I've got some files for a project that's due in a few weeks. The guy sent them in a zipx file. How would I extract the files from a zipx on OS X or Linux?
I've inherited a few sys admin tasks recently and am trying to wrap my head around using screen. The way the previous guy left it, there are four screen sessions running, some of which have two or three windows running within.
It doesn't appear that he was using any particular convention, so I ask you: Is it better to have each process in its own screen session, or better to group similar processes into a single screen? Or something different entirely?
First of all sorry for the general question. I searched a lot but still could not fins how google reader can help me.
Can someone give me scenario under which i can see how google reader can help me.
Many people are using it but i could not understand how it can help me
I can't play ANY video or listen ANY mp3. I got the Windows 7, and I was watching vids on youtube until yesterday, but today, NONE of my players in general works (youtube, WMP, Real Player, etc...)! Also, it doesn't help if I use another browser.... HELP! What happens is, I press 'play' on the video and then the window freezes and I just can press the 'x' to close it. Help, thanks A LOT!
I want to clear all all previous revisions and leave only the current revision.
Is there a way to do this?
I don't find a possible command to do this:
[secret@vps303 ~]# svnadmin --help
general usage: svnadmin SUBCOMMAND REPOS_PATH [ARGS & OPTIONS ...]
Type 'svnadmin help <subcommand>' for help on a specific subcommand.
Type 'svnadmin --version' to see the program version and FS modules.
Available subcommands:

File history is great but it saves your files on the external drive without any encryption and stores them using the exact same folder structure as the originals.
If a bad guy gets his hands on the hard drive it could basically not be easier to get to your important files.
Is there any way to encrypt the file history backup without breaking its functionality and without having to encrypt the original content itself?
Thanks for your input!
I'm trying to add a user (as root) on CentOS 5.5 and I've got this message :
useradd: unable to lock password file
After reading some post linked to this issue I've deleted two files in /etc :
.pwd.lock
passwd-
However it still doesn't work. Finally, I read a thread where the guy said that using the passwd command to update the passwd file and normally fix this issue. I've tried with the root user But I've got this issue :
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
Any idea to add my user ?
Hi guys
I am running subversion 1.4 on Centos 5.2 and my clients are using tortoise to do their check out, commit etc. I think I have permissions problems but I have configured the folder to accessible to everyone with 777 attribute but I seem not to be getting anywhere. Its generating this error on tortoise "svn: Can't open file 'PATH/TO/MY/FILES/entries': Permission denied". Some guy was suggesting some indexing software installed on the client machine like google desktop, any suggestions?
I want to clear all files checked into the repository /svnroot
Is there a way to do this?

my university created an outlook email for me [email protected] i can't see if the email uses pop3 or imap, i have only access to the mailbox, i sign it to it from hotmail.com, i don't want to check my email, i prefer to:
1) use thunderbird to check the email (i'm a linux guy, i don't have outlook software)
2)forward emails from the university email to my gmail
any of these options is fine for me, can i do that?
I'm writing a simple command line math game, and I'm using python's autodoc for my math algorithms to help me remember, for example, what a proth number is while i'm writing the algorithm, but later on I'll want to tell that information to the user as well, so they'll know what the answer was. So, for example I have:
def is_proth():
"""Proth numbers and numbers that fit the formula k×2^n + 1, where k are odd positive
integers, and 2^n > k."""
[snip]
return proths
and then I tried to make a dictionary, like so:
definitions = {"proths" : help(is_proth)}
But it doesn't work. It prints this when I start the program, one for each item in the dictionary, and then it errors out on one of them that returns a set. And anyway, I don't want it displayed to the user until after they've played the game.
Help on function is_proth in module __main__:
is_proth()
Proth numbers and numbers that fit the formula k×2^n + 1, where k are odd positive
integers, and 2^n > k.
(END)
I understand the purpose of autodoc is more for helping programmers who are calling a function than for generating userdoc, but it seems inefficient to have to type out the definition of what a proth number is twice, once in a comment to help me remember what an algorithm does and then once to tell the user the answer to the game they were playing after they've won or lost.

I upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 and I can boot to the unity-greeter and login just fine, but after login I just get a black screen with a cursor. I have tried following
http://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI
http://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver
and the manual install of the downloaded AMD drivers. All have the same affect.
Also I have read
Black screen after login with cursor
I get a black screen after logging in
ubuntu 13.04 black screen after login
Ubuntu 13.10 - Black screen after login session
Ubuntu 13.04 - Black screen with unresponsive cursor
Upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 Problem - Boots into Blank Black Screen
All of which were no further help then the two support articles about ATI drivers
So I switched back to the default drivers and went a little further into debugging, when I do ctrl+alt+F1 and login and try unity --debug > unity_start.log then ctrl+alt+F8 the screen stays black with a cursor and when I switch back ctrl+alt+F1 the contents of the log output are http://pastebin.com/rdQG4Hb0
However when I try
sudo unity --debug > unity_start_root.log then ctrl+alt+F8, unity starts and the output of the log is http://pastebin.com/Yv4RD2j7
The fact that it starts as root tells be it is either a permissions issue of some required file or there is some setting that is specific to my user that is causing the SIGSEGV.
So to narrow this down I activated the guest account and tried to login and got the same black screens with only a mouse cursor, so this tells me that it is not a configuration issue, but a permissions issue, so how do I narrow down which file has the wrong permissions? Also is there anything further that may help debug this issue?
Ok after a few more hours of googling I found that if I add myself to the video group I can login and see the desktop, but there are lots of other permission related issues, so I am thinking something went wonky with PolicyKit during the upgrade, is there a way to reset PolicyKit settings for a user?
I have followed various recommendations from the Ubuntu Documentation to create a bootable Ubuntu USB flash drive using the 12.04.1 Alternate install ISO-file for 64-bit PC. But the integrity test of the USB stick has failed and I do not see why.
These are the steps I have made:
Download of the 12.04.1 Alternate install ISO-file for 64-bit PC (ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-amd64.iso) from http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04.1/, as well as the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files and related PGP signatures
Verification of the data integrity of the ISO-file using the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files, after having verified the hash files using the related PGP signature files (see e.g. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToSHA256SUM and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VerifyIsoHowto)
Creation of a bootable USB stick using Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator program (see http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu)
Boot of my computer using the newly made 12.04.1 Alternate install on USB stick
Selection of the option "Check disc for defects" (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck)
Steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 went without any problem or error messages. However, step 5 ended with an error message entitled "Integrity test failed" and with the following content:
The ./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default file failed the MD5
checksum verification. Your CD-ROM or this file may have been corrupted.
I have experienced the same (might only be similar since I have no exact notes) error message in previous attempts using the 12.04 (i.e. not the maintenance release) Alternate install ISO-file. I have in these cases tried to install anyway and have so far not experienced any problems to my knowledge.
Is failed integrity check described above a serious error?
What is the solution?
Or can it be ignored without further problems?
I do a presentation (and a class) called "SQL Server for the Oracle DBA". It's a non-marketing overview that gives you the basics of working with SQL Server if you're already familiar wtih how Oracle works. This class and these links DO NOT help you with "Why should I use Oracle/SQL Server instead of Oracle/SQL Server" - I'll assume you're already there, and if not, there are LOTS of sites to help you make that decision.
Although these links might contain slight marketing slants (I don't control them) I've tried to get the best links I can. Feel free to comment here to add more/better links.
As such, these aren't links thathelp you work with Oracle - they are links to help you work with SQL Server. Some of them contain more information than you actually need, others don't have near enough. Taken together (and with the class) you're able to get done what you need to do.

I already posted a question before but I didn't really get any advice/help. I'll be a bit more brief/general in hope it'll help.
I have an MSI HD 7850 with the Catalyst 12.4 drivers installed. I've found that I'm having bad 3D performance for some reason but I'm not entirely sure what. I suspect it may just that the graphics card is new and AMD just need to work on their drivers but it would be nice to get advice and narrow the problem down so that I can be sure rather than wait for driver updates that may not even help.
I ran gxlgears to give some general idea of how bad the performance is. At default size it is averaging around 2000 FPS. The command glxinfo confirms the renderer is using AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series with OpenGL version 4.2.
Edits below:
As asked for others:
lspci -v output is here.
fglrxinfo output is here
xvinfo output is here
glxinfo | grep rendering says yes for direct rendering.
These confirmed that everything was configured correctly.
Within Unity and Gnome Classic:
glxgears had an FPS of around 2000 FPS
fgl_glxgears had an FPS of around 544 FPS
Within LDXE:
glxgears had an FPS of around 4600 FPS
fgl_glxgears had an FPS of around 1600 FPS
In the end it was discovered that Compiz was causing a large performance decrease and solution was simply to change window manager for the time being. Thanks to TechZilla for all his help!
Welcome to another of my questions about compiling! :P
So, after days of stress trying to compile my app, first manually, after porting the project to Quickly, I decided to create the project from scratch using this time Quickly. Now I've finished the app, it works great using quickly run and I haven't added any new file, just removed, replaced or modified. But it can't be compiled using quickly package --verbose --extras... why, if there doesn't seems to be errors related with my project?
The fail happens because python-mkdebian doesn't haves enough parameters to work.
The terminal output (in Spanish):

We switched to VS2010 from VS2003 a few months ago, and there are many many improvements. But the speed of Intellisense is not one of them (although it does generate higher quality results, which is great).
I read that Intellisense and the MSDN help system were being improved in VS2012, so I'm curious if its actually faster? The only data I could find were graphs of an early release (VS2011).
For the record, I am using a vanilla install of VS2010 with SP1 on Windows 7 SP1 (x64). No plugins or add-ins running.
What I'm looking for specifically:
Has the speed of intellisense autocomplete improved?
Has the speed of F12 (goto definition) improved?
The answers to these questions will help in determining if VS2012 is worth the money to upgrade at this time as the intellisense slowness would be the only major reason for upgrading.
I'd also be interested in knowing if the help system has improved. I'm currently using MSDN help from VS2008SP1 because it has filtering and is faster.

I'm looking for a billing application (also inventories, shopping, clients, providers, accounts, etc) for small businesses. The software should adapt with Colombia's necessities. I searched for it in Google, and I found several ERP such as OpenBravo and Adempiere, but these applications are very big and difficult to use, in fact, I couldn't make them work.
I found an application called Ubifactura (made specifically for Colombia), I downloaded the Java source code, but I don't have any idea about how to compile it. I need someone to help me to compile it or just some recommendations for similar software.
The idea is to help small business from my town with one of these applications (it doesn't matter if it is for Windows or Linux), the idea is to help.
All help is welcome.

Soon, the U.S. Supreme Court may decide whether to hear a case that could have a lasting impact on computer and video games.
The case before the Court involves a law passed by the state of California attempting to criminalize the sale of certain computer and video games. Two previous courts rejected the California law as unconstitutional, but soon the Supreme Court could have the final say.
Whatever the Court's ruling, we must be prepared to continue defending our rights now and in the future. To do so, we need a large, powerful movement of gamers to speak with one voice and show that we won't sit back while lawmakers try to score political points by scapegoating video games and treating them differently than books, movies, and music.
If the Court decides to hear the case, we're going to need thousands of activists like you who can help defend computer and video games by writing letters to editors, calling into talk radio stations, and educating Americans about our passion for and appreciation of computer and video games.
You can help build this movement right now by inviting all your friends and fellow gamers to join the Video Game Voters Network.
Use our simple tool to send an email to everyone you know asking them to stand up for gaming rights:
http://videogamevoters.org/movement
You can also help spread the word through Facebook and Twitter, or you can simply forward this email to everyone you know and ask them to sign up at videogamevoters.org.
Time after time, courts continue to reject politicians' efforts to restrict the sale of computer and video games. But that doesn't mean the politicians will stop trying anytime soon -- in fact, it means they're likely to ramp up their efforts even more.
To stop them, we must make it clear that gamers will continue to stand up for free speech -- and that the numbers are on our side.
Help make sure we're ready and able to keep fighting for our gaming rights. Spread the word about the Video Game Voters Network right now:
http://videogamevoters.org/movement
Thank you.

Hi,
I have sorted through the previous questions and couldn't find a specific answer to the following (and thank you in advance):
I have fully developed my idea on paper and am looking to move forward with it, create it, and grow it. Since I am non-technical, I am looking to either partner or employ (I would pay for his/her services) for a very talented and well-rounded programmer to help create and develop the project. I am looking for someone that can act as a IT manager/CTO and get the job done while I use my resources to develop and deploy the strategy, deal with the business side of things, raise capital, grow, etc. However, due to my lack of IT knowledge, it is always hard for me to differentiate between a good and bad programmer and therefore only find out if he/she is good or not when it is too late. So my question that I have been asking everyone around me is "How do I assess whether the programmer is good or not if I cannot evaluate them myself?" and "Is there any website that reviews and rates programmers?"
I have asked many to refer me to talented programmers but all are either not local (important for me to work side by side with them), happily employed or working on their own startup. I have also asked these programmers to help me find others but none seem to be able to help.
Any help would be extremely appreciated.
Thank you so much,
HelpJ
I'm developing an application to help school principals in dedicating teachers to classes and courses over the hours of a week (scheduling). The scenario is roughly something like this:
User enters the list of teachers and their free times into the system
User enters the list of courses for this semester
User enters the list of available classes into the system
Well, up to here, there is no big deal. Just simple CRUD operations and nothing extraordinary. However, now what makes this system useful is that the application should automatically and based on an algorithm create the semester scheduling.
I think you've got the main idea here. For example application should suggest that teacher A should go to class 1 for mathematics, and at the same time teacher B should go to class 2 for physics. This way all of the classes would be dedicated to lessons and teacher times won't overlap each other. Piece a cake for school principal.
However, I can't find a good algorithm for this resource dedication. I mean it seems hard to me.
Searching Google resulted in articles from different websites, but they are of no help and use to me. For example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource_allocation or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scheduling_(production_processes)
Is there any algorithm out there, or any application or engine which can help me here? Does this requirements have a known name, like for example time scheduling engine?
Any help would be appreciated.
Users out there,
I came here with the spark of a hope, that you could help me.
I want to get rid of my old WinXP, because the Game-Support for it seems to slowly expire now... So I took a second drive, just an old empty one I had at hands (ATA-Maxtor 90648D3), plugged of the other drive with WinXP, so that it couldn't be harmed, and started the installationof Ubuntu 12.04. Everything went as it was supposed to, until the end. Normal shutdown after successful installation process. But when I tried to boot my new Ubuntu from the HDD, it said:
error: out of disk.
grub rescue>
So, what to do now?
I already tried a lot of things in the terminal, e.g. the update-grub as mentioned on http://opensource-sidh.blogspot.de/2011/06/recover-grub-live-ubuntu-cd-pendrive.html.
Everything worked, he didn't complain about a missing data or anything, but at the end of the day he still wasn't able to boot!
Next step was to change the etc/default/grub-file, so that it could load the ATA-drivers first, so that there is now problem with my drive. But even this didn't seem to have any effect, I'm still stuck with Ubuntu in the Live-CD-Mode...
If there was anybody to help me out there, I would be very glad.
Thanks for any support,
Dave
P.S.: I even tried to fix it with boot-repair, a small tool for Ubuntu, and it created a file with data that could probably help you to help me. You can find it on http://paste.ubuntu.com/1428022/
I am entirely new to programming, other than basic HTML/CSS knowledge. I want to learn programming as quickly and efficiently as possible, and I'm willing to put in the time (at least 70 hours a week). The reason I want to learn is because I have a startup that I've written a business plan for and have prototyped in Photoshop (both front-end and back-end pages). My goals is to have a prototype of the site up within 6 months.
I have a good aptitude for math (A's in all math courses up through DiffEq and Linear Algebra). I assume learning programming from scratch can be a daunting task -- not because it is particularly difficult, but because there are so many areas and so much information. I want to make sure that I learn as efficiently as possible and have individuals (in addition to Google) to solicit advice from and that will help me when I get stuck or have questions. I know with other's help, my learning experience will be both more productive and enjoyable. What is the best way to find people that will help me in this? What are some good 'live' resources in addition to asking questions on Stack Overflow?
Thank you very much for your time and help.
I am not a complete linux noob but I don't know a lot either and would greatly appreciate some help with this.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my laptop. Everything is working great however USB devices such as thumb drives and external hard drives wont show up. I have been looking around a bit and when I run sudo fdisk -l it displays this:
