• How to find similar/related text with Zend Lucene?

- by Arty
Say I need to make searching for related titles just like stackoverflow does before you add your question or digg.com before submitting news. I didn't find a way how to do this with Zend Lucene. There are setSlop method for queries, but as I understand, it doesn't help. Is there any way to do this kind of searches?

• Django's makemessages creates a lot of fuzzy entries

- by jack
Each time I added some strings to a Django string, I run "django-admin.py makemessages -all" to generate .PO files for all locales. The problem is even I only added 5 news strings, the makemessages command will make 50 strings as fuzzy in .PO files which brings a lot of extra work for our locale maintainers. This also makes the entire i18n unusable before they manually revise those fuzzy strings.

• What is your favorite pastime to engage in while your project is buidling?

- by ondesertverge
As my average project grows in size the sum of build times throughout the day (and night) adds up to a substantial amount of time. Some of the things I or others do in this time include: Reading the news Thinking of ways to advance the project Looking at other projects Throwing darts Checking the unanswered list on stackoverflow.com Build times aren't constant making it hard to plan constructive use of them. I would like to hear of a method in use to make beneficial use of those few minutes that can add up to a few hours.

• why cant I more than two values from 3 different tables in one query

- by zurna
This is strange. In the news details page, I want to take a few different values from different tables with one query. However, for some strange reason, I only get two values back. So the outcome is like: <rows> <row id="4"> <FullName>Efe Tuncel</FullName> <CategoryName/>
Runway Report
<ShortDesc/> <Desc></Desc> <Date/> </row> </rows> If I disable fullname, then I get shortdesc but not others. Same things happens with others. NewsID = Request.QueryString("NEWSID") SQL = "SELECT N.NewsID, N.MembersID, N.CategoriesID, N.ImagesID, N.NewsTitle, N.NewsShortDesc, N.NewsDesc, N.NewsActive, N.NewsDateEntered, C.CategoriesID, C.CategoriesName, M.MembersID, M.MembersFullName" SQL = SQL & " FROM News N, Categories C, Members M" SQL = SQL & " WHERE N.NewsID = "& NewsID &" AND N.NewsActive = 1 AND N.MembersID = M.MembersID AND N.CategoriesID = C.CategoriesID" Set objViewNews = objConn.Execute(SQL) With Response .Write "" .Write "<rows>" End With With Response .Write "<row id='"& objViewNews("NewsID") &"'>" .Write "<FullName>"& objViewNews("MembersFullName") &"</FullName>" .Write "<CategoryName>"& objViewNews("CategoriesName") &"</CategoryName>" .Write "
"& objViewNews("NewsTitle") &"
" .Write "<ShortDesc>"& objViewNews("NewsShortDesc") &"</ShortDesc>" .Write "<Desc>"& objViewNews("NewsDesc") &"</Desc>" .Write "<Date>"& objViewNews("NewsDateEntered") &"</Date>" .Write "</row>" End With With Response .Write "</rows>" End With objViewNews.Close Set objViewNews = Nothing

• JUnit Custom Rules

- by Jon
JUnit 4.7 introduced the concept of custom rules: http://www.infoq.com/news/2009/07/junit-4.7-rules There are a number of built in JUnit rules including TemporaryFolder which helps by clearing up folders after a test has been run: @Rule public TemporaryFolder tempFolder = new TemporaryFolder(); There's a full list of built in rules here: http://kentbeck.github.com/junit/javadoc/latest/org/junit/rules/package-summary.html I'm interested in finding out what custom rules are in place where you work or what useful custom rules you currently use?

• pivots using pyExcelerator/xlrd

- by Raj N
How can I go about creating a sheet with a pivot table using python libs like pyExcelerator / xlrd? I need to generate a daily report that has a pivot table to summarize data on other sheets. One option would be to have a blank template that I copy and populate with the data. In this case, is there a way to refresh the pivot from code? Any other suggestions?

• Possible to download entire whois database / list of registered domains?

- by Parand
I wanted to do some analysis on registered domain names. Looks like I can hit whois.internic.net to get information about each domain, but it also looks like there are rate limits that prevent me from doing large numbers of queries. Is there a way to periodically (say daily) grab the entire whois database? I really only care about whether a domain is registered or not, so I don't need the full whois information.

• What happened to programming-books.com?

- by Kurtosis
A couple years ago I found a great site called something like 'programming-books.com' (but not exactly that). It let users submit links to their favorite books for various programming languages, and write a short blurb about why they're so good. You could include their Amazon page and the website would grab a cover picture. I've since lost that bookmark and am trying to find it again, anyone know what site I'm talking about? Is it still around? (cross-posted @ hacker news)

• Very basic question about Hadoop and compressed input files

- by Luis Sisamon
I have started to look into Hadoop. If my understanding is right i could process a very big file and it would get split over different nodes, however if the file is compressed then the file could not be split and wold need to be processed by a single node (effectively destroying the advantage of running a mapreduce ver a cluster of parallel machines). My question is, assuming the above is correct, is it possible to split a large file manually in fixed-size chunks, or daily chunks, compress them and then pass a list of compressed input files to perform a mapreduce?

• How do you determine an acceptable response time for DB requests?

- by qiq
According to this discussion of Google App Engine on Hacker News, A DB (read) request takes over 100ms on the datastore. That's insane and unusable for about 90% of applications. How do you determine what is an acceptable response time for a DB read request? I have been using App Engine without noticing any issues with DB responsiveness. But, on the other hand, I'm not sure I would even know what to look for in that regard :)

• Flatten date range memberships retaining only the highest priority membership (TRANSACT-SQL)

- by shadowranger
Problem statement: A table contains an item_id, a category_id and a date range (begin_date and end_date). No item may be in more than one category on any given date (in general; during daily rebuilding it can be in an invalid state temporarily). By default, all items are added (and re-added if removed) to a category (derived from outside data) automatically on a daily basis, and their membership in that category matches the lifespan of the item (items have their own begin and end date, and usually spend their entire lives in the same category, which is why this matches). For items in category X, it is occasionally desirable to override the default category by adding them to category Y. Membership in category Y could entirely replace membership in category X (that is, the begin and end dates for membership in category Y would match the begin and end dates of the item itself), or it could override it for an arbitrary period of time (at the beginning, middle or end the item's lifespan, possibly overriding for short periods at multiple times). Membership in category Y is not renewed automatically and additions to that category is done by manual data entry. Every day, when category X is rebuilt, we get an overlap, where any item in category Y will now be in category X as well (which is forbidden, as noted previously). Goal: After each repopulation of category X (which is done in a rather complicated and fragile manner, and ideally would be left alone), I'm trying to find an efficient means of writing a stored procedure that: Identifies the overlaps Changes existing entries, adds new ones where necessary (such as in the case where an item starts in category X, switches to category Y, then eventually switches back to category X before ending), or removes entries (when an item is in category Y for its entire life) such that every item remains in category Y (and only Y) where specified, while category X membership is maintained when not overridden by category Y. Does not affect memberships of categories A, B, C, Z, etc., which do not have override categories and are built separately, by completely different rules. Note: It can be assumed that X membership covers the entire lifespan of the item before this procedure is called, so it is unnecessary to query any data outside this table. Bonus credit: If for some reason there are two adjacent or overlapping memberships in for the same item in category Y, stitching them together into a single entry is appreciated, but not necessary. Example: item_id category_id begin_date end_date 1 X 20080101 20090628 1 Y 20090101 20090131 1 Y 20090601 20090628 2 X 20080201 20080731 2 Y 20080201 20080731 Should become: item_id category_id begin_date end_date 1 X 20080101 20081231 1 Y 20090101 20090131 1 X 20090201 20090531 1 Y 20090601 20090628 2 Y 20080201 20080731 If it matters, this needs to work on SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server 2008

• Drupal Ctools Form Wizard in a Block

- by Iamjon
Hi everyone I created a custom module that has a Ctools multi step form. It's basically a copy of http://www.nicklewis.org/using-chaos-tools-form-wizard-build-multistep-forms-drupal-6. The form works. I can see it if I got to the url i made for it. For the life of me I can't get the multistep form to show up in a block. Any clues? /** * Implementation of hook_block() * */ function mycrazymodule_block($op='list', $delta=0, $edit=array()) { switch ($op) { case 'list': $blocks[0]['info'] = t('SFT Getting Started'); $blocks[1]['info'] = t('SFT Contact US');
