  • What lessons have you learned about using a wiki as a development tool?

    - by Vivek Kodira
I'd asked a question a while back about ways to encourage my team to collaborate. The tool we use is a wiki. Since this is the first time we are using the wiki (formally and as a team), we are learning by committing mistakes. One of the lessons has been that a wiki isn't suitable for tracking activities. It is better to use a tool built for-the-job (will elaborate if necessary). Are there other such anti-patterns? What development tasks would you NOT recommend using a wiki for (even though it may seem suitable at first glance)? Edit: Making this a community-wiki since it is probably unlikely that there will be 'one' right answer.

  • How to create a newsletter application?

    - by tftd
I'm required to create a newsletter php application that would send template emails to all subscribed to the system users. We're currently using PostgreSQL so PhpList will not work for us if it's not capable to work with PostgreSQL. What's the appropriate way of handling this task ? Also keep in mind that there will be big amounts of subscribers. Edit: I'm opened to java applications that could do the trick.. Thanks in advance.

  • Good tool to convert sourcecode to PDF?

    - by Toad
I've a daunting task of getting familiair and possibly re-architecting large pieces of old source code. I was hoping there would be a nice tool to convert php (in my case), but let's make it more general: any language to PDF, for offline browsing on a Kindle or Ipad Would be ideal if it would create indexes / hyperlinks automatically. So function calls can be easily browsed into

  • Is there a built-in class to handle encryption in C#?

    - by badpanda
I need to encrypt bytecode to send over a connection to a webservice, preferably using a GUID as a key. I have done a bit of research and found several classes developed for a similar purpose, but haven't been able to turn up much that is built into the Windows libraries. My question is: Is there something built in to C# that performs this task? If there is not, I would very much appreciate any suggestions as to implementation. Thanks!! badPanda

  • I have a 18MB MySQL table backup. How can I restore such a large SQL file?

    - by Henryz
I use a Wordpress plugin called 'Shopp'. It stores product images in the database rather than the filesystem as standard, I didn't think anything of this until now. I have to move server, and so I made a backup, but restoring the backup is proving a horrible task. I need to restore one table called wp_shopp_assets which is 18MB. Any advice is hugely appreciated. Thanks, Henry.

  • Any alternatives to signedCMS.decode on windows?

    - by JL
Unfortunately .net functionality using cryptoAPI does not work reliably enough for the task I have. Is there a direct equivalent way for me to decode a signedCMS on windows, using anything other than signedCMS.decode cryptoAPI functionality or CNG. Thanks

  • How can I invoke linux programs from C#/Mono?

    - by Thiado de Arruda
I've been using MonoDevelop and Make to execute some build taks on a C project under linux, but I decided to abandon Make and switch to NAnt since I am more proficient in writing C# programs than Make/shell scripts, so I decided to write a custom NAnt task in C# to replace my Makefile. So, how can I invoke GCC or other shell commands from C#?

  • Why does casting to double using "String * 1" fail? Will CDbl(String) work on all systems?

    - by Jamie Bull
I have an application which contains the line below to assign a parsed XML value to a variant array. V(2) = latNode.Text * 1 This works fine on my system (Windows 7, Excel 2010) but doesn't work on some other system or systems - and I've not been able to get a response from the user who reported the problem. I've switched out the offending line for: V(2) = CDbl(latNode.Text) This still works on my system, but then I had no problem in the first place. The question is on what systems does the first approach fail and why, and will the second method always work? I'm sure I've used the "Stying * 1" trick elsewhere before and would like to know how concerned I should be about tracking down other occurrences. Thanks.

  • Organization of linking to external libraries in C++

    - by Nicholas Palko
In a cross-platform (Windows, FreeBSD) C++ project I'm working on, I am making use of two external libraries, Protocol Buffers and ZeroMQ. In both projects, I am tracking the latest development branch, so these libraries are recompiled / replaced often. For a development scenario, where is the best place to keep libprotobuf.{a,lib} and zeromq.{so,dll}? Should I have my build script copy them from their respective project directories into my local project's directory (say MyProjectRoot/lib or MyProjectRoot/bin) before I build my project? This seems preferable to tossing things into /usr/local/lib, as I wouldn't want to replace a system-wide stable version with the latest experimental one. Cmake warns me whenever I specify a relative path for linking, so I would suspect copying is a better solution then relative linking? Is this the best approach? Thanks for your help!

  • Optimum php.ini and my.cnf settings for a small Drupal 7 site on a virtual server

    - by the other dude
I looking for advice on how to set up the default configuration of php.ini and my.cnf for a small site (100 pages) with very little traffic (300 visitors per day). All pages have a bit of text, some images, no video, no audio, no flash/silverlight, very little javascript and jquery. For tracking I'm using GA and Piwik. The main site database is around 50MB. The site is hosted on a virtual server with 20GB RAM and 6 vCPUs so there's hopefully a lot of muscle to make it run very fast. I don't know much about tweaking php and mysql settings and would appreciate it if your answers can be as detailed as possible. Thanks

  • Distinguish between screen timeout and power-button-press?

    - by Nick
Hi, my app does something when the screen goes black, but I want it to only carry out that task if the screen was turned off "by itself", through a screen timeout - NOT when the user presses the power-button. Is there any way to distinguish between those two events? ACTION_SCREEN_OFF obviously fires in both cases, and I haven't found any other intents that might match what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help, Nick

  • Traffic consumed by Team Foundation Server 2010

    - by micha12
We are currently selecting a source control and issue tracking software, and are looking towards Team Foundation Server 2010. Some participants of our project often have slow Internet connection (for example during travel), and therefore it is important for us to have a source control system that does not consume too much traffic. I was unable to find information on traffic consumption when using TFS 2010. Does anyone has such info? Does TFS 2010 support traffic compression? Do other source control systems (like SVN, for example) produce less or more traffic than TFS 2010?

  • Essential Dojo

    - by Carl Manaster
I'm starting to use Dojo; this is (essentially) my introduction to AJAX. We have a Java backend (torque / turbine / velocity) and are using the jabsorb JSON-RPC library to bridge Java and Javascript. What do I need to know? What is the big picture of Dojo and JSON, and what are the nasty little details that will catch me up? What did you spend a couple of days tracking down, when you started with Dojo, that you now take for granted? Thanks for any and all tips.

  • How to implement a timer callback that executes in the same execution context

    - by Waldorf
Some programming environments like C++ builder have timer components with a callback function which executes in the same execution contexts as where the timer object is created. I was wondering how to do something similar in plain c++ with threading. Or are there any other ways to have a callback which is periodically called to perform some task and runs in the same execution context as the calling thread?

  • Converting DTOs to View Models

    - by illvm
Does anyone know of a good (read: quick to code) method for converting DTOs to View Models or mapping DTO members to View Model members? Lately I've been finding myself writing many conversion and helper methods but this is a very arduous and tedious task. Moreover, it will often needs to be done twice (DTO - View Model, View Model - DTO). Is there a methodology, technique, or technology which would allow me to do this more quickly and efficiently?

  • Generate table schema inspecting Excel(CSV) and import data

    - by Frank Malina
How would I go around creating a MYSQL table schema inspecting an Excel(or CSV) file. Are there any ready Python libraries for the task? Column headers would be sanitized to column names. Datatype would be estimated based on the contents of the spreadsheet column. When done, data would be loaded to the table. I have an Excel file of ~200 columns that I want to start normalizing.
