a construct parameter, it queries the database for that members' row in the members database table. Not bad, but this is created each time a page is loaded; and called more than once when say, calling an array of that particular members' friends, as a new Member object is created for each friend. So on a single page I can have upwards of seven of the same object, but containing different properties. What I'm wanting to do is to find a way to reduce the database load, and to allow persist objects between page loads. For example, the logged in user's object to be created on login (which I can do) but then stored somewhere for retrieval so I don't have to keep re-creating the object between page loads. What is the best solution for this? I've had a look at Memcache, but with it being a third-party module I can't have the web host install it on this occasion. What are my alternatives, and/or best practices in my case? Thanks in advance.

    I come from a Java background and have been using C# for the last year - So far the API docs I use are at MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms132397.aspx). I tend to use the lightweight C# docs. What annoys me about that is that I don't see one page with details of the class, a list of members, a list of methods and properties like I would with a Java API definition. Is this possible?

Weekdays *mandag = [[Weekdays alloc] initWithName:@"Mandag" daylist:mondayArray]; Weekdays *tirsdag = [[Weekdays alloc] initWithName:@"Tirsdag" daylist:tuesdayArray]; Weekdays *onsdag = [[Weekdays alloc] initWithName:@"Onsdag" daylist:wedensdayArray]; Weekdays *torsdag = [[Weekdays alloc] initWithName:@"Torsdag" daylist:thursdayArray]; Weekdays *fredag = [[Weekdays alloc] initWithName:@"Fredag" daylist:fridayArray]; Weekdays *lordag = [[Weekdays alloc] initWithName:@"Lørdag" daylist:saturdayArray]; Weekdays *sondag = [[Weekdays alloc] initWithName:@"Søndag" daylist:sundayArray]; daylist being a NSMutableArray.     I need to convert a varchar value of 1/9/2011 to a date in mySQL and I want only the month and year. So that I can then use the PERIOD_DIFF function (so I would need the above to be converted to 201101). I've tried various ways using the STR_TO_DATE function: SELECT STR_TO_DATE(CYOApp_oilChangedDate, '%m/%Y') FROM CYO_AppInfo But I get weird results... (for example: 2009-01-00) What am I doing incorrectly?

    Is there a built in equivalent to the .NET framework's DateAdd or AddMonths functions? I'm looking for the easiest, cleanest way to add X month to a Javascript date. I'd rather not handle the rolloing over of the year as done here. or have to write my own function as done here. Is there something built in that is as nice as the .NET Date.AddMonths function? Or something close?
