I have a Windows 7 machine and XP machine on the same router. If someone is using the XP machine, how can I see what they're doing from my Windows 7 machine?
I don't keep up with hardware much, so would appreciate any tips on what would be a good touch-enabled laptop that I could use for both development and testing of Windows 8 ("Metro"/Store) apps.
Is there even such an animal (a touch-centric laptop)? Or will I need to use a laptop for development (in which case I might be able to upgrade my RC version of Windows 8 on my existing laptop to RTM) and purchase a tablet for testing?
Hi,
I have installed Windows server 2008 on the latest version of Sun Virtual box. I have some web sites hosted in the Windows Server virtual machine. How can I access the websites hosted on the virtual machine from the host machine.
thanks in advance.
My friend created some .mov files with his mac. Now I'm trying to play them in my Windows 7 machine with Windows Media Player and I only see sound but not image. There must be an encoding issue. But how do I find out what encoder I need?
Hi there,
I have running a Windows XP SP3 Machine and I can't login after I have locked my Workstation. I changed my password and installed last Updates from Microsoft last Friday.
When Windows comes up, there is no problem to login. But after I locked it, it tells me that my password is wrong.
I pushed the client again into the domain, but doesn't help.
Thanks,
cyntaxx
Any suggestions for a free or cheap app for managing window locations/placement in Windows 7?
I'm constantly remoting in and out of my workstation with a varying number of monitors and would like to setup profiles of windows placement that can be run to readjust my window locations depending on the number of screens I'm using.
When I record a movie in Windows Media Center, it records it again every time it shows up in the Guide listings again - days, weeks, or months later. The movies are not listed as a Series (Recorded TV - Schedules - Series). I found many matches for this problem on Google, and no solutions.
Windows XP SP3 w/all current updates; MCE 2005 w/all current updates.
I'm currently downloading a 4gb torrent file in a VirtualBox guest running Windows XP. The host is Windows 7. Where do I install Net Balancer for more effectiveness?
On a Windows 7, the working set memory usage plus private memory does not add up to the total used memory in Task Manager and Windows 7 Resource Monitor.
How do you find out where the used memory is coming from?
The cached memory can't be part of it because sometimes the total cache is greater than the total in use. The commit memory plus the working set also doesn't add up to the total in use - but even that shouldn't be significant if it did, since commit is virtual.
I have 20 PCs (Windows XP) in remote locations connecting to the same server (Windows Server 2003) using Remote Desktop over a VPN. On just one of the PCs the remote desktop screen flashes (redraws) multiple times after connecting, the others don't. The screen resolution is the same: local is 800x600 32bit; RDP file is set to full screen, 256 color; remote when connected is 800x600 8bit color.
Any suggestions what the problem might be, or what to investigate next?
Is it possible to have more than two active VPN connections on Windows XP?
I have a customer with three VPN client connections on Windows XP Professional. I can connect to any two sites at the same time, but the third connection always fails. Is this a limit within the operating system?
Microsoft offers the standalone Hyper-V server for free. I'm wondering if I can install roles other than the Hyper-V role on this? I know installing other roles alongside Hyper-V is a bad practice, but what I'm trying to ask is if the Hyper-V Server edition of Windows Server allows installation of other roles, like DNS server, File Server etc. Infact I'm not interested in running Hyper-V, just looking for a free windows server to install some roles on.
Thanks
Just successfully installed and ran windows 8 to go on an external usb hdd.
After shutdown and removing the usb hard disk, tried to start my laptop which has a single windows 7 system, but failed to boot and even repair trials didn't succeed.
It seems that win 8 affected the strucure of the laptop hard drive which results in corruption in its main win 7 partition.
How to fix that and avoid future problems of the same type?
thanks.
Let's say I have Windows installed on drive C, however I install all of my programs on the D drive, and I keep my user profile on the D drive as well (things like My Documents). How can I have Windows use those folders instead of the ones on the C drive?
I have two Windows Server 2003 and both have DFS and it does replication between them.
I would like to migrate the primary win2k3 DFS server to win2k8. what is the best way to do that?
I found this article:
Migrate a Domain-based Namespace to Windows Server 2008 Mode
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753875.aspx
But I am interested only on migrating the DFS replication and not the namespace.
Thanks.

I purchased a license and used Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit OS for a while. But recently I bought a 64 bit version to take advantage of the larger RAM the machine had and hence reinstalled the OS and activated a new license for the 64-bit version. Now, I am in a need to install the 32 bit version on another machine.
How do I go about reactivating a license on another machine? (again the license currently is not used) Am I going to have issues with Microsoft not letting me reactivate that license on a different machine?
Thank you.
I get this error when installing any network adapter on my computer:
The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
I have tried many different adapters and many different drivers. Any ideas?

I have a batch file that changes a few registry files, and then restarts explorer.exe so that they take effect. I'm using the command taskkill /f /im explorer.exe and then explorer.exe which of course kills all the explorer.exe processes, including the explorer windows I have open.
Obviously, I am using the option to Launch folder windows in a separate process.
Is there any way I can determine which instance of explorer.exe is the main one, and just kill that?
Why do I get updates (in Windows Update) for Office components that are not installed?
E.g. I have not installed InfoPath or Publisher but Windows Update lists updates for them.
Should I ignore them (will it waste space?) or do I need to install them?

I was trying to put the Windows 8 Consumer Preview onto a thumb drive, when I was asked if I was OK with wiping it (I said yes I as it was blank).
I had to sleep my computer during the wiping, and now I can't do anything with my dive.
When I put it into my computer:
When I click format disk:
In short, the disk never reformats (I get an error message letting me know that Windows was unable to format the drive). Whats going on, and how do I fix it?
When my new Dell laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and 4GB RAM sleeps (not when it hibernates), it will drain the battery overnight.
My old Dell laptop with XP Pro (2 GB RAM) could sleep for days without running out of battery.
Is it normal that Windows 7 sleep is this power-hungry or should I troubleshoot my new machine?
Edit: I know how to set the different sleep/hibernate settings. That is not what I'm asking.
