  • Python service using Upstart on Ubuntu

    - by Soumya Simanta
I want to create to deploy a heartbeat service (a python script) as a service using Upstart. My understanding is that I've to add a /etc/init/myheartbeatservice.conf with the following contents. # my heartbeat service description "Heartbeat monitor" start on startup stop on shutdown script exec /path/to/my/python/script.py end script My script starts another service process and the monitors the processes and sends heartbeat to an outside server regularly. Are startup and shutdown the correct events ? Also my script create a new thread. I'm assuming I also need to add fork daemon to my conf file? Thanks.

  • Chrome Countdown Extension [migrated]

    - by Mike Saffold
I have modified this countdown script to countdown to 4:20pm everyday. I have attempted to create a Google Chrome app that displays the countdown. The javascript is supposed replace a paragraph tag with id of "note" with the time left. It works when I load the page in chrome, but does not work when I load the extension. Example, if I put: <p id="note">asdf</a> I get just the text, "asdf", but when I open the html file I get the countdown. Here is the manifest.json file: { "name": "My First Extension", "version": "1.0", "manifest_version": 2, "description": "The first extension that I made.", "browser_action": { "default_icon": "icon.png", "default_popup": "popup.html" } } Here is the popup.html code: <html> <head> <title>4:20PM Countdown</title> <!-- Our CSS stylesheet file --> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Open+Sans+Condensed:300" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://treesmoke.com/cd/assets/css/styles.css" /> <link rel="stylesheet" href="http://treesmoke.com/cd/assets/countdown/jquery.countdown.css" /> </head> <body> <p id="note">asdf</p> <!-- JavaScript includes --> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.7.1.min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://treesmoke.com/cd/assets/countdown/jquery.countdown.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://treesmoke.com/cd/assets/js/script.js"></script> </body> </html> Here's the popup.html page, showing that the script works. Thanks guys, it isn't that big of a deal if I can't get it to work. I was just bored and decided to learn a little.

  • Another Update to SQL Server Configuration Scripting Utility

    - by Bill Graziano
I’ve been gradually adding features to my utility that scripts the configuration of a SQL Server.  Since my last post I’ve added the following features: Skip any encrypted object in a database Script alerts, alert notifications and operators Script audits Always script model, master and msdb to capture any user-defined objects in those databases Logins are now scripted so that everything for a login is grouped together. There’s a second section in the logins that handles default databases.  In many cases a login’s default database is a mirror target and can’t be set.  This is now handled gracefully.  It also includes a separate section for all default databases so those can be quickly set in the event of a disaster. Script credentials Script proxy accounts Script database mail My goal is still to get everything outside a database scripted.  This release is enough that I can keep my mirror target servers in sync with their principals.

  • Authlogic OpenID integration

    - by Craig
I'm having difficulty getting OpenId authentication working with Authlogic. It appears that the problem arose with changes to the open_id_authentication plugin. From what I've read so far, one needs to switch from using gems to using plugins. Here's what I done thus far to get Authlogic-OpenID integration working: Removed relevant gems: authlogic authlogic-oid rack-openid ruby-openid * Installed, configured, and started the authlogic sample application (http://github.com/binarylogic/authlogic_example)--works as expected. This required: installing the authlogic (2.1.3) gem ($ sudo gem install authlogic) adding a dependency (config.gem "authlogic") to the environment.rb file. added migration to add open-id support to User model; ran migration; columns added as expected made changes to the UsersController and UserSessionsController to use blocks to save each. made changes to new user-sessions view to support open id (f.text_field :openid_identifier) installed open_id_authentication plugin ($ script/plugin install git://github.com/rails/open_id_authentication.git) installed the authlogic-oid plugin ($ script/plugin install git://github.com/binarylogic/authlogic_openid.git) installed the plugin ($ script/plugin install git://github.com/glebm/ruby-openid.git) restarted mongrel (CTRL-C; $ script/server) Mogrel failed to start, returning the following error: /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require': no such file to load -- rack/openid (MissingSourceFile) from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:156:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:521:in `new_constants_in' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:156:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/plugins/open_id_authentication/lib/open_id_authentication.rb:3 from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require' from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:156:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:521:in `new_constants_in' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:156:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/plugins/open_id_authentication/init.rb:5:in `evaluate_init_rb' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/rails/plugin.rb:146:in `evaluate_init_rb' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/core_ext/kernel/reporting.rb:11:in `silence_warnings' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/rails/plugin.rb:142:in `evaluate_init_rb' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/rails/plugin.rb:48:in `load' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/rails/plugin/loader.rb:38:in `load_plugins' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/rails/plugin/loader.rb:37:in `each' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/rails/plugin/loader.rb:37:in `load_plugins' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/initializer.rb:348:in `load_plugins' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/initializer.rb:163:in `process' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `send' from ./script/../config/../vendor/rails/railties/lib/initializer.rb:113:in `run' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/config/environment.rb:13 from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require' from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:156:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:521:in `new_constants_in' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/activesupport/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:156:in `require' from /Users/craibuc/NetBeansProjects/authlogic_example/vendor/rails/railties/lib/commands/server.rb:84 from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `gem_original_require' from /Library/Ruby/Site/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:31:in `require' from script/server:3 I suspect this is related the rack-openid gem, but as it was dependent upon the ruby-openid gem, it was removed when the ruby-openid gem was removed. Perhaps this can be installed as a plugin. Any assistance with this matter is greatly appreciated--I'm just about to give up on OpenId integration. * ruby-openid (2.1.2) is installed at /System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8. I'm not certain if this is affecting anything. In any case, I'm not sure how to uninstall it or if I should. ** edit ** It appears that there are a number of gems in the /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems directory that may be causing an issue: authlogic-oid (1.0.4) rack-openid (1.0.3) ruby-openid (2.1.7) Questions: - why doesn't the gem list command list these gems? - Why doesn't the gem uninstall command remove these gems?

  • Why does jquery leak memory so badly?

    - by Thomas Lane
This is kind of a follow-up to a question I posted last week: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2429056/simple-jquery-ajax-call-leaks-memory-in-ie I love the jquery syntax and all of its nice features, but I've been having trouble with a page that automatically updates table cells via ajax calls leaking memory. So I created two simple test pages for experimenting. Both pages do an ajax call every .1 seconds. After each successful ajax call, a counter is incremented and the DOM is updated. The script stops after 1000 cycles. One uses jquery for both the ajax call and to update the DOM. The other uses the Yahoo API for the ajax and does a document.getElementById(...).innerHTML to update the DOM. The jquery version leaks memory badly. Running in drip (on XP Home with IE7), it starts at 9MB and finishes at about 48MB, with memory growing linearly the whole time. If I comment out the line that updates the DOM, it still finishes at 32MB, suggesting that even simple DOM updates leak a significant amount of memory. The non-jquery version starts and finishes at about 9MB, regardless of whether it updates the DOM. Does anyone have a good explanation of what is causing jquery to leak so badly? Am I missing something obvious? Is there a circular reference that I'm not aware of? Or does jquery just have some serious memory issues? Here is the source for the leaky (jquery) version: <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.google.com/jsapi"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> google.load('jquery', '1.4.2'); </script> <script type="text/javascript"> var counter = 0; leakTest(); function leakTest() { $.ajax({ url: '/html/delme.x', type: 'GET', success: incrementCounter }); } function incrementCounter(data) { if (counter<1000) { counter++; $('#counter').text(counter); setTimeout(leakTest,100); } else $('#counter').text('finished.'); } </script> </head> <body> <div>Why is memory usage going up?</div> <div id="counter"></div> </body> </html> And here is the non-leaky version: <html> <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://yui.yahooapis.com/2.8.0r4/build/yahoo/yahoo-min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://yui.yahooapis.com/2.8.0r4/build/event/event-min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://yui.yahooapis.com/2.8.0r4/build/connection/connection_core-min.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> var counter = 0; leakTest(); function leakTest() { YAHOO.util.Connect.asyncRequest('GET', '/html/delme.x', {success:incrementCounter}); } function incrementCounter(o) { if (counter<1000) { counter++; document.getElementById('counter').innerHTML = counter; setTimeout(leakTest,100); } else document.getElementById('counter').innerHTML = 'finished.' } </script> </head> <body> <div>Memory usage is stable, right?</div> <div id="counter"></div> </body> </html>

  • How to run VisualSVN Server on port 443 running IIS on same server?

    - by Metro Smurf
Server 2008 R2 SP1 VisualSVN Server 2.1.6 The IIS server has about 10 sites. One of them uses https over port 443 with the following bindings: http x.x.x.39:80 site.com http x.x.x.39:80 www.site.com https x.x.x.39:443 VisualSVN Server Properties server name: svn.SomeSite.com server port: 443 Server Binding: x.x.x.40 No sites on IIS are listening to x.x.x.40. When starting up VisualSVN server, the following errors are thrown: make_sock: could not bind to address x.x.x.40:443 (OS 10013) An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. no listening sockets available, shutting down When I stop Site.com on IIS, then VisualSVN Server starts up without a problem. When I bind VisualSVN server to port 8443 and start Site.com, then VisualSVN Server starts without a problem. My goal is to be able to access the VisualSvn Server with a normal url, i.e., one that does't use a port number in the address: https://svn.site.com vs https://svn.site.com:8443 What needs to be configured to allow VisualSVN Server to run on port 443 with IIS running on the same server? Edit / Answer The answer provided by Ivan did point me in the right direction. For anyone else running into this, here is a bit more information. Even though my IIS had no bindings set to the IP address I am using for VisualSvn, IIS will still take the IP address hostage unless IIS is explicitly told which IP addresses to listen to. There is no GUI in Win Server 2k8 to configure the IP addresses for IIS to listen; by default, IIS listens to all IP addresses assigned to the server. The following will help configure IIS to only listen to the IP addresses you want: open a command prompt enter: netsh enter: http enter: show iplisten -- this will show a table of the IP addresses IIS is listening to. By default, the table will be empty (I guess this means IIS listens to all IP's) For each IP address IIS should listen to, enter: add iplisten ipaddress=x.x.x.x enter: show iplisten -- you should now see all the IP addresses added to the listening table. Exit and then reset IIS. Each of these commands can also be run directly, i.e., netsh http show iplisten If you need to delete an IP address from the listening table: open a command prompt enter: netsh enter: http enter: delete iplisten ipaddress=x.x.x.x Exit and then reset IIS.

  • How to run a Turnkey Linux virtual machine on XenServer?

    - by Jader Dias
Turnkey Linux distributes Linux virtual machines in a Xen compatible format. I have a XenServer instance running and I would like to run a recently downloaded Turnkey Linux virtual machine on it. But I have never used XenServer before. Can you point me a tutorial specific for this case, since the manual doens't seem to cover it very well?

  • Run Microsoft SCCM Remote Control Viewer on Client Machines?

    - by David Mackey
I've install SCCM 2012 on a server and have successfully used the Remote Control option to take control of a system I've setup to be managed by SCCM. Now, I don't want to have to log in to a server every time I want to access this client...is there a way to run the Remote Control Viewer client on my desktop OS so I can take remote control of systems rather than having to remote in from the server? This seems like very basic functionality...but I haven't been able to figure it out thus far.

  • Is there another way to run Apache2 securely for end users without using CGI mode?

    - by Volomike
Is there another way to run Apache2 securely for multiple end users (like hosting hundreds of blogs) without using CGI mode as required by suPHP? It just seems so inefficient to use CGI mode for PHP when if we could set up permissions properly, we could host PHP through mod_php perhaps? I mean, I do want to restrict these users to their home directories for their sites, but don't want any security issues.

  • What permissions do I need to run SQL*Loader?

    - by Jason Baker
What permissions does a database user need to be able to run oracle's sql loader? For instance, since sql loader will disable indexes and triggers, does it need ALTER permissions for those items? This seems like a simple question, but I can't find any documentation on this in the manual.

  • How to run Windows 7 On-Screen Keyboard in Windows XP?

    - by frbry
I'm searching for an OSK application for Windows XP that can be resized. It also must save the new size of the windows so the next time it starts, remember the previous size. The one coming along with Windows 7 is the perfect match. But unfortunately it must run on WinXP. So... Thanks in advance.

  • How can I run the same Linux Installation on my hardware and in a virtual machine?

    - by LithMaster
I've started some development that requires Linux (I'm currently on Ubuntu, but I may switch to Debian), but I still use Windows 7 for my day-to-day computing. I have already tried a dual-boot setup, but I've found that it is too cumbersome to switch between Linux and Windows. I'm wondering if it's possible to setup an installation of Linux (again, Ubuntu or Debian) on a partition of my hard drive that I can also run from Windows in a virtualized environment.
