I know I can enter any character I need using the character-map applet, but that means grabbing the mouse/opening the "run" dialog, switching to another window, selecting the character, copying... you get the idea. Is there a quicker way to enter characters that are not available on the keyboard (and are not available as alt-gr combinations)? In my specific case I'm using a laptop with the Italian keyboard layout, but I suspect a general solution exists.
I'm using an Asus K43E laptop with:
- Intel Core i3 Sandy Bridge 2.1GHz
- 2GB DDR3
- Onboard graphics
On the Ubuntu download page, the 32bit version is marked as "recommended", but the community documentation page suggests otherwise:
Unless you have specific reasons to choose 32-bit, we recommend 64-bit to utilise the full capacity of your hardware.
I use my laptop mostly for Eclipse, apart from regular office applications, then does it make any difference when choosing between 32bit and 64bit?
This will be my first time creating a website from the ground up and I would like to get some insight on how to implement a full screen site as well as some problems that may arise from it.
I really like the design and layout of sites like uCast and spree.
Since I am using ASP.net would this be implemented in the Master page or would this be implemented in the .ASPX file for each specific page on the site?
Someone asked me today if the time zone of a specific instance of SQL Server could be changed to match the country which that instance served. Some database products allow you to set this at an engine level which made me wonder if your data’s time fields “move” with the time zone setting of the database server instance? If something was logged as happening at 9am Paris time it happened then, if I change my database server parameters did that event now happen at 9am New York time? Perhaps...(read more)
I have installed gMTP and tried to follow this tutorial to solve this problem:
http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/upgrade-to-gvfs-with-mtp-support-in.html
But neither worked.
I tried to connect both my phone (Nexus 4) and my dad's phone (Galaxy Note 2), and neither is being detected by Ubuntu. They don't show up on my files and on gMTP.
Is there another fix? or something more specific for Android 4.3 and Ubuntu 14.04
How can I change the language order by command-line (or text editor)? i.e. without using the graphical "gnome-language-selector".
(Or is there a better GUI which allows you to select multiple language entries and move them all to another position directly, without having to do it one by one?)
Alternatively: Where are the user-specific language settings stored? i.e. the /etc/default/locale for users.
I have an external powered USB hub and I'm using gammu to send some SMSs, but every time the daemon connect to one specific modem, it has the port changed. Gammu is able to send just one SMS and after that the port is changed.
I've already tried using:
/dev/ttyUSB3
/dev/serial/by-path/pci-0000:00:0b.0-usb-0:3.4.3:1.0-port0
There is anything to do which will stop the ports to be changed or use any other fixed port?
Thanks.
I am trying to download kcachegrind after a reinstallation of my OS. But I keep getting "dependency" failures. I have tried going through the Ubuntu software manager (which worked perfectly before...) and Synaptic. With synaptic, I got specific package failures and when I searched for the packages I got more package dependencies. After the 5th time of this I gave up because there must be something else going on.
Please help?
I would like to blog more about the problems I encounter on a daily basis. I find that taking 10 minutes or so to write a simple solution to my problems helps me retain that information. I always forget the specific syntax to declaring variables in T-SQL. declare @startdate datetime;
declare @enddate datetime;
set @startdate = '04/01/2010';
set @enddate = '04/30/2010';
select count(id) from triphistory where tripdate between @startdate and @enddate
Let's say I have a website called books.com where I sell books. I've read on Redirecting different domains to your main site that it's not a bad idea to register another domain that does a 301 redirect to my website, like booksforsale.com.
Now, say I want to only target a specific category withing my website, like books.com/sci-fi/ so I register sci-fi-books.com and do a 301 redirect.
Would this improve my search rankings?
Thanks.
I'm going to organize a mini-course for CS students who have completed CS1 (Python) and CS2 (Java). I'd like to show them more principled approach to programming practice and design, something along the lines of McConnel's Code Complete. If I had enough copies of Code Complete, I would assign some readings from that book.
Can you recommend some freely available material (books, blog posts, articles, essays) for such a course?
(I'd prefer to avoid topics specific to OOP and focus on more universal principles.)
Hi all, does anyone know an equally impressive service that shows the amount of times a specific keyword(phrase) has been searched, as well as a branch of other similar words?
The one discussed in this video (Wordtracker.com) seems very good, but has gone commercial unfortunately which is not what Im looking for. I really would prefer free tool...

Any suggestions for similar free online tools are very welcome.
Thanks
Search engine optimization copywriting, more commonly called SEO copywriting, is the technique of writing the text of a webpage in a way that is enjoyable and easy to read for the common internet surfer. The term also refers to targeting and using specific search terms with the goal of ranking the targeted terms higher on the list of search engine websites. The point of obtaining a higher search engine ranking is to make your site more accessible to potential clients.
Often, my colleagues and I run into specific problems, for example what's the best way to deploy this, or would this or that technique be a good one to use, or just "hey, have you seen that new thing". However at the moment this communication goes via mail, or skype, or twitter, and a lot of information becomes hard to find very quickly. Is there a service or methodology to keep this kind of information ordered and traceable?
In this first webcast in a two-part series on Microsoft Project 2010 business intelligence (BI) and portfolio reporting, we cover how to use Microsoft Excel Services, Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, and Dashboard Designer to create organization-specific dashboards....Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.
I'm now using Ubuntu 12.04.
In earlier versions you could associate a filetype with a specific command (e.g. self-compiled binary) by selecting "Open with" in the file's properties and select the command by providing the file path manually if it wasn't already in the list of applications.
Is this possibility gone?
The only way I found now is to create .desktop files and edit the mimetypes via an text editor.
In every aspect of life, it is always a race for the top position. Similarly, everybody yearns for a top slot in search engine result so that maximum visitors get attracted to them through the specific keywords.

I'd like to stream the output of two cameras to a separate process. Right now, it looks like the best way to do that is to grab the rendered camera views from the screen via platform specific screen capture hooks then compress them real time with h.264. Is there a way to grab the input of the cameras within unity and avoid rendering them to the screen?
One solution I'm considering involves using Unity's multiplayer capability to run the game on a separate machine and grab it from that screen buffer, unbeknownst to the player.
After many years, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is still the key to creating long term brand awareness, online visibility and attracting increased traffic to your website, enabling you to appear higher in the organic search rankings for a set of targeted, high value keyword phrases. SEO is a set of activities that will provide your website with higher Relevance and Authority, which the search engines use to determine how high your website should rank when a specific keyword phrase is searched for.

Have you ever wondered how to start learning about a specific SQL Server topic? Or how to advise someone who asks "How do I get started?" Redgate, and SQL Server Central, have launched a new site to answer that question. SQL Server Stairways are a series of tutorials designed to take you from zero knowledge of a particular SQL Server topic, to a level of practical understanding that will allow you to start using that feature in a production environment. Not all the tutorials are finished, but new...(read more)
There is a partial answer on Stack Overflow, but I'm asking something a teeny bit more specific than the answers there.
So... Does the formal semantics (Section 7.2) specify the meaning of such a numeric literal? Does it specify the meaning of numeric operations on the value resulting from interpreting the literal?
If yes, what are the meanings (in English -- denotational semantics is all greek characters to me :))?
I was told that unittest is fast and the tests which touches DB, across network, and touches FileSystem are not unittest.
In one of my testcases, its input are the file names (amount about 300~400) under a specific folder. Although these input are part of file system, the execution time of this test is very fast.
Should I moved this test, which is fast but touches file system, to higher level test?
